Chapter Text
Amelia sat at her desk finishing the report from their last deployment.
It had been a very standard trip without any action or big theatrics for her. Amelia had been posted in command, overlooking the operation and guiding the operators in the field.
A job which Amelia didn’t mind at all.
She looked up as the hallway filled with the shuffling of feet and loud voices, she knew who were about to enter her space before they arrived.
Bravo Team.
“You good there Shaw?” Sonny Quinn asked as he passed her.
He was referring to the little snafu that had happened one of the evenings, they’d all been eating dinner when Cole had intervened a little too fast when Sonny started teasing her.
The situation still replayed in her head.
-
It had been dinner time at the small barracks they called home for that deployment. Amelia had been on the couch, reading through the day’s reports.
“Yo, Shaw, you always this much fun on deployment?” Sonny called, dropping into a chair and gesturing toward the file in her hand.
When she didn’t answer, he kept going.
“You do know there’s something called downtime, right? You’re wasting it.”
Amelia looked up slowly. She already knew where this was going, Sonny had made a habit of it.
“Look, Quinn,” she said, pushing herself to her feet and walking over.
“These reports-” she dropped them onto the table in front of him “-are the reason you and the rest of these fine gentlemen make it back in one piece.”
Sonny leaned back, grinning. “Yeah? Pretty sure I’ve survived worse without that much paperwork.”
A few of the others chuckled.
Amelia didn’t.
“Lay off her Sonny”
Cole hadn’t even looked up from his plate when he said it.
The table went just a little quieter
Sonny frowned “It’s just some harmless banter, man”
Cole shrugged slightly, still not looking at him.
“Getting old, though”
Then Cole finally glanced up.
Not at Sonny - but at her.
Amelia held his gaze for a second too long before looking away.
The heat rising on Amelia’s face was instant.
A few of the others had definitely noticed.
She needed to get out, now.
-
“Just peachy Sonny” Amelia quipped, giving him a over dramatized smile.
Sonny entered the briefing room without another word, followed by the rest of his teammates.
Last man in was Cole.
He paused just inside the doorway, scanning the room briefly before stepping in.
For a split second his eyes landed on her.
Then he looked away.
Her phone buzzed against the desk.
‘You look good today’
Amelia fought the urge to smile
She had to force her attention back to the screen in front of her…
The briefing was a quick one, and soon Amelia was no longer alone in the room.
Sonny came up to her desk, pulled out a chair and sat down.
“You know, there was a time when you knew how to let loose and have fun”
Amelia didn’t look up from the stack of papers.
“I’m still fun”
Sonny snorted “Yeah? Could’ve fooled me”
“I don’t have anything to prove to you, Quinn” Amelia snapped back.
“Is that so?”
“You used to be a part of the team and I could mess with you without getting my head bitten off” sonny explained.
Amelia finally looked up at the man.
“You’ve been weird lately.”
Amelia tensed up, did Sonny suspect something?
“Thinkin’ I should be concerned”
“You’re imagining things” she simply stated, trying to keep her composure.
“Am not.” Sonny shrugged “You used to actually laugh at my jokes too.”
“That’s because they were funny the first 10 times you told them”
“See now that’s just mean”
Amelia almost smiled.
“Seriously, Shaw you’ve changed”
His words landed harder than they should’ve.
Because he was right.
Amelia had changed, her situation needed her to be more guarded with the team.
Before Sonny could press any further, Amelia stood up as Cole exiting Blackburns office.
“Cole”
Amelia froze. The name slipped out before she could stop it.
“Donovan, I need you to sign these”
Sonny’s eyes flickered between them briefly.
Without a word Cole signed before leaving, Sonny trailing behind him.
Amelia returned to her desk, scanning the room to see who else had witnessed her slip up.
Clay, Jason and Ray sat at another table. She hoped that they’d been preoccupied with whatever they had going on.
Later that evening Amelia’s phone pinged.
It was a message: - Dinner, My place?
Amelia typed a quick reply
-Sure, I’ll bring the food.
Carrying the takeout Amelia walked towards the small house, the lights were on and the sound of faint music told her he was home.
She let herself in and discarded her keys on the small hall table before moving to the kitchen.
Amelia heard the shower upstairs running. She thought about joining him, after this day she could use a hot steamy shower.
Still she stayed in the kitchen and prepared the food.
Amelia leaned up against the counter and let out the breath she’d been holding.
“Quinn still alive?” Cole asked as he entered the room.
“I am not risking prison for him, so yeah”
Cole smiled softly at her
“You’ll snap one day if he keeps on like this” Cole’s hands rested on her hips.
“That is a very real possibility”
“Let’s eat” Cole said shifting the conversation.
Cole lay sprawled on the couch watching the evening news, empty food containers discarded on the coffee table.
Amelia came back into the room carrying a big stack of folders. She set them down on the desk.
Cole looked up at her and frowned slightly “You’re off duty.”
“I know, but I have a few reports to do this week.”
Cole stepped up behind her before she could sit down, his arms sliding around her waist, pulling her back against him.
His body was warm and his familiar cologne surrounded her, Amelia let out a quiet breath.
Amelia felt his hot breath on her skin as his lips brushed lightly against her neck.
“Cole-“
“Mm?”
“I have work to do.” Amelia tried reasoning but Cole continued.
“You work too much.” he murmured.
Amelia tilted her head back against his shoulder, letting out a small moan as his lips brushed against the sensitive spot just below her ear.
“You’re distracting me.”
“That’s kind of the point.” Cole said softly against her neck.
“You’re impossible.” Amelia said turning around, wrapping her arms around his shoulders.
“But you love it.” Cole teased.
Amelia couldn’t help the smile creeping onto her face.
They stood there just looking into each other’s eyes for a moment.
“Screw it.” Amelia said before crashing her lips to his.
Cole responded instantly, one hand sliding down her back as he deepened the kiss.
They staggered back into the desk, folders flying everywhere.
A phone started ringing somewhere in the house.
“Cole , your phone.” Amelia said pulling away.
“Ignore it” Cole said before kissing her neck once more.
“You should get that. Could be important”
Cole let out an annoyed breath “Better be”
Before letting her go he kissed her quickly on the lips.
The phone call lasted longer than Amelia had expected.
When Cole finally returned Amelia looked up at him with a worried expression.
“It was Blackburn” Cole said before she could ask him anything.
Amelia froze, nothing good could come from a late call like this.
Cole noticed her worried expression “I’m not deploying”
“Not what I was worried about.”
“The transfer went through.” Cole said smiling.
Amelia rose to her feet “You’re leaving Bravo?”
Cole nodded.
