Chapter Text

The rhythmic ticking of the clock in Jayce’s lab was comforting, like the heartbeat of the world that moved outside. The room was filled with a scent of freshly brewed coffee, and a faint blue light flickered from an enchanted azure gemstone on his desk, casting an ethereal glow over the workbench where Jayce meticulously adjusted the gears of a delicate device meant to hold the gemstone. The earthy coffee aroma mingled with the scent of oil and arcane dust, remnants of the countless experiments he’d performed. He was lost in his work, as always. There was something almost meditative about the process, the way the intricate magic pulsed off the gemstones, combining the scientific with the arcane.

The soft hum of Jayce's lab was a comfort to him. It was a place where he could lose himself in his work, a sanctuary from the bustling academic halls of the university. But today, his mind was anything but calm.

The progress on his latest project had stalled. Again. The materials, expensive and rare as they were, were starting to run out. Every attempt to secure funding had been met with a cold rejection from the potential sponsors. No one wanted to take a chance on his ideas. Magic and technology, fused together? The concept was so outlandish, so unheard of, that few believed it was possible. The wealthy nobles and influential politicians who’d once praised his genius now dismissed him as an unrealistic dreamer.

Jayce’s hand faltered as he tightened a screw on the device, his mind wandering. For months, his attempts to bridge the gap between magic and technology had yielded nothing but failure after failure. His research should have been groundbreaking, should have been revolutionary. But without the right resources, without the proper backing, all he could do was tinker in the dark.

He sighed heavily, glancing over to the pile of letters stacked on the corner of his desk… rejection letters from various academic sponsors and potential investors. All of them politely stating that his work, while impressive in theory, was far too untested. Too unpredictable. Dangerous.

"Maybe they’re right," he muttered to himself, "Maybe I am just wasting my time."

A soft, mechanical buzz interrupted his thoughts, and Jayce's eyes snapped back to the contraption on his desk. It had made progress! Just a flicker of light from the gemstone embedded within the brass casing. A spark, then a faint glow. He’d seen similar results before, only to have them dissipate before he could fully harness the magic. But this… this was something different. He could feel it.

"If only I could secure more materials", Jayce thought bitterly. If only someone would fund this, believe in it. But no one wants to take a chance, "I need more supplies, and I need them fast. Otherwise, this is all for nothing."

A sudden crash outside his window snapped him out of his thoughts. He tensed, pushing himself up from the desk on instinct. It wasn’t unusual to hear commotion on the streets below, but this was different. He heard shouting, followed by the pounding of dozens of hurried footsteps.

Without hesitation, he threw open the door and sprinted toward the Academy's front exit. Outside, chaos consumed the streets. A group of armoured enforcers barked orders as they clashed with a group of Zaunites in the street. Thick smoke from crowd-control grenades filled the air. Explosions echoed in the streets, shaking the ground beneath his feet. The air was thick with the scent of smoke, and he could make out the blurry shapes of several enforcers chasing after criminals. Was this a robbery? An assault? A riot?

Jayce barely noticed Caitlyn, his best friend and an enforcer sheriff, rushing past him, her face set in determination.

"Jayce!" Caitlyn shouted, but before she could say anything more, her voice was drowned out by the noise of the street, "Stay inside! It’s too dangerous!"

Jayce hesitated, watching as the chaos escalated, the enforcers struggling to regain control of the situation. Yet, amid the frenzy, something – no, someone, stood out.

His eyes narrowed as he saw someone who didn’t belong in the chaos. A solitary figure standing on a distant rooftop, his silhouette framed by the evening sun. Even from a distance, the figure radiated an aura of effortless elegance. A flowing burgundy shirt and a dark cane in his hand painted the image of a man in command. He was the kind of person who didn’t move with the urgency of a fleeing criminal, but with the ease of someone who knew they were untouchable. Everything about him emanated authority, confidence, and… something more. It was as if the city itself yielded around his presence.

Jayce’s breath caught in his throat. The man on the rooftop... he was looking right at him.

In that moment, time seemed to stretch. Jayce’s heart skipped a beat. A fleeting sense of recognition stirred deep within him, though he couldn’t explain why. Jayce could feel the weight of the gaze, sharp and calculating. It was just him and that person, locked in a silent, unspoken exchange. It was as though the stranger knew him, knew exactly who he was. It sent a chill through him.

Then, without warning, the ground beneath him trembled as a thick cloud of smoke billowed up from the open sewer grates at the edge of the street. The smoke surged upward, swirling and twisting into the air. The thick, acrid plume burned Jayce’s throat. He staggered back, instinctively covering his face with his arm. The smoke swallowed everything, thickening the already chaotic scene around him. He coughed, trying to clear his lungs, but the cloud was dense and stubborn.

