Chapter Text
“I’m glad you all came.”
“We live here, dude.”
“Because I have an important matter to discuss with you,” Steven Quartz Universe proclaimed with all the seriousness the situation demanded, not even acknowledging Amethyst’ interruption.
Steven had set up five chairs in the living room of their home. He stood in front of whiteboard which was facing away from Greg and the Crystal Gems.
Rose had the sudden urge to burst into tears. Her baby was so big. She loved him so much. And she wanted to pinch his little cheeks.
“Mom, no pinching cheeks,” Steven admonished sternly, giving her a disapproving look.
Rose put her hands down, blushing in embarrassment for having spoken her thoughts aloud. “Sorry, sweetie, but you really are a cutie pie.” She turned to Garnet. “You were right. We should have given him that as a middle name.”
Garnet nodded in agreement. “It would have been very suitable.”
Pearl cleared her throat meaningfully. “I believe Steven has something very important he wanted to discuss with us.”
“Thank you, Mum,” the teenager continued, rolling out a whiteboard. It was turned the other way so the gems and his father couldn’t see what was written on it. “Now, as I’m sure you all remember, my planning of Ruby and Sapphire’s vow renewal went off without a hitch.”
“Oh, it was wonderful,” Garnet opined, her hands clasped together as she replayed the memory.
When Steven had learnt that he had been in charge of planning the union of Garnet in the other timeline, he had been slightly disappointed he couldn’t do the same this time. He waved off all suggestions that he plan it again as he claimed it wouldn’t count as they were already married. (He rejected Amethyst’s suggestion that Garnet split up and then reunite).
“Especially since there were no diamonds crashing it this time,” Amethyst agreed with a snort. In fact, Yellow and Blue had been on their best behavior and had a wonderful time. Even dancing the tango to the awe of everyone.
“I still think we outdanced them,” Pearl stage-whispered to Rose.
“Of course, we did.” Her lover nodded empathetically. While it had been a good try, no one could out waltz them.
This time around they had invented the waltz. It had been an accident. They hadn’t realized that couple dances weren’t the norm yet until she and Pearl were visiting some human court and were showing off. It caused a bit of a culture revolution that ended with the monarchy being overthrown and Rainbow Quartz being hailed as a goddess. (Amethyst liked to snark it was only the third culture revolution Rose and Pearl had caused).
“Moms.” Steven was giving them a stay focused look.
“Guys, come on. Schtuball was working on this all night,” Greg told them. As the only other resident of the house attached to the temple, he and Steven had a joint bedroom that was only separated by a curtain.
“Okay, I’m just going to cut to the chase,” Steven decided, flipping the whiteboard over. Letting it spin for a few minutes before stopping it and revealing PearlRoseGreg wedding commitment ceremony was written in on it with glitter pens.
“Pearl Rose Greg wedding commitment ceremony,” Pearl read out loud, titling her head in confusion.
Steven chuckled nervously. “Well, I couldn’t exactly come up with the word. And then I talked to Connie…” he trailed off when his moms and dad exchanged excited glances. “It’s been a year. Are you guys ever going to stop doing that whenever I mention Connie?”
“We just like her a lot,” Greg told him with a grin. As they had gotten confirmation that only the humans in Beach City remembered the gems (or had dreams of them) and Steven’s new gem meant he didn’t have any memories, they had all agreed that they wouldn’t mention her to Steven so their relationship could grow naturally.
“Look we know that in the other timeline, Connie was a part of all my adventures,” Steven began to say.
“Way to go, Pearl,” Amethyst complained.
The pale gem’s expression was affronted. “I said nothing.” And it had been a close thing. When Steven had brought her favorite student home that fateful date, it had taken her all of her willpower not to burst into tears and hug her.
Steven sighed, half in affectionate exasperation, and half in annoyance. “No. You guys were just really obvious about it. I mean Dad, asking her if she ever dreamt of pink swords and giant women?”
“I was just checking,” Greg said with a shrug. “I mean I know Cousin Andy wasn’t here when Pearl…” He quickly amended his sentence when Pearl glared at him. “When the you know what happened. And he had a dream where this blue lady let him fly on her back. It wasn’t until later did I find out Lapis and Peridot visited him when he was a kid.”
“And Garnet, telling her that she was family already after just meeting her,” Steven continued with a disapproving glance.
“I thought she ought know.” Garnet had the decency to avert her gaze in embarrassment.
“Uh, getting back to the wedding commitment ceremony,” Rose said, waving her hand in the air. “Steven, what brought this on?”
“Well, I was thinking about you, Mum, and Dad,” Steven divulged, rubbing the back of his neck. “How much you guys went through. How much you grew. And I thought it would be great if you three had a ceremony celebrating your partnership.”
He gave them a sheepish smile. “So if you guys agree, I would love to plan your ceremony.”
Pearl and Greg exchanged a meaningful look and then a nod. They got up and kneeled in front of Rose. “Well then we should do this properly.”
Rose grabbed her face, her eyes turning into stars, and she began to squeal. “YES!”
“Rose, we didn’t say anything yet,” Greg tried to protest as Rose scooped them both up in her arms, twirling them around and shouting yes off the top of her lungs.
“This is so corny,” Amethyst muttered.
“I know. I love it too,” Garnet agreed. She then turned to their son. “All right, Steven. What do we do first?”
Steven used his pointer to indicate his long list of to dos. “First, we invite everyone personally.”
“You just want an excuse to do a road trip.”
“I do. Yes,” Steven agreed with the same serious expression on his face. "And Connie wants her to chance to go to space."
