Work Text:
For Phayu, being part of the mafia has always been something he just does. A part of life. He thrived at it, as both Chai and Pakin tend to remind him. Being a third in command suits him, being able to let out all the dark and violent tendencies Phayu has.
Being part of the mafia is only one part of Phayu’s life, even if it takes a big part of it. Another part of his life is the architecture – something Phayu refused to ever let go even if he barely has any free time due to both his job as an architect, running the garage with his brother and working for Pakin.
Recently, there’s also someone who’s always on Phayu’s mind. Phayu isn’t used to that kind of feeling, to constantly thinking of someone. It’s a distraction.
A welcome one. But a distraction nonetheless.
Or, Phayu should be more precise - it’s only a distraction because Saifah keeps teasing him about it. Saifah doesn’t have all the information, but that never really stopped Saifah from teasing. It probably has something to do with how well Saifah knows Phayu.
But back to the person who makes Phayu smile at his phone in such a silly way, the person who doesn’t seem to care about Phayu’s status in the faculty for architecture, the person who sends him messages the whole day – often funny memes, the person Phayu believes he could love if he dares to try.
Rain.
His Rain.
Someone who is already Phayu’s whole world. No matter how hard Phayu tries to deny it. Someone who keeps Phayu on his toes, even when the cute boy isn’t aware of it.
It’s refreshing. It’s new. And Phayu enjoys the feeling.
And he will continue, while it lasts.
Because Phayu doesn’t actually believe it will last long. It never does. That’s why he usually keeps to the flings or simply sexual partners. They made life easy.
Not that easy is Phayu’s favorite. It’s far from it. But easy is good. Easy means he can continue living the way he has without worrying about upsetting his partner.
Actually, Phayu has never cared how they felt. He has always made it crystal clear that he doesn’t want anything more – just sex.
Phayu’s closest friend, other than his brother, agrees with this view of the world. Of course, Phayu doesn’t have as many partners as Prapai does, but that doesn’t mean they both don’t see the appeal in no dating.
Except.
Things changed for Phayu.
Everything changed when Rain entered Phayu’s life on that rainy night. The genuine kindness Rain showed to Phayu when he came out with an open umbrella and shielded Phayu from the rain. It touched Phayu’s heart, like the gentlest of touches he has ever felt. The act of kindness that was simply just that – kindness. No strings attached. For someone in the mafia, this is almost unimaginable.
And yet, it happened.
Phayu regretted not asking for a name or the number from Rain, but it was so much more important to get Rain, who was wearing a simple university uniform that was already getting soaked, out of the rain.
And Phayu got lucky, learning Rain is in his codeline – how lucky can one man be? Phayu won’t question it, but he’s thankful.
As Phayu’s reminiscing, his phone rings shortly – a text message. Phayu moves away from the bike he was working on, wipes his hands of the oil and checks the message. He smiles when he sees it’s from Rain. It’s a question, if Phayu’s free that afternoon or evening.
Truthfully, he’s not. But this is Rain. And Rain is the priority.
A quick reply to Rain ensures the boy will come to the garage that evening. Phayu simply has to clear his schedule before Rain comes. That is not easy, it’s quite complicated actually, but Phayu will still do it. For Rain.
Now it's time to do some work.
****
Rain couldn't keep himself from smiling when he got a reply from Phayu. Phayu is free that evening. They can meet. That is so exciting!
“Why are you smiling so much?” Sky asks.
“Nothing,” Rain answers quickly, hiding his phone.
Rain doesn't need Sky to know how much Rain’s opinion of Phayu changed since the race.
The phone beeps again making Rain beam. It must be Phayu. Right?
It's not Phayu.
Rain frowns instantly.
The message is from an unknown number, from someone Rain doesn't know. It says ‘Stay away from Phayu.’ and Rain has no idea why someone would send him this. Is this a joke?
Sky taps Rain on the shoulder and Rain doesn't react. His mind is too busy to react. He needs to figure out who sends him the message and why. If he reacts now, he will be too distracted to remember this later. Or maybe that's better. Maybe Rain should just ignore the message.
Yes, that’s better. He'll just ignore the message and everything will be fine.
“Yes, Sky?” Rain answers with a bright smile.
“You okay?” Sky asks.
“Of course,” Rain says quickly. “Why wouldn't I be?”
Before Sky could ask more questions, the professor arrives and the class starts. Rain is fine with that. It's much better than having to explain what happened a few minutes before this.
The class passes by smoothly, and as soon as it’s over, Rain hurries to meet with Phayu. the strange message not bothering him in the slightest as it’s already forgotten.
“P’Phayu!” Rain beams as soon as he sees the older man.
“Hello, cute boy,” Phayu smiles at Rain. “How was your class?”
“It was okay,” Rain replies with a shrug. “I’m just happy it’s over so I can see you, Phi.”
Phayu chuckles. “Of course, you have to make me fall in love with you.”
Rain blushes. Yes, he has to make Phayu fall in love. And maybe, just maybe, he’s enjoying Phayu’s company so much that Rain might want to keep doing this. There’s something so nice about having Phayu close. But Rain’s sure he isn’t in love with Phayu. He just loves Phayu’s company.
For the rest of the evening, Rain works on his project and Phayu works around the house. Or at least that’s what Rain thinks. Dutifully drawing on the paper, working on the blueprint, when Rain’s phone beeps indicating a new text message. It’s confusing, who would this be? Rain simply picks up his phone and looks. It’s Sky, saying that Rain forgot a book at the faculty so Sky took it to his dorm. Rain replies with a thank you, before continuing his work.
“This looks very good,” Phayu says, leaning above Rain’s shoulder. “You’re quite skilled.”
“This is what I’m good at. I might flunk theory classes, but creative work is where I’m good at,” Rain replies.