When the smoke began to dissipate, Jayce’s heart stopped. The figure on the rooftop was gone.

Jayce stood frozen, his mind scrambling to make sense of it all. The enforcers had not noticed the strange disappearance, they were still focused on their own chase. Yet Jayce could not shake the feeling that what he had witnessed was more than mere coincidence.

A strange sensation began to stir in Jayce, deep in the pit of his stomach. His pulse pounded in his ears, and his thoughts swirled in confusion. Who was that man? What had he been doing there? Why had he looked directly at him?

"Jayce!"

The sudden shout broke his trance. He turned sharply towards the person calling him.

Caitlyn was walking towards him, her form a striking presence even amid the chaos. She was dressed in her standard enforcer uniform, her rifle in her arms. Her sharp eyes swept over the scene around them, assessing it with practiced precision. But when she saw him, her stern expression softened just for a second.

"Jayce, what the hell are you doing out here?" she called, her voice cutting through the noise, "It’s not safe!"

Jayce took a few steps toward her, his thoughts still racing. He couldn’t help but feel an odd sense of relief seeing her, Caitlyn had been his closest friend since childhood. He trusted her completely, even though their worlds seemed to be moving in different directions. She’d joined the enforcers years ago, rising through their ranks with determination and skill. Meanwhile, Jayce had immersed himself in academic pursuits.

"I… I saw something," Jayce muttered, still trying to process everything, "A person on the rooftop. He was watching me, Cait. I swear it."

Caitlyn’s eyes flickered to the rooftop, her gaze sharp, scanning every inch of it, though it had long since been empty. She said nothing, her expression unreadable. Then, she exhaled slowly, her body language tightening slightly.

"Up there?" she asked, her voice casual but with an edge that betrayed her concern, "In the middle of all this chaos?"

Jayce nodded, still a little shaken, "Yes. And he looked right at me. Like he was searching for me."

Caitlyn’s lips tightened into a thin line. She took a step forward, lowering her voice so only Jayce could hear, her tone steady, "Listen to me, Jayce," she said softly, "You didn’t see anything. The smoke… the criminals… It’s all a mess down here, and it’s easy to imagine things when everything’s this chaotic."

Jayce stared at her in disbelief, but Caitlyn wasn’t meeting his eyes. She was already glancing over her shoulder, as if to remind herself that the real chaos was still unfolding. Her posture stiffened slightly, and she cleared her throat, "Focus on getting out of the way. I’ll handle it from here. Just stay safe, okay?"

The coldness in her voice was enough to make Jayce pause for a moment. She knew something. He could tell by the way her words were so carefully chosen. Caitlyn was hiding something. She knew exactly who the figure on the rooftop was, but she wasn’t going to tell him.

"Cait," Jayce said, "You’re not telling me everything, are you?"

She looked at him briefly, and he caught a hint of something in her eyes – hesitation, maybe even pity. But it was gone in an instant.

"Not now, Jayce," she said, her voice firm, "Some things are better left unsaid. Go home. Rest."

With that, she turned back towards the chaos, rejoining her enforcers. Jayce stood there, his heart racing, knowing full well that this was far from over. Caitlyn knew more than she was letting on, and somehow, Jayce felt like he was already entangled in something much bigger than he could have imagined.

As Jayce turned to head back to the lab, his mind processing the events that had just unfolded, a voice interrupted his thoughts.

"You’re looking for answers, aren’t you, kid?"

Jayce looked to his left, where a man in a tattered coat was leaning against a wall of an alleyway, just a few feet away. It was obvious he was a Zaunite, one that somehow managed to slip the enforcers' attention. He nodded for him to follow, and disappeared into the alleyway. Jayce followed the man, his curiousity overruling the common sense that he probably should not follow random strangers.

"I know what you saw," the man continued, his eyes glinting with amusement, "The figure you were staring at. Your friend was right, it's best you don't ask too many questions about it."

"Who are you?" Jayce asked warily.

The man smiled, a thin, knowing grin that didn’t reach his eyes, "That information isn't important to you right now. What you want to know is who that man was."

Jayce narrowed his gaze. This was no ordinary street rat or curious bystander. His mind was racing. The figure on the rooftop, Caitlyn’s cryptic words, and now this stranger? Something was pulling at him, some force that felt bigger than he could even begin to comprehend.

"What do you know about him?" Jayce asked, trying to hide the impatience in his tone.

The man’s smile faltered slightly, and he leaned in closer, his voice dropping low, as though he didn’t want anyone to overhear, "You’re not the one to follow your enforcer friend's advice? Fine, I’ll tell you. But nothing’s free in this world, kid. Especially not information."

