Chapter 1: The Ever-Changing Book of Desire

Chapter Text

Dark Mist Cookie had been a Cookie of Deceit for a while now, she had joined her master's following long after Black Sapphire Cookie, perhaps even a decade or two. Dark Mist Cookie had a different colour palette than Black Sapphire Cookie and her master's typical bright colour and black, her clothes were a usually a toned down blue, almost navy-like. She still technically was the newest Deceitling, obviously before Candy Apple Cookie was created. But just as Candy Apple Cookie couldn't remember her origins, she had just been a apple that transformed into a fully-grown Cookie, Dark Mist Cookie couldn't remember her origins either. But the twist here was that Dark Mist Cookie wasn't created by her master, she was a Cookie with a life before.. or was she?

So, today Dark Mist Cookie decided she would try and explore the Spire's library. She knew that the books couldn't fully be trusted but they always held atleast one droplet of truth in them, she learnt that simply asking Shadow Milk Cookie would be met with the same laughter that would always grow more distant when she left with no new knowledge of her own past. Black Sapphire Cookie was a different matter because she could never find him if she had him in mind, he would only appear if their master had a task for them both and the exception was when she first joined; when Dark Mist Cookie had woken up on the Spire's floors, when she had met eye to eye with both her master and Black Sapphire Cookie.

Dark Mist Cookie continued her walk in the Spire, her eyes glimmering in the blue light in hues that spanned across the tower. Dark Mist Cookie's expression was neutral but she felt a tang of confusion that was due to the Spire's ever-changing housing. Dark Mist Cookie remained silent and was about to take a left– or was it a right? Either way, Dark Mist Cookie knew she was lost. The Spire changed again. She walked forward slowly, taking her time with no haste on her little journey. Truth be told, she did like the changes, she treated it like a game sometimes but seeing her pathways to her room differentiate time and time again, with no warning made her feel a small bit fearful. The domain she lived in was ever-changing, ever-existing and her master had ever-knowing eyes and knowledge; if the Spire could change according to his will or on its own, was she really safe if she crossed him? The Cookie barely shook her head but her small fear didn't disappear, it stayed in her chest. A gut feeling, perhaps? Dark Mist Cookie was about to continue walking when suddenly she staggered after hitting something, she looked up and saw Black Sapphire Cookie.

“Well, well, well, look who we have here?” Black Sapphire Cookie's theatrical voice ringed out and Dark Mist Cookie regained her position as he continued to speak. “So, Dark Mist Cookie,” He was addressing her, Dark Mist Cookie looked into his lilac slit pupils with her own black and toned down cyan blue eyeicings. Dark Mist Cookie said nothing but Black Sapphire Cookie knew he had her attention and smiled greatly, his facial expression almost darkening for a split moment, Dark Mist Cookie did not notice it. “You're searching about your past again, right? What makes you so sure that you'll find your answers in the libary?” Black Sapphire Cookie put his free hand to his mouth in a mockery act of shock.

“Oops, you were just wandering around, weren't you? Well, you might find your answers in the library!” He finished and removed his hand, smiling at the smaller Cookie. Dark Mist Cookie thought about how Black Sapphire Cookie had appeared from nowhere for a brief second but the thought disappeared and she nodded, a way of saying thank you to Black Sapphire Cookie. And as she was about to move to her right, Black Sapphire Cookie moved infront of her way, effectively blocking her pathway. “Now, now, let me show you the way, dear Dark Mist Cookie!” He mused and turned around quickly, expecting Dark Mist Cookie to follow as he walked. She followed. Dark Mist Cookie looked around the Spire as she entered new hallways, new corridors, new everything really. She tried to remember small details like a giant rabbit painting that was displayed with a golden rim and a.. new red carpet on the floor? She didn't question it.

Dark Mist Cookie almost bumped into Black Sapphire Cookie but he moved quickly and opened a white door that had blue accents, he tilted his head everso slightly. “So?” He started and Dark Mist Cookie waited for Black Sapphire Cookie to finish his sentence but he said nothing which confused Dark Mist Cookie, the two stared at eachother in silence for a moment. And suddenly, Black Sapphire Cookie had vanished. Dark Mist Cookie wasted no time rushing towards the door that was almost closed shut, she couldn't push it because it was too hard. Why was that? She squeezed herself through and then began to walk through the milky white walls, Dark Mist Cookie felt her fear slightly rise so she moved her left hand near her hips, or whatever hips she had.

Dark Mist Cookie looked around the library's contents, finding books and noticing the beautiful patterns on the walls; they were wavy cerulean blue lines on the walls and the lighting made them look even more beautiful than what she imagined them to look like without the Spire's slightly dark lighting, even if the lighting was like that for as long as she could remember. Dark Mist Cookie was mentally startled by footsteps now only registering behind her and she turned to see Black Sapphire Cookie holding a book with a smile plastered on his face. Dark Mist Cookie took one good look at it and her lips curved ever-so slightly. Black Sapphire Cookie turned on his heels or boots or shoes, Dark Mist Cookie did not care enough about them to ask and she never got to see them up close until today anyway, she followed the older Deceitling as he led her to a table that had no chairs.

