DC Mitchell

Summary:

A missing scene from 20/07/23 episode and how Ben ended up using Callum’s warrant card.

Includes some banter, fluff and flirting!

Notes:

Well, it’s been around 2 years since I’ve written Ballum and I’m probably rusty and this may suck! But hopefully you’ll enjoy this silly, flirty, fluffy one shot.

Big thanks to Kate who supported me in writing this and getting back on the writing train, as well as the dig at Phil in the dialogue 😅

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Ben burst through the front door of the flat and hot footed it up the stairs knowing if his plan was to work he would have to hurry and get back to the caff.

“Babe, you here?” He called as he reached the top of the flight of stairs only to come to a swift halt as his husband emerged from the bathroom with steam billowing around him, damp skin and a towel wrapped dangerously low on his hips. “You’ve gotta be kidding me?”

Callum’s brow creased unsure of what he’d done. “What?”

“You can’t be all naked and tempting right now, babe.” Ben murmured low and sultry as he closed the distance between them whilst unashamedly looking his man up and down. He ran his hands up and down Callum’s slick arms and planted a quick kiss on his lips before diving into their bedroom. “I’ve gotta rush back out. Mum needs my help.”

“Your Mum? Is she alright?” Callum asked as he followed Ben into the room to find him already digging through their wardrobe.

“Sort of…remember the slap fight she had at the reception?” Ben asked as he pulled out the black suit he was looking for.

“Yeah, with Rocky’s ex wife…” Callum said as he sat on the edge of their bed.

“Well, it turns out that she isn’t exactly his ex-wife.” Ben explained as he tugged his top over his head. He caught Callum’s heated gaze and couldn’t hide the smirk on his face, loving that they still had this affect on each other. “Don’t get any ideas, gorgeous, your man is on a mission.”

Callum smiled that familiar sunshine smile. “Clearly, but he still hasn’t explained what the mission is or what’s going on!”

As Ben quickly pushed his arms through the crisp white shirt that he had also retrieved from the wardrobe he paused and sat beside Callum on the bed.

“Okay, so long story short Rocky married Mum whilst still married to this Jo. They didn’t know as she didn’t sign the divorce papers and faked the decree absolute thing. And now she’s blackmailing them. Mum has already given her 50k!”

“What?! That’s so much money! Why haven’t they just gone to the police?” Callum queried.

“Jo may have told Rocky this before the wedding and have a recording of it…”

“So he knowingly committed bigamy?” Callum sighed. “I didn’t hear or know about any of this.” He added, knowing in his capacity as a member of the law he should really report it.

“Exactly, which rules out the cops.” Ben confirmed.

“So what have you got up your sleeve then?” Callum asked knowingly. He practically had a sixth sense when it came to Ben’s mischievous antics.

“Sooooo we’ve got a plan to put the frighteners on her by me posing as a detective constable.”

Callum instantly sniggered and found it even more funny when he took notice of the offended look on his husbands face. “I’m sorry, darling, but Ben Mitchell posing as a cop is hilarious!”

“You saying I can’t pull it off?” Ben huffed. “I’ve been hauled into the cop shop enough times to know the basics. Besides, got a hot detective husband to learn from ain’t I?”

Callum affectionately rolled his eyes as he watched Ben return to hurriedly getting dressed. “Look, why don’t I come along and do it instead? I don’t want you getting arrested for impersonating a police officer.”

“No way, babe.” Ben immediately shut down the idea. “You are staying as far away from this as you can. I don’t want you putting your job in jeopardy.”

“But what if you get caught out?” Callum argued.

“Cal, the woman married Rocky! She can’t be the sharpest knife in the drawer can she?” Ben reasoned.

“I’ll tell Kathy you said that!” Callum chuckled. “Her own son calling her stupid!”

“Don’t you dare!” Ben smiled. “You’re meant to be on my side!”

“Always.” Callum said earnestly and with the familiar warmth in his voice that makes Ben’s heart swell. “I promise I won’t tell. Besides, your Mum may not be stupid, but her taste in men is definitely questionable. I mean she married your Dad, didn’t she? So you may have a point.”

Ben couldn’t quell the grin at Callum’s cheeky remark. “And I won’t tell my Dad you said that!” He teased.

“Please don’t!” Callum said with a nervous laugh before his face turned more serious. “Just be careful though, yeah?”

“I promise I’ll keep it low-key. No big scenes will come from me.” Ben swore as he shrugged on the black suit jacket. “Can I ask a favour though?”

“What do ya need?”

“I was wondering if I could use your warrant card?” Ben saw the moment of hesitation cross Callum’s face. “I just need to flash it once as proof that’s all and I’ll keep it safe.”

“You better do!” Callum warned before telling him it’s in his suit jacket out in the hall. “Just do me a favour in return and keep my name covered whilst you’re flashing your credentials.”

“Speaking of flashing…” Ben smirked as he eyed up Callum salaciously once again. “Wanna give me a treat before I go?”

“What and get arrested by DC Mitchell for public indecency?” Callum chuckled as he tugged Ben in close by the lapels of his suit.

“Don’t think I could arrest you for that particular crime in the comfort of our own home, babe.” Ben laughed before kissing Callum softly on the lips. “I love you so much.”

“I love you too.” Callum affirmed and quickly stole another kiss from Ben’s lips. “You look very sexy in this suit, ya know?”

“Says the man parading around in nothing but a towel.” Ben winked as his greedy hands travelled down the length and ridges of Callum’s spine down to his bum. “Do me a favour…”

“Another one?” Callum interjected.

“Don’t bother getting dressed.” Ben said with a heated gaze that made Callum’s whole body tingle in anticipation. “I’ll be back as soon as I can.” Ben told him as he took a firm grasp on Callum’s cheeks.

After another quick kiss Ben moved into the hallway, retrieved Callum’s warrant card from his discarded suit jacket that he wore on the previous nights shift and placed it inside his own.

“By the way what’s the going rate for blackmail these days?”

“Maximum is fourteen years.”

“Thanks, babe. Right, gotta go.” Ben said. “Be back soon.”

“See ya later, DC Mitchell.”

As he turned and walked away Callum leant against the doorframe to their bedroom smiling brightly at seeing the mischievous smirk return and that familiar swagger back in Ben’s step. It had been a while since he had seen it.
