Work Text:
The soft glow of fairy lights bathed Hermione's muggle flat in a warm, inviting ambiance. Seated across from each other on the floor, Hermione and Draco were engrossed in the colorful jigsaw puzzle spread out before them. Hermione's brow furrowed in concentration as she scrutinized a particular piece, her fingers deftly maneuvering it into place. Draco watched her carefully as she worked, his own hands thumbing a corner piece.
As Draco observed Hermione's determination he commented, "You're quite serious about these muggle puzzles, aren't you?"
Without even looking up Hermione nodded. "Of course! It's a delightful pastime and challenge for the mind, Draco. It requires a different kind of skill."
Still watching, he grabbed another piece from the box and placed it beside the part Hermione was currently working on. "I suppose I can appreciate that. So when we are finished is when the picture will move, correct?"
Hermione softly smiled. "Oh, not normally. But don't worry. I've already enchanted this puzzle so that something exciting will happen for you even though it’s just a boring muggle activity .” Draco frowned but as he took a breath in to speak Hermione quickly continued, “But for now, let's focus on the puzzle."
As they continued their puzzle-solving endeavor, a calm silence settled between them. They continued to work in tandem and the puzzle slowly began to take shape. The hours slipped away unnoticed, and the initial chatter and laughter had transformed into an almost meditative focus on the task at hand. Every now and then, they exchanged pieces, shared knowing glances, and offered silent encouragement.
Minutes turned into hours as the puzzle edges were completed, and a vibrant image emerged from the sea of pieces. Draco's fingers brushed against Hermione's as they reached for the same piece, and their eyes met in a brief, fleeting moment of connection before returning to the puzzle.
It was only when they reached the final stretch of the puzzle that Hermione realized how quiet the room had become. She looked up, her heart warming at the sight of the nearly completed image. But alongside the satisfaction, a wave of uncertainty began to rise within Hermione's heart.
Pausing mid-motion, she sighed softly, her expression growing pensive. Draco noticed her change in demeanor and set his own puzzle piece aside, concern furrowing his brow.
She paused, her fingers hovering over a puzzle piece, her gaze distant as if lost in thought. Draco noticed the change in her demeanor and set aside his own piece with a glance towards her, "Hermione, something on your mind?" he inquired, his voice laced with gentle curiosity.
Hermione let out a soft sigh, her gaze unfocused as she tried to put her swirling thoughts into words. "It's just... Draco, these moments with you have been wonderful, but there are times when I can't help but question whether we truly belong together. Our worlds are so different, and the thought of what lies ahead..."
Draco's features softened, and he moved a little closer, his expression gentle. He didn't say a word, allowing her to express her worries.
Hermione met his gaze, vulnerability etching her features. "What if our differences prove to be too overwhelming? What if people look at us and see an incongruous pairing, a 'golden child' entwined with a 'death eater's son'? The judgments, the whispers... It's all so daunting."
Draco's fingers brushed against her cheek, his touch tender. He remained silent, his gray eyes fixed on hers, offering her a patient and attentive presence.
Her voice trembled as she continued, her doubts spilling forth like a torrent. "And then there's Harry, Ron, your friends, you mentioned Blaize and Theo if I remember correctly, and our tentative friend group since eighth year. What will they say? How will they react when they find out about us? I can't help but fear that they'll be disappointed or concerned."
Draco's expression remained unwavering, a steady anchor for her turbulent thoughts.
Hermione's words flowed more urgently now, her anxiety surfacing in a torrent. "We've been through so much together, and they mean the world to me. I don't want anything to jeopardize those friendships, but I also don't want to deny what I'm feeling for you."
Draco's gaze held hers as he grabbed hold of her hand and began calmingly rubbing the back of it with his thumb.
"I just wish I had a clear path forward, a certainty that everything will work out," Hermione admitted, her voice softer now, laced with a hint of desperation. "But I'm caught in this whirlwind of doubts, and it's hard to find my footing."
Draco's fingers tightened ever so slightly around her hand, his touch a silent reassurance.
“And I-” And before she could continue delving deeper into her spiral, Draco leaned in, his lips brushing against hers in a tender, unexpected kiss. It was short but abrupt enough to startle her out of her thoughts leaving her speechless.
As they pulled away, Hermione's lips tingling, she stared at Draco, her heart racing. His gaze held a warmth and a quiet strength, a silent acknowledgment that he had heard her worries and that he was there.
“I suppose that’s one way to shut me up.” She chuckled softly as Draco wiped away a tear trail from her cheek.
“And I’ll do it as many times as I need to when you start thinking like that. I’m here and it doesn’t matter what the rest of the world says. One day at a time. That’s what we said when we started. And anyways, I could take on Weasley and Potter any day for you.” He winked and interlaced their hands together.
"You have a way of grounding me," she admitted, her voice a whisper.
Draco's lips quirked into a soft smile. "And you have a way of making me believe in the possibilities."
Their fingers remained intertwined, a silent understanding passing between them. The jigsaw puzzle before them might have had its challenges, but it paled in comparison to the puzzle of their own hearts—a puzzle they were navigating together, piece by piece, as they discovered the intricate beauty of their growing relationship.
