That's one way to get a date

Summary:

Toge never did deal well with spiders

Notes:

I wasn't sure how to convey text to voice so I just used regular speech quotes :)

Work Text:

Toge was no maiden. He didn’t want to be a stereotype. He was not the kind of omega who needed the constant attention of some stupid “thinking with the wrong head” alpha or the kind of person who couldn’t do anything for themselves. So when he found a big hairy ugly spider in the bathroom of his apartment one morning before class, he definitely did not freak out and go running, ready to torch the whole place down. And he absolutely did not immediately video call Maki for assistance.

“Toge, what the hell do you want me to do? There’s no way I’m driving an hour just to kill a spider. You’re the one who wanted to go to school out there, have a change of scenery. You kill it.”

Toge hastily looked towards the bathroom one more time as if the monster spider was going to come out and stalk him like the Terminator before ending his life. He propped the phone against his dishrack in the kitchen to Sign.

Maki, please! It’s so huge and you know I would never ask you if it wasn’t important! I hate them so much, why do you hate me?

By the way Maki was glaring at him, she wasn’t going to budge. “I don’t hate you, stop being a crybaby. Whack it with a shoe or something. I don’t know.”

The idea of spider guts on his beautiful shoes alarmed Toge.

“Look, Nobara’s going to be out of the bedroom soon and you know how she likes to leave the second she’s ready. You got this.”

If it happened to Nobara you’d go running.

“She’d also wear that cute pink outfit I got her from Victoria’s Secret as a reward after so..”

“ -What was that, Maki?”

Toge watched one of the rare moments where Maki looked slightly panicked as she turned her head towards the bedroom. “Nothing!” She turned back to the phone. “Look, I’m sorry there’s a spider in your bathroom, call the building maintenance guy or something. I have to go.”

Not waiting for an answer, Maki promptly hung up the phone.

Toge pouted, sending a spam of sad emoji’s to Maki before tucking away his phone. He approached his shoe collection and picked up a heavy winter boot that was more for weather than style and figured he could always buy a new pair and burn that one.

He slowly made his way back into the bathroom armed and ready, trying to keep his hands from shaking too badly. Upon a quick survey around though, the spider was nowhere to be seen and dread filled his entire being. If it was anything else; a silverfish, a roach, heck even a mouse, he would just call an exterminator and work around the issue while they got here. But a spider? No thank you. Why a spider? What did he do in a past life to be put into this position of torture? If he couldn’t burn the place down because he wasn’t made for jail, he would have to move out. Those were the only two logical choices for him.

It was then, as Toge weighed the pros and cons of moving out, that he felt a tickling sensation on his bare foot and immediately knew with the way every strand of hair on his body stood on end that it was something he did not want to see. He slowly looked down, and to his horror, saw the nearly four inch eight legged demon crawling its way up his ankle.

If he was able to, the whole building would have heard the way he screamed.

He shot his leg outward and bashed it painfully into the cabinet door, not meaning to, shaking it in desperation before he bolted through the apartment mindlessly, tears threatening to run down his face. He flung the front door open and ran out into the hallway, shaking his leg over and over until he realized the dark blob spawn of Satan had fallen off during his escape and he fell against the wall across the way in relief.

What the fuck was he going to do now?

He was stuck in the hallway in nothing but his pajama shorts and a baggy oversized sweater, looking as though he had just escaped a murderer. (Toge thought bitterly that he basically had, that spider was big enough to sink its fangs in and poison him in seconds then eat his mushed up insides before anyone thought to check up on him!). And there was no way in hell that he was ever going back into that place, ever.

Just when he was about to resign himself to his new life living on the doorstep of his own goddamn apartment, he felt the wall moving behind him, not realizing he was leaning against an actual door and practically losing his balance. Firm hands caught him before that happened and Toge turned to see his incredibly attractive alpha neighbor, whom he had only spoken to once before, staring back at him.

“Hi, are you okay? I heard you collapse against my door and you looked like something scared you. Are you hurt? Is there something wrong in your home?”

The alpha, Yuuta was his name, had such a gentle, heady voice. He stepped closer to him, Toge sensing that his instincts were probably telling him to protect and comfort the omega in front of him. Toge tried to calm himself and fumbled with his phone before typing out an answer that voiced back to him.

“I think I’m okay, I’m not hurt.”

Toge tried his best to look less like he was about to collapse so there was some level of decorum while his phone continued to read back to his neighbor.

“There’s a huge spider in my apartment and I’m really afraid of them. It crawled on me and now I don’t know where it is so I can’t go back in there but I have class soon, I’m going to be late!”

“Hey, it’s going to be fine.” Yuuta assured. “If you’d like, I could go kill it for you? Would that be okay?” He asked as Toge watched his hands lift as if to touch him but they aborted their mission half way and both arms fell to his side again.

The viciously independent side of him that hated being so needy wanted to wave it off, he could figure out a way, maybe call the building manager and not get laughed at. Anything to show he didn’t need his alpha neighbor to take care of his problem for him, but the arachnophobe part of him, the very loud opinionated part of him attached to that wanted nothing more than to have Yuuta squish that stupid thing to death.

So it was decided and Toge nodded, batting his lashes for extra measure because he really wanted that horrible spider gone.

