Chapter Text

[ ... ]

Time was always moving on the surface after the war. Whether it was picking up the pieces of fighting between species long since finished or the endless amounts of graves that were found scattering the country side or maybe it was the random objects found almost like grave sites with a grayish substance on top of them.

People remembered the sounds of horses dying as they made their last sound before magic or weapon cut them down. People longed to forget their loved ones cries who seemed to call them from their endless slumber.

But still. They remembered.

Humans picked up the pieces of their broken life's both in guilt and in hope that one day futures of futures would be better. That one day they would wake up not to the smell of metal and iron or the sound of flesh against flesh. But the sound of humans laughing and flowers blooming.

The scars of the war kept still. It's shadow looming over the continent. Both human and monster destruction scattered.

One human stood waiting for the monsters return.

Her name was Maine.

...

...

10 years later (AFTER THE WAR)

"Maine~ super cube where are you no-" a small girl calls out her smirk wavering as she walks to the entrance of the barn as Maine sits in the hay her eyes blurred and shallow.

The girl fakes a chuckle to lighten the mood as she skips inside. "Come onnn Maineee~!" The girl says as she pokes Maine her fingers proding Maine's shoulder lightly.

"I'm not going out today Tari" Maine said weakly.

"just... Leave me here for a while... Please?" Maine looked tired as she said straining herself with a smile.

"Ok... But you better come out! The festival is happening, it's been 10 years since the war, Maine you can't mope forever!" Tari said her cheeks puffed up as she positioned her hands on her hips and pointed at Maine.

"Promise you'll go!" She shouted.

"... I promise" Maine whispered as Tari walked out.

Maine let out a sigh, 'it has been 10 years but I...' She ruffled her dark brown hair it tossled between her hands. It was short almost like a boy but... Tari always said it was the boys who copied her. Maine muffled her laugh before her face fell and her arm hung loosely by her side.

"Today's the day... Huh?" Maine smiled softly as she frowned.

"Sorry I can't keep my promise Tari."

Maine grabbed a small satchel laying burried under the hay it's leather strap was put over her shoulder like a trained movement as she checked through it's contents.

A bag of money, a journal filled with paper, a piece of coal that was rapped in leather and a small blanket.

Maine trudged slowly out of the barn into the warm summer afternoon. The grass was blowing softly from the light breeze as Maine could hear the joy from the town. One villager waved to Maine as they got out from a single path that went past Maine's families home there was the barn and house on it.

Maine raised their hand to wave back in confusion before realizing her mistake. The villager had waved to another as they said something and ran down the road towards the main village.

Maine grumbled "dumbass why did you wave it wasn't for you anyways gods..."

She looked to the North where Mount Ebott stood. It's majestic appearance shows it proud beauty as it holds so many beneath. Maine frowned

She walked towards the mountain slowly making sure not to be seen by villagers. Tari can't know she won't come back. Maine had finally finished her home on the mountain a small hut with staring oak wood and a warm place to sleep. Somewhere she could live without the persistent screatch of racist assholes.

'Tari will understand when she's older.' Tari had been born before the war. She was some of the few who had never seen a monster and only believed the lies of the villagers.

'They're disgusting creatures who only kill, eat and fuck.'

'God does not want them child. Why didn't god help them if he wanted them?'

'Mongrels killed us that means they are the murderers!'

'Killer's

The lies of hate out of the villagers mouths had infected all the children who had never met monsters never heard their kindness. Or their gentle touch.

Poisoning their minds with lies of hate the children began making stories. Maine had enough. This was no longer her home of peace.

She did not fight in the war for this. She fought for her home not for this hateful mess.

So as she finally grew closer she finally followed a path of stone to a door of an old oak tree and opened it to her home. Maine's home.

It was rough but it was perfect. The windows had been patched of any holes and all spaces that let in cool air were blocked. It wouldn't be the best for summer but winter this hut would be perfect.

Maine had even built a beautiful bed with a giant pillow to support her weight.

It was perfect.

Now was the last thing on her list.

The entrance to the monsters home.
