work out (for me)

Summary:

Yoongi accidentally creates a family with his next door neighbor.

Work Text:

Yoongi is in his head when he collides with someone on the crosswalk of his apartment complex. He has so much shit on his plate—securing funding for his research, interns from Seoul National at the lab that he has to practically babysit, his parents harassing him about finding a mate—it’s a lot for the alpha. So he isn't paying attention to his surroundings and crashes into another body.

“Shit, sorry,” Yoongi apologizes immediately, faced with a large cardboard box.

The box moves to reveal the face of an angry, pretty man. Omega, by his smell. The omega readjusts the box in his arms, huffing.

“Can you watch where you’re going, maybe?” The omega snaps. Sweat lines his brow, blond hair sticking to his forehead. He has pink lips that pout. Yoongi should be pissed at being talked to this way, but all he can see is how tired the pretty omega looks.

“Do you need help with that?” Yoongi asks.

“No,” he says, once again with an attitude.

Yoongi nods apprehensively. “Okay,” he says and begins walking towards his door, ready to fall in bed, dinner and shower be damned.

Not a few steps later, Yoongi hears a crash and a growl. Turning back, he sees the omega picking up items from the box he dropped. Without thinking, Yoongi rushes over to assist, ignoring the omega when he says, “I told you I didn't need help.”

Still, despite his protests, he lets Yoongi take the admittedly heavy box into his new apartment. A kid sits on the couch, Nintendo Switch in hand. The child, who can’t be much older than twelve, unpresented, looks up at the noise. He heavily favors the omega.

“So you ended up needing help,” the kid says, an attitude identical to the omega. “I knew you would.”

The omega purses his lips. “I’d appreciate it if you’d watch your tone.”

Shrugging, the child turns back to his game. Yoongi goes back out, following the blond to his moving truck, even though he didn’t ask, he doesn’t protest either, simply leading the way silently.

“Your brother looks just like you,” Yoongi says, making conversation, trying to get this pretty omega to talk to him.

“That’s my kid,” the omega corrects. Yoongi can’t hold back his shocked expression. He looks younger than Yoongi, there’s no way he has a teenager.

“Are you gonna judge me now?” he asks when Yoongi just gapes. “Most people do, especially alphas.”

“No, no,” Yoongi is quick to answer. “I was—you just look too young to have kids, that’s all.”

“I’m thirty,” he snaps.

They grab a TV, carefully carrying it up the stairs, Yoongi getting a glimpse of his annoyed face behind where the TV is held between them. His neck is bare of a mating mark, honeyed and smooth. Scent of citrus, an undertone of spice. Yoongi is undoubtedly attracted, but the other is so clearly not in the same boat.

He’s out of Yoongi’s league anyway.

“I think your attitude is rubbing off on your son,” Yoongi decides to say, which makes the omega angry. His face scrunches up, brown eyes roll.

“I’m trying to work on that with him,”

“And yourself, too?” Yoongi jokes, which doesn’t go over well with the omega, who once again rolls his eyes. If it wouldn’t make him sound like an old man, Yoongi would comment how his face would get stuck like that.

That ends Yoongi’s flirting attempts, and he spends two more hours lugging items up and down the steep stairs of the complex. When Yoongi brings up a guitar in the last load, the kid grabs for it quickly, strumming a tuneless song.

“You play?” Yoongi asks, though it’s clear he doesn’t.

He shrugs. “I’m trying to learn, but we can’t afford lessons right now.”

Yoongi turns to the omega, who looks thoroughly embarrassed at his child exposing their financial status to a stranger.

“Well, I’ve been playing for years, I can teach you,” Yoongi is sure to ask in the omega’s direction, “if that’s okay with you.”

Why Yoongi is offering, he doesn’t know. He’s not a teacher, not good at that type of thing at all, though these days it feels like teaching is all he does with his over-eager interns. The kid looks to his dad with hopeful puppy eyes, but all the omega does is lead Yoongi to the door with a, “It’s getting late.”

Yoongi steps out the door, standing awkwardly, wondering if he should ask for the omega’s number, but before he can get his shit together, the omega is dismissing him.

“Thanks for your help,” he gives a little smile, which almost makes Yoongi’s nervous system short-circuit.

“If you need anything, I’m over there,” Yoongi points to his apartment across the crosswalk. Without responding, the omega shuts the door in his face.

“I’m Yoongi, by the way!” he calls from behind the door of rejection, cringing at his own behavior.

Yoongi ends up doing the guitar lessons. He isn’t the one who pursues it. The omega, Jimin, knocks on Yoongi’s door one Sunday, says Hyunmin—the kid’s name—won’t leave him alone about it, offers to pay Yoongi an amount so low there’d be no point in taking it even if Yoongi gave a fuck about that. There aren’t any more flirting attempts, Jimin is obviously not interested. He always gives Yoongi sneering glances while he eavesdrops on their lessons from the kitchen, usually cooking while he watches. He never asks if Yoongi wants to stay for dinner.

Yet, despite Jimin's blatant dislike for Yoongi, he still allows him to come over every Sunday without complaint, and says nothing when Hyunmin waves at Yoongi from across the complex if they happen to run into each other. So Yoongi keeps a friendly distance, nurturing Hyunmin’s gift. The kid is talented and a fast learner. Yoongi wants to increase the lessons to twice a week, but with Jimin being an emergency room nurse, he only gets one day off—no exceptions. During the week Hyunmin has hagwon until the night, and Saturday he spends with his uncle Taehyung, all of this coming from the kid himself. He talks a lot, telling Yoongi about everything from school to hobbies to movies. His friends, grandparents back in Busan who come up twice a year: on Chuseok, which falls around his birthday, and lunar new year.

Yoongi can admit he's getting a little attached to the kid, but it's not a big deal. If he reminds Yoongi of one of his middle school friends? That's fine. He's only human, he can't hate the kid or be indifferent. Yoongi is just a hyung (really, an uncle, but Hyunmin is adamant on using hyung) who knows stuff and is a guy that's not his dad, so he's automatically cool in Hyunmin’s eyes without having to do much.

Yoongi is heading to his car to go to the lab. He always passes Jimin’s parking spot on the way. Usually, the omega is gone by now, dropping Hyunmin off at the train station before he gets to work. Today Yoongi finds him standing over the hood of his car, hands on his hips, looking confused.

