"So raise a glass to life and its joy and pain"

Summary:

People whisper about the dark path, the single-log bridge. Why would he forsake the golden avenue, why would he let himself be consumed by damnation?
What they don't realize, however, is that once the light stops shining and the road crumbles under your feet, darkness consumes you. You scramble for purchase, for anything at all. And when a rotten, unstable log crosses your path, you choose your death. Drown or suffer the painful unknown.
It is there that you either succumb to the waves or build a choice. Build a path, however unstable may it be.
When the horizon is bared of land, your only choice is the lonely, dark, unknown.

Chapter 1: Prologue

Notes:

So! Hello! After being in this fandom for almost a year now, I finally decided to try and contribute to this community. So yeah, this is my first fic. I will warn from the beggining that I'm a student, so a regular schedule is probably not going to exist ;)
Also, my first language is not english, neither am I chinese, so please warn me if I made a mistake of any kind!

I want to express all my joy and love to the people that create those master pieces for free! I want to hug and kiss you 💐

(Another warning, I don't actually know what am I doing, please be patient with me)

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

"Big news! Wei Wuxian has died!"

Less then a day has passed since the explosion on the Yilling Burial Mounds shook the world, and the news spreads through the cultivation world as if it sprouted wings, surpassing even the speed of light.

From the prominent clan leaders to rogue cultivators, everyone is discussing the unexpected actions of the maverick of the cultivation world.

"The Yilling Patriarch has died? Who could have killed him?"

"Who other then the strongest cultivator of our time - he himself!"

"""WHAT!??"""

The entire tavern exploded at such outrageous claims!

"You must jest!! Why would the man that has the arrogance of the devil and the power to boot it decide to just end it all?"

"Friend, I'm telling you, what happened is truly unbelievable! Listen, the explosion that reverbed through the world was the aftermath of the Stygian Tyger Amulet's destruction. I heard that it shook the lands three times! And the one who destroyed it should be a no-brainer to guess - it's creator, Wei Wuxian! It is said that nothing remained of the man; not body, nor hair! One gruesome death, to be eaten alive! Even his soul dissipated, not to ever enter the reincarnation cycle!"

Everyone was transfixed on the old man's words, as if they heard the greatest of parables!

"...This Wei Wuxian, he's not that bad after all!"

"Maybe this is his form of penance for going astray."

"I mean, his single but most severe sin was that of cultivating the dark path. Back then, Wei Wuxian was one of the most promising cultivators, coming from a humble background, but succeeding in placing 4th on the list of young masters, despite his unfortunate past."

"I once had the pleasure of speaking with him - and let me tell you, he had his way with words; quiet the respectuos flirt!"

A lot of people sighted - in grief, disappointment or wishfulnes - no one really knew.

"This proves that one can only cultivate by following the right path-" before the man could continue, he was interrupted.

"But didn't he - not just once, but twice - destroyed the nightmares of the people? The dark path didn't succed in using his power for evil - even sacrificing himself in the end!"

"Indeed, I wonder what made such a soul need the power of the dead!"

"Hey, you know, I've heard that, after Lotus Pier's masacre..."

After Wei Wuxian's death, the period is drawn on the topic. The discussions of the people are mostly the same, contemplating the cultivation world's most unconventional man.

The opinion of the public was divided.

The frigid and stiff old men of the Jianku were of opinion that The Yilling Patriarch was devil incarnate - what could excuse the use of demonic cultivation?

The more open-minded individuals made their goal to find the reason one such as him would commit heresy.

As such, a state of ambivalence enveloped the palins of China. The subject of The Patriach brought a lot of controversy, and his actions were micro analyzed.

Everyone had an opinion, from the homeless children of the streets to the sect leaders, up on their golden thrones.

And so, a year passed, and a second, then a third, a fourth, and yet, the fluctuation remained in the air, one question still alive in everyone's mind:

What is the truth?

Notes:

First chapter everyone, hope you liked it ❤️ I think the next chapter will be ready after I make my all homework, so possibly tomorrow? I'm not promising anything though c:

Whenever I think of the cultivation world, I think it would be very similarly with Tweeter. I don't think I need to continue explaining.

(So, the very first dilemma I encountered seems to be the tags, but don't worry, I will figure it out eventually!)

With all that being said, have a good day/night!
