The ones we lose are the ones we loved most.

Summary:

House, an omega, and Wilson, an alpha, had just began the process of having their first pup.
When House starts pupping, he goes through many complications. Will the pup make it?

Notes:

I have never written any Omega/Alpha/Beta fics so idk what I’m doing tbh. Okay I can’t lie, I have no idea why I wrote this.

Chapter 1: Birth

Chapter Text

House was nine months pregnant with his and Wilson’s pup, they didn’t know if it was male or female yet, so it’d be a surprise.

House was overjoyed to find out that he was pregnant, Wilson had been too, until they realised that a) that means a lot of responsibility and b) many things can go wrong.

But they had hope.

House was officially on maternity leave, forced by Cuddy since she thought that the stress could be potentially harmful towards both the pup.

So he was chilling at home. Watching some real Omegas of New Jersey.

Everything was chill until Wilson phoned him to let him know that he couldn’t go home until a couple hours after his shift.

This made House extremely upset, he loved it when his alpha was home, he’d scent him, snuggle up with him and occasionally they’d go to the movies.

But now he wasn’t coming home until later, all his plans were ruined.

Add that to the increasing discomfort in his lower back and that was enough to make House cry.

So he did. He sat there and cried for a couple minutes, before getting himself together and heading into the bedroom for a nap.

—————

Wilson managed to convince three patients to reschedule their appointment times, they knew his omega was expecting, so it didn’t take much persuasion of them to agree, just so that he could get back on time to spend some time with him.

He was making his way out when his phone rang. It was House.

So of course, he instantly picked up.

What if he was in labour or had gotten hurt?

“House? What’s going on? Are you in labour?”

“Calm down Alpha. No I’m not in labour. Can you get me some snacks when you come home please? The pup wants something salty. Popcorn.”

“I’m on my way home now, I’ll stop by the store, is that all you’d like? I can get you one of those big dr peppers too if you’d like?”

“Ooh. Yes! I’ll see you then!”

“I’ll be back in thirty minutes, take care.”

He then hung up and continued his journey to his car.

But while he was in the lobby, Cuddy stopped him. She had a silver gift bag in her hand.

“For you, House and the pup, when it arrives, take care James.” She then left.

“Thank you.” He said, bewildered.

He didn’t open it yet though.

—————

At the store, Wilson grabbed a couple bags of salted popcorn, a pint of chocolate ice cream and a large dr pepper, along with some soft blankets for when the pup came, as House hated the hospital blankets and would not want to be covered in one of them for very long.

He’d use them when he was in labour as he wouldn’t want to get anything on his fluffy ones, but he’d probably refuse afterwards.

Once he had checked out, he jumped in the car and began the journey home.

House was pretty pleased when Wilson returned, he hoisted his lethargic body out of bed and walked up to Wilson, scenting him with joy. His bond mark visible for House to see.

“Yeah, I’m back. I got you salted popcorn, chocolate ice cream, Dr Pepper and some blankets for in the hospital. Cuddy also gave this to me for us and the pup but I don’t know what it is.”

He held out the silver gift bag for House to take, which he did, but very cautiously.

He also opened it extremely cautiously, but inside, was a green blanket, forest green.

It had space for something to be embroidered on one corner.

Most likely the pups name after they picked one.

So far, if it was male, they wanted to call him Luca, and if it was female, they wanted to call her Lyla. No middle name, because they’d already be a House- Wilson and four names was deemed as too many. Especially when it came to learning to write their full name in pre K.

House was really pleased with the gift and made sure he would text Cuddy a thank you message.

Happy with his snacks, House lazed on the sofa until Wilson joined him. They watched the Mandolorian and Grogu until House started falling asleep.

Wilson gently woke him up and helped take him to bed.

—————

House woke in the dead of night with a sharp pain in his lower back.

He shifted slightly, laying his baby bump on his maternity pillow and tried to fall asleep.

But just as he was dozing off again, he felt the pain.

Not just any pain, that was a labour pain. He ignored though until he decided it was probably best to get up and go to the hospital.

“Wilson, wake up. Come on wake up.”

James sat up quickly, looking over at House with concern etched into his features.

“Huh? Whats going on?”

“I think we need to get ready to go to the hospital.”

“You’re feeling pains?”

“Yeah, every half hour, lasting three minutes.”

“Are we sure it’s not Braxton hicks?”

“Fairly sure. Oooohhh…” He moaned as another pain took him in its grasp.

“Shit okay, I’ll get the bags, you make your way to the car. Do you want to get dressed first?”

“Yeah, I’ll need a hand though.”

Wilson carefully helped House with putting his shirt on and getting his pajama pants off.

Ever since his bump had been noticeable, House stopped wearing a night shirt, instead opting to go bare on the top. His reasoning was that the bump would stretch his shirts, but Wilson knew it was because the bump wouldn’t fit under his shirts he already had and he didn’t want to buy another shirt. He’d begrudgingly gotten new work shirts after he realised he couldn’t go bare at work.

