Notes:

honestly i have quite a few under 1k word ficlets of sonic/reader stuff in a doc that i've been writing for fun, it's all been verrryyy self indulgent so i didn't think to share it anywhere but i really liked this one and decided to publish it :P they're all tooth rotting fluff and maybe i'll get to publishing them eventually, but hopefully this one is enough for now. this hedgehog has infiltrated my mind unfortunately, we're having a beautiful spring wedding

Chapter Text

You take your time going to the front door after three knocks rudely interrupt you from the endless phone scrolling, leaving you to mumble about who could possibly be here at the late hour of 11PM as you shuffled across the floor.

“Oh— hey, I wasn’t expecting to see you!” You chirp, all that irritation escaping your body the second your eyes land on your beloved boyfriend as he flashes that charming grin you know all too well. You open the door wider, an invitation to let Sonic step inside of the familiar home, which he eagerly takes. He makes sure to press a kiss to your cheek as a thank you while he makes his way in, taking off his shoes per your threatening request after he tracked mud in last visit.

“Yeah, sorry I’m here so late, sunshine,” he says, an apologetic— maybe even a little sheepish?— smile growing as he scratches his cheek. “I was wondering if I could crash here for the night?”

“C’mon, you know that’s fine with me.”

The hedgehog sighs in relief at this. Truth be told, he always gets the best sleep when he’s with you. He’s sure he’s admitted it already, but lying with you in his arms hits better than any melatonin could. He ends up somehow more rested than when he uses his brother’s tails as a makeshift pillow and blanket. It also helps that your home is comforting in all the right ways; maybe due to the fact he associates it with you and your already comforting presence, but the cozy space that’s so unabashedly you makes him feel at ease. He loves being let into your little world like this.

“Awesome! You’re the best,” he sighs, “was I interrupting?”

“Nah, it’s fine. I should probably get to sleep, anyways.” You yawn, stretching a bit as you make your descent down the hallway to your bedroom, letting him follow behind.

You fall into the familiar routine of crawling under the sheets, smiling up at him to join you, which he wastes no time doing. Soon enough he’s snuggled up against you, arms wrapped lazily around your waist as he takes in the quiet. Your fluffy pillows with your numerous plushies and your sweet scent… Sonic would happily hibernate here if he could.

“Thanks again for lettin’ me stay over,” he says softly, not wanting to disrupt the peace and quiet you two have created. “I always get the best sleep when I’m here.”

You smile softly at his casual admission, though you could’ve deduced that already through the gentle wagging of his tail he thinks you don’t notice when you’re being held, and how he’s almost frustratingly difficult to wake up in the morning every time.

“It’s no problem, but why were you here so late? You weren’t on a run, were you?” You question. It wasn’t completely out of left field to wake up some nights to him at your window, silently asking to be let in to sleep, or asking you to join him on a midnight adventure when you’re having one of your sleepless nights.

“I was taking care of some Badniks, but your place is closer from where I was than Tails’ and I was wiped,” he answers, “plus, I couldn’t miss a chance to see my favourite cat.”

Pfft, ever the charmer he is. You playfully scoff at this, though you can’t help the smile growing on your face. “How sweet,” you chuckle. “I always love seeing my favourite hedgehog, so we both win.”

“That’s a relief,” he plays along, sighing in fake relief. “I mean, I just like coming over in general. Being with you makes me feel at home even though I don’t actually have a home, y’know?”

Oh.

Oh wow. Your breath hitches for a second, taken aback by the unexpected yet very heartfelt turn this conversation has taken. You hadn’t expected to make him feel that way, his life is such a whirlwind that it never even crossed your mind he would want some peace amidst all the chaos. The thought of being a safe haven for him melts your heart, knowing he loves you enough to let himself take a breather like that.

“Well, if you ever do want a home, my door’s always open,” you softly reply, letting the proposal sit for a minute.

You’d been debating bringing the idea up of moving in together for a while, just never finding the right time. You know domesticity like this isn’t always his taste; preferring to be on the run doing his own thing, but a year and some into your relationship has you thinking more seriously about things, you admit it makes you feel all warm inside at the thought of sharing a space with him full time. And that’s not a crime, is it?

He certainly wouldn’t mind that, Sonic thinks after you gently broach the idea. Especially if he gets to see you everyday, or at least more often whenever he’s around not travelling or saving the world. He would like to see you more, even doing the mundane things that make his love for you grow all the same as your more thrilling outings.

A giddy smile grows on his face, his arms around you ever-so-slightly tighten their grip. You hear the unmistakable faint thumping of his tail wagging under the covers.

“Yeah, I’d like that.”
