Work Text:
“If neither of you make me dinner after this, I’m never helping either of you move again.”
“Don’t you worry, hyung, we are not planning on moving anywhere any time soon and remember you were the one who willingly volunteered,” Yoongi mumbled from somewhere behind a stack of boxes.
“I volunteered out of love,” Seokjin shot back immediately. “Love fades over time. Lumbar pain is forever.”
From the bedroom, Hoseok’s comment which sounded something suspiciously of “Ok, Grandfather Kim” and a laugh rang through the apartment loud enough to bounce off the mostly bare walls. The sound settled into the place strangely easily. Almost everything except for him still felt temporary to Yoongi. Unopened boxes cluttered the living room, the couch was yet to arrive. Someone, probably Taehyung, had already misplaced the tape dispenser.
“There’s literally no space to even stand in this fuckass kitchen,” Jungkook complained, literally standing in the middle of the said fuckass kitchen with a rice cooker in his arms, when he, himself, was the first one to volunteer for helping his beloved hyungs move out of their small college dorm after graduation.
Oh, right! You’re new here! Meet boyfriends, Yoongi and Hoseok, and the rest of their friends! The couple has just finished their college and are ready for a new chapter of their life, moving in.
“There would be,” Yoongi replied, bumping into Jungkook with his hips, “if you moved.”
“Wow,” Jimin said, voice full of fake malice, while staring at two cat shaped mugs in hand. “You invite us into your apartment only to treat us like shit.”
“Our home,” Hoseok corrected automatically as he emerged from the hallway carrying exactly one pillow and absolutely nothing useful. But that didn’t matter much when Yoongi felt a pair of hands snake around his waist accompanying a chin on his shoulder. He melted into the touch as something warm twisted low in his chest at the words. Definitely not for the first time that day. This is rather a weird feeling which has been sitting with him since this morning, not anxiety for sure. Right, Yoongi? What does he even have to be anxious for?
“Our home,” Taehyung parroted his words dramatically before dropping himself directly into the middle of the floor. “I’m so emotional.”
“You’re also currently sitting on bubble wrap,” Namjoon informed or maybe even reminded him, kindly.
“Of course, I’m fragile and valuable, hence require protection from the bad bad world.”
Seokjin, ignoring Taehyung’s usual antics, pointed accusingly at the two of them. “Anyway. Drinks and dinner as compensation for all this labour at a fancy restaurant when?”
Hoseok gasped as he finally released Yoongi, who followed behind, they joined the rest in the living room. “Hyung, we’re literally just two broke college passouts.”
“No, the fuck? You aren’t,” Jungkook said immediately.
“Yes, the fuck? We are.” Yoongi defended.
“You both got hired at one of the best schools in Seoul.”
Hoseok glared at him. “I think I enjoyed your presence better when you were helping.”
Jungkook grinned unapologetically before finally sitting right next to Taehyung on the bubble wrap. “I’m just saying. It's giving rich people behavior.”
“We are not rich yet.” Yoongi deadpanned.
“You own matching mugs.”
“That really has no correlation to our financial conditions, Jiminie.”
“It means stability,” Jimin said solemnly as a subtle smile graced his face.
“It totally does.” Hoseok snorted loudly before dropping down cross-legged beside Yoongi among the boxes. Their knees knocked together automatically, familiar and careless. Yoongi barely notices the little touches anymore. Which probably is not concerning given that they’d been together since they were fourteen.
Right! Why do we keep trailing off… So the couple has been together for a decade more or less. Classic Highschool Sweethearts but none of them were exactly the popular jock or the shy nerd. That story is saved for some other time, don’t worry.
“You missed a spot,” Hoseok reached up in his hair without warning.
Yoongi blinked. “What?”
“Hair dye.” Hoseok rubbed his thumb briefly near Yoongi’s temple before showing him the faint black stain on his fingertip. “Minty ghost haunting you.”
“Tragic,” Taehyung murmured, somehow still on the floor with bubblewraps.
Hoseok sighed wistfully. “I miss my mint Yoongi so so so much already.”
“I’m a teacher now.”
“You teach Maths, the subject already sucks ass,” Hoseok argued. “You could’ve kept at least one singular rebellious strand to show that you’re a cool young teacher.”
“You sound like you want me unemployed.”
“No,” Hoseok said, bumping their shoulders together. “I sound like I just want my husband to be the cool guy he is.”
The apartment went quiet for like probably half a second.
“HUH?!” Jungkook yelled.
Hoseok burst into laughter so hard he nearly folded into Yoongi’s lap while Seokjin started loudly demanding wedding invitations they technically did not have yet. Yoongi rolled his eyes hard enough to hurt, but he could still feel that weird warmth lingering in his chest which was definitely not anxiety. Right, Yoongi? What does he even have to be anxious for?
“Actually,” Namjoon said carefully, adjusting the box in his arms, “good luck, hyung.”
Yoongi’s head snapped up so fast it almost hurt. Unfortunately, Hoseok noticed immediately.
