Work Text:
It's a bright, sunny day at the iconic white tent in the English countryside. The grass is verdant, flowers bloom in carefully cultivated gardens, and a gentle breeze rustles the canvas of the tent. Inside, tension and excitement fill the air as two teams prepare for the baking challenge of a lifetime.
"Welcome to the Great British Bake Off: Royal Edition!" Alison Hammond announces, her booming voice filled with excitement. "I can't believe I'm standing here with actual royalty! Me! Alison Hammond!" She fans herself dramatically, causing everyone to burst into laughter.
The camera pans to show two workstations, decorated with Union Jack and American flag bunting. At one stands Prince Henry Fox-Mountchristen-Windsor and his sister Princess Beatrice, both wearing matching navy aprons with "Team Windsor" embroidered in gold. At the other station, Alex Claremont-Diaz and June Claremont-Diaz sport red, white, and blue aprons proclaiming "Team America."
"Today," Alison continues, sidling up to Henry and giving him a playful nudge that nearly sends him stumbling, "we've got siblings against siblings! Royal against presidential! Britain against America! It's like the Revolutionary War all over again, but with cake!"
Henry laughs, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Let's hope it ends more sweetly this time."
"Oh, you!" Alison cackles, slapping her thigh. "He's not just a pretty face, ladies and gentlemen!"
The camera cuts to the VIP viewing area where Ellen Claremont sits beside Queen Catherine, both women looking relaxed and happy. Nora is between them, furiously taking notes.
"Are you writing a political analysis of a baking show?" Ellen asks, peering over at Nora's notebook.
"No," Nora replies seriously. "I'm calculating the statistical probability of Alex dropping something within the first five minutes."
On her other side, Catherine smiles, looking healthier and more at ease than she has in years. "I've got money on Henry burning something."
Philip and Martha sit just behind them, Philip leaning forward with actual interest. "Bea's the dark horse," he comments. "She's been practicing for weeks."
Martha gives him an approving smile and squeezes his hand.
Back in the tent, Alison is explaining the challenge. "Today's signature bake is a family-themed celebration cake! You have two hours to create a masterpiece that represents both your families coming together."
The teams huddle up to discuss strategy.
"We should do something that combines British and American elements," Henry suggests to Beatrice.
"Agreed. Victoria sponge base with peanut butter buttercream?" Beatrice suggests, already reaching for flour.
At the American station, June is trying to rein in Alex's ambitious ideas.
"We cannot make a five-tier cake in two hours, Alex!"
"But it would be so impressive!"
"We need something we can actually finish," June insists. "How about a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting? We can decorate it with fondant flags."
As the baking begins, Alison makes her rounds. She approaches the Windsor station first, where Henry is measuring ingredients with scientific precision while Beatrice cracks eggs with one hand.
"Look at this teamwork!" Alison exclaims. "Princess Beatrice, I didn't know you were such a dab hand at baking!"
Beatrice smiles, a bit shy but pleased. "I find it rather therapeutic, actually."
"And Henry," Alison leans in conspiratorially, "does Alex know how good you are at this? Are you keeping your skills secret as part of your strategy?"
Henry laughs. "If he'd ever let me near the kitchen instead of insisting on making his terrible pancakes, he might have found out."
At the American station, flour has already dusted Alex's curls, making him look prematurely gray.
"June!" Alison gasps dramatically. "What have you done to your poor brother?"
June looks up from her precise measuring. "That was all him. He got excited with the sifter."
Alex grins unrepentantly. "I'm bringing enthusiasm to the process!"
"He's bringing chaos is what he's bringing," June mutters, but she's smiling.
The baking continues, with Alison providing a running commentary that has everyone in stitches. When Henry drops a spoon and lets out an uncharacteristic swear word, Alison's shocked expression and subsequent belly laugh set everyone off.
"I think we just heard a royal first!" she wheezes, fanning herself. "The Queen might need her smelling salts!"
The camera cuts to Catherine, who is actually wiping tears of laughter from her eyes.
As the clock ticks down, tension mounts. Alex and June's red velvet cake is coming together beautifully, with June's steady hand creating intricate fondant decorations. Henry and Beatrice's Victoria sponge is looking equally impressive, with Beatrice revealing a hidden talent for sugar work, creating delicate flowers that combine the national blooms of both countries.
Philip watches with increasing interest. "I had no idea Bea could do that," he murmurs to Martha.
"People can surprise you when you give them the chance," Martha replies gently, and Philip nods, thoughtfully.
With five minutes to go, disaster strikes the American team. Alex, in his enthusiasm to check their cake, bumps the table, sending their intricate fondant White House toppling to the floor.
"No!" June wails.
"The special relationship is in crisis!" Alison declares dramatically.
But Alex, always quick on his feet, grabs some of their remaining fondant and quickly shapes something new.
"Time's up!" Alison calls just as both teams put the finishing touches on their creations.
The judging begins with the Windsor team's cake.
"We've made a Victoria sponge with layers of peanut butter buttercream, strawberry jam, and vanilla cream," Henry explains. "The sugar flowers represent the rose of England and the rose of Texas, intertwined."
"It's about finding sweetness in unexpected combinations," Beatrice adds, with a meaningful glance at her brother.
The judges cut into the cake, revealing perfect, even layers.
"The flavors work surprisingly well together," one judge comments. "The American peanut butter doesn't overwhelm the delicate sponge."
Next is the American team's cake.
"We've made a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting," June explains.
"And after our White House disaster," Alex adds with a grin, "I improvised with this sugar figure of Henry's corgi, David."
Sure enough, atop their cake sits a slightly lopsided but undeniably charming fondant corgi.
"Saving international relations one dog at a time!" Alison laughs.
The judges taste their cake, nodding approvingly at the moist texture and balanced flavor.
After a tense deliberation, Alison gathers everyone for the results.
"The winners of the Great British Bake Off: Royal Edition are..." Alison pauses dramatically, clearly enjoying the moment. "Team Windsor!"
Beatrice lets out an uncharacteristic squeal and hugs Henry, who looks genuinely shocked.
"We actually won something athletic-adjacent!" he exclaims.
The Claremont-Diaz siblings take their defeat graciously, with Alex immediately going to hug Henry.
"I demand a rematch," he whispers in Henry's ear. "Next time, we'll do BBQ."
In the viewing area, Catherine rises to congratulate her children, while Ellen does the same for hers. Philip approaches Henry, looking somewhat awkward but determined.
"Well done," he says, extending his hand. "Your technical skills were impressive."
Henry's surprise is evident, but he takes the offered hand. "Thank you, Pip."
"Perhaps you could teach Martha and me sometime?" Philip suggests, his voice slightly uncertain but genuine.
Henry's smile is warm. "I'd like that."
As the celebration continues, Alison Hammond's infectious laughter rings out once more. "Well, folks, love, family, and cake have saved the special relationship once again! Though if you ask me," she adds with a conspiratorial wink to the camera, "that little corgi deserved its own prize!"
The scene ends with all of them sharing both cakes, royalty and commoners, Americans and Brits, past differences fading in the simple pleasure of breaking bread—or in this case, cake—together
