Kakashi has just finished training with Minato-sensei and is walking back to the Hatake Compound. Tomorrow he will leave for the frontlines. So I have two weeks alone with Father. I should catch some fish. Maybe i can get him to get up from the futon and we can eat together.
Kakashi opens the shōji and toes off his shoes while calling out, "Father! I'm home!" He closes the door and not hearing a response, an uneasy feeling forms a pit on the bottom of his stomach.
"Father?" He calls out again worriedly while he lowers his mask and sniffs at the air so he can locate him. He pauses and then after a heartbeat of silence decides that with how much blood he smells they're about to feast. "Did you go hunting?" He asks half-exited that his father had enough energy that he could hunt, and half-upset that he went alone. We usually go hunting together, but it's okay if it means that he's feeling better.
Kakashi rushes to his fathers's sturdy and goes to slide the door open but a scent holds him back. "Did you drop a kunai and tried to catch it in the air? Because if yes, then thats highly hypocritical of you, you always say to just let it fall to the ground." He rushes out feeling panicked. He still hasn't answered.
"Dad? Can you answer?" Maybe he’s busy? No. He always answers, even if it's something important. I wonder if I — "Daddy?" He breathes out, heart pounding in his chest while he frantically knocks on the wood. "Can you open the door?" Why is he not answering! He takes two deep breaths as a means to calm himself but the only thing that he succeeds in, is increasing his panic as the scent of his father's blood burns his nostrils.
Kakashi swallows a lump in his throat, blinking away the sudden blur in his eyes and carefully slides open the door.
"Daddy!" He rushes towards the kneeling form of his father and tries to sake him awake causing him to topple over on his side. "Get up." He grunts. "This is no place for naps." His hands come away covered in blood. "You're fine, it's fine. We can clean this up so just get up. I can fix this." He wipes his hands on his gennin vest and tries shaking him awake one more time. "Daddy!" He cries out, breathing rapidly.
Kakashi reaches down on his father's stomach and pulls out the tantō embedded in his gut, placing it beside him. "I'm sorry. I'll be good. I can be good. Just wake up. I'm sorry. Can you hear me? Daddy? I said I'm sorry. Please." His voice cracks with emotion and his breathing increases even more, as he starts bawling. He lays beside the still form of his father, his face nestled at the crook of his neck and starts pulling at his father's arms until they're around him, incasing him.
His sobbing slowly shifts into shallow breaths as his eyes unfocus, until there's no sound except his slow quiet breathing and the cicadas outside, chirring in the summer heat.
