I'll Follow You Into the Dark

Summary:

After more than 40 years together, Dean passes away peacefully in Castiel's arms. This story is told from Castiel's perspective, as he recalls their life together, as he now prepares to die a full ten years later.

Notes:

Although this story deals with both Dean and Castiel's death, I chose not to use an MCD archive warning because the deaths do not come as a surprise to the reader nor are they tragic harrowing deaths. While this is a heavy theme, I have endeavored to write a peaceful end to them both that hopefully will uplift rather than sadden.

I want to thank Bsavila6789 for inspiring the idea for this story. I bet you couldn't have imagined the giant can of worms you opened up with our casual text exchange, but I am so glad you did. And that's why, Barbara, this one is for you.

And as always and forever, I have to thank Re_Create for her tireless work in editing the flotsam and jetsam of my ideas. Your interest and your tender care for my words is truly amazing. I can't do this without you. No, seriously I can't, so don't ever stop :-). Thank you, my friend.

Work Text:

Dean’s final day was as ordinary as any they had come to cherish in their years together. He spent it doing what he loved—tinkering with Baby in the morning, enjoying a slice of pie at their favorite diner, and watching the sunset hand in hand with Castiel from their much-used porch swing. There was no grand battle, no last heroic stand—just the quiet closing of a book that had been filled with epic tales.

The manner of Dean’s passing also filled Castiel with a profound sense of gratitude. At the end of a near lifetime marked by turbulence, danger, and ever-looming threats, the peacefulness of Dean’s departure from this world was a gift Castiel hadn’t dared to hope for. In many ways, he believes it reflected Dean’s own wishes—for himself and for Castiel. Dean wanted a simple life, and a quiet end when the time came. He wanted no regrets, no unfinished business, just peace. And that’s precisely what he was granted. It’s what they both were granted. After years of storm, Dean’s departure was a gentle whisper.

Yet, Castiel found himself adrift in a sea of grief in the wake of Dean’s passing. After so many years of a shared life and love, the weight of sorrow anchored him to a world that suddenly felt devoid of light, as though a part of his very essence had been torn away with Dean's last breath.

And in the decade since that final day with Dean, Castiel grappled with a profound, enveloping loneliness. The house they had made a home echoed with memories, each room, each object was a story of the life they had built. The silence that echoed within was a stark contrast to the laughter and conversations and the unique sounds of pleasure only their union could create.

Only after Dean’s death did Castiel regret returning from the Empty in human form. Because he was stripped of his angelic Grace, Castiel was afforded the opportunity to experience the world in a way he never truly had before; colors seemed brighter, tastes more vivid, and emotions more acute. The joy of a well-made meal, the warmth of the sun on his skin, and the complexity and clarity of his feelings for Dean unfolded before him.

Castiel had learned to interact with the world without the safety net of celestial abilities. No longer could he heal with a touch, teleport to a distant location, or access the vast knowledge of the universe directly through his mind. He learned to drive, cook, and care for physical ailments—skills Dean often guided him through with a mix of patience and humor. He discovered the beauty in vulnerability, the strength in perseverance, and the value of being fully present. He found joy in the small victories of human life, from mastering a new skill to simply enjoying a peaceful moment in the company of the man he loved.

Yet, in the immediate aftermath of Dean’s death, the thought of continuing without him was unbearable to Castiel. He pondered the notion of ending his own life, a desperate attempt to escape the pain that seemed insurmountable. Yet, even in the depths of his despair, Castiel understood there could be consequences for such an action. He feared that taking his own life might mean forsaking the possibility of being reunited with Dean in Heaven, and that fear is what held him back from the edge.

Castiel was trapped in his grief, unable to see a path forward without Dean, yet equally unable to risk condemning himself to an eternity without the chance of seeing his beloved again. It was a paradox that weighed heavily on his soul, a constant battle between the desire to escape the pain and the hope of a reunion.

Instead, he clung to his memories of Dean, allowing them to be a source of strength even as they were a reminder of his absence. The lessons Dean had taught him about determination, fighting for what is right, and the capacity for love within the human heart became the foundation upon which Castiel began to rebuild his reason for living.

As days turned into months and months into years, Castiel honored Dean’s memory by living a life that reflected their shared values. He engaged in acts of kindness, offered protection to those in need, and spread love in a world that often seemed devoid of it. In short, Castiel came to embody the legacy of the man who had changed his life in countless ways.

Now, Castiel’s own time on earth grows short. Here in the sanctuary of his home surrounded by loved ones, gentle yet persistent thoughts of Dean wash over him like waves. The past unfurls. Memories flicker like old film reels—moments that define their connection and profound bond.

The darkness was suffocating, a tangible weight pushing against my Grace. Hell’s corridors echoed with the cries of the damned, a cacophony of despair and agony that shook me to my core. Yet, my purpose was clear: to save Dean Winchester. His soul was like a guiding light in the darkness, not for its purity but for its strength and its capacity for great love and great destruction. This paradox is what made him essential in the Grand Design, a key player in the plans of Heaven. The fabric of destiny itself hinged on this man and the decisions he would come to make.

Finding Dean was not a matter of sight but of sensing the unique signature of his soul—a task hampered by the overwhelming presence of evil. Hell sought to disguise him, to assimilate his essence into its own. But they could not conceal that flicker of defiance in the darkness, a soul that refused to be broken despite the unimaginable tortures inflicted upon it. It was not the unblemished nature of a saint, but a purity born of love, sacrifice, and unwavering resolve—a soul that had endured yet remained untainted. These were the very attributes Heaven saw as Dean Winchester’s defining traits, his true strength.