Phayu then offers to take Rain out to eat, and Rain accepts, despite knowing the project is due tomorrow, but it doesn’t seem like a big problem at the time. And he really wants to spend time with Phayu.
****
Phayu is busy at work when he receives the call from Bank. Why is Bank calling him now? Phayu has stopped all contact with Bank before he met Rain. To satisfy his curiosity, Phayu decides to answer the call, knowing that Bank will just keep calling otherwise.
“Bank,” Phayu says politely, but still in a tone that shows how uninterested he is right now.
“Phayu, I was interested if you wanted to meet with me,” Bank says in a flirty tone. “It’s been a while since we last saw each other. We should have some fun .”
The way Bank said fun alludes to sex, but Phayu isn’t interested at all. He doesn’t want Bank – Phayu ended things when Bank wanted more. Phayu could never give more, he simply didn’t fall in love.
“I’m busy, Bank,” Phayu replies in an uninterested tone.
“Are you sure, Phayu?” Bank asks playfully. “After all, I remember how I used to drive you crazy.”
Phayu resists the urge to roll his eyes at Bank’s weak useless attempts to get Phayu’s attention.
“I’m working,” Phayu says simply. “Either tell me what you want or I’m going to end the call right away.”
“Fine, fine,” Bank replies. “Can we meet?”
“No,” Phayu answers. “We ended things a while ago. Don’t call me anymore, Bank.”
Right after he finishes the sentence, Phayu hangs up. He doesn’t need to be bothered more than he already was. He should focus on work now.
Placing the phone on the desk, Phayu turns back to the blueprint. There’s not much left to do, but there’s still things that Phayu needs to do.
Phayu had some peace, so he did his work uninterrupted. Until his phone rings again. If this is Bank again, Phayu won’t even answer the call. It’s Saifah. Why is Saifah calling? Saifah almost never calls Phayu, and it definitely never happens unless something happened.
“Rain’s been waiting for you in the pouring rain,” Saifah says as soon as Phayu answers the call. “Hurry.”
Of course Phayu will hurry. Who knows how long Rain stood there in the rain? And why? What happened? Phayu is worried and he has to admit it to himself. He cares about Rain. He cares a lot.
Quickly picking his things up, Phayu rushes out of the office. He’s grateful he has his bike today, because it’ll make the drive home much faster and easier. Even with the rain pouring outside, it doesn’t matter.
“Where’s he?” Phayu asks the moment he enters the house.
Saifah doesn’t waste Phayu’s time, he just answers. “Upstairs, in your room.”
Phayu nods and goes upstairs to find his boy. The sight is almost heartbreaking. Phayu isn’t supposed to care this much, but he can’t help it. Not when Rain looks like a kicked puppy, not crying but definitely close to crying. Now it’s not the time to ask what happened. Now Phayu needs to comfort Rain. He crouches down, opening his arms and inviting Rain to come to him with a nod. Everything will be okay, Phayu will make sure of that.
Calming Rain down took some time, but in the end, it took less time than Phayu expected. Once Rain is in the shower, Phayu looks at the things Rain brought with him, noticing that there’s the same project Rain was working on last night. It’s not hard to conclude that Rain was doing this as an assignment and that Rain failed the said assignment, which can only be because of two reasons: either Rain didn’t submit the project in time or the professor didn’t like the way the blueprint looks. Either way, Phayu can understand that this is Rain’s mistake and he can’t lie to Rain about that. Phayu needs to be stern about this with Rain.
The moment Rain walks out of the shower, he panics and says, “No, Phi, don’t look at that.”
It’s too late, since Phayu has already seen the blueprint, but it’s enough for Phayu to connect the dots that this is exactly what made Rain so upset.
“This is the project you worked on last night, right?” Phayu asks, keeping his tone even. He doesn’t want to appear too soft, or to upset Rain even more.
Rain just nods, looking even more upset. Phayu really doesn’t want to make Rain cry, he just calmed Rain down.
“So, either the professor criticized your work or you didn’t get there on time to submit it, so the professor refused to accept it,” Phayu lists all the possible reasons why the work is here now instead with the professor. He keeps his tone gentle. He really doesn’t want to make Rain cry.
“I was late to submit the project,” Rain answers in a small voice.
“If you want me to console you, I can only tell you that everything the professor said is correct,” Phayu says calmly.
“I know it’s my fault,” Rain adds hurriedly. “I don’t want you to console me.”
Phayu looks at Rain after the last part, well aware that there’s the chance that Rain wants Phayu to console him, but Rain is also very stubborn. Phayu knows that much. Instead of making Rain feel even worse about the mistake, Phayu decides to share a story of his own.
“It’s good that you know and accept that it’s your fault, Rain,” Phayu starts gently. “The criticism and the pressure you felt today from the professor is only meant to prepare you for what awaits you in the real world, after university. It will make you stronger for the future.”
The way Rain listens so intently to Phayu, it makes Phayu smile fondly. It makes Phayu want to continue with his speech.
“For some people, this is simply a missed deadline, but for others, it’s a sign of responsibility. The professor wants you to be responsible,” Phayu continues in the same gentle tone. “I want you to be responsible.”
Rain looks even more interested in Phayu’s words now, if that’s possible. Though, it probably is. Just a single look at Rain’s face is enough to see how possible it is. Phayu wants to reward this, and he knows just the way.
“But I understand how you feel, Rain,” Phayu adds finally. “I still get criticized by clients.”
“Even you?” Rain asks wide-eyed. “ The P’Phayu?”
“The P’Phayu that’s standing in front of you, Rain,” Phayu replies, chuckling softly.
Rain is really adorable. Phayu can’t ignore that, and he doesn’t plan on trying. He moves closer to Rain and puts his arms around the boy.
“Let go of whatever already happened and focus on the new assignment,” Phayu says softly. “Do you understand, naughty boy?”
