Celestial Land

Summary:

Moving houses. First time in Skylar’s whole 14 years of life.

What a.. wonderful experience! Totally! Everything was great! The sun was shining, the birds were chirping.

And on days like these, kids like Skylar’s obnoxious little brother should be at school.

But no.

They were on a multi-day road-trip to move houses in the middle of nowhere! Home-schooled and stuck in a dingy small car, forced to spend time with family, and moved far, far, away from friends.

What more could Skylar possibly want?

Perhaps, an escape to their troubles?

Or perhaps, they could just.. disappear into that strange locked room in the middle of the night?

Chapter 1: Home Sweet Home?

Chapter Text

Another long day stuck in a cramped, over-heated car that your parents refused to believe wasn’t that hot. Another long day stuck trying to listen to your music, read, and draw, but instead being forced to listen to your obnoxious little brother who wanted to talk about any random thing that showed up on his screen. Being forced to sound like you liked it so your parents wouldn’t scold you for being mean.

That, was how Skylar was feeling and experiencing.

The wonderful, momentous occasion of moving houses to the middle of nowhere. Leaving your friends behind. Losing all connection to the real world besides average reception. Home-schooling. No escape from suffocating family time.

Skylar really wasn’t having a good time. The best they could do was hope that the road-trip was almost over. That they could finally get out, stretch their legs, choose their room and lock themself in. Draw to their hearts content and not be bothered by family until necessary.

But that was pushing it. Their brother couldn’t go one whole song without pushing a new video or photo into their face. Skylar was sure they would snap if it weren’t for their common sense.

What a lovely day. Mhm. Couldn’t get any better! Why wish for more when you have ‘fAmIlY bOnDiNg TiMe’?

Just as their patience reached the boiling point, the car stopped causing Skylar to look out the window.

It was beautiful. The house was a stunning, two-storey wooden cabin, there was a lake with a waterfall nearby, the forest was just thick enough to be fun for playing, and the backyard was the forest itself.

Skylar’s near-perfect dream.

They hopped out the car in record time for how sluggish they had been the whole road-trip, headphones nearly getting yanked out its socket because they forgot to grab their phone as well.

Of course, that reminded them to do so.

But alas, good moods can never last long.

“Skylar! I bet I can beat you to the best room!”

Shouted the obnoxiously loud voice of their little brother.

Competitive spirit fired up. Within moments, Skylar was moving, running through to get the room they wanted so desperately. A room with a view of the lake. While running past the different doors labelled with different images, they paused at the second-floor, when there was a door with a purple crescent moon painted on it. It seemed interesting enough. Skylar moved to open it, only for it to be locked.

Odd.

It shouldn’t be locked. However, their brother running past reminded them of the challenge, and quickly Skylar skidded to a stop inside of a door with a yellow sun painted on it. Pushing it open, Skylar gazed in awe at the view. The windows were large, and you could see the entire lake from there. The waterfall, the rocky banks, the towering pine forest, the birds flying around. And best of all? The beautiful orange-pink hue in the sky as the sun set just above the waterfall, casting a glimmery glow on the water and making a mini rainbow.

It was perfect. Skylar couldn’t ask for more.

They glanced around the room. The bed could go there, the desk, the bookshelf, the drawing corner, the art wall, fairy lights. Everything.

About 2 hours later of waiting around for the moving truck to arrive, the news was broken. It was delayed. For two days. No furniture for two days. But that was fine! Because they had sleeping bags and tents! Skylar was more than willing to camp outsi-

“We won’t be sleeping outside, it’s too cold for that.”

The deadpan voice of their father broke through Skylar’s cheer, shattering their joy like a ball thrown at a glass window.

Skylar looked to their mother, to their brother, then back to their father.

“Wh- What? But- but what are we supposed to sleep on when inside?”

They asked, not quite understanding.

“Skylar, we’ll be sleeping in the sleeping bags in our rooms.”

Their mother said with a tired tone, not wanting to deal with this.

Fine! If that’s how they were going to be, Skylar would sleep on their balcony. With the wilderness as much as possible!