I found him chained and broken, yet his spirit undimmed. With a burst of celestial power that illuminated the darkest corners of Hell, I shattered his bonds.

Dean’s eyes, wide with shock and pain, met mine and in that gaze, I saw the myriad of human emotions—fear, disbelief, hope—and the human capacity to endure. I wrapped him in my Grace, shielding him from the horrors of Hell as we ascended, leaving behind the screams, the heat, and the despair.

Dean Winchester was saved.

I laid Dean to rest in his grave, watching over him as life returned to his body. It was a moment of rebirth, not just for Dean, but, though not as clear to me at the time, for me as well.

Castiel’s eyes flicker open in confusion as something cold brushes against his lips.

“It’s ok, Dad. It’s me, Claire,” she soothes as she tenderly brings ice chips to Castiel’s lips, her movements deliberate and reverent. Kaia whispers words of support as Claire’s tears spill over. Castiel’s eyes fill with a gratitude he hopes he can convey, as words are no longer possible.

Standing before Dean in that dilapidated barn in Pontiac, Illinois, after pulling him from the depths of Hell, I was overwhelmed by a sense of purpose, a divine mission that had led me to him. Yet, as I gazed upon this human, marked by the scars of eternal damnation yet standing resolutely before me, I felt something stir within me, something unfamiliar and unsettling.

“I’m the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition,” I declared. A curiosity, an intrigue about the man whose soul had endured so much, danced through my body.

Dean’s confusion, his disbelief, and the fear in his eyes were reactions I had anticipated, but what I hadn’t expected was the pull I felt towards him. It was duty that brought me to that barn, but it was something else–something deeply human–that made me linger, that made me want to understand the man before me. At that moment, in that rundown barn, with dust motes dancing in shafts of light, I stood not just as an Angel of the Lord but as a being on the cusp of discovering the vast, tumultuous glory of loving Dean Winchester.

“Don’t jump on the bed, kids. C’mon. Grandpa needs to rest. Give him a kiss, and you and your sister go play outside,” Castiel hears their son Bobby say.

He wants to tell him it’s ok. He is happy to have them nearby. Instead, he reaches out a trembling hand. It’s grasped by Grace, their beautiful girl. “I’ve got you, Dad. We’re here. We all are.”

Castiel thinks he squeezes her hand, but he can’t be sure. Next, he feels tiny arms wrap around his neck and little kisses on his cheek... “I love you, Grandpa...”

In the ‘beautiful room,’ I stood on the precipice of a choice that would redefine my very existence. Amidst all the beauty that Heaven could conjure, it was Dean’s presence, his determination and vulnerability that captivated me entirely. The realization of what I was feeling and what I was willing to risk, manifested within me as a revelation far more jarring than any divine command I had ever received.

As I looked into Dean’s eyes, filled with an earnest plea and an unyielding strength, something within me shifted irrevocably. I had always believed my loyalty to Heaven to be absolute, my purpose defined by the will of God. Yet, in this resplendent room, facing the man whose life had so quickly and unmistakably become intertwined with mine, I understood the true nature of my devotion.

The decision to rebel against Heaven for Dean was the manifestation of this devotion. As I made my choice, I did so with a heart no longer solely divine but undeniably human in its capacity to love. In choosing Dean, in choosing love, I discovered my true purpose. This realization, this acceptance of love, was both my most extraordinary act of defiance and my most profound moment of clarity.

Castiel can hear Sam and Eileen’s whispering voices. He is happy they came, yet distressed to hear the pain in Sam’s voice, the strain of unshed tears in his question. “Is there anything we can do, Doctor?” The doctor’s voice is professional yet sympathetic when he responds. “I’m sorry, there is nothing left to do for him. At this point, it’s about making him comfortable... and saying your goodbyes.”

Even in his semi-aware state, Castiel feels an overwhelming sadness, not for himself, of course, but for them. Instead, he feels a stirring of joy knowing he will reunite with Dean soon; he will see that smirk again and hear his voice not solely in his memory but in reality. That thought is like a beacon guiding him, urging him home.

In a colorless world devoid of hope, I ran from monsters. I led them as far away as I could from Dean. Hiding from him became a painful duty, a self-imposed exile to ensure his safety. I heard Dean’s prayers, his earnest desperate calls for help filled with concern and fears for my safety. Each word calling to me through the chaos was a torment unlike anything I had previously endured.

My sense of isolation was profound, magnified by the knowledge that Dean was so close yet unreachable by my choice. The sounds of Purgatory and its inhabitants’ howls and whispers seemed to mock my solitude. Yet, it was Dean’s voice, his prayers whispered into the void, that rose above all else, both a balm and a blade to my weary soul.

Each day, I battled my longing to reveal myself to Dean, to fight by his side. The knowledge that my presence could bring him harm and that my sacrifice was a shield against the creatures that stalked me was little more than a bitter comfort against the ache of separation.

It was a test of my will, of my love for him, manifesting in the quiet, relentless determination to keep him safe, even if it meant enduring the agony of his unanswered calls.

Then, seeing Dean again after what seemed like a harrowing eternity was like witnessing the first dawn of creation. The instant my eyes found him, the world seemed to realign. The surge of emotion was overwhelming. Relief washed over me at the sight of him, unharmed and driven. His joy and relief at finding me alive filled me with awe... but little comfort.

Embracing Dean washed away all my loneliness. The moment our arms wrapped around each other, I felt a peace in the solidity of his presence that erased all the fears and uncertainty of the previous year. Feeling his strength, the contours of his back under my hands, however, tested my silent resolve to stay behind in Purgatory.