Despite the fact that Phayu told himself that he won’t fall for Rain (or for anyone else for that matter), he can’t help but be affectionate with Rain. It feels natural to show affection to the boy, because Phayu really likes seeing a smile on Rain’s face.
Now Phayu has to make sure that Rain dries his hair properly, so he doesn’t get sick.
“Dry your hair. Or you’ll get sick,” Phayu adds. “I’m too lazy to take care of you.”
Actually, that’s not true. Phayu would make time to take care of Rain. Maybe he’s really falling. Fast. It’s just that Phayu can’t let that happen. Not with his position in the mafia, not with all the problems he’d bring for his potential lover. It’s time for Phayu to step back.
Phayu just needs to make sure Rain eats something.
“I thought you said you won’t console me,” Rain replies in a slightly confused tone.
Phayu shakes his head fondly. He thought the same thing, but he can’t help it – he wants to console Rain, to make sure Rain is really alright with what happened.
Without a word, Phayu leaves the room. He’ll just ask Saifah to order some food for Rain, since Rain hasn’t eaten anything since last night. After Rain has some food, and maybe sleeps over, Phayu will send Rain back home – Phayu needs to distance himself. He doesn’t really believe Rain’s ready to be part of Phayu’s world, Rain’s too innocent for that.
Saifah’s still downstairs in the kitchen when Phayu goes there, which is good because Phayu doesn’t need to look for his brother.
“How’s your boy doing?” Saifah asks.
Phayu doesn’t feel the need to waste his time correcting his brother. Rain needs food and Phayu needs to make sure Rain has some soon.
“Much better now,” Phayu answers. “Can you get someone to buy food for Rain? He hasn’t eaten since yesterday?”
“I’ll take care of that for you,” Saifah promises. “Oh, and Phayu, P’Pakin called. He wants you to call him back as soon as possible.”
“I understand,” Phayu replies. “I’ll call him after Rain eats.”
This is something Phayu should’ve expected. Pakin’s call was bound to happen at any moment. Phayu wonders what the reason could be for the call, but he shouldn’t think too much about it. He hasn’t done anything to cause Pakin to be angry. This is probably about the race, but Phayu can’t be too sure.
“Sai, thank you,” Phayu adds, right before he leaves the room to go back to Rain.
Saifah nods in response.
Once Phayu’s back in the room, he informs Rain that the food will be there soon. Rain thanks Phayu for the food, and Phayu just wants Saifah to hurry with the food.
Thankfully, Saifah truly doesn’t take long. When he comes up with the takeaway container and the meal for Rain, Phayu takes it in a rush, thanking Saifah for help, and brings the food to Rain.
While Rain eats, Phayu just stares at him. Though, Phayu is also thinking about his next move. It should be clear enough. Phayu knows what he’s supposed to do, but it’s gonna hurt Rain. Actually, it’s probably going to hurt them both.
“What are you looking at, Phi?” Rain asks, breaking Phayu’s train of thought.
“At the one who’s eating,” Phayu answers, half-teasing.
“I can’t eat if you’re staring at me like this, Phi,” Rain protests loudly.
Phayu chuckles – the meal is mostly eaten already.
“Yet, the food is almost gone,” Phayu teases.
“It’s because I’m hungry,” Rain defends himself.
Cute. Rain really is cute. Even the messy eating is cute on him.
“I have to ask you seriously, how old are you? You still eat so messily,” Phayu says with a fond smirk. “I won’t date an immature boy.”
Or he won’t date Rain at all. Phayu knows it’s not safe for Rain to be involved with Phayu. And he needs to say that, but, for some reason, it’s really hard.
“I’m 19,” Rain says.
Phayu resists the urge to reply that he knows. Instead, he leans towards Rain to ask, “Does that mean I can kiss you?”
“You already kissed me, Phi,” Rain says, blushing.
So cute. So very cute. It is almost hard to resist.
“Does that really count?” Phayu teases. “All I could taste was blood.”
“Then,” Rain says with a flirty smile, “why don’t you kiss me again?”
Phayu wants to. He really does. Tasting Rain’s lips again would be amazing. And he’s so close to getting to do it again. Rain wants this too. Phayu leans in, so close to kissing Rain. He touches Rain’s face gently, lovingly. He leans in closer, but stops right before kissing Rain.
“Rain,” Phayu starts.
“Yes?” Rain asks, still keeping his eyes closed, ready for the kiss.
“Don’t come here anymore.”
Phayu knows this will break Rain, or at the very least confuse Rain. it’s more than understandable. But Phayu needs to stay strong and explain why to Rain without giving the actual reason.
The instantly sad expression on Rain’s face almost breaks Phayu’s resolve. The years of training to stay uninterested, emotionless, help him stay seemingly unaffected right now.
“What do you mean, Phi? Don’t joke like that,” Rain sniffs, trying to stop himself from crying. “Phi, are you already annoyed with me? I know I’m annoying. I’m sorry. I won’t bother you again,” Rain continues, as the tears roll down his face. “But, P’Phayu– P’Phayu, please don’t forbid me from coming here again.”
If Phayu finds out who made Rain think so badly about himself–
“Rain, listen to me,” Phayu replies in a serious tone. “I’m not annoyed with you.”
“But–”
“No buts, Rain. Listen to me,” Phayu says. “Have you ever heard the saying ‘before you design a house, you need to be able to design your life first’? Do you remember me telling you I want you to learn how to organize your time?”
Rain nods, showing he’s listening to Phayu. There’s no need for more than that, not right now.
“If you’re serious about pursuing me, you need to understand that I’m not looking for something short,” Phayu finishes. “If you aren’t ready for this, then don’t come here.”
It’s completely different from what Phayu planned, but he finds that this works much better. Maybe he doesn’t really want to push Rain away, even though it scares him to involve someone as innocent as Rain into the mafia world. Now, it all depends on whether Rain proves to Phayu that this is what he really wants.
