"Mutant Boy" and "Mutant Girl." No Relation

Summary:

“Oh, we’re not brothers,” Leo was quick to correct. You felt your hands tremble.

“...I am not your sister?” her smooth voice was solemn but Leonardo, ever the thick headed, didn’t seem to notice.

“Not at all. You and I are just ‘mutant boy’ and ‘mutant girl’.” His touch grazed down her arms and he held her hands in his. Was he trying to comfort her or…

Then he added “No relation.”

Notes:

I actually discovered Next Mutation about a month back because one of my fave reviewer channels did a massive thing for the whole series (including the Power Rangers crossover). For some reason Leo saying "We're just 'mutant boy' and 'mutant girl'. No relation." just really REALLY hit me as a valid vehicle for angst.

For context, all you really need is to watch the first two episodes. (Good luck because it's kinda exhausting)

Work Text:

“I kinda overheard your talk with Mei Pieh Chi.”

“Oh, how much of it?” Leo asked.

“Just enough.”

“You’re thinking of Chung I.” You heard Leonardo’s voice.

“He was my father. I was his daughter,” said a woman’s voice.

“He must’ve loved you very much, Mei.”

They were so close, they were almost conjoined. The way he looked at Mei Pieh Chi was soft and content. He just took all of her in, seeing the new female turtle in the speckled lights of the New York night. It was the way he looked at you, his girlfriend.

Despite what little ninja training you had, you snuck through the deep shadows. You had to get closer. Usually Leo would’ve caught you but not then.

“...I will help you and your brothers,” she said.

“Oh, we’re not brothers,” Leo was quick to correct. You felt your hands tremble.

“You mean none of you are related?”

“No, we were all actually born and bred on turtle farms and just ended up in the same pet shop. Don did some investigating a few years back. He came from a turtle breeder in Michigan, Mikey’s from Alabama and Raph’s from north New Jersey.”

Your jaw tightened.

“We… We should be returning to your home in the toilet,” Mei turned away so fast her braided mask tails almost slapped him as she left.

“Well, it’s a ‘sewer’, Mei,” Leo softly corrected.

“What’s the difference.” It wasn’t a question.

He was leading her back to the lair when you showed yourself with a soft “Leo?”

“Mei Pieh Chi’s a fellow turtle,” Leo’s voice was still.

“I can see that,” you said flatly. “She’s also a girl and not your sister . You made that very clear.”

“It’s true.”

“That’s not the point, Leonardo.” Ooo . You used his full name, now he knows he’s fucked up. “I literally saw your whole conversation! You were all over her and she wasn’t even here yesterday and I… I just want to know-”

“KNOW WHAT?” he yelled, taking a step toward you.

Why was your throat so tight all of a sudden? “WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT!? I’m your girlfriend, Leonardo! You meet one mutant girl -one- and you forget about what we have!”

“I did not! How can you even say that!”

Your eyes were welling up with hot tears, “Well, you really didn’t act like it!” You forced a sigh to calm yourself down. “Leo, just… just tell me, would you have acted like that if she was a human or is it just because she’s a girl turtle?”

He was silent.

“Would you have done that if I was a turtle too?”

His silence was telling.

“(Y/N), please-” He started but you were already over it.

“Leonardo. Please don’t follow me, don’t come to my place, don’t call me either,” you said, each shaking word was a step away from him.

Leo grabbed you by your wrist, stopping you in your tracks. “Baby, please don’t. I was-.” For once his hold wasn’t a comfort.

You whipped your hand away and said in a stone cold voice, “It’s over, Leonardo.” You marched off, trying your best to make sure he couldn’t see your face as you left.

You found Raph alone in the lair’s garage, working on his bike. You didn’t know what you would’ve done if you saw Don in there. Even so, you just stood just beyond notice for just a very long time. You didn’t know how long you were just standing there, just in a kind of anxious mopey trance until you heard a whistle.

“Hey! How long ya’ just gonna stand there?” It was Raph, still at work.

Despite your brave face, your voice betrayed you, “Hey Raph, sorry about that.” You just knew you looked like absolute shit; your face was still red, cheeks were still tear-stained and voice croaky and whimpering. “I just wanted to ask if you’d give me a ride home.”

Even with your vision wobbly, you knew he was looking you over. Raph wasn’t much of an empath but you thought he must’ve felt sorry for you.

“Yea, alright,” Raph grunted as saddled up on his motorcycle, “Just hang on and don’t get any boogers on my shell.”

“Thanks Raph,” you smiled through your tears.
