Chapter Text

Wolfhyuk is one of the last wolves of his kind in the N’gai forest. The fur covering his body is completely pitch black, making him look like a black panther from afar. His body is muscular and lean, and his size is more than double that of a common wolf, making him special among his kind. He lives in solitude as is common for his stoic nature.

The fur on his broad shoulders and long, tapered snout is as black as night. His amber eyes keenly observe his surroundings. Though powerful, his movements are graceful and fluid as he patrols his territory with perked ears and a curling tail. Wolfhyuk embodies the primal majesty of his predatory species. The last of a rare breed, he roams the N'gai forest in lonely reverie, a haunting reminder of what nature can create - and what humanity may one day lose.

Even though the law itself had prohibited any kind of hunting inside this specific forest, the rumor of such a wolf being around attracted many unsavory ears.

However, Wolfhyuk's very rarity and magnificence also make him a target for exploitation, attracting poachers seeking to illegally hunt him for profit. The looming threat of human traps set with eagerness underscores Wolfhyuk's vulnerability despite his immense physical power. The irony is that the law intended to protect Wolfhyuk's forest home has in fact made him a conspicuous prize for poachers, highlighting the dangers that accompany being "the last of a rare breed."

The wolf was patrolling alone, searching for potential prey to satisfy its predatory instincts. The forest's fauna was thriving, thanks to conservation laws that protected the animals. However, unbeknownst to the animals, a couple of hunters had entered the forest that day with the intention of hunting down Wolfhyuk and selling its fur to a wealthy collector. The hunters had laid hidden traps along some of the forest paths, eagerly awaiting their prey.

Wolfhyuk sensed the unwanted attention and knew that someone or something was observing every move. The wolf felt uneasy, uncomfortable being in the spotlight. Humans had not entered this sacred forest for a long time.

Despite the wolf's attempts to move cautiously and quietly, he inadvertently triggered one of the hidden traps. Although he couldn't see the various traps well concealed in the area, he was fortunate that only the outer part of the trap was triggered, and his leg was not caught inside. However, the metallic sound of the trap being triggered alerted his pursuers, forcing the wolf to prioritize his own safety above all else. Wolfhyuk quickly sprang into action, using the power and agility of his four legs to bolt through the forest. He deftly maneuvered between trees, bushes, and rocks, attempting to outrun and outsmart his pursuers. His muscles tensed as he leaped over long distances and propelled himself off obstacles, evading any obstacles in his path to freedom. With grace and ferocity, he raced through the untamed wilderness.

All Wolfhyuk could do was to escape. He knew a direct confrontation with the hunters would surely result in his death. When he reached a deserted path in the forest, he suddenly stopped at the sound of a gunshot that startled him out of nowhere. Birds and small animals fled at the loud noise, making Wolfhyuk even more aware of the precariousness of his situation. He knew his only options were to hide or flee for his life. What Wolfhyuk couldn't anticipate was that, just as he was about to resume running, his ear twitched at the sound of something metallic shifting - a sound that shouldn't have been there.

As Wolfhyuk took a step to run again, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his leg as it was caught in a well-hidden bear trap, its claws embedded deep into his flesh and preventing him from moving any further. His pupils contracted at the sight of nearby bushes moving and the rustling sounds of human footsteps, triggering a fight-or-flight reaction within him. His tail thrashed frantically as he panicked.

Using all his might and a tremendous sense of desperation and panic, Wolfhyuk managed to free himself from the trap. He clamped down on it with his teeth and clawed at it, attempting to loosen its grip on his leg. The process was excruciatingly painful, and he felt something tear as he finally broke free from its deadly hold. Despite leaving drops of blood behind, the wound was not fatal. 'It hurts,' the wolf thought, as he limped away from the scene of the attack.

Their cat and mouse chase began again when another gunshot rang out, this time headed straight for him. This meant that Wolfhyuk couldn't pause to address his pain and discomfort and had to immediately flee once more. The humans persisted over catching him, his run lasted for what felt like hours, his efforts doubled as one of his limbs was off limits to use as every time his wounded leg touched the ground a massive amount of pain would jolt through his whole being.

Wolfhyuk's breath came in ragged, labored pants. His movements didn't indicate a good condition - they were slow, painful and uneven, his legs wobbling from side to side as he walked. Finally, he had managed to escape the clutches of the hunters who were after him, though the wolf couldn't speculate on the reason why those two had stopped pursuing him. Perhaps it was because the clear sky above had grown dark after all those hours of running. Either way, Wolfhyuk couldn't help but feel grateful for this outcome, surviving with only a non-fatal wound.