“Good luck for what?”
Namjoon froze. For one horrible second, Yoongi genuinely considered throwing himself out the still-closed living room window. Of course, that sounds like a really smart decision that a responsible adult would make. Good job, Yoongi! The will to actually comply simmered down significantly when Namjoon’s smartass recovered with terrifying ease.
“For surviving your stinky ass full-time now,” he replied.
“Excuse you?” Hoseok gasped, offended. “I smell incredible.”
“That’s true,” Jimin, Hoseok’s former roommate, admitted.
“Thank you.”
“You smell aggressively like vanilla fabric softener.”
Hoseok pointed at him triumphantly before turning back to Namjoon. “See? How appreciated I am.”
“Stockholm syndrome,” Yoongi muttered.
Hoseok whipped around so dramatically he nearly smacked Jungkook with a throw pillow. “Min fucking Yoongi.”
“What?” Min fucking Yoongi whined, dragging the syllables.
“You said my fabric softener brings you peace.” Hoseok pouted his way through his words to feign sadness.
However, Yoongi was not having any of it, “I barely tolerate your fabric softener.”
“That’s basically a proposal.”
Yoongi nearly choked on nothing but the thin air of his - correction - their new apartment which smells of cardboards. Across the room, Namjoon suddenly looked very interested in reorganizing a box of books.
“Oh my god,” Taehyung whispered, eyes widening theatrically. “Hyung’s blushing.”
“I am not.”
“You literally are,” Jungkook said.
“I hate all of you, like literally every single one of you.”
“No you don’t, at least not me. You love me.” Hoseok replied in a sing song manner.
The worst part was that he said it so casually. So certainly. Like it was obvious. Like Yoongi loving him has become one of the most permanent things in the world. Which, fortunately, or more like, hopefully, it probably had. A peck on his cheek brought him somewhat back to the present. (Keyword: somewhat)
Hoseok grinned before getting up from the floor in one smooth motion. “Alright, none of you freeloaders seem to be helping anymore. Get back to work.”
“You say freeloaders like this isn’t your apartment,” Seokjin shouted after him.
“It is our apartment,” Hoseok corrected from somewhere down the hallway.
Yoongi looked down quickly, pretending to focus very hard on opening another box. It didn’t help the warmth crawling embarrassingly high up his neck. He could still hear Hoseok humming faintly from around somewhere a minute later while the others continued bickering around the apartment. The sound blended strangely well into the noise. Into the space. Into this.
Home, Yoongi thought distantly, before straight away deciding that was a horrifyingly emotional thing to think in front of six other people.
As if telepathetically sensing his internal crisis, Hoseok’s voice cut through the noise from across the room. “Alright,” he announced, clapping his hands once, like a leader of some sort. “You leeches should probably leave before you start unpacking our entire lives for us and find something you really didn't wanna see.”
For a moment or two, the apartment filled again with overlapping protests, laughter, and the rustle of people finally gathering their things. Jackets were pulled on, phones checked, forgotten items retrieved from random corners of the floor. Jungkook appeared twice from the kitchen to announce he had “definitely not eaten three snacks already,” which obviously everyone believed. Why? Well, why not?
Hoseok walked them to the door, still half assedly laughing at something Taehyung had said, waving dramatically as if he was sending them off on a long journey instead of out of a shared hallway.
“Text me if you manage to survive and ace adulthood in this economy,” Jimin hugged him quickly.
“I will.”
The group slowly spilled into the corridor one by one, voices fading as they argued about who had done the most work and who had done the least. Seokjin left last, still muttering something about compensation and labor rights, while Namjoon paused just outside the door. His eyes flicked briefly to Yoongi. It was extremely subtle. Almost nothing. Just a second or two longer than it was necessary.
Then he said, quietly, “Good luck.”
Yoongi exhaled through his nose. “Oh God, stop saying that.”
Namjoon’s mouth twitched like he was trying not to smile. “You’ll need it.”
And then he was gone too, footsteps disappearing down the hall after the rest. Leaving him with too many thoughts of refusal and a weird knot in his chest. The apartment door clicked shut. Silence settled in immediately after, thick and unfamiliar. For a few seconds, neither of them moved.
Hoseok leaned his shoulder against the doorframe, letting out a long breath. “Okay. That was… a lot.”
Yoongi hummed in agreement, finally stepping over Taehyung’s beloved scattered bubble wrap to sit down on the floor again. “They’re loud.”
“They’re exhausting,” Hoseok agreed, sliding down beside him until his head rested against his shoulder.
But neither of them sounded like they were complaining. Because they weren’t, they were immensely grateful. The apartment still looked unfinished as hell, half-empty shelves, boxes stacked in uneven towers, a kitchen that barely qualified as functional, but now it felt different. Lived in, somehow.
Hoseok tilted his head back against the wall, eyes drifting around the room. “We actually did it.”
