Crowded Trains and Summer Daze

Summary:

“Sorry,” Todoroki mumbles out for the nth time in the past couple of minutes and at this point, all Katuski can do is sigh heavily through his nose as he tries not to lose his shit.

Their patrol had run late today, before of course it did, which means they’re stuck taking the subway during rush hour and like the gentlemen they are, they both had forsaken getting a seat so a pregnant woman and her son could have them.

Because yeah, being a hero means saving the world but it also means being a decent fucking human being and giving up a seat on the subway for people that need it more than you.

Notes:

this is for @yoongguked on twitter <3 i got so into this one i wrote it in like an hour haha

Work Text:

“Sorry,” Todoroki mumbles out for the nth time in the past couple of minutes and at this point, all Katuski can do is sigh heavily through his nose as he tries not to lose his shit.

Their patrol had run late today, because of course it did, which means they’re stuck taking the subway during rush hour and like the gentlemen they are, they both had forsaken getting a seat so a pregnant woman and her son could have them.

Because yeah, being a hero means saving the world but it also means being a decent fucking human being and giving up a seat on the subway for people that need it more than you.

He aims this particular thought at a group of teenagers who seem to care more about their phone game than the old man who’s forced to stand because of them.

Gritting his teeth, Katsuki takes another deep breath and shifts closer to Todoroki, counting down the stops until theirs so they can finally make it back to their apartment and sleep.

The train screeches to an unceremonious stop as it approaches another platform and once again, Todoroki mumbles out a needless apology. Needless because not only is it fucking packed and he’d rather Todoroki bump into him than some other lucky nobody, but also because it’s Todoroki and they’ve lived together for three years now and known eachother for twice as long and it’s no secret that Katuski has a soft spot bigger than the country of Japan for him.

“You don’t have to keep apologizing–” And Katsuki’s grumble is quickly cut off because some asshole decides that shoulder-checking the number 2 hero is something that just anybody can do and Todoroki barrels into him hard enough to hurt. It knocks the wind out of him but he can’t find it in himself to care because someone just fucking pushed Todoroki.

What the fuck.

“HEY!” Katsuki rages, hands coming down to grip Todoroki’s waist in an attempt to steady him as he peers over his shoulder and hollers after the guy that picks up his pace at the yelling. “WATCH WHERE YOU’RE FUCKING GOING YOU PIECE OF SHIT!”

“Bakugo,” Todoroki admonishes right in Katsuki’s ear because oh yeah, he fell into him and until he gains his footing, the only thing keeping him upright is Katsuki’s body and his large hands on his, frankly, ridiculously small waist.

“There are children around.”

Swallowing audibly, he peers up at Todoroki whose face is mere inches from his own and pretends the flush of red on his cheeks is from the lack of air conditioning in this shitty subway car.

Despite the fact that it’s working quite well considering it’s a summer day and despite the fact that Todoroki’s been acting as his personal AC unit every summer pretty much since they’ve known each other.

Unconsciously flexing his fingers, he grips Todoroki’s waist tighter and stares in awe at the red that colors his cheeks.

“Yeah,” He breathes, not entirely sure if his brain is even working at the moment. Turning his gaze to the side, he catches the eye of the pregnant woman, who stares at them wide eyed, and grumbles out an apology, which she waves off with a smile.

With that taken care of, Katsuki turns his attention to more pressing matters.

A matter that is quite literally pressing right against him.

“You good?” He whispers to Todoroki who in turn nods and attempts to find his footing, shuffling awkwardly as he places his hands on Katsuki’s shoulders and uses them as leverage to bring himself back to full height.

The train car is impossibly full now, somehow fitting even more people than before, and while Todoroki is able to stand upright again, he’s unable to take a step back.

The train rolls to a start again and this time he doesn’t apologize when he bumps into Katsuki because he’s already flush against him.

Not that either of them are complaining.

Katsuki has one arm firmly around Todoroki’s waist, the other gripping one of the handles that hangs from the ceiling with a death grip. He’s almost entirely stabilizing the both of them right now as Todoroki’s own handle has been taken and he instead stands with his arms locked firmly around Katsuki’s neck.

Once again, not that either of them are complaining.

The remainder of their train ride is ridden in companionable silence. They take turns catching each other’s eyes and flushing red, like they’re schoolboys again, and allowing themselves to relax into each other. Katsuki’s thumb strokes soothing circles into Todoroki’s side and Todoroki occupies himself by playing with the hair at the nape of Katsuki’s neck.

It’s…nice.

Like all good things though, it comes to an end sooner rather than later when they finally arrive at their stop. They pull away begrudgingly, not even having realized that the train had pretty much cleared out at this point, and nod their goodbyes to the mother and her child before departing.

They take their usual walk home but it seems to take longer as they walk close enough for their hands to brush. When Todoroki stops at the entrance to the alleyway beside their apartment to pet the stray cats that live there, Katsuki crouches with him and their hands bump when they reach to pet the same cat.

By the time they actually make it back into their apartment, the sun’s gone down and the cicada’s chirp loud enough to hear them even with the front door closed. Katsuki stares at Todoroki’s back as he makes his way into his room and ignores the itch to follow him by instead heading into the kitchen to get started on dinner.

He does not wait with bated breath for Todoroi’s soft footfalls to enter the kitchen and he does not blush red when he turns and sees Todoroki standing in the entryway, hair wet from his shower and eyes soft.

He does, however, speak at the same time Todoroki does.

“What do you want for dinner?”

“Will you kiss me?”

It’s silent in the moment that follows, Katsuki standing there with his mouth agape as Todoroki fidgets with the hem of his– Katuki’s– sweatshirt.

“Thank fuck.” Katsuki practically shouts, Todoroki jumping slightly at the sudden noise. His surprise turns to giddy happiness as Katsuki crosses the room in two long strides and kisses him until the cicadas quiet and the sun rises.

And in the back of their minds, they’re both silently thankful for crowded trains.
