Up as One

Summary:

Charles is tired. Monty carries him.

Notes:

I watched Julia and Robert and went "her Monty would carry Robert's Charlie" and then this was born.

Not beta read and barely edited so sorry if there are any mistakes in here.

Work Text:

“Are you alright, Charlie?”

Charles blearily looked up at Monty, his eyes unfocused. The night before the two of them had gone out on a very nice date, but as usual Monty was a bad influence and the two of them had one too many glasses of wine. This meant one thing led to another and they were up late doing other activities.

“I’m tired.” Charles said, simply. He rubbed his eyes and sent Monty a look. “How are you so cheery this morning?”

Monty smirked. “Many years of practice, sweetheart.”

They continued walking into MI5, but Charles kept falling behind. Monty’s long, giraffe-like legs and his sleepy stumbling didn’t mix well. He really wished he could’ve stayed in bed all morning, curled into Monty’s side as they often did when they had a day off. Alas, work called.

Eventually, Monty stopped at the door and waited for Charles to catch up.

“Come here.” Monty sighed but not with any malice. Charles was confused until Monty scooped him up into his arms, jostling him until he found the best position. “Comfy?”

Charles nodded, curling into Monty’s neck with a yawn.

Their fellow colleagues all gave the two men looks as Monty strode into the building, heading for their office in the basement. Charles, who normally would fuss at the attention and tell Monty to stop whatever antics he was doing, simply closed his eyes and tried not to fall back to sleep.

As they passed the canteen, Hester stepped out of the room, her tea halfway to her mouth and froze at the sight.

“Morning, Hester old girl!”

Hester blinked once, took in the sight in front of her and opened her mouth as if to speak but then immediately turned around and walked back into the canteen instead. Clearly, this wasn’t something she was prepared to deal with so early in the workday.

“I’ll see you in the office!” Monty called out before continuing down the corridor. Charles grumbled at the loud noise and Monty shushed him gently and gave him a little kiss on the forehead.

The next people they came across were Fleming, Reggie and John. The trio were crowded around a meeting room door, chatting loudly as Monty reached them.

“Long night?” Reggie teased, as John let out a low whistle and Fleming shot finger guns at the duo.

Monty flipped them off.

At least, he tried to. Instead, he lifted his hand, and Charles almost fell backwards out of his arms at the movement and Monty stumbled to catch him.

“Monty…” Charles whined.

“Sorry! Sorry!” Monty said, struggling to pull Charles back into his chest. Eventually, he managed it and with a raise of his eyebrows at the trio, he left them behind.

Monty had almost reached the steps down to the basement as Bevan turned the corner and groaned as he saw the two of them.

“Montagu! This is a professional environment!”

“But he’s tired, Johnny.” Monty whined.

Bevan shook his head in defeat. “Just go downstairs.”

Monty grinned triumphantly and blew a kiss at Bevan as he started descending the stairs.

“Do not repeat this!” Bevan called after him.

Finally, Monty reached the office door and nudged it open with his foot. Jean was already there, sat at her desk with a cup of coffee. Monty gave her a nod of acknowledgement as he carried Charles, who was halfway to sleep by this point, to their desk and laid him down on the surface.

“Monty, what the fuck?”

Monty shrugged. “He was tired.”

He slipped off his jacket and laid it over Charles curled form. He went to step away but Charles grabbed Monty’s hand before he could with a squeeze.

“I love you.”

“I love you too.” Monty punctuated with a kiss on the top of his head. He then spun around to face Jean, leaving Charles to sleep, and took two steps over to her desk and perching on top. “So, what’s on the agenda today?”

“I don’t know why I’m even surprised anymore.” Jean said, ignoring Monty’s question, eyes flicking over to Charles.

Charles smiled softly, pulling Monty’s jacket tighter and drifted off to sleep at the sound of their bickering. He loved his tall, pretentious, idiot.