Yoongi didn’t answer right away. Instead, he looked at the mess, at the space they would have to figure out together, at the quiet that had finally replaced all the noise.
“Yeah,” he said softly. “We did.”
Hoseok nudged his knee lightly with his own. “Scary?”
“Very.” It was definitely scary for him in more than one way, but he didn’t show it, Atleast, he hoped it wouldn't show. But why would he even have anything to be scared of? Or like even be anxious? Right, Yoongi?
“Good,” Hoseok grinned. “Means it’s real.”
Yoongi let out a small breath that almost sounded like a laugh. Outside, somewhere down the hallway, footsteps and banter had faded completely. And inside the apartment, for the first time in the day, it was just the two of them. Just like it had been like always, just like he wanted it to be always.
⏺ REC ⏺
“Hoba, how does instant ramen sound for dinner?” Yoongi called out from the kitchen, voice casual as if he wasn’t quietly trying to hold an entire new apartment, the future, teaching, and of course, Hoseok, together in his head at the same time.
From the bathroom came an immediate answer, bright and unbothered. “Sure, I’ll just go poop real quick you can just set it for boiling.”
Yoongi paused for a beat, staring at nothing in particular. “Have a nice one,” he said, flatly, sarcasm doing absolutely nothing to hide the fondness he has for his very own dumbass. His dumbass really makes living a lot more easier.
“Thanks, hyung!”
The door shut and brought Yoongi back to reality.
The apartment settled into silence—half unpacked boxes along the walls, the faint smell of cardboard and new beginnings, and the sound of water beginning to heat. It still didn’t fully feel like theirs yet, but it was getting there in uneven pieces.
Yoongi exhaled, then crouched down near his bag, fingers digging through it without much urgency at first. Somewhere between folded clothes and random clutter, his hand hit something familiar. The camcorder.
Then something else.
A small ring box which had kept him nervous the whole day. It could even be defined as the sole thing which was the weird warm thing lingering in his chest the whole time packing. Again, which was definitely not anxiety. Right, Yoongi? What does he even have to be anxious for?
“I hope this thing still works or I will kill Seokjin hyung,” he muttered to himself under his breath. Yes Yoongi, that was a completely normal thing to say while standing in a half-finished kitchen. Without thinking too long, because if he did think for too long, he would not be able to do it at all, he shoved the box into his sweatpants pocket.
Then he turned the camcorder on. The red light blinked at him, it felt weird. Yoongi stared back at it for a second, then leaned closer.
“Hello this is Min Yoongi,” he started. “I am recording from the past I am your father and I am scared out of my fucking ass—” He stopped, frowned at himself immediately.
“No. That is, for sure, not the correct way to talk to my future offsprings.”
He adjusted the angle, lowering it so the frame caught the counter and the two bowls of ramen accompanied with chopsticks now sitting there, steam rising in hope that nothing too much in the world was about to change.
“Okay. Hello children,” he tried again, quieter. “Your father is barely functioning. He thinks.”
He squinted at it, and if it could it would send a squint back, but sadly for you and me and the camera and happily for Yoongi, that is yet to be possible. He added under his breath, “I am scared out of my boots or wits or whatever.”
From behind him, Hoseok walked in like he had just announced the most important event of his day, maybe his life even. “Yoongi I just took the best shit of my life—oh what are you doing?”
He immediately dropped down next to Yoongi, for him the floor was the only appropriate place to be. Next to him, just there for forever.
Yoongi didn’t even fully look at him to reply back. “I was recording to show our children in the future.”
Hoseok lit up instantly. “Awie, that's so cute, you’re so cute.”
Then, without missing a beat. If this were in slow motion, you could probably pinpoint the exact second the horrible idea lit up in Hoseok’s head. Don’t mind him, he just loves teasing his boyfriend. It is hoped that is to be changed. Not the love for teasing, of course not, but the title. Wait, huh?!
“Wait, is this your way of telling me you’re pregnant and getting my reaction I saw that trend online but I really thought I was wearing a condom last time—”
He stopped himself mid-sentence to catch Yoongi’s reaction.
“Okay was that too far, sorry?” He was not actually sorry but still continued, now truthfully, “And what's wrong with our children knowing that their dad has had a great digestive system, since forever?”
Yoongi just stared at him for a moment. Not reacting. Not teasing back. Just still. Hoseok blinked trying to communicate in Morse code, which he didn’t even know. But won’t hurt to try, correct?
“Hyung?” Hoseok’s usual loud tone was a lot quieter and softer now. How one would talk to a scared kitten. This isn’t like Yoongi at all. Leaving Hoseok to wonder if he said anything wrong though banter was usual in their conversations it's still appalling to see his boyfriend so shut down. A thought creeps up in his mind to tell him to abort the plan tonight.
Yoongi’s voice came out no louder than a whisper. “You would want to have children with me, someday in the future?"
The camcorder kept recording.