Jayce’s brow furrowed, "I’m listening."

The man’s eyes sparkled, amused by Jayce’s urgency, "Very well," he said, "The person you saw on that rooftop? That was Viktor."

Jayce’s heart skipped. The name sent a rush of images through his mind – rumors, whispers, stories he’d overheard in the hushed conversations between politicians.

Viktor. The chem-baron. The man who was feared even by the most ruthless of his peers. Jayce had heard tales of him, but nothing concrete. Nothing that would explain why he would have been so bold as to appear in front of him, a simple academy researcher.

"Viktor?" Jayce repeated, his voice barely above a whisper, "You’re saying he was watching me?"

The man nodded slowly, the grin returning, this time darker, "Viktor is a powerful man. Taught the ways of the Undercity by Glasc herself. That manor of his down in the Undercity? It’s a fortress. No one goes in or out without his say-so. Not even other chem-barons dare cross him. They show him respect, or they pay the price."

Jayce swallowed, the weight of the words sinking in. His curiosity had only been deepened, but now it was tinged with fear. He's heard the stories, Viktor was dangerous. And somehow, Jayce had caught his eye.

"And why would Viktor be interested in me?" Jayce’s voice was quieter now, his thoughts scrambling. He had heard rumors of Viktor’s ability to observe and know things from the shadows, but him? A mere inventor, struggling with basic research grants?

The man gave a low chuckle, "Why does anyone do anything in this city? Power. Influence. Information. Viktor doesn’t care about you, kid. He cares about what you can do. And from what I hear, you’ve got your own tricks with those gadgets of yours. Gadgets that you need materials for."

Jayce’s pulse quickened. He had no idea how this man knew about his research. Was everyone in the Undercity watching him, too?

"What do you want from me?", he pressed.

"Me? Nothing," The man shrugged, "I owed him a favour. You’ve got something Viktor might want, even if you don’t know it yet. He'll be pleased to hear I sent you his way."

Jayce clenched his jaw. The idea of owing a favour to someone like Viktor terrified him, but there was a voice inside his mind telling him this just might be what he needed. He had a purpose in this world, a mission to push the boundaries of his research, to unlock secrets of magic and tech that could change the course of science itself. But to do that, he needed access to materials, materials that were tightly controlled, heavily guarded… and often illegal. What better place to turn than to a man like Viktor? The very thought of asking a chem-baron for help, especially for something so dangerous, chilled him. But Jayce also couldn’t ignore the truth, his research could never move forward without Viktor’s resources. If Viktor controlled the black market of magic and technology, then Jayce would have to find a way to get into his good graces.

Jayce took a deep breath, "And when am I supposed to pay for the favour?"

The man’s eyes narrowed, "You pay it when the time comes. But if you’re serious about reaching Viktor, be prepared to give more than just your curiosity. He doesn’t do favors without a price."

Jayce hesitated only for a second, knowing the cost of Viktor's aid might be steep. But it was the only path forward, the only way to get the resources he needed. He needed Viktor’s help for his research, and to do that, he would have to meet the man himself.

"Alright," Jayce said finally, lowering his voice, "I’ll pay the price."

The man’s grin widened, satisfaction radiating from him, "Good. Then here’s your lead."

He reached into the pocket of his coat, producing a small, folded piece of paper, scribbled with markings. He handed it to Jayce, who took it cautiously. As Jayce’s fingers brushed the paper, he felt a subtle shift in the air, as though the universe was telling him there is no return from his choice.

"This will lead you to Viktor’s manor," the man said, his voice low and deliberate, "But remember, it’s not an easy place to get to. And Viktor doesn’t take kindly to people who try to take from him without paying the cost. Be careful what you ask for, Talis. You might get more than you bargained for."

Jayce folded the map carefully, tucking it into his coat. The weight of what he was about to do pressed down on him, there was no turning back now.

"I’ll remember that," Jayce said quietly.

The man nodded once, "Good luck, kid," he said, before turning and fading into the crowd, disappearing into the smoke that was still swirling through the streets.

Jayce stood there for a moment, the map burning a hole in his pocket, his mind racing. He finally had an opportunity to advance his research, presented in a form of a chem-baron that seemed to have an interest in him. Maybe he really was in over his head. But as he weighed his options… Whatever Viktor wanted from him, whatever price he would demand, it would be worth it. This was the only way forward.

A strange calm settled over him as he made his decision.

If he wanted to continue his work, if he wanted to succeed where so many others had failed, he’d have to take risks.

With a final glance toward the rooftops, where Viktor had once stood, Jayce turned and headed back toward his lab.

The road ahead would be darker than anything he’d ever imagined.
