"Are you really sure this is a good idea?" Adora wondered as Catra and her walked down a small path not too far from Castle Brightmoon. "You and Netossa didn't exactly get off on the best of notes."
"Look, I think I'm over the spray bottle thing," Catra replied. "We've gotten on a lot better since then. Plus well, Spinny has been good to talk to as someone who also got... you know, chipped."
She rubbed the scar on the back of her neck, still
Catra and Adora had been invited to dinner by Netossa and Spinnerella that evening in their cottage in Brightmoon. Adora was surprised that Netossa and Spinnerelal even had a home of their own. She'd just assumed they lived in Brightmoon these past few years. But then again, she was a bit oblivious to these little details.
Nevertheless, it was still a surprise that they’d been invited to something like this. Normally, they’d be the ones planning out meeting up with friends of theirs. Adora hoped she wouldn’t mess this up, but Catra constantly kept reassuring her that all would be fine. What was the worst that could happen?
"Spinny?" Adora then asked.
"Yeah?"
"She lets you call her that?"
"Her wife doesn't mind," Catra remarked. "Besides, nicknames are easier for me to remember."
“Which is why you probably have a million just for me,” Adora said with a wink.
“Perhaps,” the felid flirted back.
Eventually, the two of them saw their destination, a cosy little cottage on a small hill that looked right out of a fairytale, decorated with adornments in the signature colours of its two owners. Adora was surprised it was just a little cottage. Again, as far as she knew, every princess lived in a castle.
But as she thought about it, as cool as castles were… a little cottage like this seemed much more appealing to her. A quiet little abode in the middle of nowhere where one could basically fade away from the rest of the world and not have to worry about a thing. Maybe one day, Adora and Catra could get a place like this.
"Cosy," Adora admitted.
“Bit small ain’t it?”
“I mean, they probably don’t need much,” Adora remarked.
“Fair.”
As they arrived, they saw the door open and Netossa greeted them with a warm smile. "Adora, Catra, you made it! We were starting to worry for a moment."
"Hey, Netossa," Adora replied.
“Hey,” Catra replied simply.
“Dear, is that our guests?” a cheery voice from within the cabin asked.
“Yeah Spinny, they’re here,” Netossa answered over her shoulder.
“Oh, perfect,” Spinnerella answered. “Dinner’s almost ready, I just need a few minutes for the vegetables to finish steaming. You can let them in if you want.”
“No problem,” she answered before moving out of the doorway to let Adora and Catra in. “After you, ladies.”
As Adora and Catra looked inside… they found that the inside of the cottage was even more quaint than the outside was. If one were to ask for a picture of a fairytale cottage, this is probably what it would look like. So charming, so rustic, so down to earth. Adora’s eyes lit up when she skipped around.
“Wow,” Adora gasped as she looked around. “Your house is so cute!”
Netossa giggled. “Thanks. Truthfully told, it was Spinny who did most of the decorating when we built the place. I took care of most of the heavy-duty stuff.”
“Yeah, I can tell, it’s really pink and princessy,” Catra snarked. “No wonder Adora’s freaking out.”
The silver-haired woman blushed in embarrassment. “Yeah, Spinny’s kinda into that stuff, a lot.”
“Don’t feel embarrassed, Netossa,” Adora reassured their friend as she walked around. “My girlfriend doesn’t really have the eye for aesthetics.”
“I do! I just prefer stuff that’s not all this pinky princess stuff!” Catra grumbled. “And besides, growing up in the Horde made me appreciate function over form a lot more. I prefer things looking a lot more practical.”
“You and me too, Kitty,” Netossa added. “But well, I’d actually prefer to be sleeping in the same bed as Spinny, so it’s best to let her have her way every now and then.”
“I can hear you, darling!” Spinnerella called out playfully.
“Oh crap,” Netossa groaned, to which Catra just giggled.
As Catra looked around the room, she saw various pictures on the walls. Some of Spinnerella and Netossa in their younger years, and others depicting kingdoms she wasn't familiar with. One was a kingdom deep in the forest, surrounded by towering trees and flowing rivers, the other a small village in the mountains that she recognised as being near where the Fright Zone was.
"Were these the kingdoms you were the princesses of?" Catra asked.
Netossa nodded. "Sort of. My family came from a smaller kingdom not too far from Brightmoon. We were famous as hunters and trackers, hence the net powers. Spinny came from a travelling community of wind mages that made their home in the mountains and decided to settle in Brightmoon."
"Ah," Catra stated. “Sure you don’t wanna consider going back there? Maybe rebuilding them like what Scorpia’s gonna do with her kingdom?”
“We’ve considered it,” Netossa admitted. “But honestly, our peoples are too displaced over Etheria now and honestly, we’d rather just enjoy our lives here.”
“Makes sense.”
"You ever wonder where you came from?" Netossa wondered. “I mean, I know there’s plenty of cat-folk across the planet.”
