Perpendicular Lines

Summary:

Hoseok just wanted to have a one-night stand, thank you very much. He had tried, but the last 3 people he slept with with no intention of pursuing a relationship turned into long-term ones, and here he was with nothing under his belt to even be considered slutty. Tragic really, he wanted to be sex-positive and experience physical connection with more people, maybe enjoy life and learn more about his preferences that way, but his attempts somewhat failed each time. And now, he was just too tired and exhausted to deal. He didn’t realize that accidentally becoming a serial monogamist could do that to you. He felt old and not at all as fun as he set out to be.

-----
Or where Hoseok, a magnet for serious relationships, gets tired of it and attempts to have hookups instead. He somehow ends up with a more complicated love life and initiating an intricate link between seven people.

----

Some drama, some trauma, some angst, lots of introspection, some comedy, a little self-denial, and tons of bangtan chaos.

Chapter Text

And so, as ironic as that sounds, he was avoiding going to bars to stop himself from finding a boyfriend again. The last 3 were from there. He seemed to be a magnet for hookups suddenly wanting more than just that. And his heart had a habit of going against this grand plan of seizing the day. He needed to get out of this pattern, now that he’s single again.

It was a dumb predicament to be in, he realized, most people wanting to be in relationships. But he was just so tired of that. He wanted simple this time, easy, fun. His bestfriend Seokjin laughed at him like a maniac when he complained about it, saying that he’s just not hookup material. Whatever, he was determined to prove him wrong.

And so, now he sat at the airport to leave Seoul for LA, taking vacation leaves he almost never uses, determined to connect with more people on a hello-let’s bang-goodbye kind of level.

He eyed a tall guy in matching grey sweats by the coffee counter, carrying a travel bag. Might as well start practicing his flirt game, he decided. From the tall man’s back he could already tell he was well built.

Hoseok proceeded to the counter himself and ordered a vanilla latte, all to better check out the guy. He spied a rainbow pin on his bag, among other pins, and he smiled. When the coffee meant for Mr. Tall guy was placed on the serving counter, Hoseok went fast to pick it up then started to walk away.

“Excuse me, I think that’s my coffee,” he heard from behind him. Hoseok managed an innocent look before he turned around, perplexed expression on his face. Mr. Tall guy had a tentative smile and he was cute in a very endearing kind of way. He motioned towards the coffee in Hoseok’s hand apologetically and then pointed at another one which was just placed on the serving counter.  Hoseok on his best actor streak looked from one coffee to another, faking a dawning realization expression on his face.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I thought this was mine.” He walked back to get his own coffee from the counter before walking back to where Mr. Tall guy was standing to hand him his coffee back. “Let me buy you a new one, I already drank from that,” he said as he took out his wallet from his backpack.

“It’s no problem at all, this is fine,” Mr. Tall guy said, smiling a tiny bit wider this time, hint of dimples showing on both sides of his cheek. Woah, he’s really cute. Hoseok swooned internally.

Mr. Tall guy was staring at him a little more intensely too and Hoseok could swear that he did a quick up and down scan to check him out. Hoseok felt confident, he was always dressed well, just like today. He had on fitted ripped jeans, white turtleneck under a tan cream trench coat, and white sneakers.  He turned around to put his wallet back into his backpack, giving Mr. Tall guy more time to check him out. In a moment of inspiration, he clumsily dropped his wallet, and as he hoped, Mr. Tall guy snatched it from the ground and handed it back to him. He smiled and said his thanks, meeting dragon eyes twinkling, dimples now on full display.  Hoseok heart stuttering wondered briefly how he could keep talking to him. As it turned out, he didn’t need to worry about it.

“I am Kim Namjoon,” Namjoon offered his hand to shake. Hoseok a little surprised took his hand and shook it. “Jung Hoseok,” he said with a sheepish grin.

“So, are you flying to Sanfo?” Namjoon asked, falling in step beside him as they made for the chairs near his boarding gate.

“LA, actually.”

“Ah, too bad, thought we were headed to the same place,” Namjoon said sounding a little disappointed. Hoseok smiled. Since Namjoon’s boarding gate was just the next one, he decided to just stay with Hoseok while they waited for their flights which were both scheduled just a little bit after an hour later.

While they chatted, Hoseok had started to regret choosing to vacation in LA instead of San Francisco, but how could he have known? Namjoon was easy to talk to, very charming, and quite intelligent. Hoseok found himself a little lost in his ramblings and very endeared when Namjoon apologizes after he thought he’s talked too much. Time flew by when they were speaking and all too soon, Hoseok had to say goodbye, his flight boarding earlier than Namjoon’s.

“Well, that’s me,” Hoseok stood up and gathered his bag. Namjoon stood up with him, rubbing his nape with one hand, looking at him with a peculiar expression on his face. As if having made a decision, Namjoon reached out and asked for his phone. He started typing in it. He handed it back showing his mobile number.

“LA is not that far from San Francisco, one hour flight, six hours if you drive, so…,” he paused and looked at him before continuing, “if you find yourself in San Francisco, I’d like to show you around.”

Hoseok beamed, flattered. He didn't think he’d ever see him again and that hurt his heart a bit. Also making a decision, he reached up and pulled Namjoon down for a kiss. Despite his initial surprise, Namjoon kissed him back, sweet, and lingering. When they parted, Hoseok walked towards his gate, leaving Namjoon standing there without a second glance.

Hoseok thought about Namjoon during his flight, considered meeting him an actual win to be counted towards his goal of connecting with people on a casual level. It was not a one-night stand per se but it’s a start. There was no chance for Namjoon to ever consider him as a potential boyfriend because their meeting was brief and their paths perpendicular. He decided that’s the way to do it if he were to achieve his goal. Perpendicular lines, meet people once then go their separate ways. Simple. Content with this conclusion, he slept the rest of his flight.