“If I prove that I’m responsible, I can come here again, right?” Rain asks hopefully.
“If you prove it to me,” Phayu agrees. “For now, finish your food and sleep over tonight. I’ll drive you home tomorrow.”
It’s up to Rain now. Phayu has to wait and see what will happen now. And take care of the request from Pakin, since it’s not smart to keep Pakin waiting.
****
Days started passing so slowly for Rain. Ever since Phayu told Rain not to come to the garage or Phayu’s house again. It’s fair, Rain understands, but it still makes Rain sad.
The sadness Rain feels shows in the way he works on. He doesn’t feel very motivated, despite knowing that he can see Phayu again if he proves he can be responsible about school work.
Another thing that bothers Rain a lot is that the messages seem to come more often. They’re always the same. Always informing Rain he should stay away from Phayu. Except, occasionally, there would be a message about Rain himself: ‘I’m watching you’ or ‘Do you really think someone like Phayu would want to be with someone like you’, to name a few. Rain tried his best to ignore them, but the messages come at the worst of moments. Like when Rain really needs to focus on his work. And whatever the message is, it always kills Rain’s mood.
Sky has tried to get Rain to talk. He has tried multiple times, but Rain has avoided each time more or less successfully. Mostly because Rain needs to prove he’s responsible to Phayu. And he isn’t ready to tell Sky about this. Not yet.
‘I see you’re finally listening.’ – the message feels just like every single one before. Except, this one is making Rain feel even more unsettled than usual. Who is sending these messages? And why to Rain? What has Rain done to this person to make them send so many messages? Maybe Rain should reply. Maybe if Rain replies the person will leave him alone.
‘I’m sorry, but do I know you?’ Rain sends a quick reply before putting his phone in his pocket.
There. This should help. Right?
Just as easily as all the others, this message is forgotten as soon as Rain starts working on his blueprint. He still feels sad, because he can’t go and see Phayu. Has he started falling for Phayu? No, there’s no way. It’s just that the senior is nice. Nothing more.
It’s been over a week. Not only is Rain not allowed to go to the garage, but he’s also not getting any messages from Phayu. Rain hasn’t really sent any to get replies to, but still. Why can’t Phayu text first? If Rain cried about it, he would never admit it out loud.
Going to the faculty feels like dragging his feet with each step Rain makes. He’s not feeling too excited about working on the final project. Most of his friends think that Rain’s behaving like this because of the professor’s criticism. It’s not true at all – Rain bounces from that instantly. This is completely different. And Rain can’t tell anyone, because everyone thinks Rain hates Phayu. Up until recently, Rain thought the same. Now, he’s not so sure how he feels. And he’s trying really hard not to think about it.
When Rain walks into the studio classroom, Som, Ple and Sky are there. Rain gives Som a polite, silent wai and waves to his friends, before sitting at the corner desk. Som says something about the professor criticizing Som’s creativity, but Rain’s not really listening. It’s not about the professor.
“I’ll buy you lunch,” Som offers.
Rain feels almost touched by the offer, but he can’t accept it. He needs to prove to Phayu that he’s responsible.
Even Ple tries to convince Rain to join, but he declines, saying that he already ate. Sky sits next to Rain and Rain looks at his friend.
“Rain, are you sure you’re okay?” Sky asks.
“I’m fine,” Rain answers.
For a moment, Rain considers faking a smile. But that never works for Sky.
“Is this about the guy you are pursuing?” Sky asks. “That’s P’Phayu, right?”
“Yes,” Rain says.
What’s the point in trying to hide this from Sky?
“Do you like him?” Sky asks softly.
Rain opens his mouth to answer with a loud and stubborn no, but Sky stops him.
“Before you answer me, look into your heart,” Sky says.
After that, Sky leaves to get lunch and Rain stays in the classroom alone. Rain has to admit that talking with Sky made him feel better and more determined to do his best. He can do it.
Finally, Rain has some sort of plan. It mostly involves studying or working on his projects whenever he doesn’t have classes, which is fine. It’s very nice that he has company while working on the projects – his friends are really great. Well, Sky and Ple are great at working, while Por and Sig are more laid-back, but Rain enjoys the friendship moments a lot.
All five of them are working on their final projects, to different extents, and they all help each other out with planning, designs, ideas and anything else they might need. It feels amazing to be part of such a group.
During one of the study sessions, Rain gets another message from the same unknown number as always. He doesn’t understand why now. This time it’s targeting Rain more directly, with the comment of how Rain shouldn’t be studying architecture because there’s no way Rain’s smart enough for that. To make things worse, Rain is missing Phayu like crazy, even if he would never admit that out loud. At least the messages aren’t telling him to stay away from Phayu.
Still, Rain needs a break now. He can’t. He can’t take this anymore.
Sky follows after Rain and sits right next to Rain on the stairs outside. Maybe Rain can talk to Sky right now. About Phayu and maybe even about messages. Telling someone is smart, right? But should he do it now?
“Sky, a few days ago, you asked me if I like P’Phayu, and I still don’t know if I like him, but I don’t want to disappoint him,” Rain says.
“Not knowing is alright, Rain,” Sky replies softly. “And I don’t think you’ll disappoint him.”
“What if he doesn’t want to see me?” Rain asks, not really expecting an answer. “What if I’m too annoying?”
“Rain, do you know that I don’t mean it in a bad way when I say you’re annoying,” Sky answers. “Your persistence is admirable. And I’m sure P’Phayu would agree.”
Sky’s answer makes Rain beam excitedly. Before Rain’s phone beeps again, and Rain frowns knowing this is probably another message from the same person.
“What’s wrong?” Sky asks, and Rain wants to ask how Sky saw that immediately.
