Wait, really? [rewritten]

Summary:

While Giorno and Mista talk about dating Giorno accidentally reveals something about himself that he didn't mean to.

Notes:

hihi!!! I rewrote this because i like super-duper hated it the first go round. Originally when i wrote this It was immediately after this happened and I was so embarrassed that I could only get it out of my head by writing this shit. This time though, rather than writing it with the perspective of "Oh my god that was so embarrassing I need to throw myself off a cliff right fucking now" its written almost a year later with the perspective of "I totally misinterpreted what they meant but like, they 1000% like me. idk how i ever thought they didn't"

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Giorno and Mista lay sprawled across Giorno’s bed, It’s god knows hour of the night. Maybe morning. Probably morning by this point.
The two had been lying and talking about all sorts of everything for hours now, Giorno had disappeared into his room immediately following dinner so that he could try to get some more work done before bed, but that didn’t work out as well as he had hoped as Mista followed behind not long after, flopping onto Giorno’s bed and beginning to ramble about his most recent mission. It didn’t take long for Giorno to give up on trying to focus on the document he was reading over and join MIsta on the bed.

Their conversation had been random as it always was, the two jumping from topic to topic as they came to their minds. They had started with their recent assignments and plans for their next day off, but as the conversation went on they ended up landing on the topic of dating.

“I don’t know, I just don’t really see the point in dating right now, y’know?” Mista said, stretching his arms up above his head, almost hitting Giorno in the process.

“I guess. I do think it sounds nice though.” Giorno responded as he pushed Mista’s still raised hand out of his face. “To like, have someone care for you in a way like that. Even if things don’t work out you’ll know more about what you want for the next time, right?”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right. It’s just that if I were to date someone I’d want to think that it’s gonna work. Neither of us are in a place for that right now.”

“Mhm” Girono turns his body so that it faces more away from Mista. As embarrassing as it was, he couldn’t really stand to look at Mista when he spoke about not wanting to date anyone. It hurt more than he thought it would, to hear that there’s almost absolutely no chance that the guy he’d had a crush on for almost as long as he knew him would go out with him anytime soon.

“It’s kinda like, just wait until you can say you’re a year or two older than now and then we’ll talk.” Mista doesn’t seem to notice Giorno’s movement as he continues talking, though he does notice when his words make Giorno freeze completely and then flip back over to look at him as fast as he can.

“Wait, really!?” This was about as hopeful as Giorno had ever felt about Mista liking him. How was he supposed to interpret that if not that Mista liked him too, but just wasn’t in a place to date right now, right?

“What?”

Wrong.

Dead fucking wrong, apparently.

“I- uh- nothing. Nothing. I didn’t say anything..Nope! Nothing at all.” Giorno quickly turned back over to his previous side, facing away from Mista. He had so totally screwed that up, hadn’t he. There was no denying, Mista totally knew now. Mista knew and he was gonna think he was weird. He was going to think Giorno waas weird, and gross, and he’d never want to talk to him again. He had just ruined one of his favorite relationships over getting his hopes up too high. In his thoughts he vaguely felt Mista sitting up. Undoubtedly to leave.

“Giorno…What was that? What did you mean?” Had Mista somehow not understood what he meant?

“It’s nothing Mista.” His voice was small and soft and as shaky as the rest of his body was. He felt as though he should cry, but unable to do so he just shook.

“What? Gior- oh. Oh!” Realization of what he said dawns on Mista’s face as he stares down at Giorno before giggling softly.

“What?” Now it was Giorno’s turn to be confused when he heard Mista laugh. Did Mista think this was funny? That he was joking or something? Honestly, that might just be better than facing the reality.

Mista sighs softly, “Oh Giorno…” He leans down and presses a gentle kiss to Giorno’s cheek, boarding on the edge of his lips before slipping off of the bed to leave. “Talk to me in a year or so, yeah?”

“I- uh- what- yeah. Yeah, Yeah.” Giorno manages to stutter out before Mista leaves, holding his hand up to lightly cup the part of his face that Mista’s soft lips had graced.

“Yeah.” he mutters softly to himself one more time before he rolls back over to the center of his bed to try and get some amount of sleep after that.