Hoseok froze for barely half a second, then smiled, the answer had been sitting in him the whole time. “Yeah,” he said simply. “Of course I do. Why wouldn’t I?” He picked up his chopsticks to remind the environment, and the atmosphere, and the cardboard boxes around them that maybe they were still just starting to eat dinner.
Yoongi swallowed down the bile flavoured anxiety in his oesophagus. Wait, so are we finally calling this anxiety now? Thank you, Mr.Min. This is great progress. But what does Yoongi even have to be anxious for? Right, let me tell you. Yoongi had planned to propose to his boyfriend of ten years. Despite constant reassurances from Namjoon and Seokjin which sounded similar to “he loves you as much as you do, if not more. Why would he, in his right mind, ever say no?” Yoongi is still anxious as hell.
So, yeah, that is what Yoongi has to be anxious for.
“Wait before you begin I want to put something out in the universe.” Oh no! That came out really really more serious than he had planned in his head, though this was a pretty serious topic.
Hoseok’s hand and chopsticks stop in air, mid motion. “Are you constipated? I knew it, you did look kind of off the whole day, I really did not wanna bring it up in front of the boys. Don’t worry Yoongi hyungie though we have medicines somewhere here in one of these boxes—”
“Baby,” Yoongi cut in immediately, softer but firm, his hands taking out the chopsticks out of Hoseok’s. “Quiet. Please give me a sec.”
Hoseok looked at him properly now with his stupid stupid doe eyes which make you want to spill your guts out to him and then cry in his arms. Yoongi dared to look into them, a big mistake. He tried to hide that by rubbing the back of his neck once, twice, thrice, he was trying to gain some strength from the future him. To help him find the version of himself, in himself, that knew how to do this without falling apart into the lap of the person who had the stupid doe eyes.
“I swear I had a whole speech prepared but I kind of forgot it,” he admitted, exhaling a short laugh which barely sounded like one, but alright Yoongi, you do you. “So this is probably going to sound so so so goddamn messy.”
He reached into his pocket with an inhale. Pulled out the box. Opened it. Presented it in front of Hoseok, who froze instantly.
Yoongi didn’t even have it in him to pause and make it dramatic. It was almost if he stopped, he wouldn’t be able to continue at all.
“I think it might even be better this way,” he rambled on, voice already shaking slightly. “Because if I actually tried to say it properly I’d overthink it and I don’t want that, although I am doing that already.”
He exhaled, looking down at the ring to remind himself why he is even putting himself through all this.
“You are my first everything. First love. First kiss. First time having someone up my ass, being up someone’s, having someone in my mouth and vice versa and all of the firsts that are yet to come.”
He continued himself quickly, quieter but more honest, if that were even possible.
“For the first time I felt loved.”
A beat, an eon passes.
“I can not think of you as something that just happens and then becomes something I learn to live with missing. I can not see myself without you at all.”
Yoongi barely finished, “I’d really want you to be my last everything too.”
Silence settled rather eerily loud in his ears now. Yoongi let out a breath, no, almost two, he had just said something that couldn’t be taken back. He wouldn’t even want to. Though Hoseok’s lack of reaction made him second guess his very own felt words.
“You can even think of this as a promise ring,” he added, quieter. To lessen damage, if there were any done.
“What the fuck.”
Yoongi blinked up. “Hoba—” He began with no concrete idea on how to carry on.
“What the fuck. No. No way. No way.” Hoseok stood up so fast the moment broke entirely, everything feeling too horribly real. “This cannot be happening right now, no way, no way—” His voice is now the one rambly. Unlike Yoongi’s quiet and scared, his is thunderous and all over the place.
And then he just left the room. Maybe even his life. This is not how Yoongi wants them to end. Hell, he doesn't ever want them to end, hence the proposing and all. He stayed frozen, still looking at the ring box out on the empty floor, in between their bowls, in trust that the scene might rewind itself if he didn’t move.
“Hoba, I’m so sorry I undoubtedly moved too fast, I fucked up real bad,” he muttered the last bit rather quietly. “We can take it slow. Please don’t leave. We, we can make it work, ple-”
From the other room came, “Shut the fuck up, shut up, shut up.”
Yoongi tried his best to stay silent, he really did, but he couldn't help but sniffle a little. Though, the sniffles aren’t noisy enough to drown down the rummaging sounds from the room. Maybe Hoseok is packing his stuff to leave? That can’t be it though, right? This better be a goddamn dream. Ten fucking yea-
Hoseok came back. Now he had a ring box shaped box too in his hands. He stopped right next to Yoongi, looking down at him. Yoongi looked at him back offering his best attempt at not to break down.
Silence again, heavier, uglier this time. Hoseok probably pities Yoo-
Hoseok let out a breath, almost disbelieving. “No goddamn way you beat me to it,” he said.
Yoongi blinked. “Huh?!”
Hoseok plopped down next to him, pushing the ramen bowls aside without caring if they survived. (Spoiler Alert: they did survive, haphazardously so) “I was going to propose tonight too,” he said. “I was just waiting for dinner to end.”
