They first met at the Prospect Cup, December 2008, where they talked briefly.
In June 2010, they made a CNN commercial together. After the shoot of that commercial, they hook up for the first time.
From 2010 to 2016 they had a casual, non-exclusive secret relationship, mostly by phone or hooking up at hotels when they were playing in the same city.
In 2016, they stopped their meetings, leading to the publicly known relationship between Shane and Rose Landry. They broke up after she told Shane that he's gay.
In January 2017, at the All-Stars Game, Shane and Ilya got back together and confessed their feelings, and their relationship became exclusive and committed.
In 2017, they announced they were going to start the Foundation Irina.
They have been dating in secret until they revealed the relationship to the public in 2019.