Yet, as I stood at the precipice of escape, my reason to stay became profoundly clear. I needed to atone for my mistakes and betrayals. It was my penance, a way to make amends for the suffering I had caused. In so doing, I could perform one last guardian act to ensure Dean’s safe passage back to the world–a world that needed him far more than it needed an angel lost in his quest for redemption.

A familiar whoosh of air and the faint scent of ozone drags Castiel from his recollection. Panic grips him, and he begins to thrash and moan, rallying more strength than he has in days. A hand comes to rest on his chest, a hand meant to soothe, not heal.

“Easy there, Brother. I wouldn’t dream of keeping you away from your plaid-clad Adonis any longer than necessary. I’ve merely come to say goodbye. You know I don’t get home much.”

Castiel stills at Balthazar’s assurance. He manages to find and squeeze the Angel’s hand in thanks.

“He knows you’re coming, Cassie. Gabriel tells me he is rattling the pearly gates in anticipation, metaphorically speaking, of course.”

A single tear falls from Castiel’s eye, dampening the pillow. Balthazar wipes it away with his thumb and, with a kiss on the forehead, is gone.

It was as though I was watching myself from a distance, trapped inside my own body, a prisoner of actions I was powerless to resist. Naomi’s grip on me was a violation of my very being, stripping away my autonomy. My love for Dean, my compass and reason for defying my kind, now felt like a weapon turned against me. The agony of this was unbearable. My heart ached with the knowledge of what I was doing, yet I found myself unable to stop. It’s a peculiar kind of Hell—to know right from wrong, to deeply love, and yet to be compelled to act against that love.

As I wrestled with Naomi’s control, it became increasingly clear that the bond I shared with Dean was not just a source of torment but also my salvation. It was my love for Dean, profound and unshakeable that unlocked the chains of manipulation. My love for him so deep and integral to my being became the tether that guided me out. It was as if every command from Naomi, every action I was compelled to take against Dean, only strengthened my resolve and fortified the connection that tied my essence to his.

My love for him did more than just offer resistance; it shattered the very foundation of Naomi’s hold over me. Each attempt to bend my will against him only highlighted my commitment to him. And in the end, it was this love that broke the control Naomi had forged. It was as if my heart refused to comply, to be complicit in an act that would harm the one person who had come to mean more to me than my own existence. This love allowed me to reclaim my will, stand against Naomi, and protect Dean at all costs. My love for Dean was my salvation, my path to redemption, and the force that ultimately freed me from Naomi’s grasp.

The sweet smell of wildflowers wafting in through the half-open window from their garden, fills Castiel’s nose. The scent is so delicate it brings him a sense of peace, reminding him of the beauty of creation. The fragrance becomes a balm for his soul, a reminder of the many hours spent in the garden with Dean. Each note within the scent–the freshness of the green, the subtle sweetness, and the underlying earthiness, evokes spring and new beginnings, a new beginning Castiel patiently awaits. Like Castiel’s and Dean’s love, the wildflowers tell a story of fortitude, of beauty that persists in adversity and blooms in the most unexpected places.

‿︵‿︵‿︵‿

Standing alone once again in this colorless world, I heard something unexpected, something that pierced the perpetual twilight of Purgatory like a ray of light—Dean’s prayer—a sincere declaration of need... of love reached out to me across the vast and unforgiving expanse acting as both apology and confession. Nothing mattered or existed at that moment but the earnestness of Dean’s words.

Feeling Dean’s love in his prayer engulfed me in a wave of emotions so intense it threatened to consume me. I felt an ache in my chest, a yearning to respond, to bridge the gap between us with words of my own, to tell Dean that his love is mirrored, magnified, and returned with every fiber of my being. I longed to confess to him that he is both my anchor and my compass in the tumultuous sea of my existence, the one who gives my centuries-long life meaning and purpose.

However, the shadow of a cosmic bargain loomed over me—my bargain with the Empty, a cruel one that bound my tongue and caged my heart. The joy that would come with declaring my love for Dean, with embracing the full measure of our love, was the very thing that would precipitate my end by summoning the Empty to claim me. It was a crucible that encapsulated the eternal conflict between my desire and duty. My love for Dean, so vast and uncontainable, forced me into silence, binding my heart in chains, forever poised on the precipice of utterance and silence.

Castiel can hear snippets of a quiet conversation beyond the closed bedroom door. Two voices- his and Dean’s son, Bobby, and that of his wife. Bobby’s voice catches as he tries not to cry. He can envision the scene just beyond the door–a wife gathering her husband in a comforting embrace. Castiel can hear the exchange of precious words– “I love you” and the reply, “I love you, too.”

He recalls the commitment he and Dean made to raise their family in the safe embrace of a loving home, how they assured and reassured their kids and grandkids by saying those words to each other and to them, “I love you,” countless times until it became the most ordinary and natural way to end a phone call, a text, or a visit.

But it wasn’t always easy to say those words. There was a time in Castiel’s life when he kept those words to himself, afraid to utter them into the universe for so many reasons–

In the shadowed confines of the dungeon, as Death’s relentless pounding echoed ominously around us, I faced Dean, my heart heavy yet clear, urging me toward revelation. My deep and unwavering feelings for him demanded a voice.

As I prepared to confess, to use my declaration as both an avowal of my love and an invitation to summon the Empty in a desperate bid to save Dean, I saw it; I saw what I had dared not hope to dream– a reflection of my own heart. In his tear-filled gaze, a mirror to the love I was about to declare. This recognition, this silent acknowledgment from Dean, filled me with a sense of peace and purpose amidst my calculated risk and transformed my confession into something sacred and became a moment of vulnerability and truth for us both.