“You're late,” Yoongi says sarcastically, mostly to see Jimin roll his eyes, as he always does.

It works.

“I-it won't go,” he pouts angrily. “Hyunmin had to walk to the train station this morning.”

“And staring at its insides is gonna help you figure out why?”

He pouts harder. “No. I consulted YouTube, but all the videos are in English. I guess that's what I get for buying an American car.”

“Should've stuck with Hyundai,” Yoongi steps forward. “I can look at it.”

Jimin scoffs. "No way a scientist just randomly knows about cars. That's so annoyingly alpha of you,”

Yoongi leans over the car, inspecting. The problem is glaring, it takes less than a minute to spot it.

“Unironically, my mom used to make me do alpha activities in hopes that I'd be one. I, uh, don't know if it helped my presentation, but now I know random shit, like carpentry, and the fact that your power steering hose has a hole in it. It needs fluid. When you tried to back out of the spot your wheel wouldn't turn.”

It'll make him late to work if he does this, but. He's the lead scientist, he can be late. “I can go up the street and get some fluid and a patch. It's a temporary fix, you'll need to get the hose replaced at some point.”

He can predict Jimin's next move with ease.

“No, I can do it. It's fine,” he insists. Yoongi is already walking to his car.

“Be back in ten,” Yoongi ignores Jimin's insistence.

Later at the lab, he smiles even as the interns fuck up his experiment for the third time, because Jimin wasn't completely standoffish this morning. He won't look too far into it, he can't. If they can at least be friendly for Hyunmin’s sake, that’s all Yoongi can ask for.

“So, so sorry, Min-ssi,” Minju says, blinking her eyelashes up at Yoongi. She has a crush—Yoongi isn't so naïve as to not notice. She tucks her hair behind her ears, which is supposed to be tied back—he’ll scold her later about it—while cleaning up the spilled chemicals with a sheepish smile.

“No problem,” Yoongi would typically be a little harsher, yet he finds himself being soft. “Why don't we let Moka try it again this time? If she fails, I'll show you the correct way so we can move forward.”

“You won't put it in our report, right?” Minju asks, voice and scent turning sweet. Yoongi steps back.

He's supposed to turn in monthly reports on the two omegas’ behavior, learning, work ethic. Failed experiments could be detrimental to it.

“Of course not,” he agrees, cringing a bit when it makes the girls giggle. He'd hate to give Minju the wrong idea. While, yes, she's pretty, she's—well, she's only eighteen, far too young, too immature, too green.

At the end of their shift, when Minju enters Yoongi's office as he's doing paperwork to personally wish him a good night, he fears he has.

Hyunmin has already progressed to playing songs in full. He loves IU, aims to learn all her ballads on acoustic, and it's great, but Yoongi still has to teach him the classics, much to his dismay.

“This one is so hard,” Hyunmin complains, pouting, eerily similar to Jimin.

“If you can do Never Going Back Again you can do anything. It's a staple,” then adds, “and Classic Gas is harder, by the way, so it will get worse.”

Jimin lurks, sparing glances while he stands over a pot of kimchi jjigae, perfect for the slowly chilling fall weather. Yoongi is tempted more than ever to ask if he can stay for dinner.

As always, after an hour, Jimin tells Hyunmin, “Go wash up so we can eat.”

He disappears down the hallway, and Jimin approaches Yoongi as he walks to Jimin's messy shoe rack. He briefly thinks that Jimin might, for the first time, ask him to stick around.

“Hyung, I'm gonna have to cancel next Sunday,”

Well, there goes that delusion.

“I had to switch shifts so I can be off Saturday instead for Hyunmin’s birthday party. Thirteen is a big deal.”

Yoongi nods in understanding. He didn't know Hyunmin’s birthday was coming up.

“He’d like it if you’d come, if you can,” Jimin adds, fiddling with the paws his oversized sweater creates. “It’ll be a gaming theme.”

“Okay. I’ll bring my PS5,” Hyunmin still has the older model. He’s been telling Yoongi how much he wants the newest one. If Yoongi didn't think Jimin would murder him, he would buy Hyunmin one as a present.

“See you then,” it’s a dismissal, one that Yoongi accepts with a smile.

Maybe next time.

One of two things has happened. First possibility: Jimin didn’t properly communicate what “gaming theme” means. Second possibility: Yoongi misunderstood what “gaming theme” means. While yes, he, like others, bought gaming consoles to play, mostly everyone else also dresses up as game characters. Hyunmin is in Ash Ketchum cosplay. Even Jimin participates, dressed like the nurse who heals Pokémon.

Yoongi is in khakis and a plain shirt with a cardigan. He has his glasses on, too lazy to put in his contacts.

Hyunmin greets Yoongi with a hug and a big smile after Jimin has taken his console for the kids to play with and put his gift for Hyunmin in the corner with the other presents stacked up messily in the living room corner. Hyunmin is nearly as tall as Yoongi, which makes the alpha wonder where he gets it from, because it sure isn’t from Jimin.

"You look like a college professor," Hyunmin jokes. Yoongi examines his outfit again, laughing.

"I didn't get the memo,"

Hyunmin seems unbothered, leaving soon after to play with his friends. Yoongi ends up with a plate of barbecue and banchan, being introduced to the only other adult at the party.

"This is Taehyung,” Jimin gestures to a tall, dark, and handsome omega. "I think you've already heard a bit about him from Hyunmin.”

Yes, the uncle who isn't really an uncle, just a close friend of Jimin’s.

"Hyunmin talks about you constantly, " Taehyung says. A boxy grin begins to line his face. “And, well, maybe—"

"Right, Hyunnie really likes you," Jimin cuts him off, scent spiking slightly.

"Hyunmin told me you're a scientist with your own research lab," Taehyung starts. Yoongi nods, wondering where he's going with this line of conversation.

"And he's always telling me how good of an alpha you are, yet I don't see a mating mark.”

"Uh.” Yoongi's jaw almost drops. It's one thing to think something like that, but to say it out loud to a stranger? This guy is bold.

“A handsome, career-driven, not-asshole alpha in his 30s is single?”

"You sound like my mother." Yoongi decides to respond with, to keep it light-hearted.

"Oh, I'm not trying to be invasive!" Taehyung says and Yoongi almost thinks he's backtracking. "I just know some omegas who are also unmated, handsome, career-driven and in their thirties," Taehyung unsubtly looks at Jimin.

