Work Text:

Mitsuri and Obanai took the Christmas tree off their car’s roof. It was Mitsuri's favorite time of the year. Their family was getting together this weekend and she wanted to have the tree up before then.

They set the tree up in the living room across from the fireplace. Obanai took off the netting while she grabbed the ornaments from the closet. The fresh pine scent spread over the room. Obanai asked if she wanted to get a fake tree, but she wouldn’t hear of it. She looked at her husband as he rubbed his hands together.

“I’m going to change and make us some hot chocolate. How many marshmallows do you want?” He asked.

“Yes,” Mitsuri said and he narrowed his eyes.

“That’s not a number,” he said.

“Three quarters?” She laughed as his brow furrowed, frustrated by her answer. He stood in front of her now and tickled her side. Mitsuri squirmed as he pinched her sides and she fell down on the couch in a fit of giggles. She loved him more each day. This kind hearted man who would give her the world if she asked. Except she only had one want in the coming year. She wanted a baby.

They’d been married for over a year. They bought a house months ago. Obanai had mentioned the need for an extra bedroom for when they decided to have children. While they were dating he had been on the fence about children until he met her sister’s kids. He adored them and said he was open to kids if she wanted them. She was on the pill currently.

Obanai stopped tickling her before giving her a kiss. She ran her hands through his hair.

“It’s a good thing I love you,” Obanai whispered. She caressed his scarred face. When they first started dating he had been hesitant to show her his scars. Now he hardly wore a mask even in public.

“I love you more,” Mitsuri replied.

“That’s not possible,” he kissed her nose and sat up. “You get five,” he smiled at her and walked down the hallway, Mitsuri returned to placing the ornaments on the tree. She was going to ask if he was ready.

He grew up in a religious cult. They worshiped a snake goddess. He’d been the only male born to the ruling family in over 100 years. Plus his eyes were eccentric, one gold and the other teal. The cult sacrificed their male babies to the goddess except they kept Obanai alive. They were going to keep him alive until he turned 13 and then he would be given to the goddess. Instead they cut open his face and he escaped. His family was in jail now and there was no contact.

Mitsuri was humming to herself when he came in with the hot chocolate and five large marshmallows in her cup. She took the mug in her hand and sipped. Obanai was a perfectionist and made the hot cocoa from scratch with whole milk, sugar, cinnamon, and cocoa. She smiled behind the mug before setting it down.

“You made good progress,” he pointed at the tree. She nodded and then remembered the gift she had sitting in the entry closet.

“I got you something,” she walked away and came back with a small gift bag with a stupid amount of tissue paper. On the couch, Obanai tilted his head as she handed it to him. “Open it!” She said excitedly and sat down next to him.

Hesitantly, he plucked the paper out of the way to reveal a small box at the bottom. He took out box and set the bag on the ground. His nimble hands opened the plain brown box and Mitsuri smiled wider. Inside there was a white snake ornament wearing a pair of antlers. He held the gift up to his face before smirking.

“Kaburamaru is going to love it,” he said. “Thank you, sweetheart,” he leaned over to kiss her cheek.

She scooted closer and took his hand. He put the gift to the side.

“There’s something I wanted to bring up,” her heart pounded. “I’ve been thinking we’ve been married for a year now. I’m so happy with our life, but I think it could be better,” she could feel herself getting nervous.

“I was wondering if you were ready to have a baby,” she finally said the words she’d been dying to say for months. His eyes widened. “Or at least trying for a baby. I love you. I want to give you a family. A kid with your beautiful eyes and dark hair. You’d be an amazing father. When I see you with our nieces and nephews they pile on top of you and it fills my heart with joy. You know I always wanted kids, so if you’re ready I’d like to start trying. It can take months to get pregnant, so it’s not like-“

“I’m ready,” Obanai said and squeezed her hand. Mitsuri’s mouth dropped. She had expected she would have to start listing off the reasons she wanted them now and not later.

“Really?” She nearly squealed. He grinned at her.

“Yes, really,” he said and she tackled him. She laid her body over his and their lips met. “I was going to ask on Christmas that way you wouldn’t have to stress about it on top of the holiday,” he said as they parted.

“Can we start now?” Mitsuri asked and he nodded.

Their baby was born on Obanai’s birthday, September 15 at 2:23 A.M. Six pounds and eight ounces and 17 inches tall. The baby had one green eye and the other was teal and he was named Haru Iguro.