Black Sapphire Cookie was at the opposite end of the table in a blink of a eye, he held the book in his hands and then placed the book on the table, pushing it towards where Dark Mist Cookie stood. “Open it.” He said, still smiling now. Dark Mist Cookie stood still, her fear from earlier had almost began to reach what would be normal levels for other Cookies but to her it would be odd, she blinked as Black Sapphire Cookie began to speak once more. “This is 'The Ever-Changing Book of Desire'! If the holder has a strong desire for something, the knowledge or whatever the holder wants to know will appear in the book's pages. But be warned: there is a catch!” Dark Mist Cookie listened carefully, her eyes catching the light almost perfectly.

“The Ever-Changing Book of Desire comes with a cost and a limit. It will only show you a portion of the holder's desire, in this case being your past,” He paused, looking into Dark Mist Cookie's eyeicings. “The Ever-Changing Book of Desire may have unintended side effects for you, Dark Mist Cookie. You may forget a few of your own memories, but it's nothing too large! It's just a few smaller, insignificant stuff like Candy Apple Cookie's blabbering rant about Master Shadow Milk Cookie to you.” Black Sapphire Cookie stated and gave the Cookie a charming smile, gripping his microphone and twirling it around. “Have fun, my dear Dark Mist Cookie.” Black Sapphire Cookie, who Dark Mist Cookie had rarely ever seen, disappeared as if he was never there in the first page without a single trace.

Dark Mist Cookie took a deep breath, not on purpose but on accident and opened the book that appeared to look very small. Was all what Black Sapphire Cookie said true? Dark Mist Cookie didn't know. She opened the book and was met with the first page, it held one paragraph. Dark Mist Cookie blinked, her position shifting slightly as she began to read the page's text in her head. ‘Once upon a time, there was a Cookie who tended to Cookies' gardens. She had a kind, caring heart and always had a desire to help Cookies, even if a few of her customers were rude. But for a long time, the Cookie felt her work wasn't right for her and so she quit her job.’ Dark Mist Cookie stared at the page, looking for another paragraph, a continuation, but nothing came.

She let out a small hum of acknowledgement and glanced at the next page, it was blank. Dark Mist Cookie closed the book and turned around, walking in the library and eventually finding a exit. Dark Mist Cookie, who was now in the Spire's hallways, continued walking to try and find her way to her room. She didn't have any special powers but she could blend well with shadows if they were the right colour and fitted right in with whatever clothes she wore, it wasn't really a extraordinary power like her master's or Black Sapphire Cookie's but it was one she held dear deep inside of her.

The Cookie of Deceit continued her way in the seemingly endless hallways, she could no longer find the painting of the rabbit that had a golden rim nor could she find the floored red carpet and she had no reaction to this, the Spire was always changing but never like this. Still, Dark Mist Cookie continued her pursuit to her room, eventually finding the dark navy-blue door after what seemed like thirty minutes to her. Dark Mist Cookie opened her door and closed it with a soft click, she had learnt a little bit about her past and apparently she tended to gardens.. but how much of it was true?

Dark Mist Cookie could heard Black Sapphire Cookie's voice replaying in her head; “The Ever-Changing Book of Desire comes with a cost and a limit. It will only show you a portion of the holder's desire, in this case being your past.” A pause, her eyebrows did not furrow as she recalled everything fully. “You may forget a few of your own memories, but it's nothing too large! It's just a few smaller, insignificant stuff..” Dark Mist Cookie moved towards her bed, her bedsheets were the same black and blue colour that her master always had, she had no opinion on the colour scheme. She sat down on the chair near it and closed her eyes, thinking to herself about what just happened today for her.

She was interrupted by a muffled shout, it must've been Candy Apple Cookie again. Dark Mist Cookie still sat on her chair but her eyes fluttered open a small inch, she didn't intend on listening but she couldn't tune out the voices either. “...Isn't Master Shadow Milk Cookie so great?.. KYA!!! I KNOW!” It was a bunch of nonsense being spewed out by Candy Apple Cookie and either way Dark Mist Cookie didn't care. “KYAHAHAHAHA!... I just love Master...” Candy Apple Cookie's muffled voice began to get even more muffled as she walked in the hallways, Dark Mist Cookie closed her eyes again, focusing on thinking to herself.

Now, where was she? Dark Mist Cookie was a gardener in her life prior to meeting her master and Black Sapphire Cookie, which raised questions such as how she exactly met them and what-not. Dark Mist Cookie had supposedly had a strong heart, a desire to help Cookies. That didn't make much sense to her, Dark Mist Cookie barely felt any strong emotions at all, so for her to be a good-willed Cookie confused her at the very least. Dark Mist Cookie's eyes tightened slightly and she continued to think, trying to piece whatever she had found. She quit her job due to it not being right for her, even though she had liked helping Cookies and cleaning their gardens. Either way, she knew not everything is permanent and she had a few rude customers so that probably made her want to quit even more.

