Work Text:
You were just packing you work station for the night when you got the call. You were needed at the hospital. Your husband was in an accident. It was bad.
As you probably broke several laws, and nearly got yourself killed trying to get to the hospital they had told you, your mind was caught between two tracks. You wanted to kill the stupid birdbrain yourself. Who became a pro hero just to get hurt? He was supposed to be better than that! If anything happened to him, you'd make him pay. The other part of you just wanted him to be okay. You knew how hurt he could be when they wouldn't tell you, so how bad did it have to be for them to actually tell you about it?
You finally made it, rushing to the desk. "Hi, Keigo Takami? I'm his spouse." The man behind the desk, shifted slightly, opening his mouth to speak before two suits approached you.
"Come with us. We'll take you to him." You scowled at the pair but followed diligently. If it weren't for the HPSC, you'd not have to worry so much about your husband. They treated him more like an asset than a real human being. You'd heard everything they'd done to him in his youth. What they still did to him. It was rancid.
But you couldn't find any more strength to mentally curse the organization when you stopped at one of the windows, looking into a hospital room with attendants flitting around the space.
There he was, the great Hawks, looking a right state. He was laid out on his stomach, a mask over his face. Your eyes glazed over the cut and burnt skin the doctors were working on to find his massive wings broken and bent. Patches of feathers were missing. Not voluntarily, it seemed, as more blood and burns covered those as well.
"He didn't see it coming. He didn't have time to defend himself." One of the suits spoke, their tone a practiced sympathetic drone.
"Can I go in?" You hardly recognized your voice, so weak.
"I think when they are done cleaning him up. Since he didn't shed his wings, they will have to set them. If you'd like, there is a private wai-"
"No. I'll stay here. Thank you. You may go." You didn't take your eyes from Keigo anymore. You couldn't bear to look away, studying what the team was doing to him. The other two did not leave you. "Go! If there's some private waiting room, you can wait there. He is my husband, and I will watch over him! Get out!" With that, they finally moved on.
It felt like hours later a doctor came to you outside of the room, the rest of the team clearing the supplies out. Some passing nurse had brought you a chair, barely pulling your attention away long enough to sit, still watching through the window. "I have the initial report, if you have a moment to chat?" Finally you dragged your eyes from your husband's sleeping form.
"Can I go sit with him after?" The doctor nodded.
"Of course. This will just take a few minutes, then you can stay as long as you want. Usually we limit visiting hours, but you've already been granted special permission." With that assurance, they ran through the list of everything they knew, though they assured you they'd run more tests when he was awake again. It was harrowing. Broken bones, wounds that would likely scar, everything from first to third degree burns. They assumed a concussion as well.
But soon, you were free to go in. You sat by his side, stroking his hand and talking softly. He wasn't in an induced coma, but he certainly wasn't going to wake up any time soon. You slept by his side, waved off the offers of food, and sat up as long as you could before passing out next to him.
Eventually, you did need to get out, heading home just briefly to pack a bag to bring back. The entire time, you were contradicting everything you'd been hoping for, wishing for him to stay asleep now for just a little longer so you could be there when he woke up. For now, he hopefully would still be resting.
When you got back, you were quick to find Keigo's room again, returning to the seat at his side. You spoke to him of your short trip, and whatever else you could think of to share. He had started looking a bit better. Healers and medics had been coming in throughout the days, offering gentle check-ins with you as they worked.
"He's nearly ready, I think." An older healer had just finished a session, a bone specialist, they said. As you just watched them, not sure you heard right, they continued, "I have a feeling about these things, and I'm usually right." They pursed their lips, "I hope I'm right this time. I'll leave you both to it." As they left, you turned back to Keigo, sighing as you watched him.
"Are they gone?" The hoarse voice of your husband broke the ambient silence. Jolting up, you gaped at him. He blinked slowly, hand tightening around yours.
"Keigo!" You couldn't help the cry that burst from your throat. "You scared the shit out of me!"
"Well, I thought it would be awkward to say something in the middle of that conversation. And they might have already known I was awake, not gonna lie." He sounded worn, voice scratchy and tired. You moved to get him water, making sure to have a straw.
"Well, I'm so glad you're awake now. It sounds like you should be okay." You looked away as he drank slowly. "Which is amazing. I thought I was going to lose you for a bit there."
His laugh was forced, "Lose me? You could never. I have to stick around for you. I'll never leave you, little bird." He laugh-choked again, shuddering slightly. "Besides. Can't get rid of me that easy. I'm Hawks! I'm the best pro hero you've ever seen!"
You nudged his shoulder lightly. "You butt! If you were the best, I wouldn't have to visit you in the hospital! You're going to tell me everything that happened before I will even think about forgiving you for almost dying!"
He nodded slowly, barely perceptible. "As you wish."