“I’ve been getting messages from someone most of the semester,” Rain says. “They started with the warning that I should stay away from Phayu, but then the messages switched and became more about me.”
“Do you know who’s been sending you the messages?” Sky asks, in a suddenly serious tone.
“No,” Rain answers, shaking his head. “It’s an unknown number.”
“Did you tell someone about them? Your mama?”
Rain shakes his head again. “No. You’re the first one I told.”
Sky nods. “We should try and find out who’s been sending them.”
“I’m ignoring them already. They can’t really do anything to me,” Rain replies, shrugging.
“If you’re sure,” Sky says. “Let’s go back inside and work on the projects.”
Rain’s determination was stronger after the talk with Sky. He also gained the courage to go and talk to Phayu. That’s why Rain is at the garage now, even though Phayu told him not to come there anymore.
In front of the entrance, Rain walks next to someone who bumps into him. It doesn’t really bother Rain, it just makes him confused because the woman doesn’t even bother to apologize. She just looks at Rain as if he has done something wrong to her.
“How rude,” the woman says in an unpleasant tone. “Not even apologizing to a senior. These young people.”
Rain frowns in confusion. She doesn’t even look that much older than Rain. Why is she so rude?
“Khun Beam,” Aon walks up to them. “Is there anything else you need?”
“No,” she answers. “I’ll leave right away.”
As soon as the rude woman leaves, Aon looks more relaxed.
“P’Aon,” Rain greets the older man with a soft smile, which Aon gladly returns.
“Khun Rain, boss said we can’t let you inside the office,” Aon informs Rain.
“I understand, Phi,” Rain replies. “May I borrow the plastic chair instead?”
That seems like a good solution that both Aon and Nui can accept. Rain takes the chair from Aon’s hands and finds a good spot in the shade so the sun doesn’t hit Rain directly.
Rain focuses on his work and types on his laptop. He can do this.
“Didn’t I tell you not to come here?” Phayu asks sternly.
Rain didn’t even notice when Phayu arrived, but that doesn’t really matter.
“I wanted a change of scenery,” Rain replies smiling.
Phayu looks at Rain with the annoyed expression.”Then you should go to the cafe or the faculty.”
No, Rain doesn’t want to go to a cafe or the faculty. He wants to be here, he wants to see Phayu, and Phayu to see him, so Rain can prove he’s actually learning.
“I’ll sit here quietly and won’t bother anyone,” Rain says. “I promise.”
To make his point even stronger, Rain lifts the laptop up and sits cross legged on the chair.
“It’s bothering my line of sight,” Phayu replies.
Rain almost wants to give up. Does Phayu really not want him here? No, he can’t give up now. Phayu and he made a deal – if Rain proves he’s responsible, he’s welcome back.
Maybe it’s just time for a different method.
“I just wanted to see you, Phi,” Rain says softly, honestly. “Just for a moment.”
Rain can see the softening expression of Phayu’s face. He can see it, even if it’s barely visible. It makes Rain feel proud of himself.
“How many assignments do you have left?” Phayu asks. “Are you finished with your final project?”
“I’m working on it now,” Rain answers proudly. “Here, see!”
“That’s why I told you to go to a cafe or the faculty,” Phayu says.
“You wanted me to be responsible, Phi,” Rain starts. “Isn’t it better if I come here where I’ll focus on the work instead of going to a cafe or to the faculty where I'll be distracted?”
With a sigh, Phayu walks away, and Rain counts this as a win. Because it is. He got Phayu not to send him away again.
****
Things changed.
Not that Phayu hates the change, but he thrives on a routine. He always has.
But this time, Phayu loves the change. He loves the challenge Rain brought into his life. Of course, Phayu is no stranger to challenges, his lifestyle is proof of that.
One change that Phayu adores about this is the fact that he knows Rain is his forever. Rain who tried so hard to prove to Phayu that he can be responsible, just like Phayu wanted Rain to. Rain who would argue with Phayu to prove his point, and Phayu loves their teasing banter. Rain snuck into Phayu’s heart even more when he stood in the pouring rain for hours, just to wait for Phayu and to share the news of the professor’s praise.
Yes, Phayu loves Rain. There’s not a single doubt about it.
Which brings Phayu back to the current moment, and chatting with Rain. Phayu promised a reward if Rain does well on his exam, but what Phayu didn’t say yet is that he’ll take Rain out on a date soon – there should be an actual first date. Rain’s reply makes Phayu chuckle, because Rain is definitely teasing Phayu back at this point.
It’s been so long since Phayu has actually dated anyone. He had flings with people, because that suited Phayu’s busy and often overfilled schedule. There have been a few people who tried to get more than what Phayu was offering, because they weren’t ready to accept that Phayu isn’t interested. Two of them still aren’t, despite Phayu ending things up over six months ago with Bank or over a year ago with Beam. Those two were the most persistent of everyone Phayu has been with. And they both seem more determined recently.
But none of that matters anymore. Not to Phayu.
Today is the day of the date. Phayu took his bike and an extra helmet, with a plan on riding a bike with Rain on the pillion. Streets of Bangkok tend to be busy and sometimes, it’s hard to drive a car and get somewhere, while it’s easier to move around with a big bike.
Phayu stops in front of Rain’s house, waiting for Rain to come. When Rain comes outside, Phayu notices an adorable pout on Rain’s face, making him want to kiss it away. Now is not the time for that, so Phayu just asks what’s wrong and if Rain still wants to go on the date. Rain replies with a bright smile and enthusiastic nod to which Phayu smiles back.
They’re going to the movies and later they’ll go and have lunch together. Phayu plans on indulging Rain very much today.
The movie is okay, Phayu at least thinks, but most of his attention was on Rain while Rain watched the movie so intently. It’s really adorable.
After the movie is over, they walk outside, holding hands. Phayu is smiling, pleased that Rain is enjoying himself this much.
