Work Text:

"What's taking you so long?." Sonic was standing outside of Amy's house. The two were given V.I.P. tickets to Unnamed Village's suspiciously out-of-the-blue chilli-dog festival, and now they were running late, "Amy, I'm leaving in 2 minutes, I won't stand for this any longer! Those poor chili-dogs waiting to be eaten! What you're doing to me should be a crime."

Amy groaned from the other side of the door, "Sonic, you have a problem, besides," The door opened, "I'm done!" Amy stepped out wearing...exactly what she always wore.

Sonic dead-panned, "You look exactly the same, what took you so long in there?" He thought she still looked good even if she was just wearing the same thing, he shook off the thought.

"A girls gotta do, what a girls gotta do, Sonic. Now c'mon, or we're going to be late!" She ran down the bridge to her house.

Sonic face-palmed and followed.

**

"This is not what I was expecting." Sonic watched as Eggman made his grand entrance with his new 'Chili-dog Mech'.

"HAHAHE...Behold Sonic, your favourite food item turned against you! I can't believe you fell for the old-fake chilli-dog festival trick!" Eggman hollered over the mech's horrible speakers.

"Eggman no matter how good it looks, you don't disgrace chili-dogs like this, it's cruel." Sonic had to give it to Eggman this was hard to watch, the mech really did look like a giant chili-dog.

"C'mon Sonic face it! You can't destroy this, it's genius!" Eggman wasn't terrorizing Unnamed Village though, so Sonic didn't try to stop him.

"Amy, I don't think I can do this." Sonic turned to her with a pathetic frown.

Amy raised an eyebrow, "You've got to be kidding me, it's Eggman! Who cares if it's chili-dog shaped? He might do something horrible with it! Like destroy ancient tombs!" Amy pulled out her hammer and got in a fighting stance. Sonic mentally smiled at her worry for the ancient tombs, she really did have a passion for archaeology.

Sonic wiped the frown from his face, "No, I didn't eat anything yesterday. I was preparing to eat chili-dogs all day, and now I'm starving."

Amy rolled her eyes. She ran up to the mech and smashed her hammer into its side. The mech teetered a bit but besides that, didn't budge.

"Sonic, you get your butt over here and help!" Amy dodged a hit.

Sonic's stomach growled and he looked at Amy, "But-"

Amy shot him a glare, then continued going at the mech. Sonic sighed, "Ok, but you owe me a chili-dog!"

Sonic and Amy attacked the mech on the same side, Sonic spin-dashed, and Amy hit. The mech crashed to the floor. Eggman shot out of it in a parachute. The citizens of the village came out of their homes and cheered.

"I'll get you next time Sonic!" He yelled as he gently floated down.

"Can't wait!" Sonic saluted him and turned to Amy, "Chilli dog."

Amy glared at him. Sonic blinked and revealed puppy eyes, "Please Amy?" Right on time, Sonic's stomach growled again.

Amy rolled her eyes and pulled him to Meh Burger, "One chilli dog, please."

Dave looked up at them from his phone, "Sorry, I'm on breeaaak."

Amy growled, and Sonic deflated.

"They seriously need to hire better employees!" Amy left Meh Burger, Sonic crawling behind her.

"Amy, I can feel my stomach eating itself. I need a chilli-dog!" Sonic whined, feeling no shame while he lay face-first in the grass.

"I work with children." Amy crouched to Sonic's level, "What if I make you a chilli-dog?"

Sonic peeked at her, "Really?" She often made food for the whole team. Would she really make food for just him?

"Yes, I'm sure I have a recipe for one in my cookbook."

Sonic flipped and landed on his feet, "Then what are we waiting for?" He grabbed her hand and raced to her house. He stopped at the door, and let go of a dizzy Amy's hand.

"Warn me next time." She slapped the back of his head and went inside. Sonic chuckled. He thought it was cute that Amy got so dizzy every time he did that. Sonic stopped short of going inside and blinked. Weird thought, anyways.

Amy took out her cookbook and flipped through it. Sonic sat on the bar stools and whistled.