Hoseok’s voice feels sadder and softer than any time ever before. “I was just going to do it after.” A prayer out in the world, really, to whoever is listening, or even if no one is.
He looked at Yoongi properly now, something cracking into something mushier.
“Fuck.” Another prayer as Hoseok pulled Yoongi in his lap, who let himself be pulled. Mind hazy, no words make any sense. His arms and legs and head find their usual places around Hoseok’s body, they fit as perfect puzzle pieces. There was no hesitation left anymore.
“Of course I’ll marry you,” Hoseok’s voice quivered slightly as his hand flew to his hair ruffling life back into his Yoongi. “You idiot.”
Yoongi exhaled against his shoulder, still clutching onto his boyfriend’s (fiancé’s) T-shirt as he felt a tear or two on his own neck.
“Why the fuck are you crying now?” he murmured with no real bite, per se.
Hoseok had no reply for him other than to hold him tighter. So he does that. “Because you are, you dork.” He barely managed to sniffle out.
The camcorder kept recording. The ramen stayed untouched. The ring boxes were forgotten somewhere between laughter and the shock effect, somewhere between shaking hands and unsteady breaths that finally started to slow.
And yet neither of them moved to fix any of it. Because there was nothing to be fixed.
Yoongi was still there, curled into Hoseok like he had always belonged there. Because of fucking course, if there were any place he truly belonged to, this would be it. Hoseok’s arms stayed around him a little tighter than necessary, letting go might turn this back into a dream they have both had.
For a few minutes that felt like hours, neither of them had to speak. A sniffle or a giggle or an incoherent mixture of both and neither noises here and there but no words. There didn’t need to be anything else added to this feeling.
Just the quiet after everything too loud finally settled.
Just the feeling of something ending and not feeling like an ending at all, almost as if it were a beginning of some sort.
This moment was all theirs, entirely theirs. The air around them had surely shifted, unexpected from a ten year relationship but that is just Yoongi and Hoseok for you and me! The change is not petrifying but rather new, comforting still somehow, and exciting for sure.
And the apartment full of half opened boxes everywhere, beginnings, most things still not in their designated places, sat around them. It was finally complete in the only way that had ever ever mattered.
For the first time of many many times to come, it didn’t feel empty. It felt completely full.
⏺ REC ⏺
The rings were exchanged between sloppy kisses and tears. The ramen was cold and now eaten, it had transformed into the kind of meal that no longer mattered except for the fact that it had been shared, a comfort meal, if you will. The camcorder, which had been forgotten in the chaos of everything that came after it, was now turned off and set aside with a mutual decision to deal with it later, if they even remembered, or cared enough to. Maybe some editing could fix the hour(s) long recording, but honestly, neither of them cared about that anymore. They could only care about the person in their arms, like it always had been, like it always will be.
The apartment was still only half-settled. Nothing and everything had changed. Boxes lingering in corners were no longer haunting and daunting. A trashy, overly dramatic and cliche K-drama played quietly on the laptop placed on the coffee table, its flickering light the only real source of brightness in the living room. Neither of them was watching it anymore. Neither of them had been for a while.
It was quiet in the way that felt full instead of empty. Both figuratively and physically too, apparently, as Yoongi had cooked too much ramen for just two people having dinner.
Hoseok and Yoongi were both lying on the couch now, tangled into each other in a way that made sense to no one except for themselves. Yoongi had shifted until he was on top of Hoseok, of course that was the only position for him to exist in right now. Why wouldn’t it be? It was unceremoniously comfortable, as gravity and he, himself, Min Yoongi had simply decided this was where he belonged. Hoseok couldn’t help but agree silently and melt into it.
They stayed like that for a while, just breathing and existing in each other’s presence. Until Hoseok had decided to end the silence first, voice amused and sweet. “You technically never proposed to me.”
Yoongi didn’t even feel like moving much, so he didn't. Only mumbled into the side of his neck. “So if you had actually let me finish.”
“I still said yes, though,” Hoseok replied, it was as obvious as the sky being blue. “As your cheesy ass decided to propose on moving day.”
Yoongi shifted slightly, propping himself up just enough to rest his chin on Hoseok’s chest so he could look at him properly. His eyes were slow, heavy-lidded, but still very much present and full of love, adoration, and all the stupid poetic words. “Didn’t you plan to do the same?” he muttered. “Just like half an hour lat—”
Hoseok cut him off by kissing him immediately, that was an unquestionably much better use of their time.
When they pulled apart, Yoongi looked mildly offended however not enough to actually complain. Instead, his thoughts drifted somewhere completely unrelated. “Should I wear glasses to look serious?” he asked, tone entirely way too serious for the question.
Hoseok’s fingers were already in his hair, carding through the strands slowly. “You could also dye these bad boys grey to look older than the principal herself.”
“Go fuck yourself.”
“No, do it yourself, you coward.”
And then they were kissing again, the conversation had simply looped back into itself.