So that's this guy's angle. Jimin is avoiding eye contact, head making friends with the floor. Yoongi wants to openly say that it wouldn't happen, that Jimin is not into Yoongi, which is represented by the way he's quiet but. That'd be at the expense of Yoongi’s own humiliation. He doesn’t like to be humiliated, especially in the presence of an omega like Jimin.

Luckily, he's saved by the bell when Hyunmin ropes Taehyung into playing Fortnite with the kids.

"Sorry about him,” Jimin whispers awkwardly. His cheeks are tinted pink. Yoongi can't tell if it's a real blush or makeup.

Probably makeup.

"No problem," Yoongi tries to be nonchalant.

A beat passes. Yelling teenagers fill the silence.

"Cake—want cake?" Jimin offers and the moment passes.

Eventually, Yoongi ends up playing on his own PS5. Hyunmin finds a game to download that Yoongi’s never heard of, but apparently popular. He doesn’t ask how much it costs.

Teenagers are more tiring than he would’ve thought. Maybe because the only experiences he has are his eighteen-year-old interns, who, yes, aren't easy, but even if they weren't there work would still be difficult. Then, there's Hyunmin alone, who usually leaves Yoongi in a livelier mood than he arrived. But Hyunmin, Yoongi has discovered through this party, is much calmer than other kids his age. Even though Yoongi is exhausted by the end, he stays to help Jimin clean. Hyunmin’s gone to sleep early, seemingly just as exhausted as Yoongi.

"Party was a success, I think," Yoongi is washing dishes, back turned to Jimin, who he can hear picking up trash.

"Really? You think so?" The watery, broken tone makes Yoongi turn his head. Jimin’s eyes are bloodshot, face twisted painfully.

"Jimin? What—”

"It's so hard," Jimin's voice breaks. "Doing this alone. I just wanna make him happy, but it's so hard.

Yoongi dries his hands, giving Jimin his undivided attention. There are only a few spoons left in the sink. They'll be fine.

"He is happy, Jimin. He is."

"With just us alone? Me and him?" Jimin sounds distant, doubtful.

Yoongi dares to ask: "Where is…”

"The alpha? He's never been here." Jimin is angrily shoving trash into the bin. “I understood at first. I was seventeen, he was eighteen, we were young, but he abandoned me.”

A few stray tears fall from Jimin's eyes and he quickly wipes them. Rotten citrus fills the kitchen, in which Yoongi, without even registering it at first, releases his own pheromones to comfort.

Yoongi leans his back against the countertop. Jimin follows. “I visited Hyunsong—um, Hyunnie's alpha dad, a little after he was born. Hyunsong was doing his military conscription. I came to his base with Hyunnie. He wouldn’t even look at his son, his own creation. He did that to me, I didn't do anything, yet I was left with the responsibility.”

The words make Yoongi’s scent spike, this time unpleasantly. The implication, he’s unsure if it's intentional.

"Did he take advantage of you?" Yoongi asks calmly, even though his alpha is crawling at his chest, begging to jump out and protect. From what exactly? Nearly fourteen years later? Jimin's trauma? Protect him from the hurt, the pain irradiating his scent?

"I don't—" Jimin sighs.

"He lives in Gangnam now. He's the CFO of a tech start-up, making billions of won while I worked twenty hours of overtime last week so I could give our child a decent party. I'll work twenty extra next week so I can pay rent and be able to put food on the table at the same time.”

Yoongi isn't the softest, most comforting, or nurturing person. He has his scent which manages to calm Jimin's. His words, which Jimin usually ignores in most circumstances. His touch, which Yoongi thinks might end in Jimin punching him if he goes in for a hug or hand-holding.

He goes for words. "Hyunmin is taken care of, healthy, happy. The hardest years are almost behind you. If you can get through his presentation, then,”

"Oh, god, not his presentation," Jimin laughs a real, wind-chiming laugh. “That's really the test, isn't it?”

"It was for my parents. I was a dick for years after mine."

Jimin throws a smile Yoongi’s way. "So you're thinking alpha then, for Hyunnie?"

Has Jimin not realized his barely teen child is taller than him? That alone should give Jimin his answer, but Yoongi decides to keep that thought to himself.

"Hopefully still a few years away, alpha.” Yoongi says. He's sure of it.

Jimin hums. "Before I met you I would've hated the idea of that, but you, hyung, you're a good alpha."

Blood rushes to Yoong's cheeks. "Really?”

The smile on Jimin's face is too real when he answers: "Really."

Being a scientist means being invited to boring conventions that Yoongi hates attending. He decides to invite the giggling interns for his own morbid entertainment. They'll talk through the entire thing, Yoongi can use them as a buffer for social situations. It's not entirely selfish though, it'll be a good learning opportunity for them.

They've taken the train to meet at Yoongi’s house, where he's driving the three of them. The giggling interns are wearing black dresses, appropriate, and he can't catch either of their scents in the cool fall wind, so they're wearing blockers. Yoongi didn't even have to tell them how to present themselves. They just know, he praises them for it only internally. He wouldn't want to make their heads big.

Minju and Moka settle in the backseat, sitting thigh to thigh despite the expansive space.

"Min-ssi, may we play music?" Minju asks with that coy smile she always wears.

"Yeah, there's Bluetooth," Yoongi affirms, carefully pulling out of the parking lot. For some reason, that makes the giggling interns giggle, then some K-pop group's song is blaring through the speakers.

The long drive is spent with various girl groups and the interns' quiet chatter in Yoongi's ears. Admittedly, some songs are catchy and Yoongi finds himself tapping his fingers on the steering wheel.

There isn't anything Yoongi can learn at this point, not from a useless conference that's really a glorified networking party. It isn't meant to be educational, but to earn connections, so Yoongi is content to stand back and let the giggling interns' charisma shine.

Yoongi doesn't need connections.

Donors come to these events. They come and donate what Yoongi makes in five years, which isn't a small number. Because they donate more than some people make in a lifetime, they get to talk. Drone on and on about boring shit that makes Yoongi want to pull out his hair, but since he's a mature adult, he can't do that. He needs to be calm, composed, and keep a blank stare on his face.

So he falls asleep.

Not fall asleep, per se, not completely, no. Yoongi simply dozes off for a few minutes, letting his eyes slip shut, just to rest them. The industrial LED lights make them hurt, and his head throbs on his left temple.

“Mi–Min-ssi,” someone whispers way too close to Yoongi’s ear.