Dark Mist Cookie furrowed her eyesbrows, her closed eyeslids becoming strained by just a bit. She felt a small amount of frustration, why couldn't she learn more about her life prior to the Spire? But perhaps it was as Black Sapphire Cookie had to Dark Mist Cookie, did she really deserve to stay in her room all day? No, where did that come from? Dark Mist Cookie wondered if she did deserve to learn about her past, perhaps she didn't. “GAHHH!!! DARK MIST COOKIE!!!!!” Dark Mist Cookie jolted and snapped her head towards her door, that was Candy Apple Cookie calling her name. “Candy Apple Cookie, there's no need to scream.” And that was Black Sapphire Cookie.

Dark Mist Cookie stood upright and walked over to her door, opening it slowly. “Ah, there you are!” Dark Mist Cookie opened the door fully, her eyeicings widening slightly as she was not only met with the two other Cookies of Deceit, but with her master aswell. “Master?” She said slowly, her voice wasn't low but wasn't loud either. Shadow Milk Cookie looked down at her, he was floating in the air and smiled darkly at his other minion. “Get out of your room already, you FOOLISH COOKIE!!” Candy Apple Cookie yelled, her voice was annoyingly high-pitched but it didn't bother Dark Mist Cookie at all, not anymore. “I have a show for you all!” Shadow Milk Cookie explained to them and then with a snap of his fingers, they were all on a stage. Well, only her master was.

Shadow Milk Cookie smiled and clapped his hands, a bunch of puppets came falling from the sky, making Dark Mist Cookie wonder if that was supposed to be a reference to something. “Alright, my dearest audience! Today, I have a tale about a certain someone, who will remain anonymous for now!” He paused, glancing over at all three of his minions and the cardboard cutouts of the Gingergang and the Ancients.

Dark Mist Cookie was brought back to reality by Shadow Milk Cookie clearing his throat, she was no longer in the theatre's blue chair but standing in the hallway with Shadow Milk Cookie staring right down at her with a eerie smile on his face. “Dark Mist Cookie, I have something I'd like to speak to you about. Mind listening?” He said, floating closer to the Cookie of Deceit and Dark Mist Cookie nodded her head. “Now, about your past..” Dark Mist Cookie felt her fear from earlier come back to her and she straightened her position, trying to ignore the fear. “I've heard from a little bat that you've been wondering and trying to find out about your life prior to seeing myself and Black Sapphire Cookie and..” Her master paused, staring at her with his mismatched cyan and cerulean blue eyeicings.

“I just can't believe that, Dark Mist Cookie! I rather you not find out your past but it's not like I can stop you so tell me, what did you find out today?” Shadow Milk Cookie smiled brightly at Dark Mist Cookie who did not return it, instead she looked down at the checkered floor which was black and blue.. when did that happen. “I.. I found out that I was a gardener in my life before the Spire, before I met you and Black Sapphire Cookie.” Dark Mist Cookie explained, her squarish eyeicings narrowing ever-so slightly but Shadow Milk Cookie only laughed. “Ahh, the sweet Ever-Changing Book of Desire, Cookies can't get enough knowledge! Dark Mist Cookie, you are just so silly!” He smiled and flew up into the air, waving his staff and a portal tore through reality. “Come on!” Shadow Milk Cookie said, quickly moving to his minion and rushing through the portal.

Dark Mist Cookie fell to the ground, she looked up and slowly stood, dusting herself off in the process. Shadow Milk Cookie looked around the place, they were in Dark Mist Cookie's room. “Sheesh, this place is booooring!” He said, still floating in the air as his eyes landed on his minion. Shadow Milk Cookie grinned playfully as a idea came up in his head and he waved his staff again, much to Dark Mist Cookie's dismay. With a blue puff of smoke, Dark Mist Cookie coughed twice and looked up, seeing her newly transformed room. All of her personal items were floating above the ground slightly and her painted dark cerulean-blue walls were now a dark navy with bright blue stars that had a white glow to them on the wall. “There we go, much better!” Shadow Milk Cookie seemed content with his work, moving incredibly close to Dark Mist Cookie.

“I have a little something for you, my dear gal!~” Shadow Milk Cookie sing-songed and a blue star brooch appeared in his hand, he handed it over to Dark Mist Cookie whose gaze lingered on it. “But wait..” Dark Mist Cookie watched as the brooch jumped out of her hands, transforming into its true form; a cerulean-blue ribbon with a star on the middle, it swiftly moved and wrapped itself around her neck nicely. “And before you ask, the ribbon is just to help you explore Spire easily while in the dark as it'll cast a subtle, faint glow.” Dark Mist Cookie's eyeicings reflected the glow of the light that dissipated, leaving only her alone in the strange bright cyan mess that was now her personal headquarters.

Dark Mist Cookie breathed slowly, she had taken off the ribbon, placing it on her nightstand near her bed. Dark Mist Cookie let out a small, deep breath that had come to her unknowingly. She moved towards her floating bed, managing to lay down on it and closed her eyes, thinking to herself again. Today was very different than usual and she had no idea on what was in store for her tomorrow.
