The Sun and the Red Queen

Summary:

Rook’s Rest fight.

Notes:

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO TOP SEASON 8 DRAGON FIGHT?! Just… it was better than Season 1. Much better… but then they had to ruin it by the potential fleeing/changing mind stuff. No.

Work Text:

Angōs, Meleys! Rhaenys called, directing the Red Queen toward the much smaller golden dragon. Until now, the Queen-who-never-was had burned several men after they had tried to shoot down her beloved Meyles. Pitiful as their attempts were, arrows would do nothing to dragon scales. They died screaming in flames. And for what? The False King Aegon? Pitiful indeed. And soon, the usurper would join them.

The golden dragon’s maw opened, and beautiful yellow flame edged in pink shot out. Rhaenys shifted a bit as Meleys flew through the fireball, unscathed. She then swooped and swerved, shooting up beneath Sunfyre, and gripping the dragon with her sharp talons. After a few moments, the larger female raked them across the male’s ribs.

The dragon fell several feet, bleeding, allowing Meleys to turn about. The small sun  was angry, and in pain, correcting himself and trying to gain altitude, when the Red Queen flanked him, her mouth tight on Sunfyre’s wing.

Meleys began chasing after Sunfyre, almost casually gripping and releasing the smaller dragon as if it were no more than a plaything. Rhaenys once more felt pity for Aegon. He should have known better…

As the gold dragon gripped one of Meleys’s spikes, ripping it off, Rhaenys turned to see that Vhagar had arrived. Meleys still gripped Sunfyre’s wing, holding it in her grasp.

“Thank the Gods!” Aegon called. “Burn her!”

The command had been said, and Vhagar’s maw began to open. Aegon grew scared, but Rhaenys smirked, bracing herself for the heat of the flame. As Vhagar’s breath struck, Sunfyre fell from the sky, still breathing flame himself.

Meleys was unfazed, grabbing Vhagar’s much larger talon with her own, and trying to rake the larger Dragon’s belly as well with the other. All the while, they both breathed flame at each other.

The thought to kill Aemond crossed Rhaenys’s mind as the two began falling to join the golden sun. However, unless the fool wanted to slay her personally, there would be no way for Rhaenys to reach him. Unless…

Irughagon, Meleys!” Rhaenys called, shielding her eyes from the flame. “Eglie jagon!

The Red Queen obeyed, breaking free from Vhagar, just before they could reach the tree line. Due to Vhagar’s size, the larger dragon was unable to break her fall completely, but she still tried to lunge, grabbing Meleys’s neck.

Screeching could be heard as Meleys fought to be released, clawing Vhagar’s muzzle, breathing fire into Vhagar’s eye; the larger dragon crying out in fury. Rhaenys turned her dragon to try and catch Aemond, but the flame from Vhagar scorched her. It was agonizing for a moment, but then she found herself looking at Laena, reaching out to grip her hand as she fell toward the ground in a burst of flame.
