Work Text:
Iruka was late to their weekly outing. The friend group had a running reservation at the “Bell”, their favourite pub. Not everyone could always make it, missions whisking them away from the village, but whoever was in the village would show up. Iruka fastened his strides, the sign of the pub already in sight, when a voice behind him brought him to a stop.
“Maah, Iruka, why the rush?”
Kakashi strolled up to him, putting his book into one of his pockets.
“I don’t like being late, unlike other people.” Iruka smiled, to let the alpha know he was joking, and as always, something in him fizzled warmly, when Kakashi’s eye crinkled in an otherwise hidden smile. Iruka’s crush on the older alpha was nothing new for him, but it still sometimes caught him off guard.
“As long as you are there before me, you are not late.”
“Well, now I will arrive with you, which makes me late.”
They grinned at each other, as Kakashi opened the door and held it for Iruka to enter before him. Iruka stepped into the warm building, already making out Genma, Izumo, Kurenai, and Asumo.
“Not late now,” Kakashi’s voice was right next to his ear and Iruka had no idea, if he imagined the feelings of Kakashi’s lips on his ear, but the heat of Kakashi’s body behind his was very real.
Iruka swallowed and made his way over to their friends. He had news to share.
When they were both seated and had their drinks in front of them Iruka cleared his throat.
“I decided to sign up for the mating run this year.”
The silence around the table would be deafening, if it were not for the background noises in the pub.
Izumo was the first to speak up.
“Did you not always say you would never sign up?” Izumo knew Iruka’s real reason. He always hoped Kakashi would show interest in the run, or in him directly. But Kakashi never did, so Iruka never signed up, but it was time to let it go.
“I am 22 years old. It is time to put myself out there and find a mate. I don’t want to be alone anymore.” it was neither a lie, nor the full truth, but Iruka felt better with his decision. It was time to let his feelings for Kakashi go.
“What are you doing here?” Iruka’s mouth was wide agape, taking in Kakashi in the traditional clothes for alphas participating in the mating run. He himself wore the very flimsy dress omegas wore traditionally. Kakashi wore only a knee long pair of pants, his abs on full display.
“Signed up for the run.” Iruka wondered if Kakashi technically was breaking the rule, as he still wore his mask. The Sharingan eye was on full display, as all inherited techniques were allowed during the run.The alpha was stunning with his hair falling into his eyes. Iruka himself wore his hair down, the brown waves cascading down his back.
“You never signed up for the run before.”
“Well, you never signed up for the run so was there no omega I wanted to catch.”
Iruka gaped at Kakashi, processing the words.
“See, I always wanted you as my omega, but you never seemed to be interested in having a partner, but now you signed up and I would rather die than have anyone else touch you.”
“But - but,” the first bell rang, signaling Omegas to their starting position.
“Iruka, do you want me to catch you?”
“Yes.” Iruka’s heart was pounding in his chest, his mind still not fully wrapping around what just happened.
“Then get to your starting line and don’t make it too easy on me.” Kakashi grinned at him, turned around, and joined his fellow alphas at their mark.
Iruka knew this run was not his best work of presenting his abilities. Kakashi’s confession had messed up his entire mindset, but he knew it would not matter anyways. Kakashi would find him and he would not let any alpha have him before that. He was resting against a stone when his hair on his neck stood up. Something, someone was watching him, hunting him. He caught a red eye through the trees and bolted. Don’t make it too easy for me. Fuck, Iruka was making it easy, way too easy for Kakashi. He zigzagged through the woods and jumped over a small stream, but a body colliding against his own stopped his run.
But it was not Kakashi above him, it was Naruto, who blinked at him in confusion.
“You are not Sasuke.”
“Great observation skills,” Kakashi stepped through the trees, “now get off my omega.”
“Sorry Senseis.” Naruto gave them one more sheepish look before bolting.
Iruka supported himself on his elbows, looking up at Kakashi.
“Not exactly how I imagined you catching me,” he smiled and Kakashi lowered himself next to Iruka.
“Me neither, but also a very Naruto thing to happen.” They smiled at each other before Kakashi pulled down his mask and leaned over Iruka, pressing him into the soft ground of the forest. Their lips finally met and Iruka realised this was his first kiss ever. And with the alpha he always wanted.
“You sure you wanna bond with me?”
Kakashi leaned back.
“Iruka, there has never been anyone else I wanted, it has always been you, even before you presented.”
Iruka took in Kakashi’s face, the honesty in his eyes, the little mole he never knew was there below his lips.
“You are stunning, why are you hiding your face? I always wondered.”
A laugh, an actual laugh escaped Kakashi’s lips.
“Promise me to never tell anyone,” and even before Iruka could make any promise Kakashi continued, “as a kid I thought it would make me look cool and mysterious and then I never stopped and then it became this whole thing and now it just feels wrong to not wear a mask.”
Iruka blinked up at him.
“That is actually very adorable and I would love to tease you about it some more, but I am actually really horny right now.”
Another laugh escaped Kakashi before the Alpha went back to kissing Iruka, his fingers dipping below the dress Iruka was wearing, teasing up his thighs, and then circling around Iruka’s hole which was already soaked in slick.
Kakashi scooted down, wrapping his mouth around Iruka’s leaking cock, while making sure his hole was well stretched. Their mating was unhurried and soft, more kissing than actually moving, if Iruka was honest, but the slow, languid strokes of Kakashi’s cock against his prostate were enough to soon bring him close to the edge, and nothing was holding him back, when the alpha sunk his teeth into his bonding gland. Whispered promises of pups and family bliss brought Kakashi over his edge, and they needed a while to catch their breaths, before they left the forest.
Iruka was moved into the Hatake family estate by the end of the day, and neither of them left the house for three days, before Team 7 came knocking, demanding their Sensei to come out and train them. A fresh bonding mark on Sasuke’s neck and a proud smile from Naruto let Iruka know that the blonde one had eventually found Sasuke during the run.
And just a few weeks after the run, Iruka started throwing up. Team 7 was gone for a few weeks on a mission, so Iruka went to the hospital on his own, Tsunade herself conducting his test, which came back positive.
With Team 7 being gone, Iruka planned to not share the news yet with anyone, as he wanted Kakashi to be the first one to know, but he should have known better about Konoha and news travelling fast. He honestly was not surprised when Kushina showed up at his door, Minato in tow, crib and other baby things under their arms.
They came into the house like a little whirlwind and left with cheekkisses on Kushina’s end and a hug from Minato.
“You two will be amazing parents, I make sure to lessen Kakashi’s high rank mission for a while,” the Hokage winked at him and they were gone again.
“Make sure, to let the team babysit a lot, so the boys can get some experience with children before they decide to get their own little ones.” Kushina waved at him and Iruka blinked at their retreating backs for a while. The thought of Naruto and Sasuke made him shudder. They were still little babies themselves in his eyes but he agreed that some practice would not be bad for them.
When Kakashi came home, Iruka had a plan. There would be a nice candlelit dinner, some cuddling on the couch and then he would tell Kakashi. But the alpha had other plans.
As soon as he stepped through the door Iruka saw him sniff the air, eyes boring into the omega. Kakashi stepped closer, sniffing Iruka’s gland.
“Milky.” Was all Kakashi said, before lifting his mate up, Iruka wrapping his legs around Kakashi’s waist, and then they kissed.
“You are pregnant,” Kakashi stated and Iruka nodded, “welcome home.”
“I like coming home to news like this.” They grinned at each other and then they were hugging, soaking each other in.
“I love you,” Kakashi buried his face in Iruka's neck, inhaling his mate’s scent.
“I love you too.”