"Aha! Here we go." Amy read the recipe, "Okay, I'll need chilli, sausage, and hot dog buns." Amy looked at Sonic, "If you please, or are you too dead to get me the ingredients?"

Sonic shook his head, "Never too dead for chili-dogs." With that, he zipped out of the house, ran to town again, bought the ingredients, then zipped back, "For you m'lady." He set the items down and sat in the same spot.

Amy giggled, "Thanks Sonic, this shouldn't take me too long."

Sonic stared at her. Since when did she giggle like that? It was the most beautiful thing he had ever heard, "What did you just do?"

Amy was turning the oven on and she looked back at him, confused, "What?"

"That sound."

"What sound?"

"Whatever." Sonic rested his head on his hand. Amy grabbed a pot and pan, put them on the stove, and unwrapped the hot dog buns.

Sonic watched her. She was so at home in the kitchen, moving with the grace of a swan. Sonic pushed himself out of the bar stool, startling Amy.

"What happened?" She had lifted a spoon as a weapon.

Sonic ducked his face, sure that it was beet red, "Nothing! Just remembered that I...left my oven on! Call me when the chili-dogs are ready!" He sped out of there way faster than he should of.

Amy watched him go and shook her head, puzzled.

Sonic's breathing was ragged. What was that! With the grace of a swan, that was a new one. Sonic ran all through town and more, till he reached the other side of the island. Why did he think of such an absurd thing? Amy was the queen of the kitchen, everyone knew that. Why did his brain have to think of it in such a romantic way? And why was his face so warm? He went to the water and splashed some on his cheeks. Why did his thoughts tend to run away on him every time he was with her?

"Oh hey, you come here to wallow too?"

Sonic jerked around and saw Eggman sitting on the water's edge, "What are you doing Egghead?" He got into a defensive position.

Eggman put his hands up, "No, no! I don't want anything. I'm wallowing in my defeat."

Sonic relaxed, "Oh, I guess I'm sorry I bothered you."

Eggman waved it off, "No worries, you look like your mind is on something too. I find the ocean really helps me calm down."

Sonic was surprised to see Eggman actually have such insight. Eggman noticed him staring, "What? Just because I'm an evil genius doesn't mean I don't need a little R&R every now and again."

"I guess..." Sonic sat a little ways from him. Knees pulled up to his chest.

Eggman studied him for a minute then turned back to the ocean, "You have something on your mind, young hedgehog."

"Yeah, so?"

"Wanna talk about it?"

Sonic looked at him bizarrely, "Why would I talk to you about my problems?"

Eggman shrugged, "It's good to talk to someone that you don't know that well, it makes it less weird."

"It would be super weird if I talked to you about my problems."

"That's true. Forget I said anything."

They both sat in silence for a while, till Sonic piped up.

"It's Amy. My mind does weird things when I'm with her."

"Oh, girlfriend problems."

"She not my girlfriend!" Sonic stood up defensively. His face flushed.

"Your behaviour says otherwise." Eggman stayed on the sand, very cool about the awkward situation.

"What behaviour?" Sonic didn't know why he was still entertaining this conversation. A part of him wanted to know he guessed.

"When you're with Amy you're different, not too different, you're still an annoying pest, but different. You also look at her differently than your other friends. With Stix, you always have a cautious look. With Tails, you have a brotherly look, and with Knuckles, you have an 'Oh great' look. With Amy it's odd, you look at her almost sweetly." Eggman dropped that onto Sonic with no warning.

"How do you know that?"

"You tend to pick up these things when you fight the same people every week."

Sonic thought about it, did he really look at Amy differently? He didn't think so. Amy was just a good friend, like Stix. He cringed at the thought. Okay so maybe Amy and Stix were a little bit different, but not a lot. Stix was a girl, Amy was a girl. Stix was a close friend, Amy was an even closer friend. Stix was awesome, and Amy was breathtakingly beautiful. Sonic's face was definitely red now. Where did these thoughts come from?

"Ah, have you figured it out yet?"

