Trial And Error

Summary:

Maverick knew this'd be hard, but... shit. His hands and arms are bruised and bleeding, sore from having to practice positions all day and getting rocks in various shapes and sizes getting thrown at him. His mind keeps telling him he's not built for this until someone far, far better gives him a helping hand.

Notes:

i need to get off of this cursed website 😭

Work Text:

If you had told Maverick a week ago that his training as a White Belt would start with him getting fucked by Controlled Flight and Volatile, he'd tell you to go to hell. But, now that he's actually a Rumbler in training, it's starting to seem more and more likely that maybe this isn't as cool as he was hoping for.

Sure, he gets to bend the Earth and its rock, but the training that comes with it is tiring at best and painful at worst. Every Disc, every Wall, every Pillar that's thrown at him bruises and batters his body in a way he genuinely didn't know was possible.

He finds himself in a public park in his third day, trying to get his Speed Discs more consistent when he sees a shadow looming over him and feels that unfortunately familiar pain of getting hit in the back of the head with Lucky Dice. He's been through this enough times at this point to know that it'll eventually stop hurting, but he's at his breaking point now.

His arms and hands hurt, bruised and bloodied from all of the bullshit he's had to put them through in the past couple of days, and he's pretty sure the stress is making him sick. So, when he turns around at the Red Belt who just whacked him in the back of the head, he just... leaves.

No yelling, no crash outs or "can you fuck off," he just silently gets on the skyway and leaves.

He thinks about quitting after that, but he decides against it. One more day, he thinks to himself. One more day of trying this out, and if it does end up going well? Cool! Then he keeps going and keeps pushing himself.

And if it doesn't work out? Then he leaves.

So, when he comes back to that same park the next day, he's surprised to see plenty of Black Belts all practicing and having fun.

And Maverick feels anxiety about stepping up to them and asking for help, until one of them turns around and looks at him. The guy's got white whiskers painted on his face, and he... smiles?

He invites Maverick over, recognizing his White Belt and offering some actual help.

So he goes to the group, and learns.

And because of that... he stays.

And he learns it's all just trial and error.