“Are you hungry, sweet boy?” Phayu asks.
Rain nods. “I’m starving, Phi!”
Phayu shakes his head fondly. “What do you want to eat today?”
“Why are you indulging me today?” Rain asks, in a slightly accusing tone.
Not that Phayu can blame the boy for being suspicious. Phayu teases Rain often.
“Because I want to indulge you,” Phayu answers honestly.
“I’ll become spoiled,” Rain comments.
“You can try, but I’ll discipline you,” Phayu replies.
Rain pouts. “Come on, Phi, I’m obviously a good boy. I’m obedient and don’t talk back to you.”
Phayu laughs. Rain is a good boy, but he also loves to push back.
“So what do you want to eat today?” Phayu asks again. Rain makes the same face of disbelief. “Don’t make that face, please. I’m not teasing you. I just want you to be happy today.”
“Korean food,” Rain answers after thinking for a minute.
“Are you serious? Korean food?” Phayu asks in a teasing tone.
“Yes,” Rain replies, smiling.
“Don’t you look Korean enough?” Phayu teases.
“I thought you said you won’t tease me,” Rain says.
Before Phayu can reply to Rain’s comment, there’s a surprised question from Sky. “Ai Rain? P’Phayu? Are you holding hands?”
Rain lets go of Phayu’s hand quickly when he hears Sky. It makes Phayu slightly sad, but he understands Rain needs to come to terms with telling his friends.
“Are you here to watch the movie?” Rain asks.
“That’s right,” Sky says, looking pointedly at the popcorn bowl he’s holding in his arm.
“Did you enjoy it?” Rain asks, still focused on the movie. “Is the popcorn good? What flavor?”
So cute. So very cute.
“The villain was too predictable,” Sky answers dryly.
One thing is obvious about this, and that is that Sky is indulging Rain with all the questions, even though Sky is more than aware of what is going on.
“I thought so, too,” Rain replies.
Somehow, all three of them end up at the restaurant together. Phayu didn’t really want to send Rain’s best friend away, and there’s also the fact that Phayu is curious whether Rain will admit they’re dating or not.
The conversation flows naturally, leading to mention of Ple – Som’s sister, if Phayu remembers correctly. Learning that Rain used to want to date the girl sparks Phayu’s jealousy, and the fact that Rain even started pursuing Phayu is because he wanted to prove Phayu is a bad guy to the girl doesn’t sit right with Phayu. But Rain is extra sweet now, so Phayu decides to just enjoy the moment and maybe tease the boy a bit later.
Rain excuses himself to go to the bathroom once they’re done eating, and Phayu is left alone with Sky. truthfully, Phayu’s curious about Sky’s changed expression from the amused to serious once Rain leaves.
“Is there anything wrong?” Phayu asks cautiously.
“P’Phayu, has Rain told you about the messages he’s been getting since you two started getting closer?” Sky asks.
The words put Phayu on alert. What messages? From who?
“What messages?” Phayu asks in a worried tone. “Rain didn’t tell me anything.”
“I don’t know much,” Sky answers. “I just know Rain has been getting messages telling him he should stay away from you. And later messages about him, but he didn’t tell me about them.”
This doesn’t sound good at all. Phayu is very worried about this, because it sounds like someone seems to target Rain. And Phayu doesn’t like that one bit.
“Thank you for telling me,” Phayu says. “I’ll pay attention to that.”
Sky seems pleased with Phayu’s reaction or at least Phayu thinks so. Either way, Rain comes back so any conversation about the messages stops.
Soon after, Phayu and Rain say bye to Sky and they leave to go to Phayu’s house – their home. Once again, Phayu’s very thankful Rain’s mother gave him her number so he can call her when he wants Rain to stay over.
****
Rain is so happy. Nothing is going to bring his mood down. He’s dating Phayu and he’s very sure he feels more than just a like. Even if Rain never thought it would be possible.
Another thing that happened is Phayu insisting two of them have a serious conversation about the messages Rain has been getting. Rain doesn’t know how Phayu found out about those, but he told his boyfriend everything. And they agreed Rain will just block the number, which Rain did. And since then, there have been no more messages. That was such a relief.
The exams are done, but Phayu is busy with his work so Rain is staying over at his parents’ house. When did it stop being his too? Probably with all the sleeping over at Phayu’s, Rain simply started calling Phayu’s house his home. After all, Phayu calls it theirs too. So why can’t Rain?
When Rain is about to go home from the faculty, a senior stops him. The man is dressed in casual clothes and Rain doesn’t recognize him, but Rain is taught to be a helpful and kind junior. To make Phayu proud of him. That’s why Rain follows the senior into a classroom where a familiar woman is sitting.
A thought crosses Rain’s mind as he walks in the classroom after the senior – who are these people?
“So, you’re Rain?” the woman sneers. “I expected you to be prettier in person.”
“Yes, this is Rain,” the man says. “I told you he’s nothing special.”
“But what would Phayu see in this ordinary boy?” the woman asks.
Rain doesn’t like the way this sounds.
“It’s not like it’s going to be a problem much longer,” the man says. “Will it?”
“No, of course not,” she says.
The way they both look at Rain makes Rain deeply uncomfortable. Something’s not right. He feels something’s terribly wrong. On instinct, Rain reaches for his phone to call someone.
“We can’t have you calling someone now,” the woman says coldly. “Give me the phone.”
“No!” Rain refuses.
Not that it helped any. The man next to him simply took the phone out of Rain’s hand, easily overpowering Rain.
“This could have been easy,” the man says. “But since you want to make it difficult, I’ll give you difficult.”
Rain feels sudden sharp pain on the side of his head, making him lose balance and fall.
“Don’t worry, we’ll make sure you’re not found,” the woman says. “Not that anyone will look. Least of all Phayu.”
It doesn’t take long for everything to turn black.