Sonic nervously laughed, "Figured what out yet? There's nothing to 'figure' out! Me and Amy are close friends. I'm definitely not thinking about everything we've ever done together, and am now thinking about how awesome she is, or how she and Stix are alike but Amy just has something about her that draws my attention, and-." Sonic stopped realizing he was ranting to his enemy.

Eggman chuckled, "Ahh...young love."

"Baah! It's not love! Sonic the Hedgehog doesn't feel love!" Then why did his heart start beating faster, and his palms get sweaty every time she got closer to him than normal? "You're doing stupid stuff to my head! I'm going to go see if my chili-dogs are done!" He didn't see Eggman's smile or hear what Eggman said. He didn't care. He wasn't 'in love'. Wait who said anything about in love? Sonic ran faster.

**

Amy was setting the pan on a hot mat when Sonic burst through the door, almost making her drop it, "Sonic! Don't do that!" She set the pan down and went back to the oven to grab the pot.

Sonic gulped, did she change her quill style? Or did it always round her face like that? And why did her dress make her eyes pop? Did she change? "Hey Amy, just checking to see if the chili-dogs were done." He forced a smile.

"Yep, the chilli is just warmed up. You just have to assemble it yourself." She put the pot down and grabbed two plates, setting them by the bar stools.

Sonic was pretty sure he was visibly sweating as he sat down. Amy walked around the counter and sat beside him.

She took a second to say grace then reached for a bun. He couldn't do this! Everything she was doing, was driving him crazy! Were the bar stools always so close together?

"Wow Amy, this is great but I think I've lost my appetite! Tails asked for my help yesterday with the Tornado, and I wouldn't want to keep him waiting!" Sonic got up and walked backwards to the door.

Amy's body slouched forward, "Oh, okay. I'll save it for you then."

Sonic felt like he was actually going to die, and not from starvation, "I-...okay fine! I can't go on like this!"

Amy stared at him, "Go on with what?"

He walked towards her, "Amy, whenever I'm with you my heart beats faster, every time you help that old lady cross the same street every day my heart beats faster, when you do that thing with your laugh it sounds like a whole orchestra will have to stop and listen, Amy, I'm pretty sure you're the reason I would get a heart attack." He said it in a whole breath, and stopped to take another, "I'm not done, every time Stix asks you to do the most ridiculous thing with her you always say yes cause that's just the person you are, you're kind, you're smart, you keep the team humble, you're the only one who can tie with Knuckles in a arm-wrestle, you even entertain Tails' crazy inventions and Amy, I think I really like you." Sonic kneeled over to catch his breath.

When he looked up at Amy's face, he immediately felt like a jerk. She was crying big bubbling tears, "Oh crap, I shouldn't have said anything, now everything's gonna be weird between us, and we aren't going to be able to look at each other-"

Amy sat up and ran to Sonic, wrapping herself around him. She spoke through crying hiccups, "No, Sonic it's not that, I just always thought I would be the first to confess!" She dug her face into his bandana, soaking it.

He hugged her tightly but was very confused, "What do you mean-" He pulled away and looked at her face, "You like me to?" His eyes were moons, and he waited patiently for her to speak.

She laughed through her tears, "Yes you big oaf! I have for years!" She hugged him again.

Sonic couldn't believe this, she liked him too? He picked her up and spun her around, she laughed.

"You're being serious?" Sonic set her down and stared into her emerald eyes.

She nodded wildly, "Yes! You're the most inspirational person I've ever met, you never give up no matter how bad the scenario! You put up with my archaeology talk, and never make me feel bad for it! You're the best brother to Tails, and you would stay by Knuckles's side to the end, and you're always down for one of Stix's crazy booby-trap ideas! How could I not like you?" She wiped the tears from her face.

Sonic rested his forehead against hers, and closed his eyes, "I'm so dumb."

"I've been giving you hints for years." She giggled and Sonic bear hugged her.

"I'm sure you'll enjoy telling me every hint you've ever given."

"Every second of it."

**

Eggman was still sitting on the beach when Orbot and Cubot flew in out of nowhere with the Egg-pod.

"It happened!" Cubot spun around in joy.

Eggman smiled out at the ocean, "Now they'll be even more annoying I bet."
