Chapter Text

“Please, just go to sleep baby.” Enid bounced the 3 month old in her arms, willing the screaming to stop for a moment. She’d stripped the blonde down to just her diaper, turning off the heating in the apartment, and opening all the windows in an attempt to quell the fever, to no avail.

Enid hadn’t slept properly in days, the few hours she had got filled with restless tossing and turning before she was eventually awoken by the screams of her daughter. When she’d decided to go through with the process of having a baby, using a donor from the werewolf registry, she hadn’t fully accounted for how hard being a single parent was sometimes - especially with no familial support system. Yoko, Divina and Euguene had been a godsend, the former of the three actually having stayed with Enid for the first week, having also been there by her side for the birth. But now, alone in her apartment, with her sick baby, she had no support.

She looked down at the baby in her arms, thin strands of wavy blonde hair damp from the fever she carried, blue eyes shining with tears as she continued to fuss. Enid felt her own tears fall from her eyes as she started pacing around the room, shushing Evie as she continued to bounce her in her arms, one hand soothingly patting her back.

Too caught up in her own distress, she didn’t notice the front door open until the floorboards by the door creaked. Her eyes snapped to the sound, claws jutting out as a protective growl bubbled in her throat. What she hadn’t expected was Wednesday Addams to be standing in her doorway, dark eyes regarding her with an expression that Enid was far too tired to decipher. Regardless, she felt guilt claw at her gut, knowing Evie’s cries would’ve undoubtedly been heard clearly from Wednesday’s apartment next door.

“Enid?”

The dam of tears she was trying to hold back broke as she stumbled into a ramble. “I am so so so sorry. I promise I’m trying to get her to stop. She’s ill and she’s running a fever and she just won’t settle and I am so sorry for the noise-”

“Enid.” Wednesday’s voice cut her off, the brunette's brow creased in concern as she took a step towards the distressed blonde. “You do not need to apologize.” Her eyes raked over Enid, taking in the deep bags under the woman’s eyes, the exhaustion on her face clear to Wednesday. “When was the last time you slept?”

Evie continued to cry, Enid still bouncing the girl in her spot, shifting her to the other arm. She rubbed her free hand over her face, brushing away some of the tears. “I- I don’t know.” Another wail broke from the baby, Enid wondering how such a small child could make such a noise. Her voice cracked as she spoke again, “She won’t stop crying.”

Wednesday closed the gap, offering out her arms to the blonde. “Give her here.” When Enid opened her mouth to protest, eyes wide in obvious shock, Wednesday added sternly, “You need to get some sleep. I am quite capable of managing to take care of a child for a couple of hours.” The two of them stared at each other for a moment, Wednesday’s stare leaving no room for argument before Enid relented, carefully placing her daughter into the seer’s waiting arms, surprised in the ease that Wednesday adjusted her hold to properly support the baby in her arms. “I am assuming that there are bottles in the fridge?”

Enid nodded, eyes unable to take themselves away from the sight in front of her. Despite the wails coming from the girl in her arms, Wednesday didn’t flinch or seem bothered to any extent - Enid should’ve expected it really, having once been all too familiar with the brunette’s taste in extracurriculars. “Are you sure you don’t mind?”

“Go to sleep, Enid.” Wednesday’s focus was unwavering from Enid’s face, watching as Enid deliberated unsurely for a moment before the fight in her disappeared, shoulders dropping in exhaustion. Slowly, she stepped forward, placing a kiss on her daughters head, eyes shining with a mixture of guilt and tears as she stepped away under Wednesday's unrelenting gaze, doing everything she could not to look back around as she headed to her bedroom - knowing that she needed the sleep and that her daughter was safe in Wednesday’s care.

With Enid going to rest, Wednesday finally shifted her gaze down to the girl in her arms. She had recalled Enid telling her the girls names in one of their, admittedly, awkward conversations over the past couple of weeks. Evie Sinclair. She hummed as she took in the fuss coming from the girl, the ability of the baby to scream for such a prolonged period of time borderline impressive.

“You make a lot of noise.” Carefully, Wednesday shifted her arms, cradling the girl with one arm beneath her head and her other hand supporting her bottom. She noted the fact that as well as Enid’s near platinum hair, the girl also had her striking blue eyes which were currently screwed up as she continued to scream. “It is rather unnecessary of you to be causing such a fuss.”

At the sound of Wednesday’s calm, monotone voice, the wails quietened slowly, though the crying continued, large tears falling down the baby’s face, expression crumpled in the same way Enid’s did when she was upset. “That is better. Now, how about we let your mother sleep. I am sure you can manage that.” Blue eyes stared at her in wonder, a small hand reaching to grip onto her shirt with a surprising amount of strength, tears slowing to a stop.

Breaking her own eyes away from the girl as she slowly swayed her back and forth in her arms, she surveyed the apartment around her. Her and Enid were only just on speaking terms, the two of them having not been in contact with each other since their first year of university. A few days after Wednesday had moved in, she’d elected to try and apologize to the blonde, after all, the argument that had caused their break up had been mostly her own fault, her own recklessness pushing Enid to her breaking point once again. She’d accompanied her apology with the promise that she would give Enid as much time as she needed. Solitude over the past few years had been satisfactory, the perfect environment for working on her Viper De La Muerte series, the first three having been published in the time. However, as time stretched on, it had become increasingly hard to ignore the Enid Sinclair shaped hole in her chest. Admittedly, her move to New York of all places had been premeditated, having known that Enid resided in the apartment building before she had secured her own place in it. Her heart still belonged to the woman and she vowed that she would do whatever it took to win back her trust.

