Chapter Text
Princess Adrienne Wrynn leaned against the edge of her balcony, staring out over the sprawling city of Stormwind. The sunlight cast a warm glow over the cobbled streets below, where soldiers marched in formation, merchants peddled their wares, and children played by the fountains. The world moved on without her, but in her heart, she felt a deep restlessness. She was twenty years old now, but there was something missing in her life, a curiosity she had never dared to explore; one that seemed so simple and yet impossible for someone like her.
A kiss.
The thought lingered like a soft breath in her mind. She had seen others exchange kisses; her father with her mother, Lady Jaina with Prince Arthas, and Lord Turalyon with Lady Alleria. A kiss was supposed to be tender, intimate, a moment of connection between two souls. But Adrienne had never experienced it. Never had she felt the touch of a man’s lips against hers, never known what it was like to have the warmth of someone's embrace stir something deep within her.
She could have waited; perhaps someday, a suitor would come. One of noble blood, someone who would ask for her hand in marriage. But that seemed so far off, and Adrienne's yearning was immediate. It was a curiosity that ate at her, one that needed to be satisfied.
There was only one man she trusted enough to help her understand it - the one man who had been beside her through thick and thin, the one whose loyalty was undeniable - Mathias Shaw, the Spymaster of Stormwind.
He had served her family for years, his sharp mind and dangerous reputation making him both an invaluable ally and a shadowy presence in the court. Adrienne had never seen him as anything other than the quiet, stoic man who kept the secrets of the kingdom. But that was before she had grown into the woman she was today. Now, she saw something else in him - a confidence that sparked an unspoken desire deep within her.
But how to ask him? How to explain the unexplainable?
She took a deep breath in, mustering her resolve. She would do it. She would ask him. Tonight.
Exhaling, Adrienne stood up and headed towards the door that led to the interior of the castle. She would find him; she already had a pretty good idea of where he would be.
Mathias Shaw was in his office, pouring over recent reports delivered by the spies of SI:7. His office was dark, lit only by a flickering candle on his desk. His fingers ran over the parchment with methodical precision, as though the world outside of his work didn’t exist. When the door creaked open, he didn’t look up.
“I thought you would be elsewhere, Your Highness,” Shaw's voice was as smooth and composed as always, but there was a slight edge to it that made her pause. His blue eyes, sharp and calculating, finally lifted to meet hers.
Adrienne stood tall, but her breath caught in her throat. There was something intense she hadn’t seen before in his gaze.
“I need your help,” she said, her voice steady despite the nerves running through her veins. She was a princess, trained in diplomacy and leadership, but this was different. This was personal.
Shaw set the papers aside and leaned back in his chair, watching her. “With what, exactly?”
Adrienne hesitated for just a moment, her cheeks tinged with the faintest of blushes. She hadn’t prepared herself for this part. She decided it was best to just get it over with. “I... want to learn what it’s like to be kissed. I want to know what it feels like."
Shaw's brow raised, and for a brief moment, there was silence between them. He didn’t laugh, nor did he seem shocked. He simply studied her, his fingers tapping on the edge of his desk, his expression unreadable.
“Is that so?” he asked, his tone neutral, though a flicker of something darker passed over his features. "And what makes you think I’m the one to teach you?"
Adrienne met his gaze, her heart pounding in her chest. "Because you are the only man I trust outside of my family. You know me, and I know you will be discreet."
The Spymaster didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he leaned forward, his eyes narrowing, considering her request. "You understand the implications of this, Princess? A kiss is not simply a gesture. It is an exchange, a bond, something that cannot be undone."
“I understand,” Adrienne said quickly, her voice firm. “I want to know. Please, Mathias. I will do anything you ask.”
His lips twitched into a small, almost imperceptible smirk. “Anything?” He leaned back in his chair, a glimmer of something dangerous in his eyes.
Adrienne’s breath caught in her throat, feeling like she was a rabbit caught in a trap, but she stood her ground. “Anything.”
Shaw rose from his chair, closing the distance between them with slow, deliberate steps. He was tall, imposing, and his presence filled the room with an undeniable intensity. Adrienne could feel the warmth of his body so close to hers, and her heart fluttered in her chest, a strange mix of anticipation and uncertainty building inside her.
“You’re sure about this?” Shaw asked, his voice low and smooth, just the right amount of gravel that made her pulse race.
“Yes,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
A smirk curved his lips as he leaned in closer, his breath brushing against her ear. “Very well,” he said. “But we will do this on my terms.”
Adrienne felt a rush of heat sweep through her as his hand brushed against hers; it was but a fleeting touch, and yet it was enough to send a jolt through her. She swallowed hard, trying to steady herself as his eyes flickered down to her lips, then back up to her face, gauging her reaction.
Shaw stepped back slightly, his gaze never leaving hers. “A kiss,” he murmured, “is far more than lips meeting. It is touch. It is proximity. It is anticipation.”
Before she could respond, Shaw’s hand reached out, his fingers grazing lightly against her waist. Adrienne’s breath hitched at the unexpected contact. He didn’t move away. Instead, his hand lingered, the warmth of his fingers seeping through the fabric of her gown. Her pulse quickened.
“Tell me, Princess,” Shaw whispered, his voice barely audible in the dim room, “What does this feel like?”
His fingers slid slowly up her back, tracing the curve of her spine, sending shivers through her body. Adrienne could barely think, her senses overwhelmed by the intensity of his touch.
“Does it make you curious?” he murmured, his breath warm against her ear.
She nodded, though her mind was swirling. “Yes.”
His lips brushed against her ear, his voice a teasing whisper. “Then let’s see how far that curiosity can take you.”