Despite its danger and the looming shadow of death, I realized that this moment was the happiest I had ever been. In Dean’s eyes, I saw not just the reflection of my own love but the acceptance and reciprocation of it. This realization, coupled with the gravity of my actions, imbued my confession with a power beyond words. It was a declaration made in the face of oblivion, a moment in which our love would transcend the boundaries of our existence and become a force capable of altering our destinies. Knowing that Dean loved me in return, seeing the depth of his feelings allowed me to embrace my fate with a heart overflowing with joy. This confession, this moment of utter honesty and vulnerability, was not just presumably my last stand, but was the culmination of a journey that taught me love’s true meaning.

As his eyes flutter open, Castiel feels he is floating in a vast, fog-shrouded sea. The world seems to oscillate, vibrating gently between dream and what truly is. Everything has a soft, disorienting fuzziness, as if this familiar and loved bedroom is cast in a dream-like glow. The textures of the bedding, the moonlight filtering through the billowing curtains, and the distant sounds of the world outside all feel intensely real and oddly fabricated. In Castiel’s state, his senses are unreliable narrators...

‿︵‿︵‿︵‿

In the formless, infinite black of the Empty, where existence is meant to be a dreamless slumber, I floated awake and adrift, painfully aware and alert, not granted the peace of sleep. This realm, a void untouched by light or life, offered me no solace, only an eternal, unyielding silence. Here, I was isolated from the human world, from the warmth of connection, and most painfully, from Dean—

And then Dean’s call pierced through the oppressive silence. It was like a single beam of light slicing through an endless night. At first, I believed it to be nothing more than a trick—a cruel mimicry woven from either my deepest desires and regrets or a cruel punishment designed by the Empty to torment me. However, the voice unmistakably Dean’s, and rife with urgency and a raw, unguarded emotion, seemed achingly real.

“Cas, I need you. Please, I’m begging you. Don’t give up. We’re not done trying yet,” Dean’s voice echoed like a tangible thread of hope in the impenetrable gloom.

My heart thrashed against my chest, torn between hope and despair. Dean’s words, laden with unabashed love and anguish, made me question everything.

“I can’t do this without you,” Dean continued, a vulnerability in his voice. “You’re my family, Cas... I love you. I love you, too.”

His words were a light in the darkness. Was it truly Dean, reaching across realms out of love and desperation, or merely a figment, a dream woven from my own longing? The notion of escape, of returning to Dean’s side, to fight, to exist, became a battle cry within me.

And then I heard Dean’s plan for my rescue, spoken with a determination and cleverness that I had come to know and admire so well. It seemed almost too tangible to dismiss.

“We are doing this. I found a way, Cas. I promise. Just hang on. We are going to be together soon, Sunshine.”

Central to Dean’s plan was our unique bond, marked physically by the handprint I left on Dean’s shoulder when I first pulled him from Hell. This handprint was never just a scar, but a reservoir of my Grace. It was a lingering trace of my celestial essence intertwined with Dean’s soul.

Dean had learned that my Grace, mingled with his soul, might act as a signal, a way to reach me. All that was required was amplifying the residual Grace within Dean and using it as a guide to locate and retrieve me.

The ritual, detailed in a forgotten chapter of the Book of the Damned, called for a circle to be drawn with sigils representing the realms of Heaven, Hell, Earth, and the Empty. Within this circle, Dean stood as the focal point, his soul acting as the anchor to the mortal world and his bond with me serving as a guiding light across the realms.

Rowena was tasked with preparing and purifying Dean’s soul to enhance its luminosity. This involved a potion distilled from the tears of a phoenix, signifying rebirth and the heart of a lion, symbolizing courage and love. This preparation ensured that Dean’s soul shone with the purity of his love, making it strong enough to penetrate the darkness.

Jack’s contribution was to channel a controlled burst of his Nephilim power, acting as the catalyst that ignited the mingled Grace and soul energy within Dean, creating a spiritual tether that stretched from Earth to the Empty.

Once the ritual was finally initiated, Dean called out to me, not with his voice but with his soul, projecting his love, his need, and his unwavering belief. “You’re coming home, Sweetheart.” It was a gamble, relying on the power of emotion and celestial Grace, but Dean’s refusal to accept the impossible made certain they would try.

As Dean would recount many times over the years, the spell unfolded under the cloak of night. Outside the bunker, Dean stood at the center of the intricately drawn sigils, knowing it could be his only chance to bring me home. Around him, the air thrummed with power as Rowena chanted in an ancient tongue. Her voice rose and fell with the cadence of the spell. Jack extended his hands toward Dean, focusing his Nephilim power while his eyes glowed softly in the dark.

The Grace within Dean, amplified by the purity of his love and the strength of his soul, responded. It was like a heartbeat, a pulse of light that began within him and stretched outwards. The symbols on the ground lit up, and the boundary between the worlds blurred.

In the Empty, I felt the presence of something familiar, something warm and utterly enveloping. Dean’s love reached out to me, a call so honest and compelling that it stirred me from the depths of my despair. My Grace, now mingled with Dean’s soul, acted as a homing signal, guiding me through the darkness towards the light.

Back on Earth, the air crackled with energy, and the ground vibrated. Then, in a flash of blinding light, The Empty was breached... and it released me. I emerged, staggering into the circle and into Dean’s waiting arms.

Castiel understands his time is drawing near as he senses the gathering of his loved ones at his bedside; he hears the soft crying sounds and soothing whispers and feels the warmth of loving hands squeezing his own and caressing his cheek. He musters some of his remaining strength to open his eyes, to take in the faces of those he spent his life loving and caring for, the faces of the children he and Dean raised.

He gazes through clouded eyes at the faces of his grandchildren. He feels a twinge of regret that he won’t be here to see them grow into the strong, capable people he knows they’ll be, but he draws comfort from the knowledge that the work he and Dean did, with the help of so many others, secured a future that was safe and mostly free of peril.

