Work Text:
A yellow Pikmin with a white bud sticking out of the top of its head wandered away from its colony. The others didn’t like it and its monster. It didn’t like that very much, its monster was its best and closest friend after all.
So it left, saying a bittersweet goodbye to its mother Onion. It was sure its siblings could take good care of their mother by themselves. They had made that point clear enough several times over.
In its travels it found many things, pictures, fruits, vegetables, strange sparkly objects. The world was much bigger than the small range by its mother it had stuck close to. It was both frightening and exhilarating with its monster by its side.
Giant structures led to strange contraptions and stranger murals. The yellow Pikmin was naturally curious and, while it could not understand, it felt a natural connection to the strange darkened spots on the thin woody box.
’Meguru’
It traced the odd lines and thought to itself, this is my name.
A weird thought but it was something that it had picked up from watching some interesting creatures that were nothing like what it had seen before in its small world. They called to each other by ‘names’, a sort of identification of uniqueness.
This particular yellow Pikmin had always been said to be something other than what it was. A name would be a great thing to have.
So those symbols became Meguru’s name.
—
“Wahhh!”
A peculiar sound reached Meguru’s large ears. A wailing that made it tilt its head to the side, trying to locate where it came from.
Its monster slunk through the towering grass stalks towards the noise. The golden sheen of Meguru’s monster was the only indication of where it moved, glistening in the beaming sunlight. Meguru followed, naturally.
They emerged into a clearing, peering around a tall green stalk and finding a small blue Pikmin running from a juvenile Bulborb. The Pikmin was just as peculiar looking as it sounded, two leaves sprouting off its head. Meguru had never seen such a phenomena occur before with its siblings.
As the young Bulborb snapped once more at the blue Pikmin, Meguru made its move. It rushed forward, latching onto the Bulborb’s back and bashing its head against the creature, its monster following and stabbing its golden tendrils into the Bulborb.
The Bulborb swiftly ran when faced with a creature much stronger than itself, survival instincts kicking in at just the right moment.
The blue Pikmin cowered away, shivering in a tight ball when Meguru and its monster scared off the Bulborb. It was cowardly enough to not face death and scraped by, barely holding onto its life.
Meguru approached the blue Pikmin reaching out a hand and patting it on the head. The Pikmin flinched before cautiously looking up at Meguru. Its monster had already retreated into the shade of the green blades so as to not startle the unique Pikmin.
Blue (as Meguru had dubbed it until further examination) boggled its eyes at Meguru, clearly not expecting the yellow Pikmin in place of the Bulborb. Blue’s mouth opened for it to squeak, the small slits on its face fluttering in tandem.
“Are you alright?” Meguru chittered at Blue. The two sprouts on Blue’s head swayed lightly in the breeze.
“…I’m okay.” Blue answered quietly, tittering at the yellow Pikmin.
Meguru grinned at Blue, “Great! I heard you and my monster led me here so it must be fate!”
Blue tilted its head, “Monster?”
“Yeah, my friend!” Meguru nodded.
“Alright…” Blue looked a little confused but ceased its questioning of Meguru, “Um…what do you mean by fate?”
“My monster brought me to you, so obviously we should be friends!” it affirmed.
“I see…” Blue stared into Meguru’s eyes, its gills rippling, letting Meguru vaguely see the fleshy blue of Blue’s insides, “I’ve never had a friend before.”
“Me neither, aside from my monster!” Meguru reached out a hand to help Blue up. The other Pikmin grabbed it and stood up, still holding onto Meguru’s hand after.
“I want to get stronger.” Blue suddenly said, “I should’ve been able to defend myself but you and your monster had to protect me instead.”
Meguru laughed joyously, its new friend’s easy acceptance of its monster made it feel giddy and warm inside, “Okay! We gotta figure out a name for you first though!”
“A name?” Blue tilted its head in confusion again, “What’s that?”
“It’s something to distinguish you from others, duh!” it yanked Blue closer, “My name is Meguru, for example!”
“Alright,” Blue’s eyes had a determined light to them, “We’ll find my name, then get stronger?”
“Yup!”
Meguru could already tell this was going to make things a lot more fun than before!