So this made getting dressed quickly a lot easier.

House, with Wilson’s help, got a pair of grey sweat pants on, some socks and his comfiest running shoes, though he doesn’t do a lot of running, his shoes help to reduce impact on his thigh when he steps.

“Right. Go to the car, call out if you need help, I’ll get the bags from the closet.

Good job they had packed bags last month, saves time.

House made it to the car with no worries.

Wilson followed behind him, three bags packed, one for him, one for House and one with green and neutral clothes for the pup. They also had one pink and one blue onesie so that when the team came to see their pup, they’d know the gender.

“You doing okay?” Wilson asked hastily, he was nervous.

“Yeah, pains are getting closer together now, they’re lasting longer too.”

“I think that means we’ll be meeting our pup tonight or tomorrow.”

Wilson squeezed his mates hand, then began to drive.

While driving, Wilson had House dial Cuddy, then out the phone on speaker.

“Hey Wilson, what’s up?”

“House is in labour, contractions are 25 minutes apart lasting 5 minutes.”

“I’m on my way to the hospital now, how far away are you?”

“Ten minutes.”

“Ughhhhh. Fuck me this hurts…” House cried.

“Try to relax, I’ll alert the maternity ward.”

“Thanks Lisa, we’ll see yo-” Just then, House’s water broke.

“Crap his water just broke.” Wilson almost yelled.

“House, I’m going to need you to stay calm, can you feel the pups head in between your legs?”

“No. No not yet.”

“That’s good, I’m here, there’s a wheelchair waiting for you at the emergency entrance. I’ll hang up now.”

House put the phone back into Wilson’s coat pocket, then gently rubbed his bump.

They stopped outside the entrance and Cuddy, along with a nurse and OBGYN were waiting for them.

Wilson helped House out of the car and into the wheelchair, they then went up to the maternity ward where House was given a private room.

——————

An hour passed and the pain was worse than anything House had ever felt before.

He was now 6 centimetres dilated. The labour seemed to be progressing fast, maybe even too fast.

“Breathe, you’re doing so well.” Wilson lovingly said while House breathed through a contraction.

“If I ever… say I want another pup… sterilise me on the spot.” House threatened.

“Okay babe.” Wilson chuckled, he knew House meant nothing by it and would probably still want a second pup.

Another hour later, House’s labour and delivery doctor entered the room, she was a kind Beta, lots of experience delivering pups. She checked his dilation and seemed pleased with his progress.

“Alright doctor House, you’re at eight centimetres so it shouldn’t be too long now u til you can start pushing.”

“Thank you.” The bonded couple both said as she left the room.

Not too long until they could meet their pup.

“Are you hoping for a girl or a boy?” House asked Wilson, who startled slightly at the question.

He hadn’t really thought about it before.

“I don’t mind. I think I’d like a boy, but I’d love a girl, I’ll love them either way. How about you?”

“Don’t care as long as they are happy and healthy.”

“That’s a good attitude to have, if it’s a girl, then I don’t think we should just dress her up in dresses, I think we should make her clothing more neutral, same with a boy, not just blue and red and green, but more neutral and then when they grow up a bit, let them pick what they like.”

“Yeah… oooohhhhhh… I like that idea, I feel like I need to push can you get Gonzalez back in here?”

Wilson paged Gonzalez and she came within three minutes.

After another cervix check, House was allowed to start pushing.

“Right, you’re at ten centimetres so you can start trying to push now, as soon as you feel a contraction begin, bear down and push as much as you can, if you need to change how you’re pushing, I’ll let you know.”

“Come on House, you can do this.”

As soon as House felt the next contraction, he tried pushing.

He pushed and pushed for what felt like an eternity, it’d been three hours since he’d reached 10 centimetres, but still no pup.

Gonzalez was starting to look concerned now.

“Right, it’s been a few hours and I’m not seeing any progress. I’d like to try having you lay on your side, lift your left leg, then push. Can you do that for me?”

“Y-yeah.”

“Come on babe, you’ve got this, let’s bring our pup into the world.”

House got himself flipped over, once as comfortable as could be, he started trying to push again.

However it made no change.

“I want to try one last thing, Wilson can you raise the bed so that he’s in a sitting position, but leave a slight angle to it?”

“Like this?” Wilson asked as the bed clicked into place.

“Perfect. Right House. Try pushing again, this position should bring the pups head downwards, if not, then we need to talk about a caesarean. I’m going to put a fetal monitor around your abdomen so that I can keep an eye on its heart rate, I need to know if it’s going into distress.”

The monitor pressed into his abdomen and a heart beat appeared on the screen. Slightly elevated, but not too bad yet.

House again pushed with everything he had.

But it didn’t work.