Yuuta smiled and nodded, a hand resting briefly on Toge’s arm in assurance. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure you’re not late today.”

He moved past him, peeked inside the apartment, and when he realized that Toge wasn’t following him, he chuckled a bit. “You’re really not going in until that spider is gone, huh?”

Toge narrowed his eyes and immediately shook his head, crossing his arms in a huff and planted his feet at where he stood. He didn’t care if he looked ridiculous. He could be dead right now if he was inside there, his insides melting away. No thanks. Yuuta let out another (stupidly cute) laugh, and nodded in understanding before he made his way in.

“Oh my, you’re right. That is big!” Toge heard from inside his apartment, followed by a loud heavy thud, followed by another in quick succession. Straining to listen to anything more, he soon heard the toilet flush and a moment later Yuuta came back out into the hallway.

“Alright, you’re safe now. I got the spider and flushed it away. There’s no signs of it ever being there, I made sure.”

Toge smiled and hoped he wasn’t teasing him for his fear. Yuuta didn’t seem to be and it wasn’t like he was giving him reason to think otherwise. Toge’s omega instincts were insanely pleased.

Thank you so much, I owe you. Toge signed, forgetting that Yuuta didn’t know Sign when his face suddenly shifted to confusion.

“I think you said, thank you?”

Toge froze, eyes wide in surprise before he nodded happily, pointing to him. You know Sign?

Squinting again, it took Yuuta a few seconds before he straightened up again. “A little, I’m learning. If that was you asking if I knew.”

Toge couldn't help but beam and gave him a thumbs up which gave him back Yuuta’s handsome smile.

“My name’s Yuuta by the way, you’re Toge..right?” He suddenly seemed a bit nervous. “It was mentioned when your friend, the girl with the glasses, was calling it out a few times in the hallway. It would be nice to finally put a name properly to your face, especially if you need more help with any further spider invasions, or other bugs.”

Toge nodded but he wanted to make sure Yuuta knew he wasn’t like this always, just with spiders. Pulling out his phone he typed it out so they were clear.

“I want to make sure you know it’s only spiders that get to me, I’m not helpless or anything. I know some omegas tend to be and that’s nice for them but not me. I can take care of things on my own most of the time.”

Yuuta nodded, comprehending his boundaries. “I understand. I’m sorry spiders mess with your plans to be fully independent but I’m always around if you need help or assistance with them.” He paused, contemplating something before he decided to continue with his brows coming in slightly. “I also wouldn’t mind seeing you more often, if you’d like to as well. With or without spider involvement- I’m sorry if I sound weird..”

Toge felt his face flush. Usually when an alpha hit on him, he flirted back and went on with his day with no expectation of anything but maybe a one off coffee or boba date, a one night stand or he escaped the room in a hurry. It had always been that way, never in the mood to really get serious. But there was something about Yuuta, more so than other alphas he had met. He seemed genuinely nice, in a way that caught his attention differently, and he was obviously concerned with Toge’s comfort. Instead of trying to hide any kind of dismay on his independence or hell, even showing disdain for it like many did, he was instead respectful. Plus he went into his apartment and killed the biggest spider Toge had ever seen in his life, one that tried to murder him! It also didn’t help that Yuuta’s scent was so captivating, yet not very overpowering or invasive; it reminded him of pine trees that basked in warm sunlight with an undercurrent of fresh cinnamon dusting the edges. It made Toge feel safe and homely, and he wanted to wrap himself around it like a blanket.

Toge thought about what to type before he inputted some words into his phone and hit the voice relay.

“I think that would be nice, Yuuta. You really did help me with that problem and you seem very sweet.”

It was now Yuuta’s turn to flush, the red growing up the sides of his neck and a hand came up to rub at it awkwardly. “Oh I don’t think I did anything different that someone else wouldn’t have done to help you. But thank you for the vote of confidence. I’m sorry it took a spider for me to get my confidence up to speak to you.”

Toge wanted to say more but his eyes shifted to the time and he almost panicked. He flipped his phone around to show Yuuta who stared dumbly for a moment before it dawned on him.

“Class?”

Toge nodded hurriedly and rushed back into his apartment, slammed the door behind him, froze halfway towards his bedroom, then made his way back into the hall. Now that the anxiety and fear had worn off, he was feeling his usual confident self again. Thankfully Yuuta was still standing there and he focused on typing out his message quickly.

“I should be back around 3. Do you think going out for dinner at around 5pm would be okay? Or is it too early for you?”

Yuuta smiled and nodded. “Dinner at 5 is perfect.”

The urgency to get a move on grew and Toge flashed him a thumbs up and a smile, hesitating to turn around and leave before he decided to just give in to his gremlin thoughts and he leaned in and off his toes, pressing a kiss against Yuuta’s cheek before he rushed back inside his apartment again.

He couldn’t help but peek through his keyhole in curiosity and smiled even wider when he found Yuuta standing there stupidly, a hand pressed to the spot where he kissed him looking as if he received the nicest compliment ever in his life. It was so cute and Toge couldn’t wait for tonight, rushing to his bedroom to change into a proper outfit.

And to think, all this because a spider was sent out to murder him.
