Narcissa Malfoy’s bright blue eyes flashed in the shifting light of Madam Malkin’s shop as she wandered through the aisles of robes and dresses with her eleven-year-old pride and joy.

“But Mother……” Draco frowned as they walked along, his hand clutched in hers, “What if I don’t like Hogwarts?……..Maybe I don’t want to go to school.”

Narcissa glanced down lovingly at her beloved boy, “Draco, darling………can’t you be a little grateful? I finally convinced your father Hogwarts would be best….he would have sent you all the way to Durmstrang! You won’t be far at all there, my dear. If you need your father and I, you only have to write us and we’ll be at your side within the hour.”

“I’ve never been away from home…..ever!” Draco frowned as an adorable pout formed on his face before he asked, “Can’t you just tell Father I’d rather be tutored?”

“Will you at least be fitted for a robe?” Narcissa asked as they came to stand in front of wide, purple, velvet curtains, “Just for today, sweetheart? In case you change your mind……you never know, you may really enjoy school. You may make a lot of friends there!”

“I don’t need friends.” Draco scowled.

He looked over in annoyance as Madam Malkin herself stepped out from behind the velvet curtains and greeted them with a beaming smile, “Ah, good afternoon Mrs. Malfoy…..and this little gentleman must be Draco! Come for your Hogwarts robes, I presume?”

Draco huffed as he glanced up at Narcissa who smiled wryly as she sweetly asked again in a whisper, “Won’t you do it for me, dear? Please?”

He let out a forced breath as he released his mother’s hand and stomped over to Madam Malkin, who ignored her young customer’s reluctance while she cheerfully began to chatter.

Narcissa could still hear her speaking as she sat down in one of the waiting chairs while her son was fitted for his school robes.

She had no idea that single hour would not only change Draco’s mind, but the course of his life entirely.

Draco grew more and more irritated as he was promptly stuffed into a drapey, black school robe while Madam Malkin flurried around him.

He wasn’t sure if it was her frantic movements or the multitude of pins that annoyed him more but finally, eventually, it came to a restful stop as he heard a bell chime.

“Hold on for me just a moment, won’t you, dear?” Madam Malkin chirped at Draco, “I’ve got you pinned well enough, see how these feel while I get started on the next.”

“The next what?” Draco snapped but before he was answered, Madam Malkin whisked herself away behind the purple velvet curtains on the opposite side of the room.

Draco grouched and griped under his breath as he turned this way and that, his pale face tight with disapproval as he looked at his bleak, black school robe.

The sleeves seemed too tight and the body too long.

What kind of school made students wear robes that dragged the ground?

He’d be filthy by the end of-

The purple velvet curtain parted suddenly.

Draco blinked in surprise as a short, dark-haired boy stepped up onto the fitting platform beside him.

A similar black robe hung around the boy’s shoulders concealing his body.

“Hello.” Draco spoke before he thought better of it, “I’m Draco Malfoy.”

“Hello.” The boy nodded.

Draco’s eyes widened as his gray stare was transfixed by a brilliant emerald gaze behind thick, round glasses.

That scorching gaze of green fire seemed to look all the way into his soul.

Draco’s mouth fell open as he realized from the voice and the name that the boy beside him was no boy at all.

“I’m Harriet Potter.” The girl nodded.

Draco’s pale cheeks tinted a very unflattering shade of pink as he writhed under Harriet’s mesmerizing stare, a young man of only eleven stupefied without a single wand wave.

Harriet stood looking at Draco for the painfully long moment it took him to recover his voice.

“A-Are you going to Hogwarts?” He croaked.

“Yes.” Harriet nodded, “Are you?”

Draco swallowed as he quickly fought to maintain his dignity.

The Malfoys’ wealth impressed everyone, surely Harriet Potter would be like everyone.

“Of course.” Draco sniffed, “Father keeps going on about getting the lighter robe but the heavier ones are more expensive. I told him I absolutely demand he gets a full set of them. I can’t expect to wander around those old, stone hallways shivering, can I?”

“…….I suppose not.” Harriet frowned as she glanced away.

It angered Draco that she dared take her eyes off him when he could not do the same with her.

“Is your father going to buy you a full set then?” He asked.

Those fascinating emeralds hit him squarely in the face again as Harriet turned to look at him once more and shrugged, “His money will, I suppose…….My father’s dead.”

Draco shut his mouth.

His mother and father had been selective about his education up until that point.

He had never heard of Harriet Potter before.

Draco had never really had much interaction with other children, yet he still realized he had committed a terrible faux pas as the girl with glowing, green eyes stepped down and walked towards the curtain.

“Well………you can’t just leave!” Draco blurted out before he could stop himself.

He had been raised as a prince.

How dare the most beautiful girl he had ever seen think she could just turn her back on him without so much as a goodbye!

“………What am I to do?” Harriet asked.

“Explain to me why your eyes are so green.” Draco scowled, “They remind me of dragon scales.”

“You remind me of my cousin Dudley.” Harriet scowled back.

“Is he your favourite cousin?” Draco smirked, his arrogance challenging his crippling infatuation.

“No.” Harriet said very simply, “I hate my cousin Dudley.”

As she did the unthinkable and turned her back on him again, Draco felt within himself a yearning desperation for the next month to pass quickly.

He had to get to Hogwarts as soon as possible, there was no other way.

How else was he ever meant to see Harriet Potter again?