A little while later, because time didn’t really feel linear anymore, nor did it have to, honestly. Yoongi spoke again, softer and almost lyrical this time. “So what do we tell the school about the relationship you and I have?”
Hoseok let out a small laugh, still playing with his hair. “Let’s pretend we’re business partners. We don’t even know each other. Who are you, again? Imagine how scandalous it is for hormonal high schoolers to think that their science and math teachers are married.”
No remarks, no snarks, no reply.
“Wait, Yoongi don’t fall asleep on me here, let’s go inside.”
Yoongi didn’t respond immediately. His voice came out slurry, muffled, already more than halfway gone. “Please, it’s so comfy here.”
Hoseok sighed in annoyance, though he wasn’t really annoyed. “Nope. Get up. I promise the bed is comfier, baby.”
There was a long beat where neither of them moved, like a negotiation happening without any words whatsoever. Then, eventually, they did move, slowly but surely. And somewhere between half-asleep chuckles and unhurried shuffling into the bedroom, the rest of the world faded out of them again.
Tangled into each other, they fell asleep now properly. This was home now. Yoongi’s and Hoseok’s. For forever.
⏺ REC ⏺
Morning arrived slowly through thin curtains of their brand new and still half unpacked boxes, pale sunlight spilling across the bedroom in uneven strips that felt too familiar despite the fact they were seen for the very first time. The apartment still looked unfamiliarly fresh in daylight, softer somehow, less like a place they had moved into yesterday and more like somewhere they had sluggishly started belonging to.
Yoongi was happily asleep through most of it.
At least until he felt kisses being peppered all over his face with absolutely no sense of restraint whatsoever. He groaned out loud immediately, nose scrunching up as he tried (Keyword: tried) to bury himself deeper into the pillow, but the sweet assault only continued. Forehead, cheek, nose, jaw, Hoseok seemed determined to cover every inch possible.
“What,” Yoongi grumbled finally, voice rough with sleep. “What.”
Hoseok was hovering over him now, practically straddling his lap with entirely too much energy for someone who had also gone to sleep at an ungodly hour. “What, what?” he repeated dramatically before leaning down to kiss the corner of Yoongi’s mouth again. “Can’t I kiss my husband now? This is tyranny.”
And that silly little comment, stupidly enough, had managed to drag the biggest, sleepiest gummiest smile out of Yoongi. The kind Hoseok only got to see. He really wouldn’t have it any other way, honestly.
Still, it looked as if apparently the attack was not enough motivation to actually wake up properly. Yoongi turned over immediately after, trying to hide his face back into the blankets with a grumbled noise of protest, but Hoseok only followed him shamelessly, still pressing lazy kisses wherever he could reach.
Then suddenly came, grabby hands. “Give me your hand, husband.”
Yoongi, half awake and full confused, obediently shoved one out from under the blanket anyway. “Huh.”
“I just realized,” Hoseok said while untangling Yoongi’s fingers carefully, “we forgot to update the group chat.”
Yoongi was deeply unimpressed and decided to voice it out in a noise that sounded suspiciously close to suffering.
Before he could even object properly, Hoseok hooked their pinkies together and quickly snapped a picture with his phone. Their rings caught the morning light just enough to glint in the photo.
“There,” Hoseok announced proudly, flashing his stupid stupid heart shaped smile.
“Oh my god,” Yoongi muttered into the pillow. “Who even cares. Come back to sleep.”
That, seemingly so, was all the invitation Hoseok needed. As if it were a chain reaction of some sort, he immediately collapsed back onto Yoongi with zero hesitation, just like he had last night on the couch, all warm limbs and loose laughter, nearly knocking the air out of him.
“Are you sure,” Hoseok asked, voice lower now and hands roaming all over him, “you can go back to sleep this hard?”
“You’re unbelievable in the morning,” Yoongi muttered, though the words lost most of their bite when he felt Hoseok’s lips on his neck.
Hoseok immediately caught the reaction, grin turning downright dangerous. “Oh, so now you’re awake.”
“Don’t be annoying.”
“I’m not doing anything.”
“You know exactly what you’re doing.”
“Yeah, maybe I do, what are you going to do about that?” Hoseok admitted easily before letting Yoongi reply to anything by kissing him again, sloppier and more heated this time. All sleepy warmth and lingering pressure somewhere dissipating. Yoongi’s hands instinctively found their spot in the back of his shirt before he could pull away, now more awake than ever, he wanted him closer.
Somewhere near the edge of the bed, the phone slipped further into the blankets, entirely forgotten. Just like the rest of the world.
The group chat could wait on the engagement announcement for an hour or so.
⏺ REC ⏺
The apartment air from last night shifted from cardboard to smell faintly of coffee and burnt butter by the time Yoongi stepped into the kitchen. Not enough to ruin breakfast, probably, more like hopefully, just enough to make it obvious Hoseok had gotten distracted at least once while cooking.