With the rest of his strength, the wolf dragged himself under the mighty yet comforting old oak tree, resting against its rough bark. His body sank down in exhaustion, devoid of any remaining energy. The wolf's body curled up, with a low and deep huff Wolfhyuk's eye remained open observing his surroundings, his tail moving showing the tension still within his chest from what had happened, needing time to calm down properly.

It had been years since the forest was a calm and safe place, nor in his entire life had Wolfhyuk had to encounter such dangers and this was his first time having to deal with humans. The stress was unbearable and those paranoid thoughts filled his mind.

Upon seeing the bushes in front of him move, Wolfhyuk's panic only intensified. He began to growl loudly, hoping to signal his presence and warn any potential threats to stay away. However, to his surprise, it was not a predatory beast that emerged from the bushes...

A plain red fox emerged from the bushes, lacking any distinctive physical characteristics. Upon hearing Wolfhyuk's fierce growls, the fox whined and whimpered, lowering its ears and assuming a cautious posture. It was apparent that the fox had been carrying a mouse in its mouth, indicating that it was trying to bring food back to its den.

However, Wolfhyuk couldn't comprehend why Foxja kept trying to circle around him, seemingly attempting to get behind the oak tree. Wolfhyuk growled, causing Foxja to back away and whine. It was difficult for Wolfhyuk to understand why the fox was so persistent.

Meanwhile, Foxja couldn't fathom why the wolf was obstinately blocking the entrance to his den!

The wolf let out a deep breath and rested his head on his front paws, gazing intently into the brown eyes of the fox with his single eye. The two animals sat in complete silence, with the fox mimicking the wolf's posture and sitting just a few inches away, staring back at him with its own brown eyes.

From this angle, Foxja noticed a few interesting details about the wolf in front of him. The wolf was no ordinary one - there was a wild, untamed air about him that marked him as distinct from other wolves Foxja had seen. He saw that one of the wolf's eyes was marked with a scar and missing, and Foxja surmised that the humans from before had caused the injury that took the wolf's eye. He had heard several gunshots earlier, but now with a better view, his eyes fell on black fur stained with red, indicating the real wound was not the eye but the injured limb.

'Perhaps being compassionate wouldn't hurt this time,' Foxja thought as he stood up and slowly walked on tiptoe towards the wolf, leaving the mouse he had caught before beside the wolf's face. Then Foxja moved away, keeping a respectful distance before lying down on the ground. With the wolf occupying the entrance of his den, it was impossible for Foxja to rest inside at the moment. He would have to simply accept his fate for now.

At first, Wolfhyuk refused to eat, suspicion flickering in his good eye as he eyed the peace offering the fox had left him. But the growling noises emanating from his empty stomach after all that had happened that day left him with little choice. With the caution of a starving beast offered a lifeline, he gobbled the little mouse in one hungry bite, fur and bones crunching between his jaws. He licked the remains of blood and fur from the sides of his mouth before settling back down with a weary sigh, his single eye remaining vigilant even as exhaustion threatened to pull him into sleep.

The next morning, Wolfhyuk woke to find himself alone once more. His body still ached with weariness, his injured leg no longer bleeding but far from healed. He remained under the oak tree, dozing fitfully yet ever vigilant, his single eye scanning the forest for any threat. Little did he know, part of him hoped to see the fox again. Though Wolfhyuk would never admit it, he needed help - it was still nearly impossible for him to walk, let alone hunt for food on his own.

As the hours passed in dull monotony, the gnawing hunger in Wolfhyuk's stomach grew ever harder to ignore. Just when he thought he could endure no more, a flash of russet fur caught his eye. There, no more than a stone's throw away, sat Foxja, his brown eyes watching Wolfhyuk carefully. In his mouth, the fox gripped a pigeon, another small offering for the wolf in need.

Pride warred with pragmatism within Wolfhyuk as he considered the fox's gesture. Though he remained wary, part of him longed to accept the peace offering and fill his empty stomach. Pride be damned - his survival depended on what happened next. With a low, rumbling growl, Wolfhyuk gestured for Foxja to bring the bird closer.

The red fox walked with the same slow and cautious gait as the last time, gradually moving closer to Wolfhyuk. Just as before, his ears were lowered and his gaze uncertain. Opening his jaws, Foxja dropped the pigeon onto the ground in front of Wolfhyuk. He waited nervously for any reaction from the wolf, who silently glared at him - certainly not for the first time.

Foxja was taken aback as the wolf opened his mouth wide and ravenously devoured the pigeon, tearing it apart and reducing it to pieces in a matter of bites. But underneath the wolf's violent feeding, Foxja sensed gratitude. Wolfhyuk's jaws slowed, depositing what remained of the pigeon on the ground before locking eyes with Foxja, conveying a clear invitation to share the meal together.

