The sun dipped low over U.A. High, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. The training grounds were quiet, save for the occasional chirp of crickets and the distant hum of city life. Izuku Midoriya, battered but determined, stood alone in the open field, his hero notebook open in one hand, a pencil scribbling furiously in the other. His green hair stuck to his forehead, damp with sweat from hours of quirk training. One For All crackled faintly in his veins, a reminder of the power he was still learning to master.
"Wow, you’re still out here, Midoriya? Don’t you ever take a break?” A cheerful voice cut through the evening calm, bright and bubbly like a burst of sunlight.
Izuku nearly dropped his notebook, spinning around to find Nejire Hado hovering a few feet off the ground, her long blue hair swaying like a cascade of waves. Her vibrant energy seemed to light up the dimming field, her smile as infectious as ever. She was one of the Big Three, a third-year student whose Spiral quirk made her a force of nature—both in battle and in conversation.
"N-Nejire-senpai!” Izuku stammered, his face flushing red. “I-I didn’t hear you coming! Uh, I was just, um, analyzing some new techniques for Superpower—”
Nejire tilted her head, floating closer until she was practically nose-to-nose with him. “You’re always so serious, Midoriya! Don’t you ever just, like, look at the sunset? Or eat a whole bowl of mochi? Or—ooh, ooh, have you ever tried dancing in the middle of a training field just because it feels good?” Her questions came rapid-fire, each one accompanied by a playful twirl in the air.
Izuku blinked, his brain scrambling to keep up. “D-Dancing? I don’t really… I mean, I’m not good at that kind of thing…”
Nejire giggled, landing gracefully on the grass. “Oh, come on! You’re Deku, the guy who punches through walls and saves everyone! If you can do that, you can totally dance with me!” Before he could protest, she grabbed his hands, pulling him into a spin that sent his notebook tumbling into the grass.
“W-Wait, Nejire-senpai!” Izuku yelped, stumbling to keep up as she twirled him around. Her laughter rang out, clear and bright, and despite his flustered state, he couldn’t help but smile. There was something about Nejire—her boundless curiosity, her fearless enthusiasm—that made the world feel lighter, even for someone as perpetually stressed as Izuku.
"Okay, okay, you’re doing great!” Nejire cheered, releasing one of his hands to send a gentle spiral of golden energy into the air. The glowing waves swirled around them, catching the sunset’s light like tiny stars. “See? Isn’t this fun? It’s like we’re in our own little hero movie!”
Izuku’s heart pounded, and not just from the spinning. Nejire’s hand was warm in his, her eyes sparkling with excitement. He’d always admired her—not just as a hero, but as someone who seemed to live every moment to the fullest. “Y-Yeah,” he managed, his voice softer now. “It’s… really nice.”
Nejire stopped spinning, but she didn’t let go of his hand. Instead, she stepped closer, her head tilting as she studied him with that curious gaze of hers. “Hey, Midoriya, why do you push yourself so hard? I mean, you’re already super amazing! Like, you took down that huge villain last month, and you’re always helping everyone. Don’t you ever just… want to be you for a bit?”
Izuku froze, her words hitting deeper than he expected. “I… I don’t know. I just feel like I have to keep going, you know? To live up to everyone’s expectations… to be the hero they believe I can be.”
Nejire’s smile softened, and for once, she didn’t launch into another question. Instead, she squeezed his hand gently. “You’re already that hero, Midoriya. But you don’t have to carry it all by yourself. Heroes help each other, right? Like how Mirio and Tamaki are always there for me. And…” She hesitated, her cheeks tinting pink. “I kinda want to be there for you, too.”
Izuku’s breath caught. “Nejire-senpai… you don’t have to—”
"I want to,” she interrupted, her voice firm but warm. “You’re always so busy saving everyone else, but who’s saving you? I think you’re super cool, Midoriya. Not just because of One For All or all the crazy stuff you do, but because you’re… you. You care so much, and it makes me want to cheer you on even more!”
For once, Izuku didn’t know what to say. His face was burning, his heart racing like he’d just activated Full Cowl. Nejire’s words, her sincerity, her closeness—it was overwhelming in the best way possible. “I… I don’t know what to say,” he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. “But… I’d like that. Having you, um, cheer me on. A-And maybe I could cheer you on, too?”
Nejire’s eyes lit up, and before Izuku could process it, she threw her arms around him in a tight hug. “Deal! We’re gonna be the best hero cheer squad ever!” Her spiral energy flared again, sending a playful burst of light swirling around them, illuminating the field like a private fireworks show.
Izuku laughed, his nerves melting away as he hugged her back, tentative at first, then with more confidence. For the first time in a long while, he felt like he could breathe—just a little lighter, a little freer, with Nejire’s warmth beside him.
As the last rays of sunlight faded, Nejire pulled back, grinning. “Okay, hero, what’s next? More training? More dancing? Or—ooh, how about we grab some ice cream and talk about all the cool quirks we’ve seen? I bet you’ve got a million notes on that!”
Izuku smiled, picking up his notebook from the grass. “Ice cream sounds great. And… maybe you could tell me more about your quirk? I’ve got a few ideas for how you could use it in new ways.”
Nejire’s laugh echoed across the field. “Now that’s the Midoriya I know! Come on, let’s go!” She grabbed his hand again, pulling him toward the dorms, her energy as boundless as ever.
And as they walked, Izuku couldn’t help but think that maybe, just maybe, being a hero didn’t always mean carrying the world alone. Sometimes, it meant sharing a sunset, a laugh, and a promise with someone who made the world feel a little brighter.
