Chapter 1: i should have known.

Chapter Text

“it’s not my fault you don’t like girls!” mike yelled at will.

will stood in silence for a moment. he stared into mike’s eyes, the patter of the pouring rain was the only sound. how did mike know? how did mike know that will was in love with him?

“im not trying to be a jerk. okay? but we’re not kids anymore. i mean, what did you think, really? that we were never gonna get girlfriends? that we were just gonna sit in my basement all day and play games for the rest of our lives?”

the thing is, that is what will wanted. the words cut into wills skin like a blade. they burned him and made him want to cry. will held back his tears.

“yeah. i guess i did. i really did.” will needed to leave, needed to get out of the place. it was too much to be with mike for a minute longer. the look in mikes eyes was sickening. mike looked oblivious to the fact that he had just broken wills poor heart.

will got to his bike and hopped on, ready to leave. he pushed out into the rain. mike yelled something at him, but it was all a strange blur. he rode his squeaky bike in silence. his legs ached but he needed to get home.

mike had ruined him. mike had torn out his heart, stepped all over it, thrown it out into the street, let it get run over, and stabbed it with a dull knife.

will was at castle byers. he threw his bike to the side and ducked into the fort. he plopped down onto the dirt ground. he didn’t care anymore about the rain. will sat for a moment, then picked up a magazine and flipped mindlessly through the wet pages.

it was of no use to cheer him up, though. he threw the magazine to the side and sighed. mike. mike was the only thing running through his brain. he couldn’t get the guy out.

will looked around castle byers. everything reminded him of the way things used to be. the way things should have been. now, the party all had girlfriends. they all had their people. who was wills person? the old DND board sat in the corner, pictures and drawings lining the walls of wood. memories flooded will’s brain. the old DND games. will rolling the dice and mike smiling. dustin freaking out over characters. lucas rolling his eyes at the three of them.

will’s eyes landed on a picture of the party, dressed in their ghostbuster outfits. his hands moved to pick up the photo. he looked at everyone’s grins. it would never be like this again. will would fade away. he would shrivel up and no one would notice. he had stopped mattering to the others long ago.

this was the first time he let himself cry. hot tears rolled down his cheeks, mixing in with the cold rain.

“stupid…” will muttered to himself. “so. stupid.” will ripped the photo into itty bitty pieces, never to be looked at again. he grabbed at pictures and drawings and things of the such, giving them the same twisted fate.

“stupid, stupid.”

wills vision turned to a baseball bat, one that lonnie had given will for his eleventh birthday. perfect. he grabbed the metal bat, still sobbing. will stood outside of his old safe place. this was it. this was the end of will’s happiness. he would destroy every memory, every moment. will didn’t want to feel anymore. he wanted to be a pit. it was easier than being so filled with emotion and pain.

will swung. the satisfying cracks of the old sticks filled his ears. he swung again and again, destroying any evidence of his innocence. he screamed and cursed, letting it all out. will grabbed at the broken frame, pulling it all down. he fell down onto the wood, staring at his wretched creation. it was gratifying to see that for once, he had done something that made him happy in his own sick way.