“I’m sorry, I know you wanted a natural birth but I don’t think it’s going to happen without endangering you or the pup. I’ll talk to dr Cuddy about getting you on the schedule within the next ten minutes. For now though, try to relax as much as possible.”

With that, Gonzalez left. Wilson helped House to cover up again, pulling the blanket back down to his feet. They shared an anxious glance as they heard Gonzalez and Cuddy talk outside.

“It’s not going well, we need to do a C-section, if we continue naturally, him or the pup, or even both could lose their life. The pup is already showing signs of distress and I don’t want to further escalate that. House is also losing blood, I don’t want him to pass out.”

“I understand, have you talked to them about it?”

“Yeah, they didn’t say anything but I think that’s part of the shock. I’ve told House to relax as much as possible for now to try and keep the pup relaxed as more stress from the mother can cause worse fetal distress.”

“I’ll get them on the list, he will be next in, page the pre op team to bring him down. Wilson can stay for the whole procedure. House will be given a transfusion too if needed.”

—————

House was wheeled through to pre op where he was given a spinal block and mild sedation. They had also hooked him up to a blood bag.

He’d be awake for the surgery, he wouldn’t feel any of the pain and his stress levels would lower, making it safer for his pup and him.

“Alright Dr House, we’re ready for you now.” The all too chipper surgical assistant informed them.

Then House was taken into the OR, Wilson at his side.

Gonzalez was the main surgeon performing the procedure.

“Try to stay as calm as possible, I know it’s scary, but it’ll all be over soon.”

“I’ll try.” House replied.

Gonzalez made the first cut into House’s abdomen, exposing the fatty tissue, she cut through the remaining tissue and then exposed the uterus. Then the cut through the uterus was made.

Wilson held House’s hand and watched as their pup was lifted out of House and rushed into a NICU bassinet. Where it was then rushed off to be given help.

“Congratulations, it’s a boy.” Gonzalez happily told them.

Tears flowed down House’s face and Wilson made an effort to wipe them as much as he could.

“We have a son.” Wilson cried softly.

“Luca House-Wilson.” House replied.

“Congratulations guys. We’ll get you into the maternity post surg ICU in a couple minutes, just need to close you up and put some dressings on these incisions.”

————

House was sleeping peacefully in the post maternity wards post surgical ICU, they still hadn’t been allowed to see Luca.

But they had been given the birth certificate to fill out. Surname(s): House-Wilson. Forename: Luca DOB: May 27th 2008 Weight: 5lbs 8 ounces Height: 19 inches.

He had just made the height and weight requirements.

Now House was resting, he had one of his fluffy blankets that Wilson had bought him and some morphine flowing through his IV.

Wilson was anxiously awaiting news on his son.

Cuddy came through with the bassinet.

There was Luca, sleeping in the same position as House.

Like mother like son I guess.

“He can only be here for a little bit, but he’s stable for now, he’s a little jaundiced and his heart rate is still elevated, but other than that he seems healthy.”

House roused from sleep when he heard Cuddy talking.

His eyes fell on the bassinet and he smiled warmly.

Luca cooed soflty.

Wilson gently picked him up and passed him over to his mother.

He opened his eyes for the first time, they were bright blue, just like his mothers.

“Hey.” He whispered into Luca’s ear.

Luca sniffed at House’s wrist, scenting his mother, that warm, hazelnut, which meant safety.

He started to fall asleep again.

“Am I allowed to try feeding him?”

“Yeah no problem, if you have any concerns then let us know, oh and if you brought the blanket, I can take it to go get embroidered now.”

Wilson passed her the blanket, on her way out she shut the curtain.

Luca latched onto House’s nipple and began suckling for milk.

He kept dribbling it but that wasn’t of any concern.

Once full, he let go and looked like House used to after a long drinking session, before he had become pregnant.

House then burped him gently.

Wilson walked over with the blue onesie, took Luca over to the changing table and got him all dressed up.

He looked adorable.

Then there was a knock on the door.

Cuddy was back.

The blanket now read Luca House- Wilson.

They swaddled him in it and puffed a soft breath then went back to sleep.

House’s team appeared, they looked extremely excited.

Each of the three ducklings had gifts.

“Hi, it’s a boy then, congratulations!” Cameron whispered as she walked into the room, passing the gift bag to Wilson. She then sat on one of the visitors chairs.

Chase and Foreman walked in together, the two were freshly bonded so had white gauze pads still taped to their necks.

“Congrats guys!” Foreman also whispered, noticing that the pup was sleeping.

“Whats his name?” Chase asked tentatively.

“Luca House- Wilson.” James replied, both he and House looked exhausted, the stress of the delivery was evident on both their faces.

House was starting to fall asleep again, so Wilson took Luca in his arms and quietly talked to the team while House slept.

The day had been a stressful one, but their son was now here.

Everything would be fine.

Right?
