chapter two is a big annoncement go read that!!!!

...

Keefe almost thought he was the only person left wandering the streets.
His parents had gone, on their way to a safe haven, leaving him behind. And since then, he hadn't seen a single human that wasn't zombiefied. He was going crazy.

Tam needed to get to a safe haven.
He had watched his twin sister leave on the last bus there, desperately reaching for him and yelling for the bus to stop.
He wouldn't leave her alone, so everything he did was an effort to find the way to the haven.

Keefe had nothing better to do, so why not come along? That is, assuming Tam doesn't annoy him to death. Well, human interaction is human interaction.

Chapter Text

When the apocalypse started, Keefe had been alone.

His mom left, his dad was mean and absent.

But then he met Tam.

If you could see them now it might surprise you, but Tam and Keefe hated each other when they first met.

For what reason, Keefe couldn't tell you. There was just some aura of anger and hatred that followed the two. One of Keefe’s old friends had said that it was because they were similar, but he wasn't so sure about that.

But despite their hatred, Tam and Keefe stuck together.

They fought monsters together, ransacked stores for food together, and stayed in their shelter together.

And after all that time together, something changed.

They started laughing when they were around together, hanging out when it wasn't needed.

They became friends.

And then, more.

And now, they couldn't bear to be apart.

February 14. 132 days since the apocalypse started.

Keefe sat on the ground, next to the crappy radio that they had found a couple days ago. Most of the time it was just static, but sometimes music.

Today was one of those days.

A song came on, and Keefe recognized it.

He couldn't quite remember the title, and even the band's name was fuzzy. But he remembered it had an X in it.

And that before all this, Tam had told Keefe that he used to listen to them every day.

Keefe looked at Tam. the memory of music he used to love before the apocalypse surely should have been sad, bringing back memories.

But to his surprise, Tam was smiling.

“I remember this song. Good enough.” he said, and Keefe saw the tiniest bit of a tear forming. Most people wouldn't notice it, but they had been together too long for him not to see.

Climbing up to reach your land,

never done-

Keefe stood up, and extended his hand to Tam. he needed a way to cheer him up.

“May I have this dance, Mr Song?”

Tam smiled, and took it.

Though neither of the two actually knew how to slow dance, they grabbed each other and started moving around the room of their tiny shelter.

Just let me wave to you, not wave goodbye

Let me stay by your side

'Cause it's good enough

Yeah, it's good enough for me

Keefe noticed a new voice joining the singers, wondering who it was. That was until he realized that Tam was singing.

Tam wasn't exactly a singing person, especially during slower songs like this. But he quietly whispered the lyrics as the duo danced.

Don't let me go back to darkness of blue

As long as I'm with you

I want nothin' more, nothin' more, nothin' more

Cause it's good enough, good enough, good enough…” Tam sang, and Keefe felt mesmerized by his voice.

They both knew they could die any day. The past 132 days they had constantly had their guard up, never fully relaxing. But right now, though they could pass away even this same day, it felt like time stopped.

The sound of the song and the feel of Tam’s hands made Keefe feel like he could really rest for the first time.

And for the first time since all those days ago, Keefe felt happy.

It's not gravity or ocean wind

That always bring me back wanting you

I'll be true, it's just you

“Just let me wave to you, don't wave goodbye…” Keefe sang, after he realized Tam had stopped.

Tam looked up, not smiling but his eyes happy. “Let me stay by your side…”

“Cause its good enough–”

Tam actually started smiling now, tears finally really filling his eyes. “Yeah it's good enough…”

Keefe was about to say the next lyric when suddenly, Tam’s lips collided with his.

Though Tam and Keefe had been officially dating for around a month, this was the first time they had actually kissed.

And it was great.

Tam released, and Keefe realized that he was crying too.

They both smiled at each other. Though they could die any day, right now they both felt more alive than ever.

I want nothin' more, nothin' more, nothin' more

'Cause it's good enough, good enough, good enough

February 19

Tam was dying.

Keefe’s tears fell onto him, mixing with the red blood pouring from his abdomen.

“Come on, you can't die. You can't." he said, but he knew there was no point.

Tam was going to leave him no matter what he did.

“Keefe…” Tam said, and Keefe looked up to the sky.

Please, he thought, praying to whatever god he thought was up there. Please not him.

Keefe remembered hearing somewhere that to keep a dying person grounded you need to tell them memories that would help them cling onto life. Keefe had no idea if that was true, but he would try anything.

“Remeber the day they played that song from the band you like on the radio?”

It had only been a few days ago, but the happiness they had felt then was long gone.

Tam moved his head slightly, which Keefe decided was a nod.

“And we danced, and you kissed me, and we were so happy i felt like nothing could ever go wrong…”

The tears were coming stronger now, from a drizzle to a pour.

“The song…” Tam choked out.

“Yeah, that song.”

“Can you… sing it?”

Keefe’s eyes widened. “Yeah, sure Tam. uh…”

He struggled to remember the lyrics, but he had too. He would never forgive himself if his dying boyfriend had asked him to sing a song and he hadn't remembered it.

“Just let me wave to you, don't wave goodbye, let me stay by your side…” Keefe sang, the tune slightly messed up from the sobs that broke through his eyes and mouth.

“Cause it's good enough…” Tam slowly said, and Keefe knew he wasn't going to make it. In that moment, he knew he was going to lose the only person he cared about.

“Yeah it's good enough…”

Keefe wanted Tam to say the next lyric, but Tam had stopped moving.

Though Tam was dead, Keefe kept singing.

“For me, woah…”

Keefe picked up Tam’s body and started walking towards the shelter. If people saw him, a boy holding a corpse and singing, they would think he was insane.

But he didn't care.

“Dont let me go back to darkness of blue, let me stay here with you…”

Keefe laid down Tam outside, and walked to the other side of the shelter where he knew some flowers were.

“I want nothing more, nothing more, nothing more…”

He carefully set the small blue flowers on him, careful to not get them covered in blood.

“Cause it's good enough, good enough, good enough…”

It looks like Keefe would end the apocalypse alone too.
