An Oracle of Lies and Fire

Summary:

A young woman finds herself transported to the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, during the reign of Jaehaerys I. Having magically appeared in front of the royal family and due to her looks she is believed to be a time traveler. She decides to play along to try and survive as well as maybe prevent some of the (many) tragedies to come. Good thing that her friends had forced her to study the crazy dynasty.

Can she help stir Westeros on a different direction or are her efforts for naught?
And could someone stop the Good Queen from trying to arrange a marriage for her?

(What would happen if Clarice was isekaid sooner in the timeline during the reign of Jaehaerys I, before the first succession crisis?)

Chapter Text

To say Clara was scared and confused would be an understatement, she was terrified and bewildered by her circumstances. She had been on the bus back home from university, exhausted; she had closed her eyes to rest only to wake up lying in what felt like grass and with a horrible headache. She refused to open her eyes as the sound of voices made the pain worse.

Clara was unsure how much time she spent curled up and suffering but after what felt like an eternity (and after the majority of the voices had gone away), the pain started to recede and she was capable of slowly opening her eyes. She was indeed laying on grass and there appeared to be trees and flowers planted all around her, at least as far as she could see while still on the ground.

Then she heard soft footfalls and a pair of boots appeared in front of her. Clara blinked and looked up, staring in surprise at what was in front of her. A man in medieval armor with a white cape stood over her and silently offered her a hand.

Dazed and somewhat in shock she took it and suddenly found herself on her feet in the middle of what she could now see was a giant garden. There were more men in medieval armor and they were standing in front of a group of people that were dressed in what Clara could only describe as fantasy attire.

“Wha…?Where am I? How did I end up here?”

The medieval knight beside her seemed to flinch slightly at her voice.

“That is what we would like to know as well, young lady.”

Clara turned towards who had spoken and was pretty sure she was hallucinating. He was middle aged, his voice strong and commanding, what shocked her was his coloring. His hair was a silver she had only seen achieved through hair coloring and his eyes were a deep amethyst. Clara should have thought that he was simply cosplaying, that she had been abducted by some weird Game of Thrones cult or something, but something told her this was real. She could feel it on her bones. Her surroundings were too different, their actions too natural, to be a set or an act.

What the hell(s?)?! She had gotten isekaid?

At that realization Clara felt her knees go weak and the world became blurry around the edges. The only reason she didn’t plummet to the ground right then and there was that the (kingsguard) knight beside her had caught her.

Clara took a deep breath, held it and exhaled, following the breathing exercises she had learned from her friend. Fuck. She was in ASoIF and since there was red walls surrounding the garden and a clearly Targaryen man staring her down, she was definitely before Robert’s Rebellion, but when was she? The Targaryens had ruled for three hundred years and there were a few kings this could be.

How was she sure this middle aged man was the king? Well, because he had a crown on his head as well as the deference of everyone present.

Clara finally felt stable enough to stand on her own again, she gently pushed the knight away and straightened her spine. She grabbed the edges of her maxi-skirt (thankful for her fashion choices today) and did a clumsy curtsy (sue her she had only done it as a joke before). She could feel the gazes of several people on her as she waited to be addressed.

Wait! It had just occurred to her that she had appeared on the Red Keep’s gardens, and was being observed by several members of the royal family, meaning someone had witnessed her (most likely) supernatural entrance. Shit. Clara could only hope they wouldn’t burn her as a witch or throw her to the sea or anything else that ended in a painful death.

Finally, after a few moments of tense silence the king spoke. “Rise”.

Clara left out a sigh of relief.

“Tell me, young lady. Who are you, that you appear before us in a ray of light so bright it blinded all of those present?” The king said, voice hard and emotionless.

She took a deep breath and held her hands in front of her to keep from fidgeting. “My name is Clarice Massey, your majesty”. There was a bit of a commotion to the side of the king where the other Targaryens were. There was a woman around the king’s age with golden blonde hair, two men with the classical Valyrian look and another woman with black hair. All of them were surrounded by knigsguard knights. Clara returned her gaze to the king. “And I do not know how or why the Gods have brought me here”.