Morning sunlight spilled lazily through the windows now, illuminating unpacked boxes stacked near the walls, mismatched utensils, and the ridiculous amount of bubble wrap neither of them had willingly touched since yesterday.
Hoseok stood in the middle of it all in loose sweatpants and one of Yoongi’s old shirts, humming some stupid pop song quietly to himself while flipping toast around with entirely too much confidence for someone who almost burned eggs five minutes ago. How does Yoongi know? Oh, the air told the tale which words could never.
Fresh from the shower, hair still damp at the ends, Yoongi didn’t even bother announcing himself before walking up behind him and wrapping both arms around his waist. Hoseok leaned back into him immediately on instinct, as if it were his second nature. It perhaps was his second nature for all that we know.
“You didn’t even bother to invite me to shower with you,” he complained after a moment, his voice theatrically offended.
Yoongi pressed his face against the back of his shoulder. “I didn’t want to get pounced on again.”
“Oh my god,” Hoseok gasped. “That has happened in this apartment like one time.”
“It was literally this morning.”
“And?”
Yoongi could only snort softly in response, tightening his arms around him a little more as Hoseok let out a laugh shaped sigh under his breath. For a while after that, neither of them said much. The stove crackled quietly beneath the pan while Hoseok absentmindedly swayed them side to side, still trapped in Yoongi’s back hug as he attempted to finish breakfast without moving around them too much.
It was disgustingly domestic.
Eventually Hoseok sighed dramatically, glancing toward the plates waiting near the counter. “Yoongi.”
“Mhm.”
“I have to set the food on the table.”
“Alright, and?”
“Baby.”
“No.”
Hoseok’s voice mocked Yoongi’s from their bed shenanigans earlier. “You are unbelievable in the morning.”
“I’m choosing to ignore that statement.”
“Unfortunately you’re still physically attached to me.”
Still, it took another full minute or maybe even a couple before Yoongi finally let him go, doing it with a few kisses pressed gently on his shoulder and the reluctance of someone letting go of their husband for war.
They settled at the tiny dining table afterward with coffee, toast, and eggs that were slightly overcooked but still edible. Sunlight pooled warmly around them and across the tabletop while the rest of the apartment still remained half unpacked around them. Boxes scattered everywhere in a way that should have made the place feel temporary.
The rings adorned their fingers didn’t, though, they made everything feel permanent. Not particularly overwhelmingly so, but rather comfortingly so.
Hoseok was halfway through his coffee when he went, “Actually, yesterday was not the best shit of my life.”
Yoongi looked up slowly from buttering his toast. “Is this really the topic you want to discuss over breakfast? Your feces schedule?”
“I’m being deadass,” Hoseok defended himself quickly. “I was nervous as hell. I needed some stupid filler line so I could calm myself down before proposing after dinner.”
Yoongi blinked at him once before immediately starting to laugh. “You are unbelievable.”
“And you ruined it,” Hoseok continued accusingly, pointing his fork toward him. “I had a whole plan and you just fucked that up.”
Lovingly, admittedly, but still.
“Didn’t seem like you minded very much,” Yoongi mumbled into his coffee, trying and successfully failing to hide his affectionate smile.
“Of course I minded! My speech was incredible.”
“You still never told me the speech.”
“Now I can’t use it anymore.”
Yoongi shrugged lightly. “Use it at the wedding.”
Hoseok gave his best genuinely horrified face. “No. I have a different one planned for the wedding.”
That made Yoongi laugh even harder, shoulders shaking and gums out while Hoseok stared at him with pleasant fondness written, in cursive, all over his face.
A comfortable silence settled between them after that, broken only by the occasional clink of cutlery against plates and the distant noise of traffic somewhere outside the apartment windows.
Then Yoongi narrowed his eyes slightly. “Actually….” he started slowly, “let’s talk about how you woke me up for the fuckass engagement announcement photo and then didn’t even post it in the group chat.”
Hoseok visibly paused mid bite.
“After showering,” Yoongi resumed himself, “I was genuinely wondering why nobody had reacted yet. Turns out you didn’t post anything, yet.”
Hoseok pointed at him immediately. “You distracted me.”
Yoongi looked baffled out of his mind. “I distracted you?”
“Yes, you distracted me.”
“Could you, kind sir, explain how exactly I distracted you?”
Hoseok glared at him vapidly over the rim of his mug. “You know. With your morning wood thingy.”
Yoongi nearly choked on his coffee. “Oh my god,” he groaned, dragging a hand down his face. “It’s basic biology. Remind me what you’re going to teach again?”
“Science.”
“Tragic.”
Hoseok kicked his shin lightly under the table in retaliation.
Still muttering some bullshit under his breath, Yoongi reached for his mug again. Only for the silver band on his finger to catch the light suddenly. He paused himself mid movement, gaze lingering there for some moments longer than before. Unbelievably quieter, almost absentmindedly so, the question came, “How did you even pay for this?”