His body jerks awake, and he blinks lazily at Minju, who’s staring at him like she's holding back a laugh.

“We wanna go talk. And I think some people are wanting to talk to you,” she says, voice still low, shy.

“‘Kay, okay,” Yoongi mumbles, blinking his eyes rapidly to clear them. He decided to wear contacts today. He should’ve gone with glasses.

Yoongi really could go back to sleep, but there’s no way he's letting the giggling interns on the loose alone. They're like cats. Sneaky.

Moka is a charming young lady. She flirts with the head of research at Yonsei and leaves the alpha blushing.

"Yoongi-ssi, I didn't know you had such talent under your wing!" Seoji croons.

The giggling interns giggle.

“You know, my mate is a manager at Lotte and she gave me all these tickets to give away," Seoji reaches into her blazer pocket.

And that's how the three of them end up with two tickets each to Lotte World.

Those giggles and smiles end them up with bags filled with little goodies from various institutions and companies. Enough skincare and makeup to last the rest of the year, gift cards, and merch.

“Lab coats with our names on them!” Moka puts it on over her black dress as they walk back to Yoongi’s car, stopping to do little poses that make Minju laugh while she snaps pictures.

"Min-ssi doesn't seem as impressed as us," Minju laughs.

Min-ssi’ has ten lab coats with his name on them. ‘Min-ssi’ is ready to collapse in his bed. He yawns, opening the back door for the two omegas before settling into the driver's seat, yawning again.

"Min-ssi is a dinosaur, Minju-ah,” the both of them laugh at that.

"Watch it," Yoongi grumbles with no grit behind it.

He drives off to the tune of Girls' Generation.

By the time Yoongi pulls into his parking spot, it's dark outside. He should've dropped them off near the train station.

"I can take you to the train station." Yoongi offers, voicing his thoughts, but the girls are already getting out of the car. He follows, trying not to let worry creep into his scent. The blockers he applied this morning are beginning to wear off.

"Oh, we're not going home, Min-ssi," Minju says. "We're gonna go out for a bit, so we'll just walk into the city."

They're going out. After an eight-hour convention, the giggling interns still have energy to go out. Yoongi thinks all that laughing, running their very extensive social batteries all day would eventually tire them out.

Yoongi is a dinosaur.

"I can walk you two," he insists.

That makes them laugh. Once again, Yoongi isn't sure what exactly is so funny. He's starting to think the two of them have some inside joke about him, something he's too prehistoric to catch onto.

"Hyung!" Yoongi hears a familiar voice call from across the complex. He turns around to see Jimin with Hyunmin in tow, who's waving and walking in Yoongi's direction. Jimin follows behind, looking dead on his feet.

Yoongi turns back to the giggling interns. They look curious, but don't ask about their new guests coming.

"Really, we'll be okay. Moka keeps a taser in her purse," Minju assures.

"If you're sure," Yoongi is still reluctant, but he lets it go. They probably go out every weekend, Yoongi knows he did when he was their age. "Just be careful."

Yoongi watches them until they're out of his line of vision, then turns his attention to Hyunmin, who’s engulfing him in a hug. Yoongi can smell a slight scent on him, different from Jimin's or Taehyung's, who he's presumably been with all day. Yoongi discards it for now, he can ask Jimin later.

“Hey, kid,” Yoongi greets, managing to muster up a smile. A real one, among the fake ones he’s had to sport all day.

“Uncle Taehyung took me to Noraebang today!” Hyunmin says, yawning immediately after. He leans in to whisper in Yoongi's ear, “He let me get a sip of soju. Don't tell my dad.”

Yoongi shakes his head. That man is something else.

“Go get ready for bed, Hyunnie. It's already past your bedtime,” Jimin speaks with all the authority of a strict parent that he really isn't. Hyunmin obeys without question, waving goodbye to Yoongi.

“You know he stays up late on his phone anyway, right?” Yoongi says when Hyunmin is out of earshot.

Jimin rolls his eyes. “I have to at least try to be a decent parent,”

Now that Yoongi is really looking at Jimin, he can see the deep, purple bags under his eyes, not able to be fully covered by makeup. A deep wrinkle sits between his eyebrows from the perpetual frown on his face, his artificially blond hair is sticking up in different directions. And yet, he's still beautiful.

“You look nice,” Jimin compliments. “Meeting or something?”

“Yeah, you do too. And it was a convention.”

Jimin looks down at himself. “I have on scrubs. With various fluids on them.”

His yellow scrubs seem to have mysterious stains on them, and they're wrinkled. Still, he looks nice. Better than Yoongi in his three-piece suit.

“You look great for having done a twelve-hour shift,”

Jimin hums noncommittally. “So, who were those girls? Looked—they seemed to be omegas?”

Yoongi blinks. Why is Jimin asking about the giggling interns?

“The giggling interns? I just took them with me to get field experience.”

That has Jimin chuckling. “The what?” He bends over with laughter.

“Oh, they're interning at my lab. I call them the giggling interns because they're always laughing. At me, usually. Laughing and flirting, blinking their little eyelashes at everyone at the convention.”

“Must be young, then,” Jimin assumes, correctly. “to be that confident.”

“Hey! That flirting got me two all-inclusive passes to Lotte so, I’ll excuse it.” Yoongi pulls the tickets out of his suit pocket. “Speaking of, I don't have use for these, so, you can have ‘em. Take Hyunmin.”

Jimin smiles, but shakes his head in rejection. “I’ll never have time. I work so much, then I’m too tired to do anything on my day off, I–why don't you?”

“Me?” Yoongi gapes.

“Why not? It’ll be fun for him, he's never been. And I know you spend your Saturdays reading manhwas, it's not like you have anything better to do,”

Yoongi ignores that comment. He definitely doesn’t flush with embarrassment.

“But—alone?” he has to ask again. Jimin, who watches Yoongi like a hawk during their guitar lessons, is offering this.

Jimin shrugs, unbothered. “I trust you.”

He trusts Yoongi. Since when? Yoongi thinks back to one of their last lessons. Jimin was lurking as always, though he wasn't cooking that time, like usual, just sitting in the kitchen on his phone. After a while, he had stood up and announced he was taking a nap. Yoongi hadn’t thought anything of it at the time, but now he's realizing it was a shift.

They've shifted.