That single yellow eye seemed to speak volumes with just one deep gaze, saying 'Companion.' After a moment of still silence, the wolf began to eat, not with his previous ravenous and ferocious manner but in a slow and calm way.

Foxja steeled himself for a moment before sitting down and lowering his head to sniff at the pigeon carcass. Then, he began to eat, indulging himself for dinner. For the first time, the wolf and fox shared a meal together.

But this one wouldn’t be the last one.

After that, Foxja started bringing food for them to share. As a fox, he could only catch small things like voles and mice. That was not much food for a big wolf. Still, Wolfhyuk would eat without complaining. He ate Foxja's little meals with energy. And if there was not enough for Wolfhyuk, he would let Foxja have the rest.

Wolfhyuk and Foxja did not start as friends. Foxja tried to be nice first. Then Wolfhyuk let Foxja help him when he was hurt. This is how their friendship began. As Wolfhyuk got better and stronger, they became closer friends. They both lived alone so they enjoyed each other's company. Even though they were different kinds of animals, they understood each other with looks and touches as they ate together. They were friends against a sometimes hard world.

When Wolfhyuk became stronger, he tried to stand up from where he had sat for so long. When he got up, he still felt some pain but over the days with the fox's help, the pain became less.

When Wolfhyuk moved away, he discovered why the fox had wanted to get closer to him in recent days. Under the oak tree there was a den - neither too small to feel cramped nor too large with too much space.

Wolfhyuk now realized that he had made the fox homeless for a whole week.

Wolfhyuk went into the den right away. He became curled up into a ball in the small space. Surprisingly, the small den was still comfortable for him.

Foxja uttered a soft whine at the sight - with Wolfhyuk filling the entire den, there was no room left for him. The fox turned away with a sorrowful sigh, resigning himself to a night in the cold.

But suddenly, the enormous wolf lifted one great paw. With a gentle tug, he pulled Foxja into his massive furry body. Foxja found himself enveloped by the sea of black fur, drawn in like he was falling into a furry black hole - yet one that was impossibly warm and cozy.

However, Foxja's initial instincts kicked in and he began to squirm, desperate to escape the suffocating embrace. He whined and wriggled, but Wolfhyuk only growled in response, his tongue soon rasping roughly against Foxja's fur as he began to groom the small fox.

Foxja trembled as the massive wolf on top of him began grooming his fur with a raspy tongue, cleaning him with long, slow licks and the occasional gentle nibble. The fox yelped and whined the whole time, terrified he might end up as a meal, for never had he expected this wolf to show him such affection. Wolfhyuk's huge tongue felt rough and abrasive against Foxja's sensitive pelt, yet underneath the coursing currents of fear that gripped him, the fox sensed a gentleness in Wolfhyuk's ministrations. This was no prelude to violence, but an attempt - however clumsy - at expressing kinship.

Foxja just got used to it.

Not surprisingly, this made Wolfhyuk and Foxja become closer friends. The wolf's normally stoic and cool act fell away easily after this event. In fact, it was Wolfhyuk who tried hard to get Foxja's attention most of the time.

As more days passed and they shared more meals and time in the den together, the wolf's injured leg fully healed. The only problem was the wolf still had some trouble walking. The wolf wobbled sometimes but just needed more practice.

One time, Wolfhyuk and Foxja bounded merrily around the great oak tree, playing their game of chase. Wolfhyuk lumbered slowly after Foxja, his massive strides easily keeping pace with the fox's darts and zigzags. If Wolfhyuk genuinely gave chase, it would be a matter of moments before his powerful jaws closed around the smaller creature.

But today, the wolf toyed with his prey, prolonging their silly game. After circling the gnarled old oak again and again, Wolfhyuk finally snatched at Foxja's tail, nibbling it gently. Foxja, understanding this as a signal he had been "caught", fell dramatically to the forest floor, yipping and squealing in mock agony before falling still.

Wolfhyuk huffed softly in amusement, padding over to nudge at his fallen companion. Foxja cracked one eye open, grinning impishly up at the massive wolf before scrambling to his feet and dashing away once more.

Another time, Wolfhyuk and Foxja went hunting together. By now, Wolfhyuk had healed enough to run, dart and otherwise move normally. Although Wolfhyuk thought Foxja's grooming helped speed his recovery, that view was mistaken.

They hunted in a new area of the forest, far from their home under the oak tree. Once there, Foxja pounced excitedly at even the slightest movement, hoping to catch a mouse or two. Wolfhyuk, meanwhile, waited patiently for bigger prey like a rabbit to appear, having much higher and bigger hopes than the oblivious fox.

