He takes her hand, whispers in her ear, "Come, my darling, the world is ending and we mustn't tarry." She doesn't hesitate, not for one breath nor one moment, not for the span of a single heartbeat. Their fingers interlace: two perfect halves of a perfect whole. Two travelers, each the other's world in a vast universe. Wings spread, they fly—
The chasm is dark around her, the screams of dying churls ringing in her ears. "Nobody has the right. . . to make that choice on another living being's behalf," she says. And with those simple words, their paths diverge forever.
