They had been clashing like this for almost an hour now, exchanging blows and, on occasion, words.
Maki was beginning to grow frustrated, ‘ at this rate we’re going to be here for hours’ she thought, jumping back to dodge another blow from Hakari.
They stood at opposite ends, staring the other down through the dust and dirt that had been stirred up from their sparring.
“Why don’t you just give up already?” he smirked, the cocky bastard.
“Like hell I will, why don’t you come over and fight me like the man you are; or are you too tired? Does little Hakari need a nap?” Maki leaned forward with her hands on her hips, pitching her voice to be as condescending as possible.
Hakari’s brows crinkled- bullseye - but he cackled despite the anger simmering low in his gut, “ As if, I’m just getting started,” his stance changes, he stood straight now, staring her down, his chest pushed out.
What a cocky bastard.
Maki scoffed, it was so easy to rile him up- Anyone with an inflated ego was; such fragile fortitude.
They had been sparring, and Yuta had just left, said he was bored or something. Dealing with his jackpot was annoying, but she knew it would only last for so long- ‘probably another two minutes or so,’ she thought.
“Why don’t you just go run off to your sister and give up?
Oh, I forgot,
I guess you can’t, can you?” he flashed a lopsided smirk, angling his head more to look
down
at her.
She could’ve sworn she felt a blood vessel pop.
“ You wanna run that by me again? ” her fists clench at her sides and glares at the other through her lashes.
“ You heard me; I mean, I can’t even imagine being so useless as to die by your own failure of a father, ” he crossed his arms and leaned back, sporting a shit eating grin on his face.
She was going to kill him. How dare he.
“You’re dead. NO ONE talks about my sister that way.” She marched across the dirt and rubble, pure anger and murderous intent flowing out of her in waves, evident in the way she stepped.
“Woah, did I strike a nerve? It’s not that big, Maki, just words,” he had the gall to tease.
“ I don’t give a damn .” She sped up into a sprint, catching him off guard and clocking him right in the cheek, causing him to double over.
He groaned, “Calm the fuck down, woman!” He cradled his cheek, he knew it wouldn’t cause any physical damage, but it still stung.
“ You have a minute and a half. ” She kicked him while he was down, knocking the wind out of his lungs and sending him back.
“ Damn you, ” he stood up and spat on the ground, “ I’ll fuckin’ kill you, ” he squared up again, marching over to Maki and preparing to send a punch her way.
“ I’d like to see you try. ” She snarled, words dripping with venom all the while she tiptoed her way past each blow with the grace of a dancer.
Eventually, one hit. She flew back, crashing against a tree and slumping down.
She hacked and coughed, clearing her lungs. Maki staggered up, a wry smirk on her face, “ Only one minute left, ” she straightened, ignoring the sharp pain the other’s cursed energy left behind.
Hakari growled, “Fuck you,” he stomped forward yet again, “I can defeat you with or without my damned technique.”
“What was it you said earlier? ‘I’m just getting started’? Why don’t you show me what you’re made of ? Or are you afraid you can’t beat me? ”
“ You bitch . ” He moves to grab at her neck, lifting her up, “ you think you’re so tough , huh? ” Hakari tilts her head this way and that, leaning into her space, “ you ain’t shit. ” he almost spits in her face, but decides against it and throws her onto the ground.
“Pathetic.” he kicks her in the leg lightly, “Next time try picking a fight you can actually win,” he sneers, looking down at her as if she were some disgusting creature that dared to even have the balls to be near him.
“ You sure about that? ” She chuckles weakly, getting up again. “ Only thirty seconds left .” she grins at him, head hung low and knees buckling slightly.
If he were any dumber, he’d feel intimidated, “So? The hell are you gonna do the way you are? You couldn’t even catch a rat .”
He scoffed, turned on his heel, and began to walk away.
Maki laughed lowly, “27.. 26.. 25..” she begun counting down. Counting down the seconds until she could break the other in. Counting down until she could bash his head against the ground and watch him writhe.
Hakari turned around sharply, “ Quit that ” he spat, scowling.
“23.. 22.. 21..”
He marched over- a fatal mistake - and grabbed her by the collar, “ I said stop . ”
“19.. 18.. 16.. 15..”
“ CUT IT OUT!! ” He dropped her onto the floor like he did before, kicking her again.
She persisted until the countdown ended, “ Zero.. ” the glint in her eyes was cold. Cold enough to make even a wild beast freeze and cower in fear.
Maki gripped his hand and pried it off of her shirt, landing and standing on her feet- although wobbling slightly.
She looked him in the eyes, grinning ear to ear, “ Time’s up, Hakari. You should’ve left when you had the chance, ” she feigned sadness as she spoke, “ but it's too late for that now, isn’t it ?” She smiled almost sadly, but she felt nothing of the sort. The rush of adrenaline flooded her head,
I’ve always despised this asshat.
She could see the fear in his eyes, and it only drove her further. Without a second’s notice, the grip on his hand became crushing and she raised her fist to slam it directly into his face, relishing the sound of his nose breaking.
Hakari cries out, hand over the mangled flesh and cartilage that used to be his nose.
Blood splattered onto the ground, seeping into the dirt as the smell of iron slowly filled the air.
“ You thought, ” she stepped up to him, grabbing him by the hair and tilting his head to look at her, “ you could insult my sister, and get away with it ? ”
He let out a choked sound, attempting to grasp at her wrist and free himself. Maki shifted to grab the back of his head and promptly slammed it into the ground with a resounding crack .
“ My sister,”
Kick
“ Died valiantly ,”
Stomp
“ With honor, ”
She flipped him over
“ So I could grow , ”
She pressed against his cheek with her shoe
“ And survive . ”
Maki grabbed the collar of his shirt- bloodied and dusty - mimicking what he had done previously.
She raised her fist again, dealing blow after blow to his face.
By the time she’d finished Hakari was hardly recognizable, face caked in blood and bruised, swollen and mangled; jaw broken and jutting to the side unnaturally.
She dropped him to the floor, kicking him harshly once more before spitting on him; disgust painted on her face, “Pathetic,”
Hakari groaned weakly, wheezing with each breath.
As she went to leave she stomped on his chest, leaving him for the crows.
