Broken Bonds: Regrets and Heartbreak

Summary:

"So you're saying, you're my child?" Kuroo eyes the messy-haired kid in front of him. "You do know how many people just try to claim that for money, right?"
"That's right. I did look for you for money." The thin kid says bluntly "13 years... no scratch that make it an advance til I'm 18."
"I don't even know who gave birth to you." Kuroo exclaims.
"If your list is that long then try to narrow it down yourself." The kid replies "I'm okay with a DNA test but I need at least half the money now."
Kuroo sighs "I can't just do that. Why do you need it so badly?"
"My dad's sick."

Where one day a kid with the same messy hair as Kuroo suddenly came looking for him asking for money. Kuroo discovers the secrets after his divorce from Tsukishima Kei and finds Kei in a tough position. Unwilling, no unable, to leave Kei the way he is, Kuroo offers his home. Will there be a time where feelings form once again?

Notes:

I couldn't stop thinking about this plot. Contains heavy themes of poverty, prostitution, self-worth issues, and implied sexual assault. I will try my best to update the tags as necessary.

Chapter 1: Hello... father?

Chapter Text

"Kuroo? There is an...unusual guest for you." Kuroo's secretary, Yaku,  called making Kuroo sigh. He was as flooded in work as it is.

"What is it?" He asks, reading the documents in his hands.

"A kid wants to see you, he claims it to be quite urgent." Yaku said.

"Yaku, you know I have no time for this." He replies with yet another sigh.

"I know...but this one...." Yaku leads on.

"Fine, let him in." Kuroo says, trusting Yaku's judgement.

Kuroo lifts his head away from his documents just in time to see a thin kid with the same messy black hair as he did back in the days. But what took it for him, was the strikingly gold-brown eyes that he only used to see from his ex-husband.

"I know you're busy so I'll get straight to the point" the thin boy says, blunt but not rude, "Unfortunately, you're my biological father, I'm asking for the child support money."

Kuroo sighs "You seem like a bright kid, so you should know I can't just do that. Why do you need it so badly?"

Kuroo watches the kid, the golden-brown eyes seem to be deep in thought, eyebrows crunching together ever so slightly, making him look so much like Tsukishima Kei, his omega ex-husband.

"My dad's sick." He finally says. "How about you give me half the money as a loan until it's proven that I really am your kid."

Kuroo contemplates for a bit. If this child really was his and Kei's child, then that would mean Kei is currently sick and unable to pay for treatment. Or it could be just another child and their parent hoping to make some quick cash. Before Kuroo can make up his mind, the kid's phone rings. Kuroo was able to briefly catch the picture amidst the cracked screen. The child quickly excuses himself and turns his back to Kuroo.

"Dad?" The kid whispers quietly.

"Don't you 'dad' me! Where are you Haruto?!" A faint voice can be heard from the phone. It was the same angry voice that has been missing from his life for more than a decade.

"Dad, I'm okay... I promise, I'll call you later okay?" The kid quickly scrambles to explain, an explanation that Kei clearly doesn't want to listen to as he continues on into his rant.

Before Kuroo could think about it, he takes the phone from the kid, "Kei, he's with me. I'll bring him home asap."

"Y-y-you!" Kei fumbles a surprised expression, only to be interrupted by a fit of cough.

"Calm down, I promise you I'm bringing him home now." Kuroo tries to coo.

"What are you even doing with my son?!"

"Let's talk about that later, okay?"

"Fine." Kei sighs "Hurry bring him home!"

After dropping the call, the kid looks expectantly at Kuroo.

"I guess I'm getting that money, then?" He asks.

"But we still take a DNA test." Kuroo says.

"What? You clearly know my dad!"

"I do." Kuroo confirms "And you are most probably my son. But as you know, your dad will be quite stubborn about this."

"Didn't you hear my opening statement earlier? I just need the money. I'm not looking for any relationship with you."

"I think that's not just up to you, bud." Kuroo says. "How about some introductions while I prepare to bring you home. Your father is already as furious as it is."

"Fine, I'm Haruto." The kid, Haruto says "I'm turning 13 this year. I'm in middle school."

"I'm Kuroo Tetsuro." Kuroo acknowledges as he grabs his bag and keys. Sending a quick message to Yaku about needing to be driven.

"You living alone with your dad?" Kuroo asks.

"Yup." Haruto says, "Been me and him since I was born."

Somehow Kuroo feels at ease with that.

"Sooo" Haruto asks as Kuroo guides him to the elevators "Why did you and dad break up?"

"It's a bit complicated, kid" Kuroo sighs. "But I'm glad Kei decided to go through and give birth to you, even without me."

"Wait. You're not planning on taking me from my dad are you?" Haruto accuses, eyes squinting a little.

"Of course not." Kuroo pats his kid's head. "Honestly, this is very surreal to me. But I would never take you apart from your dad."

To be honest, Kuroo is freaking out. He was definitely not ready to be a father, especially not when he had a ‘CEO’ and not a ‘father’ growing up. But as a businessman, he has trained to keep everything inside and be as composed as possible.

It doesn't stop the mountain of questions raging inside his head though.

Kei is sick? How bad is it that their son had to look for him? What's their situation now? What happened after they divorced?

As Yaku pulls up with the car,

"Ah!" Kuroo suddenly remembers as they exit the elevator "How did you get here, Haruto?"

"Me? I walked." Haruto replies, as if it was the most obvious answer.

"You walked? How far is your home? Do you know how dangerous that was!" Kuroo says going on full protective parent mode.

"It's not that far!" Haruto defends.

It was indeed far. It took Haruto 2 hours with casual rest breaks to reach the office.

"Kuroo." Yaku warns lightly. He knows that his friend, while may not show it, cares very deeply for his family and friends. If this child is indeed his, fighting with him is not the best first meeting.

Kuroo sighs, opening the door, letting Haruto go in first.

"Wow" Haruto whispers, but Kuroo hears it.

The moment Haruto enters his address, Kuroo can already feel the worry-anger turn again.

"This is not not far!" Kuroo protests. The area is also not the safest, specially not for his son to walk alone in!

"Look, I'm already gonna hear it from my dad, so you two might as well just do it together." Haruto huffs.

Yaku gives a small giggle at that, as they head over to the address.
