Eddie came back into the house after dropping his son off at Abuela's and looked around, expecting his boyfriend to be in the living room, most likely on his phone doing some kind of research. He looked forward to finding out what his latest rabbit hole led him to. However, that room was empty and the house was suspiciously silent, leaving him to wonder what he was up to. It would not be a surprise, he knew. Buck was well aware that he did not like them and avoided doing so. That was only one of the many reasons he loved the man. He listened to everything and always tried to make life easier for Eddie without compromising Chris's or his own, though the latter had taken some work on both of their parts.
A slight noise drew his attention further into his house. He should have thought of that. Buck's favorite room in the house was most likely to be the kitchen, so he should have considered it.
It was a quick trip there, though he stopped in the doorway, confused by what he was seeing. Paper covered the kitchen table, and shards of pottery were everywhere. Where had he even gotten any kind of pottery? He knew he did not keep much in the house other than plates and mugs, but this was the wrong color and seemed to form something larger than what was available. Maybe Buck had brought something? But why he would bring something broken over left him confused.
"What's all this, Buck?" he asked, leaning against the door jamb and crossing his arms as he grinned, always happy to see his boyfriend. The sunshine smile he was gifted in return always brightened his day, and this time was no different.
"I saw this thing called kintsugi and wanted to try it. This isn't real kintsugi, but it's kind of similar, and it didn't seem like it would be too hard. Chris is going away for camp soon, and you picked up some extra shifts, so I wanted to have something to do while you're working. Now that I'm actually looking at it, I'm not sure that I'll finish it, but maybe Chris would be interested."
"Explain it to me," he said, pushing off from the door jamb and joining Buck at the table, his gaze drifting over everything spread across the table. At least there was newspaper under everything to protect the finish. Buck was not always the neatest person when it came to projects, but he still smiled as his boyfriend started telling him about how he had come to order the kit.
Buck did end up being right; he did not finish reconstructing the vase in the kit that he had bought. But Eddie found that he enjoyed the process of carefully piecing the ceramic back together. In fact, he had found that he enjoyed it enough that he had gone to a few thrift stores and found some dishes he liked enough to display after he broke and then repaired them.