Hoseok glanced down at his own ring before shrugging one shoulder casually. “Well, I used the first cheque the school gave us for the apartment down payment. And the rest is on EMI. They’ll just cut part of it from my salary every month.”
Yoongi stared at him for a moment. Then another.
“No way,” he said finally, somewhere between disbelief and obviousness. “Baby, we literally thought of the same thing.”
Hoseok blinked. “Wait, seriously?”
“Yes seriously.”
For a second both of them just sat there staring at each other and then at the rings on their fingers with identical expressions of quiet surprise. Neither of them quite knew what to do with the fact that they had independently made the exact same stupidly serious decision.
Hoseok’s grin comes first.
“Wow,” he said proudly, gaze fixated on the ring on his hand. “Great choice you have.”
Yoongi sneered softly into his coffee. “Oh yeah, do I now?”
“Of course. I, too, have an excellent taste in rings.” Hoseok pointed at him confidently with his fork. “Apparently in men, too. Look at yourself.”
“That was an inside thought, Hoba. You are embarrassing me and my brand.” The tone of his words, however, did clash with the beam on his face.
“And yet you’re smiling.”
Yoongi immediately stopped smiling.
Unfortunately for him, Hoseok had already seen it.
After that the conversation drifted again naturally, bouncing between unpacking plans, or whether they desperately needed curtains before their neighbors saw too much stuff, or future school gossip plans, and, of course, how long they could realistically hide being engaged before one of them slipped up at work.
Probably less than a week.
At some point Yoongi stole one of Hoseok’s half eaten toast without drawing too much attention, or so he believed. Hoseok complained loudly something about how betrayal comes from the closest of people or bla bla bla. Yoongi ignored him completely. Their coffee went cold slowly beside them, but still it was finished, while the sunlight crept further across the table.
Turns out Yoongi had nothing to be anxious for, after all.
And right, the group chat remained forgotten.
Again.
⏺ REC ⏺
After approximately a hundred thousand kisses later and most of the unpacking finally done, the apartment had started looking less like a hazardous zone and more like somewhere two people actually lived.
Not neatly but you get the sentiment.
There were still boxes shoved near the hallway wall, hoodies abandoned over chair backs, and exactly one out of 23 spoons missing that neither of them could find anywhere. But the living space was unabashedly theirs now. Warm and lived in and still faintly smelling of the coffee from breakfast, hours ago.
By the evening both of them had completely abandoned any productive intentions. There really weren't any to begin with but okay. Hoseok was stretched across the couch underneath Yoongi, one hand lazily rubbing circles into his back while some random movie neither of them were paying attention to played quietly in the background. Sounds familiar enough, right? Yoongi lay half on top of him, face tucked into the crook of his neck while Hoseok absentmindedly played with the ends of his hair.
Now that Hoseok knew why Namjoon had wished Yoongi “good luck” yesterday morning with that suspiciously scared yet smug face, he had spent the last ten minutes bullying him about it.
“You told Namjoon?”
“I did not tell him actually,” Yoongi defended himself immediately, rather poorly, voice muffled against his shoulder. “He unfortunately has observational skills.”
“Traitor behavior honestly.”
“You still said yes.”
Hoseok grinned against his hair. “Unfortunate for me.”
Yoongi responded back by biting his shoulder very very lightly.
“OW—”
“You deserved that.”
“Violence in an engaged household already, is this the environment you see our little ones growing up in?” Hoseok clutched his imaginary pearls. “Heartbreaking.”
For a while after that they just stayed tangled together on the couch, talking lazily about absolutely nothing. Half-finished conversations melted into quiet chortles and random kisses while the evening sunlight slowly disappeared outside the windows.
Then suddenly Yoongi shifted slightly, reaching for his phone from somewhere between the couch cushions. “Hoba,” he announced seriously while opening the groupchat, “I’m bullshitting on the chat right now please back me up.”
Hoseok only hummed lethargically in acknowledgment from where his arms were wrapped around Yoongi’s waist.
The group chat read :

By the time the messages stopped flooding in, neither Yoongi nor Hoseok had cared to reply, not even once.
Hoseok was laughing too hard into Yoongi’s shoulder to type properly while Yoongi himself had fully abandoned the phone somewhere near the edge of the couch after Seokjin’s pinterest couple comment.
Somewhere inside the team kim seok jin ftw group, the chaos continued on without their presence. Jungkook was apparently fighting passionately for flower girl rights while Jimin and Taehyung demanded clearer ring pictures. Seokjin continued insisting he deserved financial compensation for ‘emotional damages’ and Namjoon called dibs for being both the officiant and their best man.
Curled up together beneath dim apartment lighting from the bustling buildings outside, Yoongi and Hoseok missed all of it entirely, almost willingly.
Their phones kept buzzing endlessly somewhere between the couch cushions and the mushy.
Neither of them moved to check. Neither of them had to. As neither of them wanted to.
Right now, the only thing that mattered was each other.
Just like it always had been.
Just like it always would be.
