Does it ever get easier?" Nora asks as she and Nick walk side by side back to the detective agency. Dim lights from Diamond city shops only slightly illuminating the dark walkways between buildings.
The detective looks her way.
"What d'you mean?"
She shrugs nonchalantly.
"The cases. Do they ever end up being what you expect?"
He laughs lightly and looks ahead in thought. The warm summer night air surrounds them like a comforting blanket, welcoming them home.
"Well.... Some are. But rarely so. I suppose that's the point though isn't it? People come to us with the harder cases instead of something trivial like..... A barroom brawl."
" Sure. " she says nudging his shoulder playfully.
"Even Diamond city security knows that Vadim is behind those. That moonshine of his can rot the brain faster than the stomach."
He shakes his head.
"Yeah true. That, or they pass out before they even finish their drink."
She nods.
"Yeah."
They fall into a comfortable silence. Just happy to be in each other's company. They turn onto a street, they weren't far from the agency now.
As they walk, Nick looks to her with a small smile and a playful glint in his eyes before suddenly wrapping his arm around her waist. Pulling her into the shadows of the nearest alleyway.
She laughs in surprise and blushes when He smirks at her. His golden halos glowing brightly in the dark.
"Nick?" She says grinning. " What are you doing? "
He holds her close and leans in, brushing his nose softly against hers. "I just want a moment alone with you before we give Ellie the news." He whispers.
She blushes a deeper shade of pink and smiles up at him.
"Mmm, I certainly won't object....."
He smirks even more and his tall build holds her close as he bends her over slightly to kiss her passionately.
She grabs the lapels of his brown coat in her hands and pushes into the contact.
He wraps one arm firmly around her body, pulling her flush against him. His other hand winds into her long hair to hold the back of her head before dipping her farther and deepening the kiss.
He pulls back a little when he knows she needs to breathe, and switches to trailing feathery kisses along her jaw and cheek.
"Goodness." She says breathlessly. "We should walk back in the dark after every case." She laughs happily.
He laughs too, the low sound reverberating in his chest.
"That can be arranged....." He rests his forehead against hers and looks into her hazel eyes with affection. His own neon ones seeming even brighter than before.
She grins.
"I would like that."
She slides her hands up to wrap around his neck. She leans closer to kiss the tip of his nose, then his defined cheekbones, temples, down to his jaw, chin, and the corners of his mouth. Touching her lips to every part of his face.
His eyes fall shut and she stands in her tip toes to very gently kiss each of his eyelids before bringing her mouth back to his. He immediately responds to the touch, tilting his head to better fit his lips to hers.
His arms go tight around her again and she sighs softly between kisses.
She grins against his lips before pulling away a bit.
"Come on." She whispers , straightening his tie and repositioning his hat on his head.
"We should go give Ellie the news."
He attempts to smooth the mess he'd made of her hair and gives her another small peck on the lips.
"Okay let's go." He smiles and takes her hand in his and they walk back to the agency for the first time in weeks.
