Work Text:

The tree was set up while Nathan was asleep. Clark could have had the whole thing up in less than a second if he supersped, but it was the baby’s first Christmas, so Lex and Clark put on every ornament on the tree with care and took videos. The train that used to circle the Kent family tree now circled the Kent-Luthor family tree.

Nathan, now ten months old, was as large as Clark was when Jonathan and Martha found him or he found Jonathan and Martha as Clark’s parents liked to say. That made Clark sixteen, not eighteen as previously believed. Since Nathan was walking, none of the low-lying Christmas balls were safe. Watching Nathan break the glass Christmas balls made Clark think of his whole childhood differently. He suddenly went from the oldest child in his kindergarten class to the youngest. An odd thought!

Nathan couldn’t get cut by the glass and Clark or the maid would clean up the mess later. Right now the chards of green, red, gold and blue glass against the hard wood floor caught the light in a festive way. Also Lex could afford to buy more Christmas tree ornaments. Clark never really thought all that much about the baby’s first Christmas because being a pregnant teenager alien occupied too much of his thoughts. Why set up a track and toy train when all the child wanted to do was break Christmas balls?

When Lex entered the living room, Clark took Nathan into his arms. “Honey, let’s watch the train go,” said Clark. “Chugga, chugga, choo-choo.”

Nathan squirmed in Clark’s arms.

“Let him,” said Lex. “I can buy more.”

“I don’t want you getting hurt,” said Clark.

“I like having you home.” After pushing aside the broke glass, Lex sat on the floor Clark and kissed his cheek.

Clark pushed aside more of the glass, not wanted Lex to get hurt. “I come home almost every night.”

“And fly off to school in the morning. It’s nice - all three of us being together. Nathan will have both his fathers until the end of January.” Lex put a hand in Clark’s hair. “I may not want you to go back.”

“We should take Nathan to see Grandma and Granddad.”

“Later. Let me enjoy my family.” Lex put an arm around Clark.

Clark kissed Lex on the lips. The cheek wasn’t enough. After Clark put his arms around Lex the familiar crash said that Nathan had returned to breaking Christmas tree ornaments. The maid could clean the mess up later. It was harmless fun. Clark kept one ear on Nathan as he kissed his husband. They would see the folks much later.
