"What if?"

Summary:

Post- descendants one. Evie realises she has feelings.
Idk I'm bad at summaries.

Notes:

This might be a little ooc it's been a while since I've watched the films so sorry about that. Also in this Mal never actually liked Ben and she broke up with him after the coronation, it's not mentioned but I thought I'd share that context.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

"Hey guys, what if- what if I like girls?"

Jay pauses his game and looks at Carlos. Evie had decided to hang out in the boys room after ending things with Doug and the pair had thought nothing of it: Mal was out doing who knows what and Evie has never been a fan of being on her own.

There's a beat of silence before Carlos finally speaks, "So? What if you like girls?"

"I mean, like, romantically"

Jay chimes in "Yeah so? I do too what of it?"

"Yeah but that's different"

"Why? 'Cuz you're not a guy? I don't see why that matters. I know guys who date guys so why can't girls date girls?"

Evie doesn't say anything. This clearly wasn't the response she was expecting but she supposes she's  grateful for it.

Carlos interrupts Evie's train of thought,
"Did you have someone in mind?"

"Like Mal?" Jay adds.

"How did you-"

"Ha! I knew it 'los you owe me 20 bucks"

"I never agreed to that"

"Pretty sure you did, anyways Eve, you should ask her out. Mal is like so in love with you"
Evie's taken a back, "What makes you think that?"

"It is so obvious, I can't believe you haven't noticed"

"Yeah, I mean if Jay could figure it out, it's gotta be really in obvious -oof" Carlos is interrupted by an elbow in the stomach "- really dude?"

"Well yeah she likes me but not like that"

"Yes like that Evie, c'mon you seriously haven't noticed that you're like her favourite person?" Carlos asks.

"She's my best friend! That's it, we are just friends!"

"Yeah but you want to be more, and she definitely does too. Just ask her out"

"But what if you're wrong? What if she hates me? I don't want to ruin our friendship!"

"Did we not just establish you are her favourite person? If somehow me and Jay are wrong, which we definitely aren't, she still won't hate you. I don't think she's capable of it."

"How can you be sure?"

"Evie, we've known you basically our whole lives. We know you two well enough by now to see when you like some one."

"Just ask her out, worst that could happen is she says no." Jay adds.

"I guess you're right"

"Of course I am! When have I ever been wrong."

"Constantly. Jay you fail practically every test." Carlos retorts, gaining a laugh out of Evie who had been far too serious today.

"Yeah whatever. I'm right about this though and you know it. Evie just ask her out."

Evie thinks for a moment before responding, "I think I will, and I know just where to do it"

"Ugh Evie why do I have to be here? You know how much I hate shopping!"

Mal twists her face as if going shopping with Evie is the worst fate in the world, despite the fact that she leaves their arms interlinked.

"Mal c'mon, they just got a bunch of new fabric in and I want to make summer dresses. Besides we'll go to that coffee place you like later."

"Fine," Mal grumbles, hiding the slight smile on her lips.

Evie hums contentedly, Mal knows nothing of what she has planned for today, or how nervous she is.

After what felt like and eternity of shopping (in reality it was less than an hour) they were finally making their way to the coffee shop. Mal should be happy about this but Evie seemed to be growing more and more tense which worried her. Mal wants to ask if she's ok, but she's never been one to talk about feelings so the words never manage to leave her mouth.

After ordering their coffees, which Evie insisted on being to-go, they began walking away from the town.

"Where are we going E?"

"Just waited and see" Evie hummed, giddy with both excitement and anxiety.

"You know I hate suprises"

"Humour me"

The pair walked in silence for what would have been an uncomfortable about of time for most, but they had grown so fond of each other's company and didn't need words to enjoy it. Mal found them walking through trees, past the enchanted lake, into a beautiful clearing.

Evie sat down by a tree and and motioned for Mal to do the same. When they were sat face to face, Evie began speaking,

"Mal, I like you"

"I like you too E"

"No! I mean, I really like you. Like romantically. And I totally get if you dont feel the same I just wanted you to know"

A light smile came to Mal's face. Not the playful smirk she had after pranking the boys or pulling of a heist, this looks was different. It was more gentle, personal, a smile reserved just for Evie.

"Evie, I have liked- no loved you for so long. Of course I feel the same: I can't imagine a world without you."

Evie feels like her heart might burst. She had planned out exactly how she was going to confess to Mal but she had not prepared for her sentiment to be returned. Her mind completely blanks, she leans in and kisses the girl of her dreams.

Just as she's about to pull away and apologise for being so forward, Mal returns this kiss.

"You have no idea how long I've wanted to do that."