Jimin will never want Yoongi like that, and that's fine, but at least the two of them are akin to friends now. As long as Yoongi gets to stay in Hyunmin’s life, that's all he can ask for. Yoongi can be Hyunmin’s other uncle. He can be Uncle Yoongi. He’ll be satisfied with that.

“Okay, then,”

Yoongi is having fun. He can admit that he's having fun at a children’s amusement park. The food is good, the rides are good and by the luck of the universe aren't making him sick, the weather is perfect. Not hot, not cold. Hyunmin is having the time of his life, taking pictures of everything and sending them to Jimin.

He would've thought that with the way Hyunmin is giving Jimin updates the omega wouldn't be asking Yoongi. And yet, his phone is being flooded with messages.

is he okay

is he being good

dont let him curse

i heard him cursing on the game last night

i didnt scold him tho

Jimin, we're fine

You're at work, go tend to your patients

They're fine. Yoongi takes Hyunmin to a gift shop to buy merch. He pulls three hundred thousand won out of his pocket, says it's an allowance from Jimin. Jimin, whom Yoongi knows is struggling to survive, has given Hyunmin money, probably so Yoongi wouldn't be burdened with buying him things. As if it would be a burden to Yoongi. As if Yoongi wasn’t ready to drop twice that amount on a present for Hyunmin.

“I’ll get what you want. Put that towards the new guitar you want,” Yoongi says.

Yoongi also previously offered to buy Hyunmin a new guitar, but Jimin shut it down before Yoongi could even get the sentence out of his mouth. He’d expected that, but Namjoon is always telling him he’ll miss one hundred percent of the shots he doesn't take. Yoongi apparently also misses one hundred percent of the shots he does take.

Hyunmin gets Pokémon toys, as expected. The cheapest things he can find, a habit he must’ve picked up from Jimin.

They're fine.

Hyunmin wants Oreo churros, so they get some, even though Yoongi really doesn’t care for sweets, he wants to take aesthetic pictures of the food to send to his friends, and apparently it won’t be as aesthetic with just one.

“Wait, I forgot to get the sauce,” Hyunmin says. “Can I go back?”

The cart is only ten feet away, it’s in Yoongi’s line of vision, Hyunmin is thirteen. Hell, when Yoongi was thirteen he was going to underground rap clubs by himself. Hyunmin takes the train by himself. It’s fine if Yoongi doesn’t stand over his shoulder for a minute.

“Go and come right back,” Yoongi allows.

Yoongi’s phone pings with more texts from Jimin. He looks away from Hyunmin’s retreating figure.

ok ur right

im helicoptering

just lmk when ur on ur way back

He decides not to respond, since he’s not on his way back yet. Yoongi heads over to the churro cart to see what’s taking Hyunmin so long. He isn’t there. The line is long, it wraps around a corner of a gift shop, and Hyunmin isn’t in it. Not caring about skipping, Yoongi steps in front of the next customer to ask the worker, “Was a kid just here? Tall as hell, red Pokémon shirt?”

The worker nods. “He was here just a minute ago. He went towards the castle.”

Yoongi is going to die. He’s going to die, and it’s going to be Jimin who killed him. Jimin will tie him to his own kitchen cabinets and turn on the gas until he dies of carbon monoxide poisoning so it looks like a suicide. Jimin is in the medical field, he knows how to make it look like a suicide. He circles, goes into every building and bathroom shouting Hyunmin’s name. He probably looks fucking crazy, it’s embarrassing as hell to have this obviously lost a kid. By the time Yoongi makes the decision to go to guest services, he’s sweating and his scent is so potent it’s making people turn their noses up. He’s only ever seen it in movies, where the kid gets lost—usually at Disneyland—and the staff will call the child’s name over the intercom. Yoongi’s not even sure if that's a thing in real life, but it’s his last, best bet before he has to call Jimin and give the news no parent wants to hear. Then call the police, most likely shut down the park for the rest of the day.

A tap on Yoongi’s shoulder stops him halfway.

“Yeah, that’s my dad!” Yoongi can hear someone who sounds suspiciously like Hyunmin exclaim, passing the staff member who tapped Yoongi.

“Sir, is this your son? He said he got lost,” she says, but Yoongi is no longer paying attention.

Dad. son. Dad? Son?

“Sir?” she asks again.

Yoongi pulls Hyunmin to him, heart racing, terrified and relieved. Hyunmin curls a hand into Yoongi’s shirt, “Sorry, Dad—I, the castle started lighting up, and I got distracted taking pictures. Then I got confused trying to get back.”

“This is, yes—thank you so much,” Yoongi says to the staff, then turns to Hyunmin, “I’ve been looking all over for you, kid,”

“Sorry,” he repeats.

Now, Yoongi can no longer concentrate. Why would Hyunmin say Dad? It doesn’t mean anything, it can't mean anything. Yoongi isn't a dad, he isn't, he's not ready for that. He's only thirty-three years old, he’s too young.

He's older than Jimin.

It doesn't mean anything. Hyunmin just said that because it's easier to say that. Saying my dad is a lot simpler than saying this is my tutor slash mentor slash ambiguous older male figure slash family friend. A shortcut.

“Let’s not tell Jimin that I lost you, okay?”

“Deal.” Hyunmin smiles.

They don't stay long after the incident, Yoongi is on edge for the rest of the day, not letting Hyunmin get a centimeter away from him, looking over his shoulder to make sure Jimin hasn't been secretly watching them all day and isn't going to come stab him in the back with a knife.

Jimin, who’s napping on the couch when Hyunmin lets Yoongi into the apartment. He’s changed out of his scrubs and his hair is damp, the television is playing the evening news. Yoongi’s face might’ve been on there if he hadn’t found Hyunmin.

“I’m goin’ to bed,” Hyunmin announces with a yawn. His voice makes Jimin jump awake, rubbing his eyes with his delicate hands.

“Y’re back?” Jimin asks, voice raspy and deeper than usual.

“He wore me out,” Yoongi jokes, though it really isn’t a joke, but Jimin doesn't need to know that. He sits down next to Jimin.

Jimin laughs. Well, chuckles, really. Yoongi still counts it as a win.

“Thank you, for taking him,” Jimin’s voice is low, vulnerable.

Yoongi shrugs. His mind is racing, his heart, his scent. He has to tell Jimin.

“Something happened today, though,” Yoongi’s voice is tight. Jimin sits up straighter, previously relaxed face turning tense. His brow furrows with concern.