And with that, his fingers lingered on her neck, tracing the delicate line of her jaw before he finally drew back, leaving her breathless, aching, and more unsure than she had ever been. It was as though she had been teased with the very idea of a kiss, yet it remained just out of reach, and the fire that had started deep within her only burned brighter.
Shaw gave her a lingering look, his eyes glinting with amusement. “Curiosity is a dangerous thing, Princess,” he said softly. “But we’ll take it one step at a time. On my terms.”
Adrienne’s pulse raced as she stood there, her thoughts spinning, the tantalising tingle of his touch leaving her longing for more. She hadn’t prepared for this, not at all, but somehow, she couldn’t wait for the next lesson.
The following days felt like they stretched on endlessly. Adrienne would see Shaw in the halls or in court, and though he would give her his usual quiet nod, there was always a hidden understanding between them. She was impatient; she wanted to know what more could come of their arrangement. Every glance, every word between them seemed to hold an unspoken tension, but nothing more.
It was on the fifth day since their initial conversation that he finally called for her. A simple note, sealed with the insignia of his office, was delivered to her chambers that morning.
Come to my office at dusk. We begin.
Adrienne’s heart raced the moment she read the words. It was finally time. She prepared herself carefully, choosing a soft blue gown, something simple but elegant, with a neckline that exposed just enough of her skin to make her feel vulnerable. She didn’t know what to expect, but she had learned one thing already - nothing with Mathias Shaw would ever be what she expected.
As dusk settled over Stormwind, Adrienne made her way to Shaw’s office, her footsteps echoing softly in the stone corridors. She was nervous, but there was also a deep sense of excitement stirring in her chest. The door opened quietly, and there he stood, as always, a shadow in the room, his form almost blending into the dim light of the candlelit office.
He didn’t greet her with his usual stoicism this time. Instead, his eyes locked onto hers with a quiet intensity that made her feel both seen and unseen at the same time.
“Princess,” Shaw said, his voice smooth and controlled. “Are you ready?”
Adrienne swallowed, nodding slowly. She had no idea what she was ready for, but she was committed now.
“Come here,” Shaw ordered, his tone low, just enough to send a shiver down her spine.
She obeyed without thinking, crossing the distance between them, her heart hammering in her chest. As she drew near, he stepped aside to allow her to enter fully, his eyes following her every movement. He didn’t touch her yet, but the space between them was thick with unspoken promises. He closed the door behind her, the sound of the lock turning ran a shiver down her spine.
“Let’s begin, then.” Shaw murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.
Adrienne stood still, waiting for him to make the next move. The silence between them was oppressive, and yet it only made her more aware of the tension building in the room. She could hear the steady beat of her own heart as if it was the only sound that mattered.
Shaw moved toward her, his steps slow and deliberate. He raised his hand, just as he had done before, and for a fleeting moment, she thought he would touch her again. But this time, his fingers hovered in the air near her face, barely grazing her cheek; a whisper of contact that was too brief to feel anything solid, but enough to send a thrill down her spine.
“This is what I meant, Princess.” Shaw murmured, his voice low and hypnotic. “Touch isn’t always about how much skin is pressed together. It’s about anticipation, tension, and what’s left unsaid.”
Adrienne’s breath hitched as his fingers brushed against her collarbone. She couldn’t help but lean slightly into the touch, her eyes fluttering shut at the sensation of his skin against hers. His fingers moved slowly, like a slow burn, as though he were savouring the feel of her. It was maddening.
Shaw’s voice came again, soft, teasing, and close to her ear. “Tell me, Princess, how does it feel?”
Adrienne opened her eyes to find him watching her closely, his gaze filled with something dark and hungry. She could barely speak, her thoughts too clouded by the overwhelming heat of his touch. “It… It feels strange. But... good.”
Shaw smirked, his fingers now tracing the back of her neck, sending a fresh wave of heat through her body. “Good. That’s the point. To make you aware of every inch of your skin, every sensation. To make you want more.”
She could feel the pull of his proximity now, her pulse racing, her mouth slightly open, breaths shallow. She wanted to reach for him, to close the distance, but she didn’t dare. Not yet. She had no idea what he would do next, and part of her was afraid of what might happen if she moved even an inch.
He moved again, this time shifting slightly behind her, his fingers brushing against her waist, just beneath the curve of her ribs. Adrienne gasped, her body jerking at the unexpected contact. She hadn’t realised how sensitive she was, how much a single touch could make her whole body hum with awareness.
“I wonder,” Shaw whispered into her ear, his breath warm and intimate, “how long it will take for you to beg for more.”
Adrienne’s face flushed, her thoughts scattered by the intensity of his presence. She felt vulnerable, exposed, yet the fire inside her burned brighter than ever. She had agreed to this - to him - but the desire was becoming something she hadn’t anticipated. It was more than a curiosity now; it was a need. She needed him to keep touching her, to create more of this feeling that was growing inside her.
Shaw stepped away suddenly, breaking the spell. Adrienne blinked, confused. She looked at him, her chest heaving with short breaths, wanting.
“Next time,” he said, his voice cool and calculating again, “we’ll take it further. For now, though, you’ve learned enough to know the power of touch. And that’s all we need, for now.”
Adrienne could only nod, unable to find words to express how she felt; how torn she was between frustration and desire. Her body ached for more, but she also knew there was no turning back now.
Shaw’s smirk returned as he stepped back, and his eyes glinted with something dark, something that told her this was only the beginning.
“You’re learning, Princess,” he said, his voice dripping with amusement. “And I think you’re going to enjoy this game.”
She was already hooked. And she knew, deep down, she would follow him wherever this path led.