Castiel’s eyes come to land on Sam. His eyes are red-rimmed and tired. “Hey Cas, take this,” he says as he presses Castiel’s wedding ring into his palm and closes his hand around it. “You’re gonna need it. He’ll be pissed as Hell if you show up without it.”

‿︵‿︵‿︵‿

I have witnessed the breadth of human history, the rise and fall of empires, the fleetingness of life, and yet, standing there, preparing to vow my eternity to Dean, I felt a grounding force I had never experienced before.

The morning of our wedding was quieter than I anticipated. There was a calmness, a serenity that belied the chaos that had been our lives up to that point. As I stood waiting for Dean, surrounded by nature, family, and friends, I was struck with the absolute rightness of what we were embarking upon.

Seeing Dean approach, I wept. Here was a man who had taught an angel what it meant to be human, to feel deeply, to fight not just for survival but for the right to love and be loved. Dean, the embodiment of integrity and the beauty of humanity, whose strength, vulnerability, and capacity for love reshaped my understanding of existence.

When it came time to exchange vows, I articulated truths I’d only come to understand because of Dean. I spoke of choice—the sacred act of choosing one another time and time again, the choice to love fiercely and without reservation. I acknowledged the darkness we had both been mired in and the light we had become for each other. My vows were a promise of constancy, a declaration that my love for him would remain unwavering no matter what followed.

The intensity of emotion in that moment was unlike anything I had ever known. It was a convergence of every sorrow endured, and every joy celebrated. To stand before Dean and see the absolute love in his eyes was to understand the true nature of belonging. I had been an angel, a warrior, and a protector, but in becoming Dean’s husband, I embraced a new purpose, one defined by love and shared humanity.

Our wedding was not just a ceremony; it was about forging a future where our love would be a guiding light, a symbol, not just for us, but for all who have journeyed with us. In marrying Dean, I chose not just a partner, but a path—a path toward hope, healing, and my unwavering belief in him.

As we stepped into our new life together amidst the cheers of our friends and family, I felt a sense of completeness, a wholeness that had eluded me for centuries. This, I realized, was what it meant to be truly alive—to love, to commit, to build a life not in the shadows of apocalyptic battles, but in the light of day and side by side.

‿︵‿︵‿︵‿

Castiel’s breath hitches. He isn’t sure if it’s the memory or his swift stride toward death, but as he fights for every labored breath, the reason is inconsequential...

‿︵‿︵‿︵‿

I could not breathe the first time Dean gave himself to me. It was as though I was at the center of the birth of a new star in the vastness of the universe. The initial brush of our bodies was a tempest, wild and unrestrained. It was more than flesh on flesh. It was the symphony of the universe mirrored in the movement of our bodies as we became one. I was shaken by the sheer awe of Dean’s beauty and his willingness to both receive my love and return it with equal passion. I felt what I could easily mistake for the surging of my Grace, but in its absence, Dean’s ardent ministrations took its place.

But our wedding night... that was the gentle pull of gravity, the kind that binds stars into constellations. Where once there were electric sparks of new discovery, desperate and urgent, now simmering within our bodies was the warm glow of eternal flames that promised–with each tender touch– to burn for a lifetime. Each kiss was an oath that spoke of a deep and abiding togetherness. Yes, our first time was the crashing of waves on the shore, powerful and raw. Our wedding night, however, was the serene ebb and flow of the tide, a deep and everlasting current.

On this night, every moment was a reflection. In Dean’s eyes, I saw both the man I loved and the man I now aspired to be. With the tenderness of his every touch, his love became etched upon my skin, and my devotion written upon his soul. In our passion for each other, we discovered uncharted depths of our humanity, embarking on a serene passage from the wild and chaotic to the tranquil but no less ardent depths of a bond ordained by the very fabric of existence.

‿︵‿︵‿︵‿

Castiel’s memories come fast and furiously now. It’s as though his mind is subconsciously aware that he is running out of time—out of time to remember every precious and pivotal moment of his life with Dean before he sees him again.

‿︵‿︵‿︵‿

“No, Cas. Just no.”

“But Dean, just tell me why.”

“I’m not... I can’t... what if...”

In that moment, I saw Dean’s struggle to find the words when the only one that mattered was fear. His self-doubt was tangible, and I couldn’t bear it. Moving closer, I gently took both his hands in mine, willing him to see himself through my eyes.

“Dean, you are not John Winchester. But you are the man you have become, in part, because of him. You are kind and sensitive. Your capacity for love is boundless. You are attuned to the thoughts and feelings of others. You are more capable of empathy than anyone I have ever known. What could more define a father than these qualities?”

Dean’s gaze met mine, a storm of emotions brewing in his eyes, tears threatening to spill. Even after three years of marriage, my open adoration still rendered him speechless. Yet, his fear, masquerading as stubborn resolve, won the moment.

“Yeah, Cas, and what about Jack? I really did a bang-up job there, didn’t I?”

“Can it really be that you don’t see how much you’ve changed? You were who you were and did what you did with the tools you had at the time, not to mention the circumstances we were living through. It’s all you could have done; all anyone could have done.”

My words seemed to bring him a semblance of peace, and I drew closer, showering his face with light kisses. “Anyway, I know better than anyone what an absolute mush you are.”

****

Every tick of the clock was a reminder of the fast-approaching moment that would undoubtedly alter the course of our existence. My hands, usually steady and certain in the face of turmoil, now found an unfamiliar tremor as they clasped together, a silent prayer whispered between them.

And then, the moment arrived. The nurse’s approach was heralded not by the sound of her footsteps but by Dean’s choked sob.

