Wind Beneath Wings

Summary:

Helga stepped forward, her boots pressing into the damp earth as she gestured around them. “Don’t you feel it?” she asked. “The magic?”
Helga wandered back out of the castle ruins. She stepped carefully over the uneven stones, her fingers grazing the rough edges of the crumbled walls.
Salazar watched her go, his gaze dropped to the ground beneath her feet.
The earth moved.
Each step she took, the ground shifted ever so slightly, as though the land itself was breathing beneath her. The soft rise of dirt and stone trailed her movements, as if responding to her presence. The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end.
His eyes widened. “Helga…” Her name wasn’t spoken loud enough.
Helga came to a halt, her gaze fixed on the vast, untouched lake stretching before her. The water was still, a perfect mirror reflecting the sky above. But the ground beneath her…
“Helga!”
Helga barely had a moment to react before the ground beneath her boots fractured, thin lines spiderwebbing outward like veins of lightning. The solid earth trembled violently, as if something deep beneath the surface had stirred awake.
Then, before Salazar could pull her back, the ground gave way.

NOTE: This Helgazar and Rodric fic has been written and rewritten so many times and has tested my patience, but it’s been in the works since 2021 and I’ve decided to post it.

I will be posting in chunks a couple times a month or more - it’s a lot to post at once. It's a LONG one

This story begins in the middle (part I), then I will take you to what they faced beforehand (part II), followed by the end of their story (part III). This is mostly through Helga’s perspective, but is multi-POV. Some warnings: Implied reference to child abuse, child death, hangings, burnings, executions, major character deaths (they all live out their lives, I tell the story until the last Founder dies), there is one scene with animal death - I will mark this in case anyone wants to skip over, allusion to non-con, memory loss, torture, violence.

There are some very dark and gruesome scenes, especially in the second part as that explores more of the witch trials. These were the witch trials in medieval Europe, so it is intended to be dark. 50,000-60,000 innocent people died in the European witch trials. I pulled a lot of information from my history of medieval witchcraft class in undergrad, and brought in inspiration from the Witch (2015) and Salem the show. Though I have trouble staying in that state of mind, so I put in lots of comfort scenes as well. Please read with caution.