“Wha–you said everything was okay,”

Yoongi stiffens. “It’s nothing bad. He just, he called me dad today. I thought I should tell you, because, you know…”

Why is he telling Jimin this? This instead of the real issue from today. Yoongi is not a father. Hyunmin already has one. He shouldn’t overstep his boundaries or try to insert himself where he isn’t wanted. Jimin doesn’t want him in the family, not in that way. Yoongi can’t handle it anyway, not when he can barely watch a kid by himself for a day.

Jimin goes silent for a while. So long, Yoongi thinks Jimin just isn’t going to say anything. He looks and smells dumbfounded. Maybe Yoongi shouldn't have said anything.

“I. I don't think he meant anything by it. He’s just—you’re always around, he probably got confused. But I'll talk to him,”

Now Yoongi is confused. “Jimin, it’s not a problem at all, I just don't wanna overstep or—”

“You should go.” Jimin cuts in. “I need to sleep, so you should go.”

Yoongi is not a person who sulks. He is not a person who pouts or complains or mopes or broods. He surely doesn't do it during his job, never that. He’s focused. Completely focused. He isn't thinking about Hyunmin or Jimin, or the fact that they’ve canceled guitar lessons for the past three weeks. Yoongi gets it. It's flu season, Jimin might be taking extra shifts, so Hyunmin would be with Taehyung. He doesn't expect Jimin to ask him to babysit, even though Yoongi lives just across the crosswalk and not on the other side of town. It’d be much easier, but he doesn't expect it. Or Hyunmin could even be home alone. Maybe Jimin thinks he's old enough not to need a babysitter.

No, that doesn't sound right. Jimin is a helicopter parent. That kid’ll still be babysat in high school.

“Min-ssi, don't you need to check our work?” Moka calls from across the room. He's sitting with piles of paperwork in front of him. Yoongi swears he does more of this than actual science.

The giggling interns are looking at Yoongi expectantly, smiling. What the hell are they so happy for?

“Aren't you two competent enough to do it yourselves by now?” Yoongi asks, a little too condescendingly. “Just give me the report when you're done. I’m not a babysitter,”

Yoongi grumbles some more at his papers, losing track of time, not noticing the hours pass until Moka announces she's going on lunch break. He should go too, he skipped breakfast, but he's only halfway through the stack and Yoongi refuses to take it home for the weekend.

“Do you want me to pick up something for you, Min-ssi?” Minju asks from where she's now standing in front of Yoongi's table. Yoongi doesn't need to look up to now she has a coy smirk on her face, hair tucked behind one of her ears.

“No,” Yoongi says snappily. His scent spikes without him realizing.

Minju hums, undeterred. “Are you okay? 'Cause you've been kinda mean, and you made Moka cry earlier.”

That makes Yoongi look up, taking off his glasses and throwing them to the side. “I didn't mean to do that, I'll apologize when she gets back. And I'm fine.”

“No, you're not,” Minju says, like it's final, like she knows what's going on in Yoongi's head. “But, uh, I can make you feel better?”

She flutters her eyelashes at Yoongi, her scent turns sweet. Minju is pretty. Her smell is pleasant enough. She's willing. Yoongi could. They have an hour for lunch, he could take her into his office and relieve his stress, give her what she wants too. If he were still his old self, his self when he was around her age, he would.

“I'm not interested, Minju, you know that,” he watches her. Her smile doesn't drop at all. She's not stricken with rejection at all. not the way Yoongi would be if he got told no so clearly. She's an enigma.

“Minju, you're so pretty, and intelligent, and talented. You could find a nice alpha your age, instead of going for an old man.”

Minju laughs, flips her hair. “Alphas my age aren't nice, Min-ssi. They're immature and incompetent. Not like you.” She pulls up a chair to sit across from Yoongi. “Usually alphas like younger omegas, but you can get any omega you want, so age probably doesn't matter, then.”

Yoongi also laughs, but it's fake, humorless. “Not true at all. That's—you think way too highly of me.”

“I see,” she hums. “It's one of those situations.”

Those situations?” Yoongi parrots. Minju is eyeing him knowingly.

“The omega you want doesn't want you back,”

“Whatever,” Yoongi murmurs, “it doesn't matter.”

Minju’s eyes widen suddenly, in recognition. “That omega from when we were at your house, with the boy,”

“H-how did you know?”

“Your scent got all… scenty when you saw them,”

It may be possible that Yoongi isn't as subtle or nonchalant as he thinks he is. This kid has got him completely figured out.

“Well, did you tell him how you feel?” Minju continues when Yoongi fails to say anything. He's not sure what to say. He shouldn't even be talking about this with giggling intern #1.

“He's not interested at all, he shuts me down,”

Minju growls. Honestly, really growls. She smacks her hand on the table. “Stupid alpha!”

Yoongi jerks, surprised at the outburst from the usually calm omega.

“You alphas are stupid. Answer the question, Min-ssi: did you tell him or not?”

He sighs. She doesn't get it. She's a child and doesn't get it. “What's the point? I mean, if he wanted me, wouldn't I see signs? I've flirted, and he does nothing.”

“An omega like that won't come onto you, not like I do. That boy was his kid, right? I presume he's a single omega parent. He’s not gonna make a move, and he probably doesn't think you want a relationship because of his kid. You need to think, Min-ssi.”

Yoongi guesses, well, maybe Minju has a point. He thinks of Jimin’s rant from the party, crying. If he could have someone to do it with, would he? Would Jimin choose Yoongi to do that with, to be Hyunmin's… dad? Or is Jimin alone by choice, and just gets overwhelmed sometimes, just needed to get it off his chest, but he prefers being alone?

Yoongi needs to know.

The only way to know is to ask.

Minju’s alarm goes off on her phone, snapping them out of their conversation.

“Talked through my lunch break,” Minju sighs with a smile.

“Take one anyway,” Yoongi stands up, as does Minju. “I’ll work on the experiment with Moka and say sorry.”

Jimin’s home by the time Yoongi gets home. His car is parked in his usual spot. Yoongi could call Jimin, or text him, or just go knock on the fucking door like a normal person instead of searching for his car like a stalker.

Yoongi does none of that. Instead, he eats, showers, sends emails, and falls asleep.

Someone is knocking on Yoongi's door. The sun isn't even beaming through the curtains yet and someone is knocking, loud. Yoongi groans and stumbles out of bed, nearly tripping over the bed frame without contacts or glasses.