As she placed our child into my arms for the first time, a tidal wave of emotion broke over me. Love, in its most raw and fierce form, flooded every fiber of my being. In the eyes of our newborn, I saw infinity—a soul that was both entirely new and as ancient as the cosmos.

In that moment, I was reborn. The man who had sat in that waiting room, consumed by fear and anticipation, was no more. In his place was a father bound irrevocably to this tiny, perfect being cradled in my arms.

Dean, with a softness in his eyes that only I have ever truly seen, knelt at our feet, gazing up at us with a mixture of awe and incredulity. “Cas, I... Man, I never thought—”

He paused, struggling for words, not because they weren’t there but because the depth of what he felt seemed too vast for language.

“You’ve given me a lot of firsts, Cas. Fights I never thought I’d win, monsters I never thought we’d beat. A love for the Goddamned ages...But this?”

Dean’s thumb gently caressed my hand as he continued, “I spent so much of my life thinking I didn’t deserve happiness or even a future. But here we are, with this tiny, perfect person who’s part you. I’ve never been more certain of anything in my life—I want this, all of this, with you.”

Dean turned his eyes to our baby girl. “I know we said we would name her Mary, but Cas, looking at her now with that shock of messy black hair and those incredible blue eyes just like yours... I don’t think that’s her name. This is Grace, Grace Winchester...”

As I sat on the park bench, a silent observer of the spectacle of sheer joy, it became, for me, a vibrant echo of a distant yet unforgettable moment. However, I was no longer an angel fraught with doubt and turmoil; I no longer grappled with celestial orders and my own burgeoning free will. Instead, I was a husband and a father watching Dean play ball with our son, Bobby, and I was filled with an unadulterated bliss.

Dean, in his effortless embodiment of fatherhood, displayed a tenderness and patience that filled me with immense pride and an even greater love, if such a thing were possible.

Like the constellations I discovered dappled across Dean’s body, the sprinkle of freckles across Bobby’s nose was a mark of distinction on this unique soul blossoming under his parents’ unrelenting love. Watching him, with legs bowed just like his father, run, stumble, and then get up again with an undeterred spirit, I saw so much of Dean in him.

I was struck by a profound sense of gratitude for this life, for Dean, and for our son, who embodied the best of us both. For all my angelic bearing and lofty celestial origins, I was profoundly human in this love. It was my anchor, my joy, and the very essence of my being.

Bobby, with his light brown hair catching the sun’s rays, moved with a carefree delight that was bought and paid for by Dean and me, as well as every hunter who came before us. His peals of laughter proved to me that it was worth everything we had endured; every drop of our blood spilled.

Watching my husband and son, the simple act of throwing and catching a ball was transformed into a symbol of the legacy we created, not solely through blood but through our deeds and the love we shared. This seemingly mundane moment illustrated for me the essence of what it meant to be a family. It was a moment I yearned to capture and hold close, a memory to cherish in the quiet of eternity.

Dean leaned against Baby’s hood, arms crossed, a mischievous grin playing on his lips. I was not smiling; however, I was apprehensive yet curious.

“C’mon, Cas. It’s about friggin’ time you drove her.”

“Dean, I am well aware of your ‘affection’ for this car. I will not be the one to cause harm to it.”

“Hell, Baby’s seen worse than whatever you could do to her, and anyway, I’ll be right next to you if something goes wrong.”

“But Dean, it really isn’t necessary. I have my truck. I fear my abilities do not necessarily translate to operating machinery, especially one as cherished as the Impala.”

“Cas, I’ve seen you smite demons, angel-dive out of Heaven, and resurrect the dead. I think you can handle a little Detroit steel. And hey, if you can’t trust yourself, trust me. I wouldn’t ask you if I didn’t believe you could do it.”

“Your confidence is… reassuring. However, the potential for accidents—”

“Accidents happen, man. Hell, you should’ve seen the look on my dad’s face the first time I nicked Baby. Thought the world was gonna end. But here she is, still kicking ass.”

“Very well, Dean. I will do this… But only because you ask it of me. I shall endeavor not to disappoint you.”

“You won’t, Cas. You won’t.”

With a deep breath, I approached the driver’s side of the Impala, a sense of determination in my step. Dean clapped me on the back with a proud smile as he opened the door for me with a big sweeping motion. The afternoon sun dipped low on the horizon, casting long shadows as we ‘hit the road,’ as Dean called it. Of all the small gestures of Dean’s love for me throughout the years, on this day, as I watched the wind blow his hair as he sat in the passenger seat with a petrified but joyful look on his face, I felt his love in its truest and most complete form.

“Castiel Winchester, this house is falling apart. It will take years to get it to where we want it to be. I can’t believe you talked me into buying it. The kids will be grown by the time I get to put down my tools.”

“You know, Dean. It’s quite comforting to know that you envision us in this home for the next few decades.”

“Of course I do, Sunshine. It’s our first and our last home. You know I just have to fucking bitch because I am Dean Winchester, and that’s what I do.”

“Oh, yes. I am well aware. How about we set up an incentive program? For every room you complete, I can reward you with some form of depraved debauchery... a christening, if you will.”

“Fuck, Cas, what are we standing around for? Get me my tools from the shed.”

****

“Dean, I don’t believe planting a garden involves so much touching.”

“What, you’re hot in those overalls... my cute little angelic farmer.”

“There is nothing ‘little’ about me, husband.”

“Yeah, no shit, come over here.”

****

“Dean, I don’t need a doctor.”

“Oh yes, you do, Cas. Your headaches aren’t normal. People don’t just start getting headaches.”

“I am fine, Beloved. I’m sure it’s nothing.”