"It's not something the Horde ever wrote down, not that I'd care," Catra admitted. "Adora's the only family and home I'll ever need."
“Aww, that’s just precious,” Spinnerella added, walking out of the kitchen with a pink frilly apron covering her usual attire. “You saying that reminds me of how I used to be when I first fell in love with Netossa.”
“You always were a hopeless romantic,” Netossa flirted, before kissing her on the cheek. “I take it dinner’s done?”
“Oh yes, all done, whenever you’re ready.”
“Then let me escort you, m’lady,” Netossa said in a suave tone, leading her wife into the kitchen arm-in-arm.
“They’re sickeningly cute,” Catra reluctantly admitted. “I pray I never go that soft when we get married.”
“And I’m hoping you doooooo,” Adora replied teasingly, grabbing Catra’s hand and leading her to dinner.
Eventually, after their very delicious dinner was done, the two couples were in the front room of the cottage, Spinnerella and Netossa regaling Adora and Catra with stories of their life together. Currently, Netossa was telling them about hers and Spinnerella’s wedding day and how her wife was almost late.
“And then she flies up to the altar and pleads to Angella that she was so sorry for being late,” Netossa said, giggling. “Angella just laughed of course and that it wasn’t her she should be apologising for… and then she saw me in my wedding dress and well, I think you can gather the rest.”
“Darling, you promised you wouldn’t tell that story!” Spinnerella grumbled in embarrassment.
“You’re my wife, I’m allowed to embarrass you.”
“Oh? And what about the time when you confessed your love for me? You thought I was going to leave the academy in Brightmoon, you rushed straight up to me, tears in your eyes, begging. “Oh Spinny, please don’t leave, I love you more than anything, please don’t gooooooooooooo!!!”
“It was not like that!” Netossa growled, blushing furiously.
“For the record, I was merely changing to a private tutor to better hone my magic,” Spinnerella explained. “‘Tossa here didn’t know that of course and for the next month, she could barely look at me without feeling flustered and embarrassed.”
Adora and Catra just laughed at that, Adora in particular barely able to keep her glass of juice in her hand she was laughing so hard. “And I said your confession to me was dramatic, Catra!”
“Oh very funny, dummy,” Catra groaned.
“Guess both our loves want to embarrass us tonight,” Netossa sighed.
“Oh, lighten up, Mrs Grumpy Pants,” Spinnerella teased. “I had a perfectly valid reason for telling them that one.”
“You mean besides making me look like a fool?”
“Well, we are wanting to get to know them better,” Spinnerelal reminded her. “Besides, I thought that would help Adora and Catra understand what it was like for us to fall in love, since well, we know all the twists and turns your story went didn’t it, girls?”
“Yeah, you’re not wrong, Catra thought she was gonna lose me when she finally confessed her love for me,” Adora admitted. “Of course, I thought I was literally dying at the time, but when I heard her say she’d always loved me and wanted to stay… well, that's the thing that gave me the strength to carry on living.”
Catra blushed softly, before leaning in. “Well, the world would be a cold dark place without you in it, Adora.”
Gazing fondly, Adora then tilted Catra’s chin up and kissed her softly, with Netossa and Spinnerella watching the younger pair, holding one another and reminiscing about their own young love.
"You know. we are proud of you two for getting together," Spinnerella said. "And if you ever need any advice regarding being in love well... we've had nearly ten years of experience."
"And seven of those were before we got married," Netossa added.
“You sure? I mean, it’s alright, Catra and I don’t really need- Ugh!”
“Yes,” Catra interrupted her girlfriend by jabbing her in the stomach with her elbow. “We would appreciate any advice you can give us. As long as Nets here promises to not use that damn spray bottle again.”
“Well, as long as you behave,” Netossa said teasingly.
Eventually, though, the sun finally went down and it was soon time for Adora and Catra to head home. As they stepped outside, Netossa and Spinnerella both hugged them goodbye, before wishing them farewell. It had certainly been a lovely evening enjoyed by all, one that they hoped to do again.
“Thanks again for this,” Aodra said, gratefully. “I mean it, we don’t usually get invited to dinner like this.”
“Oh then we’re definitely going to have to make this a regular occasion,” Spinnerella said. “Maybe next time, we could get Glimmer and Bow to join us.”
“I think they’d like that,” Adora said. “Well, we’d better get going. Goodnight you two.”
“Yeah, see you around,” Catra added, as she and Adora headed back down the path.
As they watched Adora and Catra leave, Netossa leaned against her wife, feeling Spinnerella stroke her hair. “They really are the luckiest girls in the world, aren’t they,” Netossa remarked.
“And we’re going to make sure they end up just as happy as us,” Spinnerella added, smiling proudly, watching Adora and Catra holding each other's hands, both couples knowing that the future looked very bright for them both.