The fact that Enid had had a child had not been completely surprising, the topic having come up a few times in the time they had known each other, yet it stirred something in Wednesday that Enid had moved on with her life, the brunette still hopelessly stuck in Enid’s dorm room on that day in November, the two of them not having fought like that since that night at the Gates Mansion. Now, sitting in Enid’s apartment, she was reminded of just how much of the blonde’s life she’d missed.

When Enid woke up, hours later, she first noted that it was starting to get dark in her bedroom, despite her open curtains. Rubbing the sleep out of her eyes, she turned over to look at her alarm clock, eyes widening at the late hour of the afternoon. Panic spiked in her gut for a second, her eyes frantically looking over to Evie’s crib, only to remember that her daughter was being watched by Wednesday. She leant her head back against her pillow, taking a deep breath as she composed herself. She had to admit that the sleep had done her the world of good, feeling more refreshed than she had in days.

The smell of food wafted through her bedroom door, her growling stomach reminding her that she hadn’t eaten all day. As she swung her legs over her bed, she noticed just how quiet the apartment was, her ears only picking up the faint sound of music coming from behind the wall. Quietly, she padded out of her bedroom, freezing at the sight that greeted her. Wednesday was stood in the kitchen, plating up food as Evie slept in her travel crib that Enid kept in the living room. Soft instrumental music drifted through the room from the speaker in the corner, her apartment noticeably more tidy than it had been that morning.

“You got her to sleep.” Wednesday turned to look at her, dark eyes flickering to Evie and then back to her.

“Yes, it would seem that my voice managed to soothe her to sleep.” Enid chuckled softly. Of course Wednesday Addams would be the one to get her kid to finally sleep. “I made you some food, considering it seems like you have not had a proper meal in days.”

Enid flushed at the comment, eyes averting from Wednesday’s in embarrassment at the observation. “You didn’t have to do all this.” Her voice was a murmur, filled with emotion at the gesture.

Wednesday returned to the plates of food. “It is the least I could do.”

The brunette picked up the two plates, carrying them over to Enid’s small dining room table, before turning back to the kitchen to grab two mugs - one filled with hot chocolate and the other with black coffee. Enid took her seat, mouth watering at the food that greeted her. She hadn’t been able to go shopping that week, but Wednesday had made do; a delicious looking plate of pasta sat in front of her, Enid wasting no time as she tucked into it.

They ate in comfortable silence, the only noise being the quiet music still playing in the background as they ate their food. There was no lingering awkwardness hanging in the air, despite the fact that it was their first time properly in each other's presence since they’d been reunited, the domesticity of the situation clicking into place with ease. Of course, the bubble that they found themselves in soon burst as Evie woke up, her cries filling the room as Enid took a deep sigh, beginning to push her chair back, only to be stopped by a cold hand on her arm. “Eat. I will get her.”

Wordlessly, Wednesday stood up from her seat before Enid could even begin to process what had been said, taking the few short steps to the crib and gently picking Evie up out of it. The cries stopped as Wednesday gently rocked Evie back and forth in her hold, before walking back over to the table with her. Maneuvering Evie so that she was holding her with one arm, she resumed her eating, small gurgles of sound leaving the baby as she gripped onto Wednesday’s shirt. Enid watched in awe, tears filling her eyes at the sight in front of her.

Wednesday looked at her, dark eyes filled with concern as she watched Enid wipe at a rouge tear. “Enid. What is wrong?”

“Nothing,” She sniffled. “It’s just- I- Thankyou Wends.”

The seer shook her head. “You do not need to thank me.”

The rest of their dinner was uneventful, considering they had been nearly finished when they were interrupted. After they had both finished, Enid took their plates to the kitchen before getting a bottle out of the fridge for Evie. Wednesday stood at the dishwasher, handing the baby over to Enid carefully, before filling the dishwasher with their empty dishes and putting it on. She tidied away the mess on the sides before moving to join Enid where she sat on the couch, Evie making soft suckling noises as she drank from the bottle of milk in Enid’s hold.

Blue eyes looked at Wednesday in silent question, amusement tinted in them. “I thought you didn’t like kids.”

“I don’t. Most children scream and run away when they see me.”

“Yet here you are.”

Wednesday let out her own version of a sigh, a short breath through her nose as she looked at the baby in Enid’s arms. “She is tolerable.”

Enid huffed out a laugh, turning to Evie and running a finger over her cheek as she fed. She leant down to place a kiss on her head. “You hear that, Wednesday likes you.”

Wednesday rolled her eyes, “Don’t twist my words, Sinclair.” There was no malice behind her words, Enid letting out another laugh at the comment. Wednesday’s stomach churned at the sound, something akin to content fluttering inside her at the thought that she had been the one to make Enid laugh, something she worried she may never get the privilege of doing again.

“If it’s any consolation, she likes you too. I mean she screamed at Bianca the first time she held her.” That brought out a smirk on the brunette's face, the visual of Bianca being screamed at by the child, face contorting in a grimace, enough to amuse Wednesday.

When Evie was finished feeding, Enid placed the bottle down on the coffee table, grabbing a small cloth instead as she shifted the baby to burp her, wiping her small mouth afterwards. Enid felt her forehead with the back of her hand. “Her fever’s almost gone. Thank you again Wends.”

Wednesday nodded at her, standing up from her seat on the couch, not wanting to overstay her welcome. Before she made a move to leave, she picked up a pen and post-it note off the coffee table, scribbling down her phone number before handing it to the woman in front of her. “If you need anything at all, do not hesitate to message.”

Enid looked at her in appreciation, standing up to place a grateful kiss on the side of the brunette's cheek. The brunette flushed at the contact, nodding once before she looked at the girl in Enid’s arms, regarding her with curiosity as small wide eyes stared at her.

“She has your eyes.”