Rain not replying to a message is weird. Rain not replying to a message from Phayu is very weird. Phayu tries to rationalize this – that Rain is just too focused on the work, that Rain just put his notifications to silent. There could be so many reasons explaining why Rain isn’t replying. It doesn’t have to be anything bad.
It’s just–
It’s just that Phayu has a bad feeling. About the silence on Rain’s end.
Phayu is still in the office, staying late to catch up with all the work, because he’s going to have to take a couple of days off due to the job he needs to do for Pakin.
The beep pulls Phayu out of his train of thought. It’s from Rain, the notification sound is the one Phayu set specifically for Rain.
‘This isn’t working. I don’t want to see you anymore.’
The words make Phayu freeze for a moment. Why would Rain send him this? It doesn’t sound like Rain. It doesn't feel like Rain.
Just to be sure, Phayu sends a message to Sky, asking if Sky has seen Rain. Sky’s reply is quick, informing Phayu that Sky hasn’t seen Rain since their classes ended earlier that day.
This makes Phayu feel even more anxious. Something’s very wrong.
It’s time to ask for a favor and Phayu knows exactly who to ask. He only needs to call, and the person will know Phayu needs help.
Maybe Phayu should tell his brother too, just to make sure Saifah knows.
Like Phayu expected, Chai is quick with figuring out where Rain’s phone is. Phayu can only hope Rain is there as well. Actually, Phayu refuses to believe otherwise.
“Phayu, I have the location,” Chai says. “Be careful.”
“I always am, P’Chai,” Phayu replies. “You taught me well.”
It’s true, Phayu and Saifah were both taught by Chai when they first started working for Pakin. They have risen up in ranks since then.
Chai doesn’t comment anything in response, he only nods.
“Don’t get yourself killed, big brother,” Saifah teases. “That won’t help Rain.”
Phayu appreciates Saifah’s attempt to lighten the mood. It’s something Phayu needs right now, so he can go and rescue Rain with a clear head.
“My team and I will go after you,” Chai informs Phayu in a voice that leaves no room for argument. “Just as back-up.”
Phayu nods. “Thank you, Phi.”
Chai is certain that this is the location where Phayu’ll find Rain, but Phayu is still worried. Mostly because he doesn’t know who would do this. Sure, Phayu is part of the mafia, in a high ranking position, and he has enemies, but why would they take Rain and then send a message from Rain’s phone that they’re breaking up.
Before going to rescue his sweet boy, Phayu must get ready. The plan is simple enough, with Phayu and a few men coming in first and attacking, followed by Chai’s team that will be right outside of the building where Rain is kept.
When Phayu gets to those who touched his sweet boy, he will make them pay. And Rain better be unharmed or else those won’t live to see the next day.
For a brief moment, Phayu considers bringing a gun with him, aware that the bodyguards will have guns as well. Guns aren’t Phayu’s weapon of choice, he prefers being close to the victim – and he can be very vicious when he needs to be.
In the end, Phayu decides against bringing the gun, opting for his bare hands instead. It’s not like he can’t fight without any weapon.
The first group, the group Phayu’s leading, is split into two cars, for easier transport. Chai’s group will follow about thirty minutes after.
The drive to the address is silent – everyone is preparing for the fight that’s about to happen. Fights are nothing strange in any of their lives, but it never hurts to be prepared.
Phayu observes the building from the backseat of the car. It’s a warehouse, an abandoned one that Pakin used to store additional vehicles. Just that piece of information is enough to make Phayu worry that it is really an enemy of his or Pakin’s who took Rain.
“We arrived, K’Phayu,” the driver says in an even tone.
Phayu nods, before exiting the car. He would storm into the warehouse alone, but he wants his men to follow him.
“I’m going in first,” Phayu commands. He changed the plan, but he doesn't care. Not when Rain’s in danger. “Wait for my signal.”
No one dares to argue against Phayu’s command, which works perfectly for Phayu right now. It’s time for action.
Walking into the warehouse, as silent as he can, Phayu checks his surroundings carefully. He has a feeling Rain is here. A very strong feeling.
Finally, he walks into the big open space where he sees two very familiar people – Beam and Bank. Phayu's blood runs cold right at that moment. He scans the room, looking for Rain. His sweet boy has to be there.
“What are we going to do now, P’Beam?” Bank asks in a too sweet of a tone. “Who is going to date Phayu ?”
Beam lets out a cold laugh, before pulling something that looks like a weapon, but Phayu isn't sure what kind.
“You didn't really think you’d be the one, did you now?” Beam laughs even more coldly.
Phayu is ready to attack them both. If they’re the one who took Rain–
If they dared harm Rain–
“I helped you,” Bank protests loudly.
“For your own selfish reason,” Beam replies. “Don’t pretend you helped out of any respect for me,” she adds. “And besides, I can’t have any competition.”
The anger is rising inside Phayu’s core. He’ll make them pay.
“P’Phayu will never want you!”
Rain’s voice. It’s Rain. Rain is here.
Phayu turns in the direction of the voice. The sight is almost terrifying. Phayu has seen worse , but never on someone he cares about. And he cares about Rain.
“Shut up, you stupid brat!” Beam threatens.
“Or else?” Rain asks.
Phayu wants to be proud of Rain, because Rain is being so strong and brave, but worry is winning. Especially since Rain’s full of bruises on his face. And probably on the body too, but Phayu can’t see that.
“Or I’ll make you,” Bank adds.
“I’d like to see you try,” Rain replies sassily. “P’Phayu will come for me, and you two are just fucking jealous!”
“He won’t,” Beam gloats. “He thinks you broke up with him.”
As much as Phayu wants to reassure the boy, after seeing the sullen and sad look on Rain’s face, Phayu can’t give up his position. Not yet. He’ll wait just a bit longer.
“He will,” Rain responds stubbornly.
