Two years since I signed up.
Eighteen and insanely arrogant, wanting to do my part in life to get remembered. If those goddamn posters weren't so twisted and tricked me into the hell hole. I still remember when my mother kissing farewell and my little brother hugging me goodbye wanting me not to leave. Just if I listened.. God oh, I wish I stayed.
The stars Twinkled in the dark abyss in the sky above. I sat down on the dry, dirty mud, just waiting fir anything to happen. A few soldiers laying down a few meters away trying to catching any sign of sleep they could, it was hard to get any nowadays.
"Hey, Avery." Derek called out from next to me as he took me out of my daze.
"Oh! Uhh.. H-hey Derek, you uhm need anything?" I replied, slightly turning red from being caught nearly falling asleep.
Derek sighs, "Nope, just trying to get my mind off wanting to go home.." He murmured as he leaned his head against my shoulder and he chuckled as he looked up at my face, obviously finding amusement in my embarrassment.
"So.. I'm your escape from that I'm guessing?" I look away from his sweet gaze.
I look at Derek just smirking up at me slightly leaning in a bit closer, I turn a bit redder and looked past Derek so I won't embrass myself anymore and something caught my eye in the pitch, black darkness. A dark figure with a gun Approaching, approaching us. I tensed up not knowing what to do while Derek sat there oblivious to the danger that's rapidly approaching us, that's rising their gun up.
I snapped out of my haze and managed to say "H-hey Derek theres-"
I was too late.
BANG! The gunshot cut through the air like a knife and made it's place in Derek's head with a wet crack then made it's home in my arm. I hissed in pain through gritted teeth, "FUCKK.. Aghh D-derek.. a-are you..-"
My heart dropped as I realised the body slumped against me turning cold by the minute and I looked down at Derek's body, mostly his face, and saw the gunshot wound with blood dripping down his face, into his eyes turning it bright red. I didn't realise the tears forming in my eyes and rolling down my face.
"D-derek? No... Oh god no!" My voice cracked as my hands trembled and flew up to Derek to try and get him to wake up but It was too late.
I was too late to stop him dying..
I wake up in a hospital. I squint my eyes trying to get used to the blinding light bouncing off the pure white walls which was significantly different from the dull, black mud I was normally surrounded by. I look around for a sign of anyone, mainly Derek hoping he didn't die even though I knew deep down he did, but no one was around. I felt around with my right arm amd Immediately winced as pain shot through my arm and I grabbed where It hurt the most and felt the bloodied bandages wrapped around my arm. There was sound outside the door and I instantly looked at the door to see the nurse opening as a nurse walked in, surprised to see me awake and alert.