Jimin is on the other side of the door, crying.

It's the first time Yoongi's seen his face in over a month.

“Please, hyung, I–please,” he's hyperventilating, face bright red. “It's Hyunnie.”

Yoongi runs.

As soon as Jimin opens his door, Yoongi is hit with the strong scent of—

“He's presenting, he's–” Jimin is panicking, continuously running shaky hands through his hair. “I'm not an alpha–I—Yoongi, what do I do? I don't know—”

All the windows are open, but the fresh air can't eliminate the scent of a presenting alpha pup, distress, pain.

“Hyung, he's only thirteen, he's just a baby—”

Yoongi pulls Jimin in for a hug, rubbing a hand down his back. Shockingly, he doesn't pull away, but melts into it, putting his head right in the crook of Yoongi's shoulder.

“You need to calm down,” Yoongi whispers close to Jimin’s ear. “He won't be calm if you aren't.”

Jimin nods with his head still there. Yoongi takes the opportunity, selfishly, to breathe in Jimin’s scent, which, even with his worry, is still pleasant to Yoongi.

“Right,” Jimin says quietly. “I’m a nurse, I know this. I can do this.”

Carefully, Yoongi steps into Hyunmin’s room. He's lying down, crying, the entire room is hot and stuffy. Yoongi uses one hand to cover his nose as he sits on the edge of the bed and wipes Hyunmin’s hair off his forehead with the other.

“Hey, kid,” Yoongi murmurs. Hyunmin looks up at him with red eyes.

“It hurts, Dad,” his voice is hoarse.

Yoongi nods. He remembers presenting, his mom next to him with cold towels to press against his forehead. She wasn't very nice about it, told him bluntly to quit crying and pop his knot, along with a lecture about how he couldn't go around knotting omegas even though he’d want to. She spoke like it's something they can't control, a primal urge. Then she locked him in his room until it was over, sliding medicine and protein bars through the small crack under his bedroom door. It was a good thing he had an attached bathroom.

“How do I make it stop?” Hyunmin cries. Yoongi's chest twists in pain, looking to Jimin for what to say. Certainly not the way his mother did it. Jimin is standing in the doorway, and he shrugs, looking more lost than Yoongi feels.

“He has a fever,” Yoongi says, to get Jimin out of the room, since he’s not going to help with the birds and the bees speech. Surely, Jimin has had the talk with Hyunmin to some extent, but he probably hasn’t gone in depth yet, and was probably waiting for this very moment.

Yoongi clears his throat. “Y-you have to,” he gestures vaguely to his abdomen, “relieve the pressure.”

Hyunmin furrows his brows. “Like… do that?”

Jimin comes back with two pills and a cup of water, feeding them to Hyunmin in a very nurse-y way. He steps back after, going back to the doorway to lurk.

“Yes,” Yoongi confirms. “Many times, most likely. And if you… hold th-the knot, it’ll go by a lot faster.”

Hyunmin nods. Yoongi hears Jimin whisper an “Oh, god,”

“But don't think this means you're an adult, because you're not. You're only thirteen and probably the first kid in your class to experience this, so…”

“No sex?” Hyunmin asks.

Yoongi nods in affirmation. “No sex. Not until you're ready and understand what it means mentally, and emotionally.”

“But I thought sex is physical? What does it have to do with the mental?”

Pursing his lips, Yoongi sighs. “And that's why you're too young to do it.”

“That was awful. Just horrible and awkward,” Yoongi whisper-yells after Jimin closes Hyunmin's door and they step back into the living room.

Jimin shakes his head. “No, it was great, so much better than I could've done it. Thank you.”

Yoongi should leave. He’ll be late to work, but he wants to ask what happened. Why he hasn't seen his two boys in almost a month.

He doesn't ask.

At this point, it snows every day. Sometimes too much for Yoongi to make it work, so his research slows down, it gives him time to apply for grants, gets permission from the big boss to give bonuses to the giggling interns. Their first year of school is ending soon, so the internship is ending, but Yoongi has already decided to hire them as regular staff. Part-time, easy, working around their school schedules. Namjoon has started forcing Yoongi to go to the gym, his shirts are steadily becoming too tight, but he looks good. Good enough to attract attention from omegas. Except for the one omega who isn't returning his calls and texts. Yoongi has tried to check on Hyunmin, check on Jimin, and nothing.

Everything in Yoongi’s life is great, except.

He's ready to give up. He's not sure if he ever tried in the first place.

Yoongi opens the lab today because the weather is somewhat normal. He prints out the giggling interns’ reports to give to the university, gives out the cash bonuses to all the staff, eats way too much food the big boss bought in to show ‘appreciation’. Then it starts snowing.

“Alright, let's close,” Yoongi announces to the few people that are still lingering past five pm. “It's not like we're doing actual work, anyway.”

“Min-ssi!” Minju calls, walking with Yoongi to the door. “Did you tell the omega? How did it go?”

He steps outside, puffer coat on and scarf wrapped tightly around his nose and mouth. She follows, staring at him expectantly. “I didn't tell him. And I'm not telling him,” the scarf muffles his words.

“You—you gotta be fucking kidding me, Min-ssi! Excuse my language,” she genuinely looks upset. “I’ve been waiting for an update, I've been watching your facial expressions for weeks to see if you're getting any happier!”

“I'm giving up Minju, I'm throwing in the towel,” he admits.

“No!” she stomps her foot like a child, “you can't. I–I found an alpha, Min-ssi. I found an alpha who's my age, and she's very mature and very competent, so. If I can do it, so can you.”

Yoongi’s not listening to a child. A teenager that throws a tantrum after interesting herself in his business. He's glad she found a relationship, but it's not like they made a pact or anything like that. She gave him advice once, and now she thinks she's entitled to know all his business?

Children.

He's not telling Jimin, but when he steps out of his car, ready to run to his door to get out the cold, he sees and hears Jimin and Hyunmin arguing outside.

“You think you can behave how you want? You're still a child, Hyunmin!” Jimin is shouting, louder than Yoongi has ever heard his voice.

“And you think you can be an asshole!” Hyunmin yells back. His voice is deeper than the last time Yoongi saw him. “Grandma and grandpa are waiting for me in the car. I’d rather be with them anyway,”

This isn't Yoongi’s business, but he inserts himself anyway, catching the way Jimin’s nearly in tears. He crosses over to Hyunmin, stopping him in his tracks.