“Nothing, Cas? What the fuck are you talking about? Something might be really wrong. I can’t... Cas, I can’t...”

“Dean, what?”

“Cas, I can’t lose you. Please, Cas, please, let’s get you to a doctor.”

“Yes, of course. I’ll make an appointment right away.”

I had been insensitive. Although Dean had grown and changed so much over the years, the one thing he absolutely could not do was shake the fear of losing me. For all the pain and suffering I endured being trapped by the Empty, in many ways, it pales in comparison to the forever raw and bleeding wound my absence left on Dean.

****

“Dean, they suit you. They really do.”

“Yeah, well, whose big idea was it to get our eyes checked?”

“I believe yours, in order to determine the cause of my headaches once the doctor gave me a clean bill of health.”

“That explains your hot as Hell fucking glasses. Why did you make me get checked too?”

“I believe it was because your arms could no longer stretch far enough away for you to see.”

“Very funny, Cas. Shit, I look like an old man.”

“Dean... You’re an old man. How beautiful does that sound? We made it to old, my Beloved.”

“Dad, it’s Grace. It won’t be long now until you’re with Pop again. I need to tell you, one last time, how much I love you. You’ve been the most incredible father a girl could ever wish for. You have loved me so fiercely and so completely. Thank you, Dad, for everything—the support, the wisdom, your unending patience and understanding, especially during my rebellious teenage years. I am who I am today because of you and Pop. Bobby’s here, too. I hope you can hear us.”

Every ounce of Castiel’s being yearns to respond, to assure her that everything is ok, that he is ready to go, but his strength has dwindled to nothing.

Then, a voice breaks through, startlingly so reminiscent of Dean’s, causing a moment of confusion. “Dean?” he rasps in a barely-there whisper.

“It’s Bobby, Dad. I love you. Rest now; Pop is waiting for you. If I’m sure of anything. I’m sure of that.”

Time blurs, immeasurably, but eventually, the gentle sound of Sam weeping by Castiel’s bedside brings him back to awareness. Sam’s grip is tight on his hand, and words break through in fragments. “Your coming into our lives.... changed everything, Cas. Not just.... defeating Chuck, but... Cas, you saved Dean. I can’t thank you enough for that. Tell him... tell him I said, ‘I’ll see him soon enough.’”

As Castiel once more slips beneath the tide of consciousness, memories flood in, vivid and relentless— a kaleidoscope of Polaroids scattered across a table. Grace’s first date, with Dean anxiously waiting up; her first heartbreak and the image of Dean and Grace huddled under blankets, crying into their ice cream while “Love Actually” played on the laptop balanced on their knees.

Bobby’s schoolyard fight stirred a storm in Dean. “Cas, what the Hell? I don’t want him to end up like me.”

“Dean, calm down and tell me what happened?”

“He was defending a girl from a bully...”

“Well then, Dean, he’s exactly like you. He’s a hero,” Castiel calmly interjected.

Hand in hand, Dean and I watched as the “Winchester Automotive: Classic Car Restoration” sign was hoisted into place.

Bobby’s heroic act as a firefighter, saving a mother from a burning house, made the papers. The pride on Dean’s face was a poignant full-circle moment that moved us to tears.

Then, there were the long nights pacing the hospital corridors, waiting for the arrival of the first of five grandchildren.

Dean’s insistence on hand carving the name plate that Grace would display proudly on her desk for the next twenty years: Dr Grace Winchester, MD – Neurosurgeon.

The sun breaks through the sheer curtains of the bedroom with a burst of light, heralding a new day. Castiel has survived yet another night. He feels an unexpected strength and clarity, a vividness to his senses that had eluded him for days. There’s a notion that suggests in the moments before death, one is blessed with a surge of renewed vitality and well-being—a final, gracious boon allowing for heartfelt farewells perhaps. Whether this is a divine mercy bestowed by God or a mysterious capability of the human body remains a mystery, but Castiel doesn’t question it. He is as certain as he has ever been about anything that this is his last day on Earth, his last day with he and Dean’s children, their grandchildren, and all their extended family. But his heart races, knowing that it also means it is his last day without Dean.

As I stepped through the threshold of our home, the sight that greeted me was one of sheer terror. Dean lay motionless on the floor, his face a ghostly pale. Panic surged through me like an electric current, igniting every cell with dread. This was a vulnerability I had never considered; despite the countless dangers we had faced together, the possibility of losing him to something as human as a heart attack had never crossed my mind.

As I knelt beside him, my hands trembling yet determined, I began compressions. Stupidly, foolishly, helplessly, I prayed with each push, not for Jack to spare him; I knew he would not, but instead, I prayed for the chance to say goodbye if this was to be his end.

“Dean, you must fight. You have battled monsters, demons, and even death itself. This cannot be how your story ends,” I whispered between compressions, my voice steady but my heart shattering.

The rhythm of CPR became a metronome to my frantic thoughts. Memories of our life together flashed before me—every smile, every argument, every moment of quiet contentment. These memories became fuel, driving my hands to keep moving and my spirit to not give up hope.

I found myself bargaining with the universe. Once, it was Dean who moved Heaven and Earth to save me; now, I was ready to tear apart the very fabric of reality to keep his heart beating.

“Please, don’t take him from me. I cannot navigate this world without him,” I yelled out into the deafening silence of our home.

As the sirens grew louder, signaling the approach of the ambulance I somehow must have called, I cursed my lack of healing Grace. I was reduced to the same hopes and fears that afflict every human being faced with the potential loss of their beloved. “Dean Winchester, you have to fight through this. I need you. Our children need you. Stay with me, Dean. Our story isn’t over yet.”

