Chapter Text
It was a century later, he could say, a great century, a magnificent century. The only difference was that this century was a bit more awful, more requiring his mournings, more mistakes he was making.
A century, he had never felt this old. He had never been this old and looked this young. As if someone inside of him was firing blows to tear his insides, he was burning inside, his insides were feeling like throwing themselves out.
It was not the momentary shape of the anxiety. It was like relieving her death over and over again, every waking moment. His reign was really over since the day he found her laying dead in the middle of his kitchen, doing god's work and taking her life on her own, he would curse the god if he was a believer. He was no believer. He only blamed himself in the name of a stupid god complex and never-ending guilt.
Every dream he had of hers had the same ending in different ways. She was always dying; and she found her death from his hands again. In one universe or another, the stars were witnessing his screams and her blood whenever he closed his eyes to seek comfort in sleep.
Every slow song was sounding like her. Every faded rose was smelling like her; like death. It was a hard process to understand that she was not coming back from whatever place she was. A hundred summers, without her a hundred summers he spent and ninety nine summers he had never left his tears to fall; he cried when she died in a warm, spring day, never drying his tears till the next winter.
He never laughed, not even in a sarcastic way, never. He just forbade himself to laugh again or even smile if it was not about her. Was it healthy? Nothing about him was healthy or going near to healthy. He was doing worse than worst, and he was not able to get over it.
"Someone on the door, sir, demands to see you." Klaus frowned but nodded, causing the butler to invite his unknown guest inside. An angry blonde entered the room with all of her rage, throwing the tablet she was holding to his brother. "Explain yourself! You told me you had your anger and hunger under control!" Klaus frowned and looked at Rebekah, not understanding what she was talking about. He looked at the tablet, showing one specific news from the app. "This is not my doing," He said as his eyes were still looking between the lines. Blonde vampire scoffed and looked at her brother with disbelief. "Who then? One of your minions? If we want to stay in this city, you have to calm yourself -"
"I told you that it is not me! I did not kill all of these people! Nor did my hybrids! Do not you dare to accuse me of losing myself, not today! I don't even know where you find this audacity to walk into my room today or any of you!" Rebekah gulped and looked down with sadness and shame, still not hiding her true colours. "Elena died, Niklaus, she died and she is not coming back. It has been a century, maybe more, I am tired of counting"
"Leave" Rebekah went to say something, but she did not. She chose not to. She just left the room and slammed the door, showing her brother that she was mad at him. Klaus just closed his eyes, the hundredth year of her dead. Sure, he wanted to mourn her one more time that day. "It's been so long,"
Klaus closed his eyes. It had been too long without her presence around him. Hundred years, he did not want to believe again, believe in anything, or himself looked odd and useless. "I miss you." He did miss her more than ever, more than anyone could tell. He opened his eyes, staring at the white oak stake remaining on his wall, framed up and bloodied. The one he used to kill his brother, the one still carried Elijah's blood on it. "If it meant seeing you, I would kill myself right now,"
Klaus shook his head and closed his eyes again, wanting to see her. "I love you, I can't stand not being able to feel you around." He looked around, then stood up and grabbed the frame, displaying white oak stake. "I have been trying to redeem myself for so long, if only maybe we had shared the same fate,"
He took the white oak stake and walked out outside of the compound. He sped to the woods where he liked much. He would fancy dying there. He closed his eyes and got on his knees. He raised the stake and sighed. He was going to see Elena, and that was the only thing encouraging him to do whatever he was about to do.
His stake was about to meet his heart when a hand gripped the stake and stopped him to stab himself. Klaus opened his eyes with fury, but his anger died as he saw her face, looking into his eyes with horror. "What the hell were you thinking!"
Klaus gulped and looked at the girl in front of him with shock. "Elena -"
"Were you going to kill yourself? I did not orchestrate my own death for you to follow me down there!" Klaus let out a choked sob and looked at the brunette. "Bloody hell,"
Elena let out a chuckle mixed with a sob and crouched down to his level. "How, you? You are a vampire, how?"
"Katerina saved me that day." Klaus frowned and looked at the vampire doppelgänger. "But Katerina-"
"She was alive. She had been alive for all these time" They both sat down with their back pressed to a large tree behind them. "Elijah introduced us to each other before you found me,"
Klaus looked down in shame, not knowing what to say. Elena took a look at the stake. "This is the stake, right? The one you used for killing Elijah, " Klaus nodded without adding anything more. Elena nodded as well, not saying anything.
She took the lighter in her pocket and set the oak stake to the fire. Klaus looked at her with surprise in his teary eyes. "Why?"
"I hurt you enough to make you want to die. That was enough revenge for me,"