For a brief moment, Phayu and Rain share a look. Rain sees him. Phayu smiles at Rain, hoping to show he’s here for Rain.
When Bank walks to Rain with attention to harm him, Phayu knows it’s time for action. The moment Bank is too close to Rain, Phayu grabs Banks arm and pulls him back.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Phayu asks, his voice promising danger.
“P’Phayu!” Rain says. “You’re here.”
“I’m here, sweet boy,” Phayu says softly. He stands next to Rain and lets the boy lean on him, while Phayu just wraps his arms around Rain’s waist, holding Rain close. “No one will hurt you again, I promise.”
And he means it – Phayu is not someone who would make any promise lightly.
“I’ll deal with the two of you later,” Phayu says in a dangerously low tone. “No one touches my Rain. Especially not someone as pathetic as you.”
“Phayu, I–”
Bank looks surprised at the sharpness of Phayu’s voice, but Phayu doesn’t care about Bank. Beam looks indifferent. That’s something that Phayu used to understand, but right now, he hates how little she cares.
Neither of them are important right now though.
Rain is the only important one.
“Phi,” Rain asks in a pained voice. “Can we go home?”
How could Phayu ever refuse? He’ll do anything Rain asks from him.
“Of course, darling,” Phayu answers.
Phayu notices that the bodyguards are getting inside the warehouse, and he just knows Chai has arrived. This is a relief for Phayu, because he can leave. As much as he wants to personally make both Bank and Beam pay, Rain is the priority right now. And Rain is hurt, and weak if the way he is leaning onto Phayu right now says anything.
“You should go home with your boy, Phayu,” Chai says calmly. “I’ll make sure they’re punished.”
While Chai sounds perfectly calm, Phayu has no doubt that Bank and Beam won’t live to see tomorrow. And Phayu knows he can trust his mentor.
“Thank you, Phi,” Phayu replies.
With ease, Phayu lifts Rain into his arms, carrying Rain out of the warehouse. Two of the bodyguards follow after Phayu to help if necessary, while the rest of them stay with Chai.
Phayu carries Rain into one of the cars outside, placing Rain gently on the backseat before going to the other side and sitting next to Rain. Rain snuggles close to Phayu.
Even though Phayu wants to go home with Rain, he can’t do that yet. Rain needs to be seen by a doctor. As soon as the doctor checks Rain up, Phayu will fulfill his promise of taking Rain home.
“We’re going to the hospital first, so the doctor can look at your injuries,” Phayu says softly.
Rain nods, but he’s obviously unhappy about this. Phayu understands that, but this has to be done.
The check up is quick, and the doctor tells Rain that he needs to rest and let the bruises recover. Luckily, there are no dangerous injuries. That’s good. Bruises will heal quickly.
“Can we go home now, Phi?” Rain asks sweetly.
“We can,” Phayu agrees.
Phayu can’t deny Rain this, not after everything that Rain’s been through that day. And, to be completely honest, Phayu wants to be home too. He wants to have Rain sleep in his arms again, and he plans on doing exactly that.
Text from Saifah informs Phayu that his brother will be staying with his girlfriend, leaving Phayu and Rain the whole house to themselves. Something Phayu is very grateful for, even if only for Rain’s sense of security.
“I’m tired, Phi,” Rain says honestly. “But I want to clean their touch off my skin.”
“Why don’t we take a bath together?” Phayu offers, hoping it’s enough to calm Rain’s anxiety.
Rain nods, smiling so brightly. “Please, Phi.”
There's a certain ease around them, especially noticeable when Phayu helps Rain take the clothes off. It’s calming, almost sweet, but also uniquely theirs.
Phayu sits in the bath behind Rain, and Rain instantly leans on Phayu. Poor boy is so exhausted. Phayu helps Rain wash, being extremely careful over Rain’s tender and bruised skin.
“Does it hurt?” Phayu asks, checking up on Rain.
“No, Phi,” Rain replies.
For a while, they just sit there in the bathtub, surrounded by the pleasantly warm water, holding onto each other.
“Rain, I’m really sorry they hurt you,” Phayu says.
“It’s not your fault, P’Phayu,” Rain replies. “You don’t need to apologize.”
Phayu isn’t as convinced – it is his fault because he didn’t pay enough attention to what’s happening to Rain. Not until it was almost too late.
“They hurt you,” Phayu insists.
“Because they’re bad people and let their jealousy win,” Rain says softly. “Not because of you, Phi.”
Right now, Phayu is ready to admit how much he loves Rain. he has loved Rain for a while now, but he hasn’t said anything. And now, he doesn’t want to wait any longer.
Or maybe, Phayu should wait just a bit longer until they’re out of water and safely in the bed. Yes, that’s what he’ll do.
“Let’s go to bed,” Phayu says gently.
Rain moves slightly, letting Phayu get out of the bathtub first. Phayu helps Rain get out as well and then dries Rain’s body with a fluffy towel.
Two of them settle in bed, facing each other. It’s so domestic, so blissful, that Phayu almost forgets about Rain’s injuries. Almost.
“I really like you, Phi,” Rain says in a soft voice. “Actually, I think it’s been more than a like for a while now.”
Phayu smiles, looking at Rain with love in his eyes. It takes him a moment to formulate the response.
“I really like you too,” Phayu replies. “I love you, Rain.”
“You love me?” Rain asks, surprised. “Really, Phi?”
“Really,” Phayu admits, leaning towards Rain and giving the boy a soft kiss on the forehead.
Confessing how they feel for each other is a big deal. For Phayu especially, since he hasn’t ever fallen in love with anyone before. No one until Rain. Until his Rain.
Phayu doesn’t really expect Rain to say it back, not yet – Rain will say those three words when he’s ready. But Phayu had to say them now, after almost losing Rain.
He’ll never let this happen again.
Never again.