The memories of that time are drenched in my tears. They were relentless and unyielding. I sobbed through the ambulance ride and the endless hours and days in the ICU. I wept even as Dean sat beside me on our sofa at home five days after I nearly lost him.

Dean’s prognosis was not good.

The doctors told us that the damage to his heart was severe and that he would likely not survive another heart attack.

“Sweetheart, I’m ok. I made it. I’m here with you. I’m home at last. It’s ok to stop crying now.”

Yet, the doctor’s words echoed in my mind, fueling my fear. “But Dean, they said... If it happens again, you might not... And I can’t—twenty years with you won’t be enough.”

With a conviction that steadied me, he promised, “Then it won’t happen again. We have two more decades together, at least. That’s a promise.”

Dean changed his lifestyle that very day. He abstained from red meat, never touched another alcoholic beverage, embraced evening walks, and even indulged my efforts to teach him meditation. All these changes he made for us—for a future where I wouldn’t face the world alone.

True to his word, Dean granted me twenty additional years by his side. After four decades of marriage, he passed away at the age of 83.

Dean Winchester’s departure from this world wasn’t marked by the violent end often met by hunters; instead, he left as a husband, father, grandfather, prosperous business owner, and a cherished figure in our community. Most importantly, he passed while in my arms. Dean’s final moments came on a serene Thursday at dawn, under the cheerful serenade of morning birdsong, and the fragrant allure of flowers wafting through our open bedroom window. As we lay together, his head rested upon my chest, and I gently ran my fingers through his hair.

Dean, feeling the weight of his years but the peace of a life well and fully lived, turned his face up to me with a faint smile.

“Hey, Cas... You know, I always thought I’d go out at the edge of a blade or the barrel of a gun. But this... this is nice, isn’t it?”

I gently squeezed Dean’s hand. “It’s perfect, Dean. You’ve fought enough battles. Now, it’s time for rest, my love. You’ve earned it.”

Dean’s gaze drifted to the window, where the sunlight danced through the leaves. “We built a beautiful life, didn’t we? The kids, the business... And you... you stuck around with this old man.”

I looked deeply into his eyes and replied with unwavering certainty. “As though there was anywhere I would rather have been. It is where I belong. Your battles are my battles; your peace is my peace.”

Dean nodded, his eyes glistening with a mixture of love and impending farewell. “Promise me something, Cas. Keep an eye on them for me, will you? The kids, the grandkids... Watch over our family, and make sure they know our story—the real one, how much we fought, how much we loved.”

“I promise, Dean. They’ll know everything. They’ll know how deeply you loved them and the legacy of love you leave behind.”

Dean’s grip tightened for a moment, a final surge of strength as he faced the end with me by his side. “I’m not scared, Cas. I’m ready because you’re here with me. Thank you for being my husband and my best friend.”

With a soft smile and a nod, I leaned in closer, my voice a soft caress, and spoke my final vow.

“And thank you, Dean, for being my heart. I love you, now and forever. Rest now, my love. We’ll find each other again.”

As Dean closed his eyes, comforted and content, I felt his soul leave his body, and for the first time in forty years, I felt unmoored, adrift.

The absence of Dean’s essence consumed the air and the space around me as I sat, my hand still enveloped by the lingering warmth of Dean’s, now fading. The pain carved into me with each passing moment.

I was anchored in this moment of loss, the finality of it. Grief washed over me in waves, a deluge that promised to never fully recede. In the stillness Dean’s absence became a resounding echo, a silence that was deafening.

As I rose from the bed, I turned to take one last look at the man who had been my world, only to see...

myself.

Before Castiel can fully comprehend what has happened, he hears it. “Hey, Sunshine, ya miss me?”

Spinning around, Castiel finds himself facing Dean, leaning casually against the bedroom door frame, one ankle over the other, with an almost shy smile on his face. Dean’s presence is an echo of the past. He is not the weary soul who had aged and become frail in the last few months of his life, but the robust, unyielding hunter Castiel had pledged his life to more than 40 years before.

Castiel, struck by awe and disbelief, sinks to his knees. Dean’s smile vanishes, and concern takes its place as he rushes over to kneel before his angel. He cradles Castiel’s face with a tenderness that has always been their secret language. Mirroring the gesture, Castiel cups Dean’s cheek, allowing tears to stream down his face.

“Dean...Dean, you’re here... you’re young again.” He brings his hands up to touch his own face, and then his eyes drop to his hands. Castiel turns them over in wonder, realizing that he, too, is young again.

“That’s right, my Angel– still beautiful, still Dean Winchester.”

At the sound of Dean being so incredibly Dean, Castiel snaps out of his stupor, jumps to his feet and wraps his arms around Dean’s neck, and covers his face in kisses. “Dean, I missed you so much. It’s been ten years. I thought this day would never come. I’m so happy to see you,” Castiel rambles endlessly between kisses.

Dean’s assurance is soft but resolute: “I’m here, Sweetheart, and I’m never leaving you again. I’ve been busy since I’ve been gone. I’ve reconstructed our house, this house, to the exact detail. You have your garden and your bees. These past ten years were just a blip in the eternity we will have together, Cas. C’mon, I’ll walk you home.”

As Castiel’s face lights with a smile that he has not worn in a decade, he presents Dean with the wedding ring that has been clutched in his hand for the last few days. Dean, with reverence, kneels and slides the ring back onto Castiel’s finger, a perfect fit.

A final glance behind them at the bed that holds Castiel’s earthly form, now surrounded by their mourning family, pulls a solemn nod from Dean.

He takes a moment to gaze at their children and grandchildren.

“You did good, Cas. Real good. Come on, Angel, let’s go home.”

“Yes, Dean... home.”