“Kid, what the hell is wrong with you, huh? You can't talk to your dad like that,”

“He's being mean,” Hyunmin pouts, like a toddler.

“So that means you can speak however you want?" Yoongi scolds. "I get that you're probably having a hard time with being presented, but don't take it out on your dad."

"It's not—" Hyunmin pulls at his hair in a way Yoongi has seen Jimin do before, "he won't let me see you. He said you’re not allowed to come over anymore, and he won't tell me why. I hate him, I hate—”

“Hyunnie, we need to go," a soft voice calls from a car where an elderly omega stands next to it. Must be Hyunmin's grandfather. He bears a striking resemblance to Jimin.

Hyunmin leaves. Yoongi isn't sure when Jimin went up to his apartment, but he's gone too. But Yoongi—Yoongi is stuck standing in the snow. His body is shivering, fingers frozen, stiff, and Yoongi can't move. This is what he was scared of, this is what he felt deep down to be true, didn't want to admit is true. Stupid. Fucking stupid for thinking for even half a second there could be anything there. Stupid. Fucking… and stupid Minju for being optimistic. Stupid Yoongi for even thinking about taking advice from a stupid child.

He stalks up the stairs, nearly slipping in the ice twice, snow melting then re-freezing on his clothes. They make a crunching sound with every movement. Yoongi has his hand on the keypad. He should go inside and change, warm up, shower. Forget about Jimin. Yoongi can do that, he can forget about the pretty omega across the crosswalk, find someone else. It wouldn't be easy, It may take him a while, but Yoongi can move on from someone he was never with in the first place. Yoongi can forget.

He can't forget Hyunmin.

Yoongi walks across the crosswalk with a new conviction, pounding on Jimin's door with what is probably more force than necessary, but in his mind feels completely appropriate in the moment.

As soon as Jimin opens it, Yoongi forces his way in without permission, shedding his outer layers, the stupid coat and scarf so he doesn't get pneumonia, and throws them wherever the-fuck in Jimin’s apartment. He can't feel himself shivering.

"Yoongi..." Jimin takes a step towards him, then seems to rethink it, balking away.

"Fucking, fuck!" Yoongi yells. He doesn't yell, but he's yelling.

"Fine, talk," Jimin says. Jimin does yell, but he's quiet.

"I know he's your kid. I know you can do what you want, I respect that, but you couldn't even tell me? You don't respect me enough to do that, you just ghost me? Ignore me for weeks. Wait, except for when you need advice, right? Then I get to be the parent for an hour. I'm not the parent."

Yoongi can’t—he's having a hard time breathing, but he can't stop.

“I mean, what did I do? Tell me what the fuck I did wrong so I can fix it!”

Jimin is crying. He can smell the sorrow before he sees the tears. "It's not you, it's Hyunmin. He’s getting too attached," Jimin shakes his head, "especially since presenting. All he wants is you. It has to stop.”

Yoongi doesn't see the problem. "I don't see the problem.

I'm attached, too."

"The problem?! The fucking problem is he’s calling you his dad! When you leave, when you get tired of him, I'm gonna be left picking up the pieces. So if I have to be the bad guy in your story, I will be."

"Who's leaving? Because I'm not.”

His words have Jimin laughing.

"Everyone leaves, Yoongi. His own father, his own flesh and blood left, I'm not dumb enough to think you'll stay. You have no obligation to us—him. And when you lose interest, all he'll have is me, so. If you just leave now, it'll be easier. He'll be mad, he is mad, but he can heal. If I cut the cord now, it won't hurt as much."

Jimin is so stubborn. Yoongi likes that about him, but right now he fucking hates it, wants to throw him against the wall.

"Jimin, please listen." Yoongi pleads, begs. "As long as you want me here, I’m here. I love him, I’ll be his dad.”

"Why, Yoongi, why would you want this?"

"I don't know! I don't know why I want to take in a teenager and an irritating, stubborn omega, but I do. I’m affixed to you and now I can't go a day without thinking of you, so, are you gonna let me into your family or push me away?”

“I have worked too hard,” Jimin’s voice cracks, "I have protected myself and him too carefully to let an alpha swoop in and play us. If you want me, tell me and mean it.”

Yoongi crosses the room to grab Jimin, shoving him gently against the wall. He leans in, close,

"I want you. I just fucking said that like five times. Please. Let me want you. Let me want him."

Jimin cranes his neck, tears still on his face. Yoongi wipes them, breathes in the sweet citrus, letting it fog his brain.

"I'm gonna kiss you. If you don't want it, punch me.”

Yoongi’s face remains unpunched.

He grabs Jimin's chin, leaning In. Their lips press, soft, sweet. Yoongi can taste Jimin's lip balm. When he pulls away, Jimin smiles.

"Do it again, "Jimin whispers, "but mean it this time.”

Yoongi means it. He sucks Jimin’s bottom lip between his, lets his teeth scrape it so he can shove his tongue in Jimin's mouth. When the omega gasps. Yoongi licks and sucks, stealing Jimin’s breath, pushing his hard body against Jimin's soft one. Hands move to grip his wide hips and thighs.

Jimin pushes Yoongi away. "Okay, you're meaning it too much.”

"Sorry. " Yoongi murmurs, nipping at Jimin's jaw because he can't help it.

"Maybe Hyunnie will come home," Jimin says, pouty.

Yoongi stays close, hugging Jimin, resting his head on Jimin's shoulder. "You really sent him to live with his grandparents? All the way in Busan?"

Jimin wraps his arms around Yoongi too, rubbing his back. "Just for the school break, but I’m really scared he won't wanna come back,"

"He needs to apologize," Yoongi thinks back to what Hyunmin said to Jimin. Unacceptable.

Yoongi feels Jimin giggle. It vibrates through his chest.

"You’re already acting like a dad."

"I am, " Yoongi pulls back, just so he can puff his chest out, flushing when Jimin scoffs at his display of alpha.

"Should we tell him? Should we call him right now, or wait?” Jimin’s scent begins filling the room, suffocating.

"We should wait," Yoongi rushes to say. He needs to talk Jimin down before he starts freaking out, "let him enjoy his break."

"Right," Jimin sighs, nodding in agreement, "cause what if it doesn't work out?"

"It will." Yoongi insists.

"It'll work out."