Foxja sadly watched as Wolfhyuk ran into the forest and disappeared. This left Foxja alone again.

Foxja walked through the forest for the rest of the day. The small animals he tried to catch kept avoiding him. Every noise in the leaves made Foxja hope, but then he found nothing.

Foxja's feet started to hurt and his stomach made noises, but he kept searching. Foxja tried to think that Wolfhyuk leaving did not upset him and their friendship did not matter. But as Foxja got hungrier, he knew he could not pretend this - Wolfhyuk leaving left an empty feeling that only food could not fill.

Foxja walked home alone, his tail drooping low to the ground and his ears pressed flat against his skull. He trudged wearily into the den that suddenly felt too big and empty without his companion by his side. The fox curled up in his usual spot, but no comforting warmth now filled the space where the wolf usually lay. Foxja's stomach rumbled loudly in the silence, protesting its lack of food. The fox reluctantly chewed on the tiny worm he had found, each bite tasting bitter and unsatisfying.

Foxja waited for Wolfhyuk's return, his eyes fixed on the den entrance. He had grown used to the wolf's silent yet looming presence, his steady breathing and occasional grunts of contentment. Without them, the familiar den now felt strangely foreign and hollow. Exhaustion began to overtake Foxja's lonely vigil. His eyes fluttered shut against his will as weariness seeped into his bones. The last thing Foxja saw before slipping into sleep was the gaping hole in the den where his friend should be, and the tiny worm still clutched clenched in his paw.

Foxja hoped that when he awoke, Wolfhyuk would have returned to fill the den with warmth once more, to banish the darkness of Foxja's solitude with the steady rhythms of his presence. But for now, Foxja slept alone.

'Is it raining?' Foxja thought as he felt something cold and wet against his face, waking him up. He opened one brown eye and found the wolf sniffing and nuzzling all over his face. The fox rolled away while yawning annoyed, upset that the wolf had left without any warning. The wolf had nothing to say. He walked away from the den and stood in front of the oak tree, waiting for the fox to come out.

When Foxja faced the wolf again, he froze at the wolf's tail wagging quickly - a fast movement that confused Foxja .

Foxja's confusion turned to happy wonder. The wolf had dragged a whole wild boar back to their den! The hungry fox ran from his nest quickly, eating the dead animal parts ravenously. He tore at the dead meat with his teeth , swallowing every piece he could see while Wolfhyuk watched.

The wolf saw Foxja's eating parts display with loud amusement. Wolfhyuk soon joined the happy feast, taking mouthfuls of the juicy boar meat.

The trouble and mistrust born from their alone lives melted away, remade during sharing this food that filled their bellies. And as their bellies grew full with this plentiful meat, so did their friendship grow within the warmth of companionship they made between them.

After such feast, the two animals  were all in a grumpy and lazy mood. Curled up inside their den, Foxja trapped underneath the massive ball of black fur coming from Wolfhyuk yet he couldn’t deny that the warmth radiating was.. Addicting, cozy and everything possibly positive you could ever imagine. Wolfhyuk was back at it with his grooming habit, nibbling and licking over the fox’s russet fur till perfection.

They passed their aftermath like this, nibbling, making sounds such as Foxja’s loud whinings mixed with Wolfhyuk’s howlings to pass the time before they got sleepy and began to fall into a deep slumber, before that could happen. Wolfhyuk moved his tail to cover up the rest of the fox’s body that was currently exposed to the chilly air of the forest, granting this time to let it be used as blanket for the fox.

In that shared moment, Wolfhyuk and Foxja shared more than just the food. Foxja and Wolfhyuk both lived in the N'gai forest. Although very different as a wolf and a fox, they did have some things in common:

Where Wolfhyuk was black, Foxja was red. While the wolf was stoic and solitary, the fox was playful yet quiet in his own way. Though both were males of their species, their demeanors contrasted - one more dominant, the other more submissive. Yet they both lived alone without family around them.

Though the wolf surpassed the fox in strength, the fox outmatched the wolf in cleverness and cunning.

Overall, Foxja and Wolfhyuk exhibited stark contrasts in temperament, personality and approach to life in the forest. But they also shared some commonalities, particularly in their solitary lifestyle without pack or family. Although they didn't need a family or pack, they found each other.

Wolfhyuk pressed himself against Foxja, filling the small fox's world with warmth and comfort. Foxja returned the affection in full, nuzzling contentedly into the wolf's fur.

'Family' they thought together before falling into a deep sleep in the warmth from each other.
